It is with pleasure that I share the accomplishments of the faculty who were awarded sabbatical leave during the 2017–2018 academic year.

I am grateful to the faculty featured here for the time and energy they invested outside of the classroom; the scholarship and creative activity that they produced are of great benefit not only to their students, but to Fredonia, and their professional communities.

Creating OER Discourse-based Grammar Units During her sabbatical, Dr. Cole set out to complete two concrete tasks. The first was to transform a current collection of discourse-based grammar activities into a coherent and consistent package. She hoped to convert these individual materials into units. As a result, with additional text and contextualization, the materials could become part of a self-study or could easily be used by other instructors.

Her second task was to draft additional units of these discourse-based grammar activities that could be piloted in courses in the fall semester of 2020. She hoped to review student writing to see what would be the most relevant and helpful within the context of SUNY Fredonia. This inductive approach would further enhance the project’s contribution to the English department and the campus.

Additionally, Dr. Cole expected to further develop her knowledge of and ability to share resources that are Creative Commons (CC) Licensed, which is the standard for open educational resources (OER).

By the end of the sabbatical, she hoped to have revised her current activities into three units and to have drafted three additional units to be piloted. She expected to share them within the Workplace community and submit them for publication, either to WritingCommons.Org, an open source, peer-reviewed site for writing and research, or to another OER repository.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Dr. Cole focused first on a section titled Grammar Boot Camp. During the research phase of her project, she came across a number of recent research studies that advocated for the deliberate development of “metalanguage” in classes. While her boot camp had filled that role, her material revisions focused on a more systematic and focused delivery, included references to metalanguage as a shared vocabulary, and framed the work as bringing to conscious awareness and use information that adult native speakers of a language regularly employ in their speaking.

For the second unit she revised, the Given and New material for information structuring went as planned. Some key features involved finding additional CC-licensed texts to use as examples and in exercises. The third unit Dr. Cole devised a “Comma Triage,” which follows Grammar Boot Camp in her classes, but can stand alone. The unit serves as a way to develop a sense of phrases and clauses before students build them systematically by relying on pattern recognition.

To achieve the second goal of the sabbatical, Dr. Cole reread student final projects and exams to see what areas seemed to be trouble spots even at the end of the semester. One unit covers the topic of descriptive vs prescriptive grammar and language change. This topic has been well-received but not integrated into their long-term understanding, which was problematic, particularly for future teachers and clinicians. Dr. Cole redesigned this unit around the recent NCTE language reform piece, which came out this summer: This Ain’t Another Statement! This is a DEMAND for Black Linguistic Justice! With this non-CC but publicly available document at its center, the unit requires students to engage with the ideas of discourse communities and to challenge their ideas about the neutrality of “school grammar.”

The other two units include one on a concept central to discourse analysis, cohesion.

This unit picks up on strategic use of synonyms, repetition, pronoun use, and thinking about how to core vocabulary in different parts of speech. It also requires students to use conjunctions with intention. The other develops ideas Dr. Cole introduced in the past but hadn’t seen as connected until she had time to reflect and design. Students tend to over-rely on norms of spoken discourse in their writing. In the final unit, they word on concision and precision as bookends to professionalizing their written work. She found some excellent existing OER descriptions and developed examples and exercises that allow her students to see strong models, improve less effective ones, and finally turn their attention to their own work.

Women’s Voices Dr. Farney’s goals for her sabbatical were to: (i) perform a program of "Women's Voices" as part of the Ekstasis Duo; (ii) record a CD and plan for a multi-media show; (iii) investigate music by women for cello and share repertoire through teaching and performing; and (iv) give lectures at Union College and at an international conference.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: For her sabbatical leave, Dr. Farny learned a completely new body of work by women composers, recorded an album, gave lectures, and wrote a paper. Misogyny and neglect in the field of Classical music has been a concern for centuries, and it seemed to be an excellent time to embrace minority artists and composers. This project, called “Women’s Voices,” will expand the cello curriculum at Fredonia and her own future concert programs, as well as inspire colleagues in the Classical music network to program and teach minority voices.

