The boundary lines of the districts can be confusing. The best way to determine which district a particular address is located is to go to the county’s website, choose “Government” from the pulldown menu and the click “County Council.” There is a “Find My District” button on the right-hand side.

Richland County Council generally meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. The meetings are open to the public and are held at on the second floor of the Richland County Administration Building at 2020 Hampton St., Columbia.

Columbia has a mayor-council form of government, with an elected mayor, two at-large members and four members representing individual districts. The mayor casts one of the seven votes on the City Council. City Manager Teresa Wilson is appointed by the Council and is the chief administrative officer.

Sam Davis and Leona Plaugh are the two members of City Council whose districts include some portions of the Northeast.

ome to the wonderful Sesquicentennial State Park, the Northeast also sports the 600-acre Sandhill Research and Education Center, the annual Sparkleberry Country Fair, several golf courses and farmers markets, and top-notch schools that keep residents coming. Just a few miles away in Camden is the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site, which commemorates the 1780 Battle of Camden.

We’ll spare you the suspense: The Americans got their asses handed to them at the 1780 Battle of Camden. Some 233 years later, though, we’re over it. Hosts a Battle of Camden Remembrance Day each August, Revolutionary War Field Days each November and other events throughout the year.

Offers genealogical research facilities and maintains a diverse collection to aid visitors in their research. Collects material pertaining to the north-central section of South Carolina formerly recognized as the old Camden District.

The 18,000-seat Colonial Center is the largest arena in South Carolina, hosting major concert and entertainment acts and serving as the home for USC men’s and women’s basketball.

Goodale State Park

This 1,419-acre park features a 30-acre lake surrounded by trails, picnic areas and campsites. Also offers boating, fishing, swimming, meeting facilities and trails. SESQUICENTENNIAL STATE PARK

by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a jobs program created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression. Some of the buildings constructed by the Corps are still in use in the park. The white stones that mark the park entrance were also the work of the CCC. The word sesquicentennial means 150, and the park is named for the 150th birthday of the City of Columbia in 1936. costs $24. Dog must be present to obtain permit (for photo ID), and owner must provide proof of veterinary care (spay/neuter, rabies, parvo and kennel cough).

Picnic Shelters and Pads

Five picnic shelters are available for family or other group gatherings. The park also has uncovered picnic pads. Both are available for reservation; call the park for details.

Lodging

The retreat center at Sesqui includes dormitory-style rooms for up to 30 overnight guests.

The park is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but its hours are extended during Daylight Saving Time.

The price of admission is a bargain at $2 for adults and $1.25 for South Carolina seniors. Children 15 and younger enter for free.

The park offers a wide range of programs during the year.

You can take a hike with a park ranger, go on an “owl prowl,” participate in a family fishing clinic, attend movie night or go on nature walks.

Camping

Each site has water and 30-amp electrical hookups.

Seventeen sites accommodate RVs up to 35 feet, others up to 30 feet. Fourteen sites are pullthrough. Four sites are equipped with tent pads, which provide a sand surface and can accommodate tents up to 10-by-10 feet.

The campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers. Loop 1 is closed seasonally.

Loop 2 is open year-round.

Wildlife

Visitors may encounter fox, bobcats, white-tailed deer, flying squirrels, river otters, fox squirrels and owls.

THE SUMMIT was developed in the 1980s. Homes ranging in price from the low $100s to $300s.

WILDEWOOD is a prestigious community with homes on wooded lots around WildeWood Country Club.

BELLECLAVE is in the same area as WildeWood and features large custom-built brick homes.

ASHLEY RIDGE was established in the mid-1990s. It has brick homes that range from the low $100s to the mid $200s.

WOODCREEK FARMS is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the county with homes starting around the $300s and running into the millions. It has a mix of gated and ungated developments, many near its highly regarded golf course.
