FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 6 - 12, 2019

STOP THE BLEED

“Stop the Bleed” is a new initiative from the emergency medical staff within the Fire Department. Training has been held for City staff to use simple medical supplies and techniques to aid a victim in an emergency. Our medic staff has also hosted “pop up” training opportunities for the public and at special events.

BADGES FOR BASEBALL

This summer the Fredericksburg Fire Department led the fourth annual “Badges to Baseball” summer camp for 80 registered City children who learned life skills, played baseball and had fun with staff from the fire, police and sheriff’s departments. The mantra for the week: Have fun, learn respect, practice teamwork and make friends!

Always training for emergencies that could arise, the Fire department last fall planned a multi-agency training exercise that focused on a mass casualty event.

Preparedness and interaction with other agencies in a true emergency is the focus of such activities although we hope that our community never suffers a major incident.

COMMUNITY CENTER RENTALS

The Dorothy Hart Community Center features three meeting rooms and an auditorium. A parking lot is available behind the building and FRED bus also stops at the corner of Canal St and Charles St. The community center is available for rent on a firstcome, first served basis, around events and programs sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. We only accept reservations 6 months ahead of desired date.

Days the center is not available for rent: Earth Day Festival in April, Thanksgiving Day & Weekend, 1st Saturday of December, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & weekend and New Years Eve. For a complete list of rental rates and policies, please visit www.

GRANDPARENTS HOLIDAY DANCE Ages 4yrs – 12 yrs

Join us for our first Grandparents Holiday Dance! This is a fun way to appreciate the most special grandparents in our lives while celebrating the holiday. Girls and boys 4-12 years old are invited to take their grandmas and grandpas on a special holiday date night! We will have professional photographer taking optional portraits for those of you who would like a memento of this special night. Attire is everything from dress casual to fancy. Be ready for a fun evening out together! Pre-registration is required.

CAMPOUT IN THE PARK All Ages

Come camp along the shore and enjoy a magical autumn evening complete with a weenie roast and s’mores!

Sleep to the sound of night birds and beavers, and wake to the aroma of coffee, sausage, and pancakes! We’ll provide food, fun, and games—you provide your tent and sleeping gear! (Pick up camping list at Community Center.) Pre-registration required; one week notice needed for full refund. Open to individuals and families— no groups. (Family Fee is for 4, only). No alcohol, and no dogs please. Location: Motts Run Reservoir.

NERF MANIA

Ages 6yrs – 13 yrs

Come to the Dorothy Hart Community Center for a night of action packed fun as we transform the auditorium into a Nerf battlefield. Nerf Mania will feature several short games such as capture the flag, free play with obstacles, target practice and other favorites. Players will be divided into groups according to age. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Bring your own Nerf gun (limit only 1) and protective eye wear. We will supply the Nerf bullets.

Players must wear protective eyewear. Staff reserves the right to deny use of any participant’s Nerf gun that they feel is too powerful. Pre-registration is required.

An introduction to making handmade paper. You will learn the basic skills of how to make handmade paper from recycled materials. You will make paper using a mold and deckle and dry paper by the restraint method. We’ll make paper pulp in blenders and pull several sheets. Everyone will go home with a few sheets of paper that they have made themselves! Pre-registration is required. Location: Dorothy Hart Community Center.

COLORFUL TILES FOR 2 (Adult plus Child 8 yrs & up)

Our Alcohol ink tiles are so much fun to create, we thought it would be fun for children to try too! Each team (grown-up/child) will make their own tile to take home.

This hands on class is fun, and will bring out the hidden artist in everyone. Jennifer Galvin will be sharing her “drip technique” so even beginner artists will have a unique piece that they will be proud to take home. It would be a perfect opportunity to make a gift for a family member or friend. Pre-registration is required. Location: Dorothy Hart Community Center.

Make cards together for Christmas using handmade paper, washi tape, doilies, stickers, and other scrapbooking papers.

A fun class for adults or children or even for parents and children together! Learn how to make a pop-up tree! HORSEBACK RIDING LESSONS Beginner to Intermediate 6yrs –Adult

Our riding program progresses through beginner into intermediate levels. Basic grooming, handling, safety leads straight into understanding the tack, adjustments & correct riding position & aid applications. Partnership with the horse requires patience and developing an understanding of becoming a fair, gentle leader. A shoe or boot with a heel is the only equipment you need; we provide the rest. MOMMY AND ME CREATIVE MOVEMENT TAP/BALLET/JAZZ 3yrs-5yrs

This sweet popular class is designed for your preschooler’s active imagination and energy in a mix of dance steps taught weekly. Creative movement dances are taught to pop classical and fairytale music.