Dr. Farny was asked to give lectures and interviews at Union College, the University of Michigan, and the Sewanee Summer Music Festival. After performing several concerts with duo partner Dr. Eliran Avni of “Women’s Voices'' during the 2019–2020 season, the Ekstasis Duo made a recording in August of seven works composed by women.

She interviewed Pulitzer-prize winning women composers, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Joan Tower, and a young new voice, Alice H. Jones. Her paper on three cello sonatas by women, will be presented at a conference called “Women are not Born to Compose: Female Musical Works from 1750 to 1950.” The conference will take place virtually in November at the Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini in Lucca, Italy.

Dr. Farny spearheaded a program for women in music at the Sewanee Winterfest, held remotely in January 2021. Fruits of her discoveries can be heard at the String Faculty’s ExSTRINGvaganza VII concert, at the Saugerties ProMusica Series, and at the Strings Festival (Steamboat Springs, CO). In addition to this work, Dr. Farny celebrated the release of her debut CD “French Cello Music,” gave a sold-out performance at NYC’s Merkin Hall called “Reves Extatiques,” and performed Tchaikovsky’s cello concerto, “Rococo Variations,” with Glenn Cortese and the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra.

Navigation: Lake Erie - Great Lakes Mr. Frerichs’ first goal was to work on an increased scale of 18” x 24” handmade sheets of paper, building on the Eastern papermaking techniques and research investigated in the Summer Grant. His second goal was to present workshops and a solo exhibition of artwork at Anadulo University and the city of Eskisehir. He was invited by Professor Saime Dönmezer in the Printmaking Fakulty, Department of Art. He planned on sharing his Great Lakes research at this time.

Timothy Frerichs, M.F.A. Professor, Visual Arts & New Media

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Mr. Frerichs’ sabbatical was highly productive in terms of research and professional development. Although impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, he was able to fully invest time and effort into his research. Unfortunately, his workshop, exhibition, and artist talk were postponed at Anadulo University, Eskisehir, Turkey until the pandemic has receded.

The primary emphasis of his sabbatical research focused on creating, researching, and completing his sabbatical proposed project: a body of forty 18” x 24” artworks. In addition Mr. Frerichs completed numerous drawings, several large scale paper-works, photographs, and sculptural pieces investigating the impact that climate change and associated human alterations are having on the Great Lakes. Many of the works created during this period are a vital element of a large installation initiated through a 2019 Global Warming Grant administered through Art Services Initiative: https://www.asiwny.org/global-warming-art-project/ Mr. Frerichs’ resulting work was exhibited in February and March 2021 as a solo exhibition at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland. He has also been communicating with Anadulo University, in Eskisehir, Turkey, where he was to exhibit and do a workshop this past Spring. He was invited to lead an exhibition and workshop at the Vilnius Art Academy in Vilnius, Lithuania in the future.

Health for Musicians through Alexander Technique Students enter college with varying levels of anxiety and stress. Any stress or anxiety leads to physical tension, which, for a musician, can severely inhibit improvement. Alexander Technique offers a tangible set of tools to help manage these issues. This methodology helps students build a skillset they can use throughout their lives, adding to their overall health and mental wellness. Dr. Angela Haas focused her sabbatical research on acquiring skills in the Alexander Technique and researching its application to vocal pedagogy in order to help students become stronger and healthier musicians and performers.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Developed by F. Matthias Alexander, the Alexander Technique is an educational method used by musicians worldwide to enhance practice and performance, prevent injuries and pain, and overcome performance anxiety. For over one hundred years, Alexander Technique has helped musicians learn to practice and play with more ease and less worry, unlocking the possibility for more freedom, clarity, accuracy, resonance, and genuine expression in their playing.

