Iowa and the Bird Killers Iowa’s charming rural landscape is vanishing. Whirling, bird-killing, skyscraper-sized wind turbines litter the landscape by day and become a sea of red flashing lights by night. Recently, MidAmerican Energy announced plans to erect another 1,000 wind turbines in Iowa. Warren Buffet, worth a cool $73.5 billion and owner of MidAmerican Energy, proudly admitted in 2014: “We get a tax credit if we build a lot of wind farms. That’s the only reason to build them. They don’t make sense without the tax credit.” The wind subsidy is worth more than the energy the turbines will produce. The wind industry misleads people with its propaganda. Wind energy is not “clean,” “green,” efficient or cheap. Just ask your local energy cooperative. While you’re at it, ask them about being mandated or forced by the government to provide more expensive wind power to their customers. The energy produced over the life of the turbine will never offset the materials and energy used to mine, manufacture, erect and maintain the turbines. Wind developers descend on rural communities, full well knowing that they are dealing with inexperienced, non-technical and often times elderly citizens. Wind developers take advantage of rural people’s trusting nature. If you’re considering signing a wind contract, please have a trusted, competent attorney review it. Once you sign, there is no turning back. Someday, the turbines will be junk, the subsidy expired and the wind companies long gone.
