The mission of the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events Department is to enhance the lives of our citizens by providing a diverse package of recreation and park opportunities.

FAMILY DANCE

GRANDPARENTS & ME: PADDLING IN THE PARK

Ages 6+ Celebrate Grandparents Day in style! Bring along Grandma or Grandpa (or both!) for a memorable day in the park. Take an easy guided paddle in canoes on the reservoir and then gather around a campfire on the shore for yummy s’mores! Beginner paddlers welcome. Come prepared with your silliest jokes to share around the fire. Grandkids should be at least 6 years old to participate. Canoes need at least two paddlers and can carry up to two adults and two small children. Registration closes September 4, 2022. Sunday, September 11, 2022 at 2pm - 4pm Location: Motts Run Reservoir $20/canoe. Pre-registration required.

Ages 4 – 12 yrs This is a special night out for children and grownups alike. We’ll have music, snacks and fun. A dress up night of dancing, fun and memory making! We will have professional photographer taking optional portraits for those of you who would like a memento of this special night. Attire is everything from dress casual to fancy. Be ready for a fun evening out together! Pre-registration is required. CAMPOUT IN THE PARK All Ages

Bring out the family for a fun night in the park. You will have the chance to camp at Motts Run Reservoir, enjoy s’mores on the campfire, and more. Space is limited so register early. All meals and activity materials are provided but you are responsible for your own tent and camping supplies (a supply list and additional information will be emailed upon registration). Registration closes October 9, 2022. Friday, October 14 at 5pm – Saturday, October 15 at 10am Location: Motts Run Reservoir $65/$75 for a family of 4 (resident/non-resident) ($20/each add. individual), Pre-registration is required.

PARK AFTER DARK

Ages 5+ Gather under the trees at Memorial Park after dark for an evening of spooky, family-friendly stories. On October 21, we will be led by a storyteller from the Central Rappahannock Regional Libraries through tall tales of all kinds. Bring a chair and maybe a blanket for this spookily fun evening. Family-friendly for ages 5 and up. Friday, October 21 at 6:30pm – 8pm Location: Memorial Park FREE, Pre-registration is recommended.

NERF MANIA

All Ages Come to the Fredericksburg Nationals Stadium for a day of action packed fun as we transform the stadium into a Nerf battlefield. Nerf Mania will feature play for all ages. Bring your own Nerf gun(s) and protective eye wear. We will supply the Nerf bullets (basic dart nerf bullets). Players must wear protective eyewear. Staff reserves the right to deny use of any participant’s Nerf gun that they feel is too powerful. Concessions will be available at the stadium to purchase during the event. Pre-registration is required. Participants must sign up for a two-hour wave. The stadium will be cleared out and reset between waves. To honor the contributions of our United States Veterans Friday, November 11 starting at 10:00am Procession Route: Along Washington Ave. From Mary Ball St. to George St. Veterans and Veteran Groups are invited to register to be in the procession. No commercial, for-profits nor political campaigns will be permitted in the procession. Public (family members and non-veterans) are invited to view the procession along Washington Avenue and then join the Veteran’s Day Commemoration at the Fredericksburg Area War Memorial (George St.). Free admission to the procession and the commemoration. Held rain or shine.

CHRISTMAS TIME NEW YORK CITY DAY TRIP

New York City, NY Explore New York City on your own. Enjoy holiday shopping and sightseeing. Trip goers will have a day to explore on their own. Spend your time the way you want, whether it’s shopping and shows, or visiting attractions like the 9/11 Memorial Museum, the Empire State Building and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Catch a “Hop On Hop Off” double decker bus to see the whole city (ticket can be purchase once in NYC). We will arrive in NYC about 10am and leave about 7:30pm. This will give you plenty of time to see what the Big Apple offers. Times are approximate and may vary slightly due to weather, road conditions, traffic, etc. Pre-registration is required. FAMILY & CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS EARTHQUEST PROGRAMS WALK WITH A HAWK