Dr. Haas’ sabbatical activities included private Alexander Technique lessons, intensive workshops, and research. During lessons with Cheryl Pleskow, the chair of the American Society for the Alexander Technique, she worked on finding ease in body movements and efficiency in motion. In addition, Dr. Haas did intensive study with Alexander Technicians Katie Fittipaldi in Rochester, Kathryn Miranda in Syracuse, and Jane Heirich in Michigan.

Both in Syracuse and in Michigan, Dr. Haas participated in AT Teacher Training courses, where she continued her own study while also experiencing working with other students.

The study of Alexander Technique has given Dr. Haas tangible methods to address anxiety, stress, and physical tension in the voice studio. This holistic approach gives students specific ways to focus their energies into more positive, efficient use. Singers are finding more freedom and flexibility in their minds and bodies, allowing them to explore new possibilities in their practice and ultimately, in their performing.

Upon returning to campus, Dr. Haas gave a presentation to her students about Alexander Technique. The benefit of Alexander Technique was immediately evident in the studio. By using specific AT methods of release, one student who had battled severe back, neck, and jaw tension was able to find physical freedom for the first time. As a result, her tone had consistent vibrato throughout her range, which she had not experienced previously.

Another student who was always inclined to press on his tone, causing undue pressure and

inhibiting his natural upper range, finally learned to release his abdominal muscles to allow a true release when he inhales. Allowing more flexibility in his rib cage provides him a freer access to his upper range, improving his tenor quality and allowing consistent timbre and breath management. These are just two examples of how Alexander Technique helps students in the studio.

Health for Musicians through Alexander Technique continued Fall 2020

In this new COVID reality, using Alexander Technique is more challenging, as it is a hands-on method. However, as Alexander Technique is a life-long learning process, Dr. Haas hopes to be able to continue to share these experiences with other faculty and students as the future allows.

Rusty Gardens Dr. Hohle’s first goal was to complete a major research project concerning an eight-year study on the impact of community organizations and community engagement on urban revitalization in the Rust Belt.

Randolph Hohle, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Sociocultural & Justice Sciences

His second goal was to continue to read reports and analyze data in order to develop a follow up to his 2015 book “Race and the Origins of American Neoliberalism” and 2018 book “Racism in the Neoliberal Era: A Meta History of Elite White Power,” both of which examine the impact of race and ethnicity in the adoption of a neoliberal state project across the globe since 1979.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Dr. Hohle’s sabbatical was scheduled for the spring 2020 semester. However, the global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and subsequent global shutdown essentially forced him to change the focus of his sabbatical. Unfortunately, his plans of traveling to New York City to analyze archival data were scrapped because of travel restrictions and the closure of the library. He also had to deal with the process and preparation of becoming the next chair of his department.

Dr. Hohle focused his sabbatical on finishing the transcriptions of his interviews, analyzed said interviews, and wrote two manuscripts for his Rusty Gardens project. One manuscript is currently under review and another is completed but needs to be revised before it is sent out for publication. Because he had to scrap his plans for a follow up project, he instead used part of his sabbatical to begin work on a new book titled “The American Housing Question.”

The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility on Consumer Responses & Marketing Strategies

Lei Huang, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Business Administration

All of Dr. Huang’s sabbatical research activities were built on his corporate social responsibility (CSR) research focuses. His main goals were to research: (i) how different types of CSR lead to different attitudes among consumers, especially after a negative news event (e.g., a fraud or a scandal) about the firm; (ii) how the intended beneficiary of the post-fraud CSR activities influences the consumer’s evaluation of the firm; and (iii) what role the CEO plays on the consumer’s assessment of different CSR activities after a fraud or scandal. A significant amount of time was spent in reviewing the related literature, developing the theoretical framework, designing the studies, collecting and analyzing the data to test the hypotheses.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: The findings of Dr. Huang’s empirical research project not only contributed to the CSR academia and literature but also provided marketers with the implications of using different types of post-fraud CSR in order to help improve the consumer’s general attitudes toward the firm. These sabbatical research activities led to a top tier journal publication, a best paper award by Atlantic Marketing Association, and a conference presentation. More importantly, this project has extended Dr. Huang’s research focus to the application of CSR in food consumption marketing and prepared him for several ongoing research projects in the future.

