Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Department Mission The mission of the Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities Department is to enhance the lives of our citizens by providing a diverse package of recreation and park opportunities.

A parallel mission of the department is to provide optimum service to the general public and staff through the City’s Public Facilities Divisions by administering a program of routine custodial maintenance, repair and upkeep, scheduled facility improvements and renovations, and immediate responses to emergencies and disruptions to the work place or service environments.

Departmental Functions The Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation, and Public Facilities is a municipal recreation department that provides comprehensive year around programming for sports, fitness, special events and nature programs for all ages. The department operates and maintains 21 outdoor spaces that offer and encourage activities on our walking trails, playgrounds, swimming pool and the Rappahannock River. We strive to meet the needs of the population by providing affordable programs for City residents and non-residents alike.

I hope you had a great summer despite the heat and humidity! Our staff had a great summer as well and we enjoyed getting to know so many new children in our camps and programs. Some were participants and others were employees or volunteers. As parents, grandparents, family and friends, we should be proud of them all because they had fun and did GREAT work!!

As a Department, we have done some great work as well, and I wanted to take the time to thank you all for your votes and your support of our parks and our programs. This year we are honored to have received the following awards: Fredericksburg Parent & Family Magazine’s Family Favorites Awards: • “Best Park” category – 1st place Alum Spring Park, 2nd place Old Mill Park and 5th place Kenmore Park • “Free Things To Do” category - Picnic in the Park tied for 1st place • “Best Day Camp” category – 4th place Summer Fun Festival • “Outdoor Fun” category - The Heritage Walking Trail won 2nd place and Picnic in the Park won 4th place Free Lance-Star Reader’s Choice Awards: • Best Community Event - 1st place Fredericksburg Christmas Parade (A HUGE thanks you to ALL the City departments that come together to make that successful) • Best Hiking Trail – 1st place Canal Path Loop with Alum Spring Park coming in as a runner-up • Best Public Park – 1st place Alum Spring Park Fall is quickly approaching and bringing the return of beautiful leaves, cooler temps, and the school buses. We have some great fall trips and programs lined up for you and I hope that you will take this opportunity to look through our catalog, visit our website, and join us for some fall fun.

Children’s Activities Brain Games for Kids 8yrs – 10yrs These brain games for kids are fun, and they also train memory, concentration, problem-solving and other cognitive skills. Each activity will boost your child’s brainpower by improving language skills, logical thinking, and analytical reasoning.

Youth Tumbling 5yrs – 11yrs Basic to intermediate level skills will be taught in a fun, noncompetitive environment with individualized instruction catered to your child’s abilities. Instructor Renee Embrey has over 30 years of experience with recreational gymnastics. Preregistration required. Junior Mechanical: Let’s Make Toys!

4yrs – 6yrs (no exception can be made for this age range) The Junior Mechanical Engineering Toys classes introduce our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of energy, materials, and movement. Students explore and construct six different toys throughout this unit, including spinners, magical boomerang cans, wind-up whirligigs, and more. Preregistration required. Beginner & Intermediate Horseback Riding All Ages, 6yrs – Adult **NEW LOWER PRICE** Learn the basics of grooming, tacking techniques, general ground manners, care and riding! Study Skills Strategy Course 11yrs - Adult Study Skills is geared to help middle school through adult students learn how to learn more efficiently and effectively. The course can also provide parents with the knowledge they need to help their children develop better study habits. The highly visual and interactive presentations will guide students through 7 blocks of instruction. Pre-registration required. Fright Night in the Burg

Thanksgiving Arts and Craft Night 4yrs – 10yrs Come and make a Thanksgiving Turkey and enjoy a pizza /popcorn party. Games and just plain fun!

Gingerbread House Building 4yrs – 12yrs Join the fun as we sponsor a holiday gingerbread house building workshop. Each child will build their own house and after completion we will enjoy some holiday games and music. Pre-registration required. Family Holiday Tree Trimming 2yrs - Adult Bring the whole family for festive fun as we make ornament and have the family decorate a take-home 3-ft tree. After the hard work we will enjoy some holiday music, hot cocoa and a snack. Pre-registration required.