All Ages On our Walk with a Hawk, we will take a hike through the woods while one of the Earthquest educators teaches you about Hawks and what makes them so special. During our walk, a flighted, nonreleasable Red-Tailed Hawk will follow us through the woods in the trees. Participants are encouraged to take pictures during the hike. FALCONS IN FLIGHT

All Ages EarthQuest is back again with another feathered friend! Falcons are among the fastest flying birds on the planet. Join educators at Old Mill Park to learn more about these majestic birds. LOG CABIN STORYTIME

Ages 2+ Bring your favorite stuffy and adult to snuggle up with as we enjoy nature stories in our log cabin Nature Center at Motts Run Reservoir. We will gather in our cozy reading corner and enjoy a few stories together. After reading, we will do a nature craft related to the story. We will finish outside for some nature play time! WINTER WONDERS

Ages 3+ Come play in a winter wonderland with us at Alum Spring! After a brief winter hike to collect nature materials, we will go inside the shelter for winter craft and science stations. We will experiment with ice and snow, and create take-home art to celebrate the start of the winter season. All children should be accompanied by a paying adult. INSECT DETECTIVES PARROT PALOOZA

All Ages Birds of a feather flock together! Gather your family to enjoy this one-of-a-kind program together. Discover more about parrots with Earthquest at Parrot Palooza. Explore their adaptations, ask questions, and meet a few feathered friends along the way! All children must be accompanied by an adult. Masks are required. Please leave your pets at home. Ages 5+ Come on a hunt to scout out our local insects! We will explore the park with bug boxes and magnifying glasses to discover and catch insects. Once we return from exploring, we will work together to identify and classify the creatures in our bug boxes. Can you catch them all? Children should be accompanied by a bug-friendly adult. NATURE PROGRAMS GETTING SQUIRREL-LY

Ages 5+ We see squirrels all around us, but have you ever stopped to really watch them? Squirrels are amazing acrobats, sneaky eaters, and super storers. Come on a squirrel search with us at Alum to learn more about these nutty members of our local ecosystem! Children should be accompanied by an adult. LOVELY LEAVES

Ages 5+ Leaves are falling all around us in the Autumn! Come out to Alum Spring Park and go on hike with us to see all the beautiful colors of fall while working on a leaf scavenger hunt. We will have lots of leafy fun through leaf rubbings, sorting, an art activity, and more! Children should be accompanied by a leaf-loving adult. SPOOKY SPIDERS

Ages 5+ Did you know that spiders taste their prey using the hairs on their legs? Come learn more about these amazing arachnids at Motts Nature Center! We will go on a spider hunt and explore the different adaptations spiders use to survive. Hopefully we can convince you to let these helpful bugs stay in their webs around your house! BE A BEAVER BELIEVER

Ages 5+ Discover the effects of these cool creatures on the environment as we gather together at Motts Run. Have fun as we explore the adaptations that make beavers the master builders they are. All children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Registration closes the Thursday before the program. BATTY FOR BATS

Ages 5+ Did you know that there are over 1200 species of bats around the world? These creatures are often misunderstood even though they are a critical part of many ecosystems! We will explore echolocation, pollination, and how to protect this important mammal by becoming Bat Ambassadors. All children should be accompanied by an adult. TURKEY TREK

Ages 5+ Gobble, Gobble! Turkey Day is coming up so why not come out to learn all about this cool feathered friend? Join a naturalist as we discover more about the Wild Turkey, make our own turkey calls, and look for turkey scratches. For ages 5+; adults and children both pay. All children should be accompanied by a paying adult. Registration closes November 20. ENCHANTING EVERGREENS

Ages 5+ Most people think of pine trees when they hear evergreens, but this category extends beyond just conifers! Come out and explore the many types of plants that stay green year-round. We will also search for evergreens in our local ecosystem and learn about their many features, such as providing animal shelters, acting as seed spreaders, and more! WINTER SOLSTICE NIGHT HIKE

GREEN TEAM SERIES

Ages 5+ This series is designed to help nature lovers in our community learn about ways pollution impacts our environment and what we can do about it! At the end of the series, participants will receive a Green Team patch for all of their community clean-up efforts! All children should be accompanied by a paying adult.