To improve his students’ learning outcomes as well as prepare them for a more-and-more competitive job market, Dr. Huang revised the curricula of BUAD 340 & 411 by integrating cutting-edge knowledge, skills, and applications as well as his research focuses.

Particularly, for the capstone marketing major course BUAD 411, he developed a semester-long immersive learning project with focus on CSR in the curriculum aiming to provide students with the hands-on approaches to marketing strategies faced by companies daily. In addition, he has enhanced the marketing analytical skills’ training in BUAD 340 by including new topics, assignments, and simulations for the purposes of extending students’ application of these skills to solve marketing problems. With such revisions, these two courses will be newly offered as BUAD 410 (Marketing Research & Analytics) and BUAD 411 (Strategic Marketing Management) in the 2021-22 academic year.

What Do People Deserve?

Dr. Kershnar worked on theories of desert and planned to make at least one professional presentation. His research will be incorporated into his classes and, in particular, into a capstone seminar on the topic.

Stephen Kershnar, Ph.D. Distinguished Teaching Professor, Philosophy

His plan was to argue against the existence of desert, arguing that there is no adequate theory of what desert is. He also planned to argue that there is no plausible basis of what makes people deserve things. Specifically, he hoped to argue that the intuitive notion of desert fits poorly with responsibility-internalism: there is no intuitively plausible basis for positive desert, and the basis for negative desert is not the opposite of that for positive desert. In addition to problems with the basis of desert, he planned to argue that there is no plausible model of how desert and well-being relate to intrinsic value.

Dr. Kershnar read, discussed, and wrote on desert, immigration, sports ranking, and tort law. He will bring what he learned during this semester of research into the classroom and incorporate it into forthcoming public lectures.

Utilization of Sports Psychology Consultants

Bruce Klonsky, Ph.D.

Sabbatical Accomplishments:

Professor, Psychology

Dr. Klonsky took his sabbatical leave during the Spring 2020 semester. In October, he prepared and presented findings on the utilization of sport psychology consultants in Major League Soccer and in the English Premier League with Dr. Kornspan (University of Akron) and Joe Carbone (Springfield College). He worked with those colleagues on follow-ups to related research on professional basketball, major league baseball, professional hockey, and professional football. After those follow-ups are completed, they will submit integrative manuscripts on the utilization of sport psychology consultants.

Dr. Klonsky also published a short story, titled Mother’s Ascendance. This short story will be incorporated into his Social Development course.

It should also be noted that Dr. Klonsky prepared an interdisciplinary sport and exercise psychology minor. His previous major in that area was ranked #2 in the nation by Careers in Psychology.com and was listed in the Directory of Graduate (and Undergraduate) Programs in Applied Sport Psychology.

Study of Law to Enhance Research and Teaching Dr. Lillie’s entire career has focused on serving those who are considered vulnerable, those who have had their voices silenced or repressed, and those who face hurdles in their struggle for equity. Her research agenda addressed justice and equity, particularly in relation to legal settings, laws, and policies dealing with the education and treatment of children. Another aspect of her research involved the criminal justice system, via forensic linguistics. Dr. Lillie focused on examining the structural, systemic racism that is keeping people of color, particularly those for whom English was not their primary language, from being able to participate fully in society. Ultimately, the purpose of her sabbatical was to increase her fundamental knowledge of law, as well as to become more qualified as an authority about such topics so as to enhance her research agenda and bring more to her classroom teaching.

