Department Mission The mission of the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities Department is to enhance the lives of our citizens by providing a diverse package of recreation and park opportunities.

A parallel mission of the department is to provide optimum service to the general public and staff through the City’s Public Facilities Divisions by administering a program of routine custodial maintenance, repair and upkeep, scheduled facility improvements and renovations, and immediate responses to emergencies and disruptions to the work place or service environments.

Departmental Functions The Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities is a municipal recreation department that provides comprehensive year around programming for sports, fitness, special events and nature programs for all ages. The department operates and maintains 21 outdoor spaces that offer and encourage activities on our walking trails, playgrounds, swimming pool and the Rappahannock River. We strive to meet the needs of the population by providing affordable programs for City residents and non-residents alike.

I know you all are steadily getting your children ready to either go to school for the first time or getting them prepared for the next grade.

I have very fond memories of these experiences and feelings that the first day of school brings to kids and parents. While I couldn’t help reminisce about their childhood, I also saw such promise in the little people they were growing up. We never want them to grow up too fast but we as parents have the obligation to have them grow into the best people they can be. Let Parks & Rec help you do that as we expand education outside of the class room to make learning fun.

Is your child: Happiest in the dirt? Get them out of the classroom and get their hands dirty at one of our Saturday nature programs at Motts Run. Whether its dippnetting at Stream Survey, learning to follow animal tracks at Tricky Tracks or having them learn to build a fire, we will teach them skills to be applied both at school and in life.

Excited by learning how things work? Then Weird Science or Engineering for Kids is right up their alley! They will get a chance to take what they learn in their classes apply it in a super fun creative way in either of these stimulating classes.

A sports fanatic? Well one of our youth sports or even karate would really get them excited! Basketball, a baseball clinic, karate, and standup paddboarding course will all help your child learn teamwork, discipline, focus, sportsmanship and other invaluable skills that sports helps develop.

Let us help you help your child grow into the best individual they can possibly be by enriching their lives with some of our amazing programming.

Children’s Activities Youth Tumbling

5yrs – 11yrs Basic to intermediate level skills will be taught in a fun, non-competitive environment with individualized instruction catered to your child’s abilities. Instructor Renee Embrey has over 30 years of experience with recreational gymnastics. Preregistration requested. Engineering For Kids Electronic Game Design (Invader Defense Games)

7yrs – 12yrs During the Electronic Game Design: Invader Defense classes, students will use Multimedia Fusion 2® to create their own video game. Whether students wish to fire marshmallows or missiles, they build a complete video game from start to finish. They program characters to survive a wave of enemy attacks in order to reach the next level. At the end of the class, students take home a copy of the game they create. Pre-registration required.

7yrs – 12yrs During the LEGO® Robotics Mission to Mars classes, students design and program robots to explore an unknown planet, find safe shelter, and collect soil samples from the planet. Horseback Riding - Beginner 10yrs - 18yrs (8 and 9yrs with a background in drawing) This course teaches fundamental cartooning skills for anyone who loves working with the comic, graphic novel or comic book medium, including styles like manga and anime. In this class you’ll learn about styles, action poses and layout. Instructors will also help you fine tune your own personal style of cartooning. Pre-registration required. Children’s Activities RAD for Kids!

8yrs -10yrs Help your children learn the things to look out for and the things they can do to protect themselves should they find themselves in a scary situation. This program is being brought to you in conjunction with the Fredericksburg Police Department as a community service. Pre-registration required. 6yrs-12yrs Join paleontologist Jon Bachman as we explore sandstone cliffs which hold the record of 112-million-year-old swamps and stream channels. Though the dinosaurs are gone, their ancient environment can still be visited. (Pre-registration required.)

Homeschool Nature Club

Study Skills Strategy Course

11yrs - Adult Study Skills Strategies is designed to help students with a desire to improve their learning skills. It is designed to help middle school through adult students learn how to learn more efficiently and effectively. New students, established students, and high performing students can all benefit from this course. Not just for children, the course is also perfect for adults who are going back to school. Three one-hour classes. Pre-registration required.

Dino Swamp Trek at Alum Spring Park

6yrs – 11yrs Calling all homeschoolers 1-5th grades to take a break from the books and join a nature club. We’ll meet one Monday a month from September through December (check the dates). Wear appropriate outdoor clothing (no flip flops) and bring water. NO non-registered siblings please. Pre-registration required for entire series.

Geo Time on Government Island 12yrs – Adult (Everyone pays) Join geologist Tom Specht for a look at the rock that made Government Island famous!

Spooky Stories by the Shore!

5yrs – Adult (Everyone pays) Walk the trail of spooks and spiders, to the shore for a roastingfire! Enjoy the enchantment of Halloween as we warm you with hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows, then chill you to the bone with spooky stories and other surprises. Great fun for the entire family, so secure your spot of doom soon! Dress warmly and bring a flashlight and blanket-amphitheatre seating provided.

We’ll do some citizen science as we test the water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH then draw some conclusions. Wear shoes that can get wet, as we will be wading.

Nature Programs Campout in the Park

All Ages Come camp along the shore and enjoy a magical autumn evening complete with a weenie roast and s’mores! Sleep to the sound of night birds and beavers, and wake to the aroma of coffee and French toast. We’ll provide food, fun, and games— you provide your tent and sleeping gear! Autumn Leaves Hike

Take an autumn hike and learn about trees and seeds as we soak up the sounds and smells of the season. Dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Great family fun.

Nature Crafts for Christmas

7yrs – 16yrs Hand-dipped candles, leaf-printed wrapping paper, leather treasures and more! Enjoy this annual tradition in our cozy log cabin. Everyone leaves with a handful of gifts to delight the giver and the receiver.