Pollution Patrol

Take a closer look at pollution by exploring what it is, what its sources are, and what we can do to reduce it! We will start together at Memorial Park and walk the Canal Path to find pollution and work together to help care for the natural environment in our city. Water Clean-Up

What can we do about water pollution? Come to our water cleanup shop and buy supplies to clean up an oil spill, litter, and erosion! Will you be able to get your water clear? 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Is all the trash in your trash can actually waste? What can really go in the recycling bin? How can we repurpose daily items we usually throw away? We will explore the answers to all of these questions together in the 3Rs! We will also make our own paper together in a take-away craft from recyclable materials. Ages 6+ Bring out the whole family and learn a new skill together. Join a naturalist to learn various ways to construct and start a fire and how to safely put it out. Ages 6+ Join a naturalist at Motts Run Reservoir on the shortest day of the year and the first day of Winter - the Winter Solstice. Participants will take a night hike on one of the trails (less than a mile) and afterwards enjoy hot cocoa by the campfire. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. HOMESCHOOL NATURE NERDS

Ages 6-12 Whether you are a homeschool or an asynchronous learner, come and get in touch with your natural side! Join a naturalist for nature explorations, games, crafts, and more. This series includes five different programs and each week will feature a new exciting theme for kids to explore. This is a drop off program so kids will need to bring a small backpack with a notebook, pencil, and water bottle with them each day. Registration closes the Thursday before each date. Rec2U is a free youth program offered in neighborhoods and parks throughout the City of Fredericksburg. The program is designed to increase opportunities for youth to participate in safe, quality, structured play and recreation in areas where services are not available. Our mission is to facilitate a safe environment where youth can meet their neighbors and engage in a variety of fun recreational activities. This program offers kids of all ages, but especially school-age kids, an opportunity to engage in recreational sports, play traditional games or even create their own fun. REFEREE SHORTAGE THREATENS YOUTH SPORTS OFFERINGS The City of Fredericksburg Department of Parks, Recreation and Events offers recreation leagues designed to introduce children to the games of soccer, field hockey, baseball and basketball. Designed to be non-competitive, affordable and accessible for all children, the recreation leagues are an ideal setting for instilling a love of the game and a healthier lifestyle that can last a lifetime.

A growing shortage of referees is impacting these recreation leagues, and the City is in need of more sports officials to referee in every sport. “Consider getting involved in your local sports programs, as a proactive parent, as a volunteer coach, or as a paid sports officiate – they are all equally important as positive role models for a great youth sports experience,” stated Todd Brown, Director of Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events.

Be on the lookout for two new youth leagues to include Spring Flag Football and Fall Girls Basketball. • Our youth sports leagues are fundamental leagues. Our leagues are where players learn how to play, coaches learn how to coach and officials learn how to officiate. • Beginning in 2023 we will no longer offer sports sponsorships. For teams whom would like to have their own team party you may reserve a pavilion at one of our parks or a room at Dorothy Hart Community Center for your team party.

This decline in officials has directly impacted the City of Fredericksburg’s recreation leagues. For example, the spring 2022 soccer season lacked officials for nearly 2/3 of the games. In order to keep the season running, City staff worked with Commonwealth Cardinals FC and James Monroe High School’s boys’ varsity team who were able to provide players to officiate the youth games. While there may be many reasons sports officials have not returned to refereeing since the pandemic, the most significant of these stated factors are 1) the amount of pay received per game officiated and 2) the behavior of players and their families. “Together we can improve the culture of sports in our community. With your help officiating, coaching and positive parenting, the City’s local recreation leagues can continue to make a difference in the lives of so many children,” said Jillian Franklin, Superintendent of Sports and Fitness. 16yrs and older Using positive reinforcement methods based on current learning theory and behavior modification techniques, we will teach YOU to teach the dog to respond to your commands of: Come, Sit (and Stay) Down (and Stay) and Heel. Dogs of all ages and sizes are welcome, but the dog must be at least 14 weeks old and have had at least 2 of 4 puppy vaccinations. ADVANCED BASIC DOG MANNERS