Karen Lillie, Ph.D. , Associate Professor, Education

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Throughout the year, Dr. Lillie took some courses at the University of Buffalo School of Law. One of these courses was Constitutional Law, which led Dr. Lillie to pursue research into two areas: language rights in relation to indigenous groups and language as a right under the 14th Amendment. As a result of this research, Dr. Lillie is now working on a manuscript for a potential publication looking at federal laws concerning indigenous language rights in contrast to agency administrative power over teacher certifications in New York State. Dr. Lillie is now able to share this knowledge with SUNY Fredonia TESOL teacher candidates, especially the educational rights their future English-learning public school students have. She was also able to study criminal law, which has assisted in her ability to examine and better understand criminal cases. This knowledge is useful in parsing out actual law from wrongful applications of law against those who speak a first language other than English. This knowledge also helped in Dr. Lillie’s overall research looking at where in our criminal justice system weaknesses exist in relation to people learning English as an additional language.

Related service during the sabbatical year led to scholarly activity and writing. Dr. Lillie was the chair for the colloquium “Indigenous Language Teacher Certification and the Intersection with Language Policy” at the Multidisciplinary Approaches to Language Policy & Planning Conference in Toronto, Canada. The title of her paper was “Certification Policy Acting as Arbiter for New Language Policy Creation.” The panel shared evidence of and spoke to what is happening at each stage of the intersection between current language policies and ideologies held by policy arbiters and government stakeholders. Dr. Lillie volunteered at the Legal Aid of Buffalo and assisted on a human rights case wherein she

authored a legal brief for the Fourth Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York.

That volunteer work led to the current writing of a paper examining the U.S. court’s allowance of waiving of fundamental rights and the impossibility of such allowance when examined through the lens of international human rights law. Dr. Lillie also conducted research on the ethical implications for the legal profession working with English language learners. She presented a paper entitled “Language Learners in Court: Ethical and Professional Issues for Lawyers & Courts” and is now working on that as a manuscript to be considered for publication. Finished in the Spring of 2020, Dr. Lillie is second author on a manuscript entitled “Castañeda’s Third Prong Redux: The Achievement of Arizona’s English Language Learners after Proposition 203 (2002-2013).” The paper was submitted to the International Journal of Bilingual Education & Bilingualism and is currently still under review. Additionally, Dr. Lillie assumed a role on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Language, Identity, and Education after stepping down from her position as Associate Editor. This was in addition to her reviewing while on sabbatical for other high-impact journals, including Educational Policy and the International Multilingual Research Journal, as well as reviewing a book manuscript (Language and Online Identities: The Undercover Policing of Internet Sexual Crime) for Cambridge University Press, which has subsequently been published.

Study of Law to Enhance Research and Teaching continued Spring 2019 - Fall 2020

Enhancing Applied Learning for Underserved Students through Authentic, Intensive Summer Research Experiences and OER Tutorials

Joseph McFall, Ph.D. , Associate Professor, Psychology

Dr. McFall’s vision was to build an infrastructure and culture at Fredonia of participating in a psychology research lab throughout all years of the undergraduate career. Retention research shows that being part of an active research group starting in the first year of college increases 1st-2nd year retention, as well as 4 & 5-yr graduation rates. Students from backgrounds underrepresented in science tend to be especially at risk of poor retention during the first-second year of college. Research programs that build rapport between students, lab mates, and faculty during the summer before or after the first year are extraordinarily successful in increasing positive retention outcomes.

One of the barriers for students to participate in such programs is mindset; many students are concerned that they lack the needed skills to excel in research. Therefore, Dr. McFall was interested in developing open resources that students could use on a self-paced tutorial basis to become trained and feel prepared to succeed in the program.

During his sabbatical, Dr. McFall planned to: (i) communicate with directors of existing intensive summer research programs within SUNY; (ii) refine a model for Fredonia based on these exemplars; (iii) explore funding opportunities to sustain such a program; and (iv) build an infrastructure for curating OER in statistics and research methodology training that can aid students in feeling prepared to succeed.

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Dr. McFall obtained program documentation for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program (SURF) at SUNY Upstate. In addition, he attended the final presentations for the Bridges Summer Program at SUNY Purchase College and interviewed the Bridges program director.

