The Renovation Planning for the Houghton Hall renovation began in 2014. Occupancy began in phases at the start of Fall 2021. It is the new home of Computer and Information Sciences, Geology and Environmental Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics. It is connected to the Science Center and, therefore, completes the campus? STEM corridor. Houghton Hall is often unrecognized for being one of I.M. Pei and Partners' designs, in part, because the building?s exterior was made up of dark brick, in contrast to his other designs on campus which are largely concrete. Although still brick, the new, lighter, exterior better matches the rest of campus, including the building to which it is attached, the Science Center. In addition to the new look outside, the interior of Houghton has been completely redesigned. The renovated layout now features newly constructed hallways that loop around to create easily navigable ?neighborhoods? for each department. In addition to the reconfiguration, Houghton Hall now features high-tech laboratories with cutting-edge equipment for both teaching and research, conference rooms, and multi-purpose student lounges that encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. One unique feature worth looking for are the transparent display cases found outside of many of the research labs, serving as windows into science. Although the renovation substantially changed the look and feel of the building, much of its original character remains. For example, the concrete beams in the ceiling are still visible with the gaps in between filled with either a light natural wood or acoustical panels. A special thanksisowed to the building shepherdsDr. Holly Lawson, Professor Emeritusof Chemistry, and Dr. Erica Simoson, Associate Professor of Physics. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the needsof the userswere communicated and met. We are also grateful to the other members of the Houghton Planning Committee who helped make the new Houghton a reality. These individuals include Paul Agle, Dr. Andy Karafa, Markus Kessler and Ken Schmitz from Fredonia, Anne Garrity, Derek Guiliano, and Mike Houck from the State University Construction Fund, and Jason Balecha, John Doherty, and Susan Stando from Mitchell Giurgola (Architects).

A special gratitude is owed to all our benefactors who support the Fredonia campus in meaningful ways, such as the naming of spaces in Houghton Hall. Thanks to our donors, we have established new endowment funds in support of our students and programs. Please contact the Fredonia College Foundation if you wish to consider a naming opportunity or other charitable gift. A team member would be happy to assist. Simply call (716) 673-3321.
