MISSION STATEMENT: Freeborn County Crime Victims Crisis Center functions to aid, support and empower crime victims, and to educate the community about crime victimization in an effort to promote positive societal changes.

In 1968, Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood came into the living rooms throughout America. For more than 30 years, Mr. Rogers taught the values of kindness, helping others, and empathy. Children today are more likely to be familiar with Daniel Tiger. That little tiger has a helpful jingle for everything, a fact that my children remind me daily of by singing a life lesson in musical form. The legend of Fred Rogers and his cartoon counterpart is a force to be reckoned with.

Crime Victims Crisis Center of Freeborn County

On-call volunteer advocates are provided with 40 hours of advocacy training, must pass a criminal history background check, have a valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance.

The role of volunteer on-call advocates is to answer the 24-Hour Crisis line after hours and on weekends.

On-call advocates provide nonjudgmental and confidential support to crime victims. They can also provide information about domestic/sexual violence and safety planning. Advocates help people re-claim their power by providing information, support, resources and referrals.

Despite the deep affection that society has for both Mr. Rogers and Daniel Tiger, people often forget that it takes committed volunteerism to keep the wheels running in our non-profit agencies. Spontaneous helping is always valuable; the little things like holding the door for others, paying it forward in the coffee shop line, smiling and connecting with others. Even volunteering for a one-time event—we like to say that, “every bit helps”. It does, it truly does. However, when it comes to our non profit agencies, committed volunteerism makes a huge impact. Often our agencies have small staff and large workloads.

Committed volunteering is serving on the boards and committees of non-profits—and following through by showing up. Committed volunteering is dedicating a set number of hours every week, month, or quarter.

It might be that you’re going to deliver meals once a week for six months, or volunteer at an event once a year. Whatever your set amount is, the critical piece lies in the fact that our non-profits know that they can rely on you to carry the ball for this particular task. Let me be clear though. It doesn’t mean allowing yourself to be over extended or saying yes to everything that is asked of you. No non-profit wants to see burn out in their employees or their volunteers.

Beyond the individual being a committed volunteer, it’s essential that companies realize the impact that they can have in their communities. It’s a knee-jerk reaction for one to say that big businesses have no interest in anything, “but the bottom line” or that they only want to give because, “it makes them look good, but they don’t really care”. There have been times that I’ve had volunteers say, “sorry, I wanted to be there, but I have to work, and I can’t lose my job”.

VOLUNTEER But what if you can be a business that cares about the bottom line….that cares about the community?

What if you can invest in your community, and the community will invest in you?

Turns out, you can. The answer lies in employee engagement. A 2018 study by Benevity shows that giving and volunteering through the workplace can greatly reduce turnover by an average of 57%. When turnover can cost an employer 1.5-2 times the salary of the employee, that’s not chump change. In fact, there’s a growing trend among Fortune 500 companies to design programs within their benefits packages to promote giving, volunteering and social action. Not only are these companies finding that their turnover and therefore their bottom line is dropping, but they’re finding that they’re becoming desirable places to work because they’re able to work and engage in causes they care about at the same time. It’s a classic case of what goes around, comes around, and it’s a win for everyone.

I challenge you to take action to implement a giving and volunteering program in your workplace. If you’re an employer, ask your employees what they’re passionate about. Find the non-profit that is connected to that cause and ask how you can help. If you’re an employee, start the conversation! Already have one?

Look at the program. Is there a way that you can do more with it? Maybe instead of Happy Hour, you’re meeting as a team to volunteer. Stepping up as a team and saying, “here we are, we’re ready to help”

What is economic development? The International Economic Development Council defines it as a set of programs and policies that aid in the creation, retention and expansion of jobs; the development of a stable tax base; and the enhancement of wealth. Economic development can look different community to community. Across the country, economic developers work for regional, state, county, and city economic development organizations, chambers of commerce and other business support agencies, community and neighborhood development organizations, technology development agencies, utility companies, educational institutions, consultancy firms, redevelopment authorities and many other types of organizations.

The types of activities economic developers perform can include real estate development and commercial revitalization, workforce development, infrastructure and business finance, business marketing, attraction, expansion, and retention, community development, industrial rehabilitation and location, international trade, tourism development and many more.

At Albert Lea Economic Development Agency (ALEDA) our staff is focused on business retention and expansion, marketing, attraction, and small business development and entrepreneur programming. We also have land and buildings available for lease or purchase. While we have a variety of tools available locally, we also work strategically with the MN Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), Small Business Administration, Small Business Development Center, and others to help our local businesses find the resources and tools they need to grow.