16yrs and older In response to graduates of our Basic classes, we offer advanced skills classes for dogs who want to go a bit further in their good manners mastery. Instructor, Sarah Ferrell, will teach you positive reinforcement techniques for helping your dog master longer sit and down stays; calm, leisurely loose lead walking; and fast, enthusiastic “ Come!” when called. Dogs will learn to do their work, on request, even with distractions like strangers knocking on the door, humans jogging while they concentrate on sit or down, watching their humans even when tantalizing dog fun activity unfolds around them. For the dogs that came to a Basic Dog Manners class and now want to hone their attention and obedience response vocabulary, this is the class for you. We will work on all ten tasks of the AKC CGC test and will take the CGC test at graduation. PICKLEBALL COURTS

The City’s pickleball courts are located in Memorial Park (Kenmore) on the corner of Kenmore Avenue and Mary Ball Street at 1401 Kenmore Ave. Park hours: 6am-10pm daily. Pickleball Open Play Weekly: 8:30am - 12:30pm The courts are a non-membership public facility. This means they are open for individual public play unless officially reserved through the Parks and Recreation office. Player groups that meet at the courts must share the courts with other players who wish to play their own games.

ADULT GROUP FITNESS

18yrs and above Group Fitness is a great way to stay active and meet like-minded individuals. All fitness levels are encouraged to join. Each time you attend a class, it is one punch. Attend any class during the week with this monthly pass. Monday: Early Morning Sculpt and Tone, 8:00am - 8:50am. This class includes a varsity of exercises to strengthen, tone and keep you flexible. Core condition floor work will also be part of the class. Tuesday: Gentle Yoga, 8:00am - 8:50am. Stretch, strengthen, breathe and relax with this restorative class. Work at your individual level as the instructor guides you through a series of standing, seated, and lying postures. Appropriate for those new to Yoga and those familiar with traditional poses. Wednesday: Early Morning Sculpt and Tone, 8:00am - 8:50am. This class includes a varsity of exercises to strengthen, tone and keep you flexible. Core condition floor work will also be part of the class. Thursday: Gentle Yoga, 8:00am - 8:50am.. Weights and cardio together? Why not! This class will combine strength training and cardiovascular training into one class. Build your endurance and increase your strength during this class.

WALKING TRAIL AT DIXON PARK

Discover the outdoor fitness trail at Dixon Park (1300 Dixon Street, Fredericksburg, VA). The ten interactive stations include a balance walk, side bend, body raise, leg stretch, hamstring stretch, pull up bar, calf stretch, tension release, sit up bench, and hamstring pull bench. Visitors will find these new fitness stations along the 0.56 mile asphalt looped path inside the park. The trail is ADA accessible and is open to the public for all users. The fitness trail kit was manufactured by Fit Trail, and has features that will work all five areas of fitness through an individual’s muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, and body composition. The equipment is simple, and uses a person’s body weight for resistance. There is signage at the beginning and end of the trail, as well at each station with instructions on how to use the trail.

Friday: Pilates for the beginner to intermediate levels, 8:00am - 8:50am. Pilates is for ages and abilities! Class will focus on activating deep muscles while helping tone, streamline and improve your posture through the emphasis on body conditioning, core muscles training and flexibility. Bring your own mat and set of weights, or two if you want! Bring your own towel, water bottle, and wear comfortable clothing. Masks will be required when physical distancing is unable to be obtained. Class will be held in the auditorium. Participants will enter and exit the auditorium via the Charles St. door. A wait list will be created when a program has reached its maximum participant capacity. All in-person and mail-in registrants will be put on the waiting list unless otherwise requested. Please plan to register for activities as early as possible. Many activities fill up quickly.