Your little ones will show off their new skills in the first class and get to wear capes, crowns and tutus. Parents and caretakers participate in part and have special seating to view each class.

Creative movement has a special day with musical instruments on the last class each month. Creative movement teaches basic dance steps in a mix of soft shoe tap/jazz/ballet. This series is taught with an emphasis on musical timing, dance steps and creative fun in an encouraging studio environment! A sweet series of ballet classes designed especially for your budding ballerinas & dashing young princes. Princess Prince Ballet introduces your children to an encouraging structured class learning basic ballet steps with an emphasis on musicality & fun! Students are choreographed with wands wings halos capes & tutus! Your child will learn to dance right before your eyes! YOUTH DRAWING/PAINTING CLASSES 5yrs - 10yrs & 11yrs – 18yrs

If you love art then this is the class for you! With the techniques you’ll learn in this class, you’ll be amazed at the beautiful works of art you can do. Students learn basic drawing skills such as composition, proportion, placement and shading and are introduced to dry media including, graphite, chalky pastels, oil pastels and charcoal. Students will also learn how to plan a painting, techniques, color basics and mixing of colors, and light and shadow using water colors and/ or acrylics. Instructor: Karen Julihn. Special Interest BEGINNER SOFT SHOE TAP/JAZZ CLASS 6yrs-8yrs

This is a fun class to learn the basics of tap and jazz. Students will do warm up stretches while learning dance terminology basic tap/jazz movements.

Students will learn shuffle ball change, grapevines, hops, heel toes while ending class with jazz, turns, jumps across and combinations. Students will work on a routines starting in October and have the opportunity to perform in the winter production of “The Nutcracker Ballet” on Friday, December 14th at 7:00 pm at the Dorothy Hart Community Center. Attire: black leotard, tan tights, black jazz shoes or black leather ballet. Show rehearsal in December- TBD. Pre-registration is required. Instructor: Virginia Westcott. MUSICAL THEATER, DANCE, VOICE AND ACTING 7yrs-10yrs & 11yrs-16 yrs

This musical theater series of classes teaches a variety of dance voice and acting. This is a performance class. Your students will have the opportunity to learn and perform numerous parts throughout the year. Instructor will teach dance choreography in accordance of age levels for pieces. Your stars will learn song and dance routines to famous Broadway music, as well as classical themes in our winter Production “The Nutcracker Ballet” on Friday, December 14th at 7:00 pm at the Dorothy Hart Community Center.

Musical theater plays important roles in winter performance.

Theater students will be learning about costumes scenery stage direction and take on active roles for the theater production! Do you like comics? Would you like to create your own? Over four weeks students will receive an introduction to the comic medium and begin work on their own comic.

YOUTH BALLET ARTS EDUCATION SERIES OF HOMESCHOOLERS 8yrs-12yrs & 13yrs-16yrs (taught in combined in age groups)

This is a daytime youth ballet arts education class designed especially for homeschool children. Your students will take ballet barre, center across the floor, and jumps turns. Ballet students are taught French vocabulary throughout class and students will learn the different dance syllables ballet repertoires such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Nutcracker and more! A short study each month of famous Directors, Company’s Composers, Conductors and their works. October we’ll view a taping of a famous ballet in class. This homeschool series will devote a 15 minute portion of each class to dance art education. A great opportunity to study and learn about the performing arts and the companies throughout the world while learning ballet! Instructor works individually with all level and no experience needed. STARFIRES Starfires is a continuing and progressive program that your children will love! Join the award-winning, team-spirited Starfires and bring a friend with you! This is an exciting chance to learn high-spirited CHEER and DANCE routines while developing poise coordination and showmanship. Learn Cheer and Dance motions, kicks, jumps, tumbling, and fun routines. This class is a chance to prepare for high school tryouts, march and compete in parades, and competitions.

Pre-requisite: Must be enrolled into Starfires Prep in order to participate.

This series of classes is designed for the serious student who has some previous dance training that loves to dance & perform!

Intermediate Ballet has a full barre center turns petite and grand allegro variations *Pointe Pas de duex by permission from instructor classical choreography ballet vocabulary taught in classical syllabus with some modern ballet incorporated into this series with a strong emphasis on technique and musicality. A wonderful series for the dedicated dancer Intermediate Ballet will perform principal variations, leading roles, and new works for performance. We are excited to continue our monthly life-skills cooking class for youth 3-25 years of age, of any ability. We would like to encourage our special needs community to participate in these fun adaptive cooking classes.