The second largest expenditure category is transportation. This accounts for the cost to finance or lease a vehicle and insure it, and it also includes urban dwellers who rely on public transportation or ride-share services to get around. Keeping transportation budgets in check can be great a way to save.

Healthcare, utilities and entertainment are the next most costly expenditures, respectively. But each of those items are considerably less expensive than the top three. Therefore, making changes to where one lives, how one gets around and how one eats can certainly add up to considerable savings.

Food is the next largest expense. While everyone needs sustenance to stay alive, how that money is allocated can make a big difference in saving versus spending. As I’m sure you know, Doris and her daughter Susan have given up on any type of fantasy/make believe. Doris rejects the concept of believing in anything that she can’t prove -- and she has taught her daughter Susan that faith in anything beyond what can be scientifically proven is silly. The people to whom the book of Hebrews was written also struggled with their faith. Following the death and resurrection of Christ, many people believed that Jesus’ return was imminent. When he did not return shortly following his resurrection, many people began to “lose their faith.” They began to think that Christ must not have been the Son of God and began looking to the things of this world to provide meaning for their lives.

We are not much different than the so-called Hebrews. And like Doris, it is easier for us to have faith in the things we can see, feel, and prove to be real. The world tells us that putting our faith in something we cannot see or prove is foolishness. And

Learning Healthy Eating Habits Start your kids on the path to good health for a lifetime

We all know difficult children. The one who only eats pizza and chicken nuggets. The one who views veggies as “vile weeds.” “Bananas are for monkeys!” Smart eating habits can be achieved for even the most stubborn of children. You can start by having regular family meals at a designated time, serving a variety of foods, and being someone your kids can look up to by eating well yourself.

Don’t wage war on food. Talk to your kids. Let them know why you make the choices you do to help everyone learn to make healthy choices.

Don’t buy those packaged chocolate chip cookies every week at the store. If you want to get the cookies, make them a true treat, a rarity. Replace one or two unhealthy snacks a day with healthier alternatives until you have

Not only does this provide stability, it will normalize your child’s eating clock and condition them as to what to expect. It also provides balance in home life. Families who eat regular meals together are more likely to eat healthier fruits and veggies, and then less likely to snack on unhealthy options or to engage in other bad behaviors such as tobacco or alcohol use. Teenagers are more likely to attempt to skip these family meals, as they typically have busier schedules and are striving to exert their independence. To help encourage them, allow them to invite a friend to dinner, let the teen be involved the meal planning, and make sure your dinnertime is free of lectures and arguing.

Don’t think you are getting off scot-free. The way you behave is often reflected in your children. Your bad eating habits will be your child’s bad eating habits. If you have an extra helping of veggies, they will likely follow you.

Conversely, if they see you eating two pieces of pie, they may also reach for that second slice. Additionally, keep an eye on portion sizes. Instead of sitting down with all of the items on the middle of the table and letting everyone serve themselves, consider dishing it out to their plates from the kitchen and putting the food away immediately.

Make it a group effort.

Don’t make food a “stand your ground” situation. This isn’t a time to bribe your kids. Conflict at mealtime only leads to negative feelings about food. This turns into poor habits as one side inevitably gives in. Parents need to establish a schedule. Snacks and meals included. In addition, don’t force a child to eat everything on their plate. Otherwise, you’ll be forcing them to eat beyond feeling full. This leads to overeating. Food is also not a substitute for love. Kids should not be rewarded for good

behavior with food. They aren’t circus seals. Give them praise or a hug.

COMPROMISE

Have your kids sit with you and plan meals. Your responsibility is to make sure each meal is balanced.

Don’t be afraid to let them make some choices, with your guidance. As you help them make correct choices, they will begin to make those choices on their own. Take them to the store with you to reinforce these better options.

Plan at least one meal per week where your kids are actively involved in the preparation of the meal. These kinds of activities get them off their electronic devices and help promote family well-being. At the end of the day, your habits rub off on your kids. Give them the tools to choose correctly, and they will use that wisdom to make better choices. Your family will grow happier and healthier.

In the Yard & Garden Mary Boorsma, Albert Lea Seedhouse and Garden Center This past spring was a glorious one for my linden tree. The tree, planted when we first moved into our home twelve years ago, had reached its exuberant adolescence and was in a mood to show off. In late June, the linden bloomed and its fragrance filled the evening air. The scent was like a neon sign to the neighborhood pollinators: COME FEAST HERE! In the evenings, I’d take my glass of wine out to the backyard, sit in the shade of the linden and look up. Dozens of Painted Lady butterflies swooped and zoomed around the tree, chasing each other in crazy loops and circling back to the linden blossoms for another sip of nectar before taking off on another drunken flight. Honeybees and bumblebees browsed among the flowers, more patient and industrious than the butterflies. It was a happy time for the linden, and for me.