3yrs – 11yrs Calling all ghastly ghouls, spooky spirits and wicked witches!

Celebrate Halloween with a fun filled carnival and costume contests. Ages 3 to 5 will compete for most original and cutest costume while ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 11 will compete for most original and funniest. A family costume contest will take place and only one will be crowned “Best in the Burg!” Judging will start at 6:15pm so be on time! Pre-registration recommended. Fun in the Sun Art Contest We hope you had an awesome summer and want to know,

“what did you do!?”

Did you go to a summer camp? Did you work? Did you take a super cool vacation with your family? Did you go camping? Did you learn how to swim? Did you watch fireworks?

We want to know! Through your artwork show us “WHAT I DID THIS SUMMER” Please submit your artwork on any type of 8.5 x 11 paper and use pen, pencil, marker, or crayon for your artwork.

Your entry will be judged by Fredericksburg Parks & Recreation staff. Winner’s pictures will be featured on our Facebook page along with the artist’s name and age. Your artwork may be even featured in some of our summer marketing materials in 2016!

Artwork will be judged in the following age groups: 0-5yrs, 6-10yrs, 11-14yrs, 15-18yrs, 19-24yrs All work must be submitted at the Dorothy Hart Community Center by 4pm on Wednesday, September 30. Please include your name, age, and phone number on the back of your artwork.

Children’s Art Classes at Creative Side Studio

Drawing & Painting Students learn basic drawing skills such as composition, proportion, placement and shading and are introduced to dry media including, graphite, chalky pastels, oil pastels and charcoal. Students will also learn how to plan a painting, techniques, color basics and mixing of colors, and light and shadow using water colors and/or acrylics.

Nature Programs Meet a Park All Ages Join us for FREE naturalist led hikes and discover or revisit amazing local gems! See the Rappahannock up close, 100 million-year-old fossils in sandstone cliffs, and some gorgeous fall foliage.

Wee Walkers All Ages Explore the Heritage Trail and meet other parents of little bitties.

Experience nature first-hand as you walk with a naturalist and see what’s on the trail! Each walk will have a surprise for moms and kids to see or touch. The path is paved and ideal for strollers. We’ll begin and end at Kenmore Park so you can play at the park and have a picnic lunch afterward. Sessions consist of four walks. Preregistration required. Backpacking Babies Birth – 2yrs It’s never too early to enjoy the outdoors and begin a love of nature! Strap your baby in a backpack and join a naturalist on a hike through the woods at Mott’s Run. We’ll listen to the birds, hear the wind rustling through the trees, and breathe in the fresh air! Sessions consist of four hikes. Trails are not stroller accessible. Pre-registration required. Homeschool Nature Club for Middle School 11yrs – 15yrs Calling all homeschoolers 6th-8th grades to take a break from the books and join a nature club. We’ll meet one Monday a month from September through December (check the dates).

Wear appropriate outdoor clothing (no flip flops) and bring water. NO non-registered siblings please. Pre-registration required for entire series. Location: Alum Spring Park and Motts Run Reservoir.

Super Seniors Wildcat Club 55+ years Join a naturalist and make a friend while hiking in the outdoors. We’ll hike for an hour on the beautiful trails at Mott’s Run Reservoir and then return to the nature center for a visit, a cup of tea (provided) and a sack lunch (bring your own) Trails are not paved and can be rugged in spots. Fossil Hunt on the Potomac

Adults Ladies…do you feel a little intimidated about getting all of the gear together to take your family camping?

Want to learn to light a fire, cook in the woods, put up a tent, and enjoy the relaxed company of other women? Or, do you already love camping and just want friends to go with? Here’s your chance! Spooky Stories by the Shore

Jr. Naturalists: Trees 10yrs – 16yrs We’ll learn common woodland tree identification; make a plant press and herbarium, learn to use an increment borer and estimate tree age and height, hike to find the largest specimens, play games, and much more! Field notebook and all equipment provided. Participants will earn a patch and after three different courses, get their name on a plaque in the nature center! Pre-registration required.