We will be providing communication tools, visual aids, and hand over hand support as needed. Each student will be assisted based on their ability and desire. Gluten Free and Dairy Free options available upon early request to April@CookingAutism.org.

Our classes will focus on FUN, fine motor skills, communication, socialization, answering questions, cooking, and eating. The best part… everyone will get to eat their own masterpieces! In collaboration with King George Parks and Recreation and Caroline Parks and Recreation, this league is open to youth ages 14 – 17 years old. This is a coed league. Practices begin January 6th and will take place at Walker Grant Middle School. Weekend games will be played versus King George and Caroline opponents. Weeknight games will be versus opposing Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation teams. This is a travel intensive program as league games will be played in Fredericksburg, Caroline, and King George. Our new inline roller hockey rink that we built at Dixon Park, thanks to a partnership with the Washington Capitals Hockey Team, will be open for play this fall.

NATURE CHILDREN & ADULTS School Programs DIPNETTING FOR DRAGONFLIES

Discover an entire world beneath the water’s surface along the lakeshore of Motts Run Reservoir. With the aid of hand-held dip nets, students collect tiny aquatic insects and other invertebrates, amphibians and perhaps a turtle or two! The lake community as a whole is discovered through observation of plants and their consumers on up the food chain. Note-Program also includes teacher-led woodland hike and visit to the Motts Run Nature Center.

Check out an owl’s diet by dissecting its previous meal as you use tools to pick apart a dried pellet (the undigested and regurgitated remains of an owl’s meal) and sort through bones, skulls and fur to examine what it ate. ADULT BALLET STRETCH AND TONE Ages 12yrs -Adult

This Ballet Stretch and Tone class is geared for adults and teens of all levels to stay in shape this winter and spring. Relax and unwind to a simplified ballet stretch and tone class. These classes incorporate slow ballet stretches with safe strengthening movements improving balance and posture. No experience needed. Instructor of 25 years helps you thru all movements at your own pace. Adults and teens alike will learn ballet stretches, increase flexibility, relax muscle tension, strengthen bones, and elongate muscles while building stamina. This is not a dance class, it is barre center and floor work emphasizing stretching and toning elements of ballet.

Each student gets individual instruction. This series, of classes aims at softly correcting alignment which aids towards good posture benefiting general wellness. BASIC DOG MANNERS 16yrs –Adult

Using positive reinforcement methods based on current learning theory and behavior modification techniques, we will teach YOU to teach your dog to respond to your commands of: Come, Sit (and Stay) Down (and Stay) and Heel. Instructor, Sarah Ferrell, teaches the skills dogs need to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. Dogs of all ages and sizes are welcome, but the dog must be at least 14 weeks old and have had at least 2 of 4 puppy vaccinations.

ADVANCED BASIC DOG MANNERS 16yrs -Adult

In response to graduates of our Basic classes, we offer advanced skills classes for dogs who want to go a bit further in their good manners mastery. Instructor, Sarah Ferrell, will teach you positive reinforcement techniques for helping your dog master longer sit and down stays; calm, leisurely loose lead walking; and fast, enthusiastic “ Come!” when called. Dogs will learn to do their work, on request, even with distractions like strangers knocking on the door, humans jogging while they concentrate on sit or down, watching their humans even when tantalizing dog fun activity unfolds around them. For the dogs that came to a Basic Dog Manners class and now want to hone their attention and obedience response vocabulary, this is the class for you. INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME OF AMERICAN MAH JONGG 16 years -Adult

Why are so many people playing Mah Jongg? The simple answer is “Because it is loads of fun!” It is both simple and complex, all at the same time.

Besides being fun, it is excellent “exercise” for the brain. Mah Jongg also cuts through the distance that our modern digital age has created. It brings people together and creates a comfortable and friendly social experience. Warning: Playing Mah Jongg can be addictive! It is very exciting but learning the game in the beginning can be challenging. • Individuals wishing to withdraw and/or requesting a refund must do so by contacting the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation and Events Department by phone, fax, mail or in person.

• Individuals must follow up their verbal cancellation request with a written refund request and submit it to FPRE prior to cancellation deadlines.

• It is the participant’s responsibility to verify receipt of refund requests.

• A 10% administrative fee will be charged on all refund requests for cancellations received less than 2 weeks before program start date, unless otherwise specified.

• There will be no refunds given to those who withdraw after program start date.

• Refunds will require 4 weeks for processing unless paid by credit card. Credit card refunds will take 5 business days to process.

• If the department cancels a program or trip, the money will be refunded.

• Classes: Students must cancel 24 hours before the 1st class to be eligible for refund. No refunds will be given after the first class.