Then came July. The first hint of trouble arrived on a hot Saturday morning at the Seed House Garden Center. A customer came in, worried about his tree, which had been dropping leaves. We sent him home to look harder and he was back within the hour, holding a beautifully skeletonized leaf. One look and we knew: Japanese beetles had returned.

For the next several weeks, nine out of ten insects brought into the store were Japanese beetles. Then THE STORM ripped through Albert Lea, and took massive amounts of trees and branches with it. Including my beloved linden. The Sunday after the storm, a friend brought his chainsaw and took the linden apart, limb by limb. As I loaded branches

onto a flatbed trailer, I was continually surprised by insects flying into my face and hair. You guessed it: the linden had Japanese beetles. And not just a few.

My glorious young tree had provided nourishment for butterflies. For bees. And for Japanese beetles. If the tree hadn’t come down, would I have had to face the difficult decision whether to spray insecticide? I’d been telling people all month that most insecticides deadly for Japanese beetles are also deadly for bees. I knew that facing a defoliated rose bush or grapevine brings out some very primal feelings in us humans. Should we shrug our shoulders in the face of Japanese beetles, Emerald Ash borers or the Mountain Pine beetle, destroying millions of acres in the Rockies?

This is not a question with a simple answer. It’s not a question I can answer for anyone but myself. Why are many of us enchanted by the sight of a tree covered with monarchs, but repulsed by the sight of an anthill crawling with ants? What is acceptable when we are trying to wrest our nourishment from the earth?

Here’s one thing I know: My lawn, my tree and my gardens are only one tiny piece in a much larger world. And yet, how I treat this one tiny piece affects the whole. I am sometimes like a butterfly: intoxicated by the beauty of the world. I am sometimes like a Japanese beetle: acting like there will always be another linden tree to skeletonize in my quest for satisfaction.

Owner, The Pet Authority Did you know that more than 1 in 2 dogs and 1 in 3 cats will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime? Dogs have the highest rate of cancer of any animal on the planet. They are 4x more likely to get breast cancer, 8x more likely to get bone cancer, 35x more likely to get skin cancer than humans.

Cancer is no longer just a disease, it has become an epidemic.

Studies now show that only 10% of cancer is genetic, the other 90% results from lifestyle. So the real question is, “what do I have control over to minimize the adverse things my pet is exposed to every single day?”

First we need to understand that cancer is not the tumor, the tumor is just a response to the cancer within the body. Conventional treatments, like surgery, chemo and radiation target the tumor and not the cancer itself and then we just sit and wait. We wait for it to come back, whether it’s 6 weeks or 6 months. As a pet parent I don’t want to wait, I want to be proactive and do everything I can to minimize that 90% by making important lifestyle changes for my pets. I refuse to let my pet be a statistic.

It all starts with our homes.

Think about it, our dogs and cats are walking on our floors, running in our lawns and then they come in and lick their feet clean ingesting toxic chemicals that you are using. What are you using to clean your floors, fertilize your lawn, or how about

weed prevention (there is a 90% increase in the risk of cancer when using yard herbicides)? Did you know that Bleach is considered the most toxic household cleaner? Did you know that plug in air fresheners use toxic chemicals that our indoor pets are exposed to day after day.

We live in an area where ticks, fleas and heart worm are a threat 3/4 of the year. Topical treatments for flea, tick and heart worm and all low-dose toxins and when used repeatedly month after month, year after year can have an adverse effect on your pet.

There are many great natural products on the market that are very effective which can be used solely or even intermittently with other products to reduce the toxic load.

Over-Vaccination, yes there is such a thing. I am a firm believer in vaccinating, but I don’t vaccinate my children every year for the same thing, so why would I my pets? Yearly vaccinations are against the national policy of the American Animal Hospital Assn. and the American Veterinary Medical Assn. so why are vets still recommending them yearly? For rabies vaccinations, the same dose is given to a 150# Saint Bernard that is given to a 5# Chihuahua, crazy right? I choose to opt for a Titer test (blood test to measure anti-bodies) to see if revaccination is necessary.

What fuels cancer? Sugar. Did you know that the average dry kibble is 50% carbohydrates (sugar)? If you want the perfect cancer growing diet, then feeding dry kibble is exactly what you will get. I know you want something that is easy, convenient and reasonably priced, so let me assure you that feeding a raw diet can be easy and convenient and it will cost a whole lot less in the long run than treating your pet if they get cancer and you cannot put a price on the pain your pet will go through.

Are any of these things going to cause cancer after one use?