Woodlands Walk for Wee Ones

Ladies’ Night Out – Westmoreland State Park

10yrs – Adult Join us for a fantastic opportunity to hunt for 10-millionyear-old fossils. Explore the Calvert Formation, an extremely unique area, one of only three in the world. Led by paleontologist Jon Bachman we’ll get the chance to go beyond the restricted area and look for the remains of sharks, porpoises, crocodiles, turtles, rays, whales and more. All participants must sign an insurance waiver and follow safety instructions. Bring lunch, water and dress for the weather.

Wear shoes that can get wet. Pre-registration limited and required.. Location: Stratford Hall Gate.

5yrs – Adult (Everyone pays) Walk the trail of spooks and spiders, to the shore for a roastingfire! Enjoy the enchantment of Halloween as we warm you with hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows, then chill you to the bone with spooky stories and other surprises. Great fun for the entire family, so secure your spot of doom soon! Dress warmly and bring a flashlight and blanket-amphitheatre seating provided.

Nature Programs ASHI Wilderness First Aid

Campout in the Park All Ages Come camp along the shore and enjoy a magical autumn evening complete with a weenie roast and s’mores! Sleep to the sound of night birds and beavers, and wake to the aroma of coffee, sausage, and pancakes! We’ll provide food, fun, and games— you provide your tent and sleeping gear! (Pick up camping list at Community Center.) Pre-registration required; one week notice needed for full refund.

Open to individuals and families—no groups. (Family Fee is for 4, only). No dogs, please. Location: Motts Run Reservoir.

Autumn Leaves Hike 6yrs – Adult From white oaks—the forest’s “fast food station,” to the “dancing leaves” of bigtooth aspen, the fall woodlands are full of wonder. Take an autumn hike and learn about trees and seeds as we soak up the sounds and smells of the season. Dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Great family fun.

14yrs – Adult Wilderness environments create special emergency situations. This 16hour intense course is designed for Boy and Girl scouts/Adventure groups leading outdoor adventures. CPR certification not included (course offered separately). Real-life scenarios will assist us in learning preparation, assessment, prevention and care for injuries and more in this hands-on training by an ASHI (American Safety & Health Institute) instructor. Book and certificate included. Bring a bag lunch. Pre-registration required.

Letterboxing 7yrs – 11yrs Come on over to Motts Run Reservoir for an autumn hike through the woods. Stargazing in the Park 8yrs – Adult Take a peek deep into the night sky with local astronomer, Myron Wasiuta, president of the Rappahannock Astronomy Club. Nature Crafts for Christmas

7yrs – 16yrs Hand-dipped candles, leaf-printed wrapping paper, leather treasures and more! Enjoy this annual tradition in our cozy log cabin. Everyone leaves with a handful of gifts to delight the giver and the receiver. Wear old clothes and a jacket – some activities outside. Kids 9 and under must attend with non-paying adult. Owl Prowl

Log Cabin Storytime

Fascinating Feathers 5yrs – 10yrs Join us at the Mott’s Run Nature Center as we combine art and nature. We’ll learn all about fascinating feathers; see how they are placed on a real Great Horned Owl, do some experiments and do an art project with feathers for you to take home. Celebrate Your Birthday at

4yrs – 6yrs Come on over to our log cabin in the woods, the Nature Center, for some wonderful stories. We’ll sip hot cocoa and do a fun cabin craft to take home.

6yrs-Adult (Everyone pays) “Whoooo cooks for you?” cries the Barred Owl! Come sip hot chocolate, learn about owls and enjoy a winter night hike. There’s no guarantee you’ll hear an owl, but we’re certain to enjoy the magic of the dark winter woods!

Starfires Starfires is an award-winning, continuing and progressive program that your child will love! These classes will perform in local parades, shows, and competitions (but not required). Those who wish to perform or compete in these events will have additional monetary requirements (uniforms and competition fees, etc) in addition to the class fees. Students are always welcome Be sure to have a copy of your birth certificate with you when you register. Pilates for the Beginner to Intermediate Levels Pilates is for all ages, genders and abilities! Most body aches and pains are due to muscular imbalance.