REFUND POLICY

• Individuals wishing to withdraw and/or requesting a refund must do so by contacting the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events Department by phone, fax, mail or in person. • Individuals must follow up their verbal cancellation request with a written refund request and submit it to FPRE prior to cancellation deadlines. • It is the participant’s responsibility to verify receipt of refund requests. • A 15% administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests for cancellations received less than 2 weeks before program start date, unless otherwise specified. • There will be no refunds given to those who withdraw after program start date. • Refunds will require 4 weeks for processing unless paid by credit card. Credit card refunds will take 5 business days to process. • If the department cancels a program or trip, the money will be refunded. • Classes: Students must cancel 24 hours before the 1st class to be eligible for refund. No refunds will be given after the first class. • Trips: Registrants who cancel on or before the posted cancellation date shall receive a full refund. After that date, money will be refunded ONLY if the slot is filled by another participant. • Sports: No refunds will be made after the 1st game. • Camps: Cancellation requests less than two weeks (14 days) before camp start date or during camp will be handled on a case by case basis. There will be no refunds given to those who withdraw after program start date. Refunds will require 4 weeks for processing unless paid by credit card. Credit card refunds will take 5 business days to process. • Rentals: There is a 15% cancellation fee on all rentals. • Changes to these policies will be posted online and at the Community Center.

PUBLIC SCULPTURE PROJECT

The City of Fredericksburg installs an annual display of roadside sculptures in the City’s Public Sculpture Project. These sculptures are on loan from the artists for a year at a time. They are designed to enhance gateway areas of the City and are displayed at key locations for both vehicle and pedestrian visibility. This wooded park with a footbridge is equipped with a picnic shelter, picnic tables, new playground equipment, restrooms, grill and walking paths. Canal Path

The Canal Path is a paved pathway that is 1.8 miles long and winds along the canal from Fall Hill Avenue to Princess Anne Street. The Rappahannock River Heritage Trail is a 1.6 mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path, making a 3.1 mile loop, just about right for a 5K charity walk. Great for walkers and bike riders of all ages. Trails are open all day, year round.

City Dock

Located at 207 Sophia Street at the end of the street, just past the railroad tracks. This historic dock dates back to George Washington’s day. Public fishing is permitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week. City Dock is open all day, year round. Cobblestone Park

Located at the intersection of Willis Street and Cobblestone Boulevard, this ten acre, wooded park features a one-mile looped trail and views of Hazel Run. The park is open year round from 5am to 10pm daily.

Cossey Park

Located at Littlepage Street and Grove Avenue at 1601 Kenmore Avenue. Cossey Park is a neighborhood park that features winding trails, a small fishing pond, open space, a community garden, and botanical garden used for educational sessions sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension service. Open 6am-10pm, year round.

Cowan Boulevard Trail

This urban paved pathway offers walkers and bicyclists 1.72 miles of convenient access along Cowan Boulevard from Route 1 to Retail Drive. Trails are open all day, year round.

Dixon Park

Located at 1300 Dixon Street (near Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision). This outdoor facility is 46 acres and features athletic fields, including a free play field for community use, an outdoor swimming pool, playground equipment, 1.5 miles of trails, restrooms, an outdoor roller hockey rink, bike rack, and nature preserve areas. The Jogging/ Walking Trail is a paved pathway that begins at the kiosk, and is marked to help you track your distance. Doris E. Buffett Swimming Pool

Located at 1300 Dixon Street (near Route 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision). The Outdoor Swimming Pool has a great slide, fun water features for the little ones and a zero-depth entry area for easy access. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Fall Hill Trail

This urban paved pathway offers walkers and bicyclists 1.39 miles of a convenient route along Fall Hill Avenue from the Canal to Gordon W. Shelton Boulevard. Trails are open all day, year round.