Wear old clothes and a jacket – some activities outside. Kids 9 and under must attend with non-paying adult. Pre-registration required.

Stand up Paddle Board Essentials Course

Youth Basketball

6yrs – Adult This is a 4 hour introductory instruction to Stand up Paddle Boarding (SUP). Basic paddle strokes, water safety, and simple rescue techniques will be taught by our ACA Certified instructors.

Fall Baseball Clinic

7yrs-15yrs This NEW clinic will teach the basic skills of baseball including throwing, fielding, hitting, bunting and other techniques in a non-competitive environment. Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation volunteer coaches will introduce and improve player’s skills through this clinic.

Lil’ Hoopsters Basketball

5yrs-6yrs The FUNdamental program teaches girls and boys 5-6 year olds the basic skills of the game including dribbling, passing, shooting, defense and sportsmanship. Strength, Tone and Sculpt

Pilates is for all ages, genders and abilities! Most body aches and pains are due to muscular imbalance. Pilates strengthens the muscles that support the spine (the neck, shoulders, abdominals, hips and thighs); assisting to realign the spine and strengthen the body from the inside out. This class will focus on activating deep muscles while helping tone, streamline and improve your posture through the emphasis on body conditioning, core muscle training, and flexibility. Conversational Italian for Beginners

13yrs - Adult Conversational Italian is for teens and adults. It is a classroom environment where the instructor will familiarize the class with basic words and phrases in Italian. This course teaches the basic skills to those who do not know Italian so they can converse with an Italian speaker.

Parks & Facilities Alum Spring Park (Located at the end of Greenbrier Dr) Discover this hidden treasure within our city limits! This wooded park is equipped with a renovated picnic shelter,picnic tables, restrooms, grills, play equipment, and walking paths.

Alum Spring Park hours vary by season.

Dixon Park

This outdoor facility is 46 acres and features athletic fields, outdoor swimming pool, playground equipment, 1.5 miles of trails, restrooms, and nature preserve areas. Dixon Park is located on Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision.

(Located at 408 Canal St.) The community center is home to many of our classes and programs offered as well as the administrative offices. This facility features three meeting rooms and auditorium. FRED bus also stops at the corner of Canal St & Charles St for easy access.

Fredericksburg Dog Park (Located on

Kenmore Ave. near Mary Ball St.) This fenced in area available to City residents and their dogs only, is self monitored by its users.

City residents who wish to use this facility need to have City dog tags for their pets, which are available at City Hall. Summer Hours: April 1 - October 31 6 am-8 pm Daily. Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 7 am - 5 pm Daily.

Old Mill Park

(Located at 2410 Caroline St.) Our most popular park, Old Mill features soccer fields, picnic shelters, a playground, restrooms and river front views. Snowden Baseball Fields

Located on Fall Hill Avenue, Snowden features two baseball diamonds as well as generous parking for sports enthusiasts who are attending practices and games. The park also has an open field area for recreational activities such as field hockey, Frisbee toss and more.

Snowden Park Playground

Located on Fall Hill Avenue, this park has playground equipment and basketball courts. The playground structure is designed for 5 – 12 yr. olds and includes an independent swing set and a small slide for the little tykes. The court is a two bank basketball court. Plus, there is plenty of open space for other outdoor activities.

W. L. Harris Playground

Located in the community of Mayfield, this park has a covered shelter, playground equipment, and a lighted basketball court.

Parks & Facilities

(Located at 6600 River Rd.) This 860-acre natural area including the 160-acre reservoir, is a haven for fishing, boating, canoeing, hiking, and picnicking. The park has jon boats and canoes available for rental, picnic grills and tables, and over 4 miles of hiking trails. You may bring your own boat (ELECTRIC MOTORS ONLY) to launch on the lake, or fish from the banks. Handicap fishing pier available. Fee charged for fishing and boat launching area. No swimming, horseback riding, biking of any kind, or all-terrain vehicles permitted.

The log cabin Nature Center, which is manned completely by volunteers, is where most of our nature programs and classes are held.

Refund Policy

• ALLOW THIRTY DAYS FOR PROCESSING. • All cancellations and refund requests for activities must be made through our office either by phone, fax, mail or in person.

• It is the participant’s responsibility to verify receipt of refund requests.

• If the department cancels a program or trip, the money will be refunded.

• Classes: Students must cancel 24 hours before the 1st class to be eligible for refund. No refunds will be given after the first class.

• Trips: Registrants who cancel on or before the posted cancellation date shall receive a full refund. After that date, money will be refunded ONLY if the slot is filled by another participant.

• Sports: No refunds will be made after the 1st game.

• Changes to these policies will be posted online and at the Community Center.

Waiting List

A wait list will be created when a program has reached its maximum participant capacity. All in-person and mail-in registrants will be put on the waiting list unless otherwise requested. If a space becomes available and a person’s waiting list status changes, you will be contacted by the department. Waiting lists do not roll over from previous, different sessions.

Please plan to register for activities/programs as early as possible. Many activities fill up very quickly.

In consideration of my/the participant’s being permitted to enroll in this activity, I hereby release, indemnify and hold harmless the City of Fredericksburg, its employees, agents, operators, and instructors from any and all claims, demands, costs, charges, and expenses for harm, injury, damage or loss which may be sustained by me/the participant as a result of or relating to participation in this activity.

Photo Permission by Parent, Legal Guardian or Legal Custodian: I give the City of Fredericksburg, its officials and employees, permission to photograph or videotape the above named participant, who is a juvenile, during his or her participation in the Recreation Program. I understand and agree that the participant’s picture and any materials he or she has produced during the program may be placed on the City’s website or within other materials publicizing the City’s Recreation Programs. I also give permission for the participant, his or her picture, to appear in the newspaper, social media, or on television as a participant in the Recreation Program.