Pilates strengthens the muscles that support the spine (the neck, shoulders, abdominals, hips and thighs); assisting to realign the spine and strengthen the body from the inside out. This class will focus on activating deep muscles while helping tone, streamline and improve your posture through the emphasis on body conditioning, core muscle training, and flexibility. Bus Trips National Museum of the Marine Corps 6yrs - Adult The mission of the National Museum of the Marine Corps is to preserve and exhibit the material history of the U.S. Marine Corps; honor the commitment, accomplishments, and sacrifices of Marines; support recruitment, training, education, and retention of Marines; and provide the public with a readily accessible platform for the exploration of Marine Corps history. Virginia Holocaust Museum 14yrs - Adult Founded to educate the community about the tragedies of the Holocaust, the Virginia Holocaust Museum strives to memorialize and document the atrocities of World War II. Through exhibits, programming, and outreach, the Museum uses the history of genocide to teach the dangers of prejudice and indifference.

Alum Spring Park

Located at the end of Greenbrier Drive.

Discover this hidden treasure within our city limits! This wooded park is equipped with a renovated picnic shelter,picnic tables, restrooms, grills, play equipment, and walking paths.

Alum Spring Park hours vary by season.

Summer Hours: April 1 - October 31 7 am-7 pm Daily.

Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 10 am - 5 pm Daily. For more information on renting the shelter, call the Parks & Recreation office, 372-1086 x 0.

Canal Path

This pathway is 1.8 miles long and winds along the canal from Fall Hill Avenue to Princess Anne Street. Great for walkers and bike riders of all ages. Open all day, year-around.

City Dock

Located at 207 Sophia Street, near the end of the street. This historic dock dates back to George Washington’s day.

Public fishing permitted.

Cobblestone Park

Located at the intersection of Willis Street and Cobblestone Blvd., this ten acre, wooded park features a one mile looped trail and views of Hazel Run. The park is open year round from 6 am to 10 pm daily.

Cossey Botanical Park

(Located at Littlepage St & Grove Ave) The Cossey Botanical Park is a neighborhood park that features winding trails, a small fishing pond, open space, a community garden and botanical garden used for educational sessions sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Extension service. Open 6am – 10pm, year-around.

Dixon Park

Located at 1300 Dixon Street (near Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision). This outdoor facility is 46 acres and features athletic fields, outdoor swimming pool, playground equipment, 1.5 miles of trails, restrooms, and nature preserve areas.

Dixon Park is located on Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision. Open Summer Hours: April 1 - October 31 10 am-8 pm Daily. Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 10 am - 5 pm Daily.

Dixon Park Swimming Pool

Located at 1300 Dixon Street (near Rt. 2 & 17 across from Mayfield subdivision). This outdoor facility is 46 acres and features athletic fields, playground equipment, 1.5 miles of trails, restrooms, and nature preserve areas. The Outdoor Swimming Pool has a great slide, fun water features for the little ones and a zero-depth entry area for easy access. Open May 30 – September 1 – 11:30am – 7pm.

Dorothy Hart Community Center

(Located at 408 Canal St.) The community center is home to many of our classes and programs offered as well as the administrative offices. This facility features three meeting rooms and auditorium. FRED bus also stops at the corner of Canal St & Charles St for easy access.

Fredericksburg Dog Park

Located at 1601 Kenmore Avenue (near Mary Ball St.). This fenced in area available to City residents and their dogs only, is self monitored by its users. City residents who wish to use this facility need to have City dog tags for their pets, which are available at City Hall. Summer Hours: April 1 October 31 6 am-8 pm Daily. Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 7 am - 5 pm Daily.

Hurkamp Park

Located at 500 William Street at the corner of William St & Prince Edward St. or George St. & Prince Edward St. A historic downtown park with a fountain, brick sidewalks, benches and plenty of space for a picnic. Maury Playground

Located at the intersection of William St. and Kenmore Ave. This open play area features a basketball court lit from dusk - 10 pm, year around and playground equipment. The park is open 6am - 10pm Daily.

Memorial Park

Located at 1301 Kenmore Avenue, at the corner of Kenmore Ave. and Mary Ball St. This park is equipped with 6 tennis courts that are lit from dusk - 10 pm, year around. The park also features a tennis practice wall, basketball court, youth play field, children’s play equipment, and a toddler play area. Park hours: 6am 10:30pm Daily.