Fredericksburg Dog Park

Located at 1601 Kenmore Avenue (near Mary Ball St.). This is a special fenced-in area available to City residents and their pets only. This dog park is self-monitored by its users and is designed for dogs 4 months and older. Open daily, closed dusk to dawn. The off-leash area is surrounded by a six foot fence. Water is provided for pets only. City residents who wish to use this facility need to have their dog tags, which are available at City Hall.

Fredericksburg Roller Hockey Rink

MOTTS RUN RESERVOIR

Located in Dixon Park, 1300 Dixon Street. This newly constructed outdoor roller hockey rink includes a custom Riley Manufactured board system and a NOVA Play II flooring surface featuring the Capitals logo. The rink also features a Daktronics scoreboard with the Capitals logo. The rink has been built as a partnership between the Washington Capitals and the City of Fredericksburg, with generous support from the new Fredanthropist program and the Fredericksburg Youth Roller Hockey organization. Hurkamp Park

Located at 500 William Street at the corner of William Street & Prince Edward Street or George Street & Prince Edward Street. A historic downtown park with a fountain, brick sidewalks, benches and plenty of space for a picnic. This park also features a bike rack and a bike repair station, as well as restrooms. It is home to the Fredericksburg Farmers Market which is open year-around. Hurkamp Park is open to the public and available for rentals, except during Farmers Market hours. Maury Playground

Located at 901 Kenmore Ave. at the corner of William Street and Kenmore Avenue. This open play area features a basketball court lit from dusk - 10pm, year round, as well as playground equipment. The park is open 5am-10pm daily.

Memorial Park

Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area

Located at 6600 River Road. This lovely oasis within easy reach of town provides a multitude of recreational opportunities. The 860-acre natural area, including the 160acre reservoir, is a haven for fishing, canoeing, hiking, biking, and picnicking. It also serves the residents of Fredericksburg and parts of Spotsylvania County with drinking water. The park features an orienteering course, nature center (open weekend afternoons only), over 4 miles of hiking trails, over 11 miles of biking trails, picnic tables and grills, and jon boat, canoe, and kayak rentals. A bike repair station is also located along the biking trail.

Memorial Recreation Park (also known as Kenmore Park) is located on the corner of Kenmore Avenue and Mary Ball Street at 1401 Kenmore Ave. The park is equipped with 7 tennis courts, 6 of which are lit from dusk-10pm, year round. The park also features 4 new pickleball courts at the park giving players 5 dedicated courts from which to choose. Additionally, the park has a basketball hoop, tennis practice wall, open play area, children’s play equipment, and a toddler play area. This park also features a bike rack and restrooms. Park hours: 6am-10pm daily.

Boats are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis at the reservoir. If you need a large number of boats with your rental, please indicate how many but these must be rented in person as available.

Pickleball Courts - Keep in mind the pickleball courts in Memorial Park are a non-membership public facility. This means they are open for individual public play unless officially reserved through the Parks and Recreation office. Player groups that meet at the courts must share the courts with other players who wish to play their own games.

When fishing, you may bring your own boat (ELECTRIC MOTORS ONLY) to launch on the lake, or fish from the banks. Handicap fishing pier available. A fee is charged for fishing and boat launching area. Valid fishing license required. Bait available for purchase.

No swimming, horseback riding, or all-terrain vehicles permitted. Mountain biking is allowed only on designated trails.

Summer Hours: Thursdays – Mondays, April 1 - October 31 from 7:00am - 7:00pm; the Reservoir is CLOSED on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (weather & water conditions permitting). If the weather is questionable, call before coming, (540) 7868989. As a cost saving measure, when the weather is bad we reserve the right to close the reservoir early. Motts Run Nature Center

Located in the Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area. Open Saturday and Sundays, April-October, Noon-5:00pm. Manned by volunteers, this beautiful one-room log cabin features hands-on nature displays, our resident snake, “Pocket,” and information that the whole family will enjoy. Looking for a fun family day? Visit our Nature Center and then head off on one of the hiking trails or grab a picnic table for your family lunch. Powhatan Park

Located at 1521 Powhatan Street at the intersection of Cowan Boulevard and Powhatan Street. A little less than an acre, this park has a playground, benches & open space. It’s the perfect spot for a an outdoor birthday party rental. Open 5am to 10pm daily.

