ou can bet your children are looking forward to time off this summer, but are you ready? Have you thought of a few fun or educational activities to keep your kids entertained? There are lots of local organizations that offer summer camps ranging from educational to athletic and everything in between. Whether your family chooses one week of horseback riding lessons or a variety of theater workshops and culinary lessons all summer long, the time to sign up your little ones for summer is approaching. But before you sign up — and pay — you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing the camp that’s right for your child. Here are some tips to help.

Your Best Resource

brochures are nice, but the proof is in the experience — so get feedback from other parents whenever you can.

Safety and Professionalism First Before fun comes safety. Be sure your camp has performed background checks on all counselors and caregivers. And while it’s probably not realistic to think counselors should have master’s degrees, you might not want a teenager leading your child’s day either. Camp counselors should also be trained in first aid and in some cases, CPR. Take special note of the counselor-to-child ratio. You’ll want to be sure you feel comfortable with the number of eyes that will be on your children.

schedule your child for camps throughout the summer. If your schedule is flexible, you can provide your child some structure and a little enrichment in a camp that offers a morningonly or every-other-day schedule. Think about how your camp schedule will interact with daycare, work and other activities. Even when you plan, sometimes schedules fall apart. So, know your camp’s policy on late pickups. If you’re a couple minutes late, will your camp charge a fee? If that’s the case, you might want to make friends with another camp parent as soon as possible and arrange a plan for avoiding late pick-up fees.

Activities What does your child enjoy? What does your child need? Are you looking mostly for an educational experience or an athletic one? Think about your child’s social skills and confidence level, too. This is especially important if your children won’t know any other campers on day one. In addition to talking with your child and relying on your own observations, consider turning to their teachers. Ask camp organizers for a schedule of a sample day. If you know three hours of backto-back tennis matches in July temperatures won’t suit your child, you’ll want to keep looking. Also, if your child’s attention span is best suited to changing activities every hour, find a camp that provides variety.

Cost Summer camp is expensive, but it’s worth it when your campers come home exhausted from a day full of fun and learning. Do your homework now, and cut costs where you can. Some summer camps also require your little one to bring a brown-bag lunch each day, which you’ll also want to plan for to avoid extra costs. If your child is going to a day camp, both parents work and the child is under the age of 13, you might be eligible for the Child and Dependent Care Credit on your federal taxes, which can be up to 35 percent of qualifying expenses.