Motts Run Nature Center

Located at 6600 River Road. Manned by volunteers, the log cabin is open Saturdays and Sundays, April through October. Nature programs held in the center are available at other times during the year. For more information or to volunteer, call 372-1086, ext. 213.

Powhatan Park

Located at 1521 Powhatan Street, at the intersection of Cowan Blvd and Powhatan St. A little less than an acre, this park has a playground, benches and open space.

Old Mill Park

Located at 2410 Caroline St. Our most popular park, Old Mill features soccer fields, picnic shelters, a playground, restrooms and river front views. Summer Hours: April 1 - October 31 8am-8pm Daily. Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 10am-5pm Daily. Old Mill is a perfect rental location for your next event! To reserve the park contact the Parks & Recreation office, 3721086 x 0.

Old Walker-Grant School

Located at 200 Gunnery Road. The facility has open playing fields, basketball court lit from dusk - 10 pm year around & a children’s play area.

Rappahannock River Heritage Trail

The Heritage Trail is a 1.6 mile asphalt stretch that connects the two parts of the Canal Path making a 3.4 mile loop, just about right for a 5K race. The trail, which is 10 feet wide, begins near the intersection of Princess Anne and Ford streets at one end of the Rappahannock Canal.

Beautiful views of the Rappahannock River, Old Mill Park and several historic mills are seen throughout the trail. The river overlook along Riverside Drive should not be missed. Open all day, year round.

Located at 713 Sophia Street on the beautiful Rappahanock River, in the 500-700 blocks of Sophia St. The park is available for events and festivals. Renovations are ongoing. For rental information, please contact the Parks & Recreation office at (540) 372-1086 x 0.

Snowden Baseball Fields

Located on Fall Hill Avenue, Snowden features two baseball diamonds as well as generous parking for sports enthusiasts who are attending practices and games. The park also has an open field area for recreational activities such as field hockey, Frisbee toss and more.

Snowden Park Playground

Located on Fall Hill Avenue, this park has playground equipment and basketball courts. The playground structure is designed for 5 – 12 yr. olds and includes an independent swing set and a small slide for the little tykes. The court is a two bank basketball court.

Plus, there is plenty of open space for other outdoor activities.

Virginia Central Railway Trail

Parks & Facilities

Located at 6600 River Rd. This 860-acre natural area including the 160-acre reservoir, is a haven for fishing, boating, canoeing, hiking, and picnicking. The park has jon boats and canoes available for rental, picnic grills and tables, and over 4 miles of hiking trails. You may bring your own boat (ELECTRIC MOTORS ONLY) to launch on the lake, or fish from the banks. Handicap fishing pier available. Fee charged for fishing and boat launching area. No swimming, horseback riding, biking of any kind, or all-terrain vehicles permitted. Summer Hours: April 1 - October 31 7am - 7pm Daily (weather & water conditions permitting). Winter Hours: Nov 1 – March 30 Closed.

Riverfront Park

This 2.7 mile trail for pedestrians, bicyclists and runners extends from the eastern end of the Cobblestone development off Lafayette Boulevard out Lafayette Boulevard, across the Blue & Gray Parkway, then down Alum Spring Road and behind Alum Spring Park to the Route 1 Bypass. Scenic views of Hazel Run and the historic Virginia Central Railway trail bed are visible throughout the trail. Open all day, year round.

W. L. Harris Playground

Located in the community of Mayfield, this park has a covered shelter, playground equipment, and a lighted basketball court.

• If the department cancels a program or trip, the money will be refunded.

• Classes: Students must cancel 24 hours before the 1st class to be eligible for refund. No refunds will be given after the first class.

• Trips: Registrants who cancel on or before the posted cancellation date shall receive a full refund. After that date, money will be refunded ONLY if the slot is filled by another participant.

• Sports: No refunds will be made after the 1st game.

• Changes to these policies will be posted online and at the Community Center.

Waiting List A wait list will be created when a program has reached its maximum participant capacity. All in-person and mail-in registrants will be put on the waiting list unless otherwise requested. If a space becomes available and a person’s waiting list status changes, you will be contacted by the department. Waiting lists do not roll over from previous, different sessions.

Please plan to register for activities/programs as early as possible. Many activities fill up very quickly.