Old Mill Park

Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

A 1.6 mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path making a 3.4 mile loop, just about right for a 5K charity walk. The trail, which is 10 feet wide, begins near the intersection of Princess Anne and Ford Streets at one end of the Rappahannock Canal. A bike rack and bike repair station can be found along this trail at Virginia Outdoor Center. Beautiful views of the Rappahannock River, Old Mill Park and several historic mills are seen throughout the trail. The river overlook along Riverside Drive should not be missed. Great for walkers and bike riders of all ages. Open all day, year round.

Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park, located at 713 Sophia Street (encompassing the 500-700 blocks) in Historic Downtown, is a nearly 4-acre property and the City’s first “smart” park. As its name suggests, it features fantastic Rappahannock River views and includes open space, event space, an interactive water feature, a meadow area, and a children’s play area. This park also features a bike rack and a bike repair station, as well as free wi-fi, solar powered lights and security cameras. It is located across the street from the City’s public parking garage and two blocks from the Visitor Center restrooms. The meadow area between the park and the river remains closed to help ensure the meadow mix grows for several more months. The City of Fredericksburg has received a $1.2 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to help construct a performance stage and restrooms. Riverfront Park was designed with a future stage and restrooms in mind and the plumbing and electrical connections are already in place where the stage and restrooms will be installed. Located at 2201 Caroline Street. Our most popular park, Old Mill features soccer fields, picnic shelters, a playground, restrooms, a bike rack and river front views. This park is situated along the Rappahannock River with a canoe/kayak boat launch. The Rappahannock River Heritage Trail passes directly by Old Mill Park and is a popular spot for walkers to access the trail. OLD MILL PARK STORY Yes, we all love Old Mill Park today and have wonderful memories from the past, but what about the future?

Park, often at the same time, so it is frequently overcrowded. Current parking is available on a first come, first served basis and the second comers often have to walk in to the park after finding off site parking. Excessive amounts of trash in the park’s containers have become a normal site condition during heavily visited days. And the indoor restroom facility is heavily used during peak hours. Again, those are not necessarily “bad” features when assessing Old Mill Park. They are the result of significant use of an aging park. Oh forgot to mention, this amazing piece of parkland is located in a flood plain that has often been overcome by the river. Old Mill Park has seen firsthand Mother Nature’s different plans more than once in its history. A parks and recreation department is said to be in the “smile” business. When people visit a park, they usually arrive with smiles on their faces. Whatever the purpose, their smile is the result of a desirable level of anticipation of soon taking part in their planned active or passive recreational activity. However, some of these less than desirable conditions at Old Mill Park can mean less smiles from our Old Mill Park visitors. That is concerning and the expectation is to have that frown turned upside down and as quickly as possible!

Old Mill Park is like visiting your grandparents home. It is just a really nice place to visit, comfortable, not threatening and makes you feel good when you are there. It has an amazing view of the rolling river that rarely looks the same two days in a row. It has perfectly placed trees that are great for relaxing, playing around, thinking under, and enjoying. An open field where your athletic skills or lack thereof, can be shown off to your closest friends. Picnic shelters, picnic tables, permanent grills and a playground are traditional park features, and Old Mill Park has them to attract, entertain and provide different experiences for a large, diverse audience. This riverside park has great water frontage that not only provides scenic views, it also has launch area for canoes and kayaks. This area is often the standing point for the young and old excited (or disappointed) fishermen and fisherwomen. This unique park has more than its share of resources; both natural and cultural that need to be preserved and protected. Maybe we are not all familiar them all, nevertheless we can do our part by conserving them. Did you ever hear the saying, “with the good comes the bad?” Well this isn’t really a “bad” but there are some limits, restrictions or barriers that need to be discussed. Since Old Mill Park is one of the most popular parks and destinations in the City of Fredericksburg, it possesses some weaknesses and concerns. It is a fact that a lot people come to Old Mill

