SPORTS DIVISION UPDATES

*Department policy states that special requests for team placement cannot be honored. This includes requests for carpooling, assignment with friends, or particular coaches, specific practice times, etc.*

Our youth sports leagues are fundamental leagues. Our leagues are where players learn how to play, coaches learn how to coach and officials learn how to officiate.

Interesting in sponsoring one of our youth sports leagues? Contact the Youth Sports Division for more information. For teams who would like to have their own team party, you may reserve a pavilion at one of our parks or a room at Dorothy Hart Community Center.

We will be partnering with Spotsylvania Little League for spring and fall youth baseball and softball. The City of Fredericksburg and South Stafford residents are now eligible to participate with Spotsylvania Little League. Our home fields located at Snowden Park and Sunshine Ballpark will be utilized for practices and games in addition to other fields outside of the City limits. Look for more information on fall registration at spotsyll.org.

DEPARTMENT NEWS

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MOTTS RUN RESERVOIR

2024 is a huge year for one of our City’s most beloved natural areas. Not only is the park as a whole celebrating 50 years, but Camp Wildwood has been held there for 30 years, the Nature Center has been open for 20 years, and “The Hideout” nature play area has been open for 10 years!

The Motts Run Reservoir Recreational Area officially opened to the public in 1974 and has been a favorite destination for hikers, fishers, nature enthusiasts, picnickers, and more in the years since. In 2020, FredTrails completed the Reservoir Loop Trail which runs all the way around the reservoir (8 miles). In total, there are about 20 miles of hiking and/or biking trails in the park. Marina concessions offer boat rentals, fishing passes, and bait from April to October.

Camp Wildwood celebrated its 30th anniversary this summer. This camp for kids ages 6-14 has been canoeing, exploring trails, and getting dirty in the woods since 1994. Now, grown-up campers are sending their kids to camp at Motts Run too! What started as just a few weeks offered each summer, now has a full summer of 7 weeks which provides camp for over 150 kids every year. Campers canoe and hike every day as well as practice other outdoor skills like fire making and shelter building in between playing games and singing songs.

The Motts Run Nature Center had its grand opening on April 22, 2004. Since then, this volunteer-run log cabin (open to the public on weekend afternoons, in April-October) has been visited by thousands of people every year. Pocket the Corn Snake (who turns 27 this year) has made her home there since the opening and attracted even more curious guests. In 2021, another corn snake, Red, made his home in the Nature Center as well. In addition to the live snakes, the Nature Center boasts wonderful nature displays about local flora and fauna.

Like many other Eagle Scout projects around the park, The Hideout exemplifies the hard work and dedication of park volunteers and donors. Over the past 10 years, additional features have been added to the original design to make this non-traditional play area last for years to come. The nature play space now features a mini log cabin, sandbox, jumping logs, and grounded canoes for imaginative play.

To celebrate these key milestones, there is fun lined up throughout September!

To celebrate these key milestones, there is fun lined up throughout September. Help us celebrate all the wonderful years by coming out for Concerts by Canoe each Wednesday evening in September. All the fun leads up to our Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 28 – there will be live music, food trucks, boating, and more to explore! Concerts by Canoe will be $10/car (additional fees apply for boat rentals) and the celebration on September 28 is FREE! To find out more about these events and to pre-register, visit www.FXBGparks.com.

From team-building retreats to birthday parties and casual hikers to expert fishermen, the wide range of activities available at Motts Run Reservoir over the years has made it an amazingly unique destination for the community. In the coming year, the Parks and Recreation Department will be pursuing a Master Plan for Motts Run Reservoir to plan for the decades to come! Be on the lookout for ways you can provide your input for the future of Motts Run. n