• Trips: Registrants who cancel on or before the posted cancellation date shall receive a full refund. After that date, money will be refunded ONLY if the slot is filled by another participant.

• Sports: No refunds will be made after the 1st game.

• Camps: Cancellation requests less than two weeks (14 days) before camp start date are eligible for a 50% refund. And there are no refunds on cancellations less than 7 days before program start date.

• No refunds on Kings Dominion Tickets.

• Changes to these policies will be posted online and at the Community Center.

WAITING LIST

A wait list will be created when a program has reached its maximum participant capacity. All in-person and mail-in registrants will be put on the waiting list unless otherwise requested. If a space becomes available and a person’s waiting list status changes, you will be contacted by the department. Waiting lists do not roll over from previous, different sessions.

ALUM SPRING PARK

Cowan Boulevard Trail

This urban paved pathway offers walkers and bicyclists 1.72 miles of convenient access along Cowan Blvd from Route 1 to Retail Drive. Trails are open all day, year round.

Dixon Park

Located at 1300 Dixon Street (near Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision). This outdoor facility is 46 acres and features athletic fields, including a free play field for community use, roller hockey rink, outdoor swimming pool, playground equipment, 1.5 miles of trails, restrooms, and nature preserve areas. The Jogging/ Walking Trail is a paved pathway that begins at the kiosk, and is marked to help you track your distance. Dixon Park is open dawn to dusk. Doris E. Buffett Swimming Pool Alum Spring Park

Located at the end of Greenbrier Drive. Discover this hidden treasure within our city limits! This wooded park is equipped with a renovated picnic shelter, picnic tables, restrooms, grills, play equipment, and walking paths. Alum Spring Park is open yearround, dawn to dusk. Play equipment is currently unavailable.

Canal Path

This pathway is 1.8 miles long and winds along the canal from Fall Hill Avenue to Princess Anne Street. Great for walkers and bike riders of all ages. Open all day, year-around.

City Dock

Located at 207 Sophia Street at the end of the street. This historic dock dates back to George Washington’s day. Public fishing permitted. Open all day, year round.

Cobblestone Park

Located at the intersection of Willis Street and Cobblestone Blvd., this ten acre, wooded park features a one mile looped trail and views of Hazel Run. The park is open year round from 5 am to 10 pm daily.

Cossey Botanical Park

Located at Littlepage St & Grove Ave. The Cossey Botanical Park is a neighborhood park that features winding trails, a small fishing pond, open space, a community garden and botanical garden used for educational sessions sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension service. Open 6am – 10pm, yeararound.

Memorial Park

Located at 1301 Kenmore Avenue, at the corner of Kenmore Ave. and Mary Ball St. Memorial Recreation Park (also known as Kenmore) is located on the corner of Kenmore Ave. and Mary Ball St. The park is equipped with 7 tennis courts, 6 of which are lit from dusk - 10pm, year around. The park also features pickleball courts, basketball hoop, tennis practice wall, open play area, children’s play equipment, and a toddler play area. Park hours: 6am - 10pm daily.

Fredericksburg Dog Park

MEMORIAL PARK

Located at 1601 Kenmore Avenue (near Mary Ball St.). This fenced in area, available to City residents and their dogs only, is self monitored by its users. City residents who wish to use this facility need to have City dog tags for their pets, which are available at City Hall. Open daily from dawn to dusk.

Hurkamp Park

Located at 500 William Street at the corner of William St & Prince Edward St. or George St. & Prince Edward St. A historic downtown park with a fountain, brick sidewalks, benches, public restrooms and plenty of space for a picnic. Also home to our Fredericksburg Farmers Market that is open year-around. Park is open daily 5am - 10pm. Motts Run Reservoir Recreation Area

Located at 6600 River Rd. The 860-acre natural area, including the 160acre reservoir, is a haven for fishing, canoeing, hiking, and picnicking.

It also serves the residents of Fredericksburg and parts of Spotsylvania County with drinking water. The park features an orienteering course, nature center (open weekend afternoons only), over 4 miles of hiking trails, picnic tables and grills, and jon boat, canoe, and kayak rentals.

Boats are reserved on a first come first served basis at the reservoir. If you need a large number of boats with your rental please indicate how many but these must be rented in person as available.

No swimming, horseback riding, or all-terrain vehicles permitted.

Mountain biking is allowed only on designated trails.

When fishing, you may bring your own boat (ELECTRIC MOTORS ONLY) to launch on the lake, or fish from the banks. Handicap fishing pier available. A fee is charged for fishing and boat launching area. Valid fishing license required. Bait available for purchase.