Old Mill Park is being planned in multiple areas for change, enhancement, and sustainability. The Parks, Recreation and Events Department in the City of Fredericksburg is planning on kicking off a park wide master planning process this fiscal year. This comprehensive and inclusive public process gives all concerned and interested parties an opportunity to communicate what they feel Old Mill Park needs regarding its purpose to the city. Other changes planned for the park could involve more of a regular staff presence. Currently Old Mill Park has to share staff time with the other park and trail maintenance needs throughout the city. Finding the perfect implementation plan is difficult... to put it mildly. Balancing the many uses of this park by the many different users during the many different times is an act that is critical to master. It is in no way meant to exclude anyone but rather to include in a more sustainable, smile-related manner. One method of improving the current state of Old Mill Park is the new pilot program to charge entrance fees for non-residents on weekends beginning July 23, 2022. It is true that revenue from the entrance fee is needed to help maintain and operate this park simply as it is today, without future enhancements. One goal of this pilot program is an immediate improvement to customer service, especially during peak times. Our visitors will now be greeted by staff who collect fees from non-City of Fredericksburg and non-Stafford County residents. This brief interaction will allow staff and our Department to better know the audience, their needs and expectations. Will charging a parking fee during the park’s busiest times solve all of the “bad” of this park? No. But it will help in many areas that may not be easily seen by all. The benefits of this new initiative will mostly be noticeable in ensuring the parks sustainability and resiliency. Yes, we all love Old Mill Park today and have wonderful memories from the past, but what about the future? The park needs some conservation help. Managing visitation helps protect against overuse and prevents irreplaceable damage to Old Mill Park’s valuable resources. This great park needs help in the care of its grounds, facilities, amenities and infrastructure. It needs assistance to remain a safe place for families to come and spend a day creating their new memories. SNOWDEN PARK

OLD MILL PARK

Snowden Park

Snowden Park is located on Fall Hill Avenue. The park features basketball courts, playground equipment, baseball field and a community garden, with easy access to paved walking trails. Open daily 5am - 10pm

Sunshine Ballpark

Located at 1200 Wicklow Drive. The park features baseball fields, picnic tables, playground equipment and a walking trail. This park also features a bike rack and a bike repair station.

Virginia Central Railway Trail

The 2.7 mile trail for pedestrians, bicyclists and runners. This ten foot wide asphalt trail extends from the eastern end of the Cobblestone development off Lafayette Boulevard, out Lafayette Boulevard and across the Blue and Gray Parkway, then through Alum Spring Park and across Emancipation Highway (Route 1) to a point near the Idlewild neighborhood, just east of I-95. A bike rack is located at the trailhead. Scenic views of Hazel Run and the historic Virginia Central Railway trail bed are visible throughout the trail. Open all day, year round.

W. L. Harris Playground

Located in the community of Mayfield, this park has a covered shelter, playground equipment, and a basketball court lit from dusk to 10pm. Park is open daily from 6am to 10pm.

Walker-Grant Center

Located at 200 Gunnery Road. The facility is operated and maintained by city schools. It has open playing fields, basketball court lit from dusk - 10 pm year around and a children’s play area. Park is open dusk to dawn daily.

Our Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events Department operates and maintains 21 outdoor spaces in the City of Fredericksburg. The City’s parks and trails offer and encourage activities on our walking trails, playgrounds, swimming pool and the Rappahannock River.

Bicycle Repair Stations

Bicycle repair stations create a supportive environment for people on bikes, enhancing interconnectivity and convenience in Fredericksburg. Bicycle repair stations include a pump, stand and repair tools and are free for the public to use. You can find bike repair stations in several City of Fredericksburg parks and trails: Hurkamp Park, Riverfront Park, Sunshine Ballpark, on the Heritage Trail at the Virginia Outdoor enter. There is also a bike repair station located at Motts Reservoir on the mountain biking trail.