Summer Hours: Thursdays – Mondays, April 1 - October 31 from 7:00am - 7:00pm; the Reservoir is CLOSED on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (weather & water conditions permitting). If the weather is questionable, call before coming (540) 786-8989. As a cost saving measure, when the weather is bad we reserve the right to close the reservoir early.

Open Saturday and Sundays, April – October, Noon-5:00pm Manned by volunteers, this beautiful one-room log cabin features hands-on nature displays, our resident snake “Pocket” and information that the whole family will enjoy.

Looking for a fun family day? Visit our Nature Center and then head off on one of the hiking trails or grab a picnic table for your family lunch.

W. L. Harris Playground

A 1.6 mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path making a 3.4 mile loop, just about right for a 5K charity walk.

The trail, which is 10 feet wide, begins near the intersection of Princess Anne and Ford streets at one end of the Rappahannock Canal. Beautiful views of the Rappahannock River, Old Mill Park and several historic mills are seen throughout the trail. The river overlook along Riverside Drive should not be missed. Great for walkers and bike riders of all ages. Open all day, year round.

Located at 713 Sophia Street on the beautiful Rappahannock River, in the 500-700 blocks of Sophia St. Renovations are ongoing.

Open daily 5am - 10pm until July 2019. The park will be closed for construction soon for renovations. For more information on renting the park or about ongoing renovations, call Parks, Recreation & Events office 540-372-1086.

Snowden Park

Located on Fall Hill Avenue has been re-opened. The park features new basketball courts, playground equipment and a baseball field.

Open daily 5am - 10pm.

SNOWDEN PARK

This 2.7 mile trail for pedestrians, bicyclists and runners extends from the eastern end of the Cobblestone development off Lafayette Boulevard out Lafayette Boulevard, across the Blue & Gray Parkway, then down Alum Spring Road and behind Alum Spring Park to the Route 1 Bypass. Scenic views of Hazel Run and the historic Virginia Central Railway trail bed are visible throughout the trail. Open all day, year round.

Located in the community of Mayfield, this park has a covered shelter, playground equipment, and a basketball court lit from dusk to 10pm. Park is open daily 6am - 10pm.

Walker-Grant Center

Located at 200 Gunnery Road. The facility has open playing fields, basketball court lit from dusk - 10 pm year around & a children’s play area. Park is open dusk to dawn daily.

Special Event Application Our Special Event Application is a streamlined approach to gather information about your event and to help you navigate the City’s requirements for hosting your event in the City.

Our event team is available to answer your questions and guide you through the checklist Our Special Events Team: Kim Herbert, and Sammy Walker. for a successful, compliant event. Submission of an application is not a guarantee of approval.

A Special Event Application is required for:

1) Any organized event of 20 or more persons upon any city street or public sidewalk within the City must submit a special event application.

2) Events that are open to the public, have an attendance of over 100 people and are held within a city parks will require a special event application along with a Park Rental Form.

3) Requesting any street closure within the City, regardless of event size, requires a special event application.

Residential Block Party Permits

Block parties are gatherings of residents of a specific City block and their guests.

Block parties are NOT for open invitation and do not extend beyond the specific residents of that City block and their particular guests, and no longer than 4 hours. More than half of adjacent property owners must sign the petition to indicate agreement to the block party. Please submit 30 days prior to block party date.

6 New Sculptures Coming in October!!

PUBLIC SCULPTURE PROJECT

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission launched the City of Fredericksburg’s Public Sculpture Program in the fall of 2016.

Now in its third year, the City has successfully issued a call for artists and selected 6 new sculptures for roadside display.

These sculptures are designed to enhance gateway areas of the City and are displayed at key locations for both vehicle and pedestrian visibility.

These artworks provide an unexpected and unique opportunity to view art in our city. These sculptures will be rotated every year and are on “loan” from the 6 artists. Interested in purchasing one of these pieces? Contact info@fredarts.com.

Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation

Director’s Fund Summer storms have destroyed our playground at Alum Springs Park. This playground has been the play place for many, many children over the years.

The City will be rebuilding it, but we would like to make it bigger, better and accessible to more children. To do so, we need your help!

The Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation Director’s Fund has been established at the Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region.

The purpose of the fund is “to enhance, expand or preserve parks and recreation facilities, program and outdoor spaces to increase accessibility, improve social equity and provide opportunities for healthier, more fulfilling lifestyles for the citizens of Fredericksburg.”

We would like to use money contributed to this fund before October 15, 2019 to add additional pieces and ADA access to the Alum Springs Park playground so more children can enjoy the park.

Donations to the fund are tax deductible. Any donations collected after October 15, 2019 will be used for future projects that meet the goals of the fund.