With the COVID-19 crisis, a pilot program for Summer 2020 became untenable; however, Dr. McFall was able to review the program plan to identify a fully online alternative that could be implemented for 2021, should an in-person pilot not be possible.

Dr. McFall developed a working paper outlining several funding mechanisms for summer research programs, including funding programs within agencies such as NSF and NIH. Many funding announcements are relevant to summer research programs to support

underrepresented students in STEM fields. His next goal is to identify funding sources outside of STEM to bring the arts and humanities into the program.

Dr. McFall traveled to Pacific Lutheran University as a Visiting Scholar in November 2019.

He served as an expert in multilevel data modeling and held two workshops for faculty and students across the university, but primarily those within the research collaborative on emerging adulthood. He met with students and faculty in one-on-one working meetings and also worked on the infrastructure for the OER tutorials in data analysis, statics, and research design and methodology.

After the sabbatical trip, Dr. McFall worked with fellow EAMMI2 collaborators and partners interested in developing teaching resources with the EAMMI2 teaching dataset.

They have a sandbox for module development and a web system infrastructure for public use of the modules. Module development has been primarily focused on data analysis and statistics content, as well as tutorials for using free software.

Utilization of Sports Psychology Consultants Dr. Min’s four primary objectives for sabbatical leave were to: (i) conduct foundational research in partnership with other university professors on the globalization of sport in South Korea (or Asia); (ii) develop his current research for publication; (iii) revise and re-design courses focusing on cutting-edge industry trends including recent changes/challenges in the discipline of sport management; and (iv) develop suitable project topics for engaging sport management students in undergraduate research.

Sungick Min, Ph.D. , Associate Professor, Sport Management

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Dr. Min began working on the effect of participation in a Taekwondo family class on quality of family life. The purpose of this study was to identify the benefits of participation in a Taekwondo family class and its effect on quality of family life, specifically family functioning and family communication. Additionally, he was able to draft a research paper studying “Athletes’ Emotion and Self-Confidence under Sport Injury Rehabilitation with Sports Counseling”. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sports counseling on athletes’ emotion and self-confidence under sport injury rehabilitation.

Twenty-four South Korean baseball players diagnosed with sport injuries were selected and randomly assigned into a treatment-as-usual (TAU) control, sport psychology skills training (PST) experimental group, or PST plus sports counseling (SC) experimental group.

Results suggest that when athletes under sport injury rehabilitation are provided with sports counseling as well as sport psychology skills training, they feel more emotionally supported and have enhanced self-confidence.

Dr. Min was invited to submit his article "Sport Participation and U.S. Sport Culture Influences among College-Age International Students" as one of the chapters in Cambridge Publishing’s “Advances and Lessons in Sports.”

Career opportunities in this field are growing exponentially, which led to the development of an International Sport Management course. Elements of international sport management change so rapidly that there are no satisfactory and up-to-date textbooks/materials. Dr. Min’s sabbatical gave him time to review large amounts of information being generated about international sport management.

From January through March 2020, Dr. Min traveled to Singapore and was invited to be a guest speaker at the Nanyang Technological University. He gave a lecture on international sport marketing. Moreover, he virtually taught Japanese students about developing a sport marketing plan and gave an intensive class to European students.

Water and Climate Economics Research Dr. Reinelt’s main goal was to reinvigorate his research program after six years of significant time commitments as Department chair and six years undertaking considerable efforts to help the campus community understand University budget issues as member and co-chair (3 years) of University Senate Planning and Budget Advisory Committee. Dr. Reinhart’s specific goals for the first half year were to submit and publish a journal article on the economics of seawater intrusion and re-engage in a research project on modeling human decisions.

Peter Reinelt, Ph.D. Professor, Economics

Sabbatical Accomplishments: For his first project, Dr. Reinelt researched the broader literature on spatial-dynamic externalities in the economic management of groundwater. The resulting article was published in Resource and Energy Economics, one of the top ranked journals in the field of environmental and resource economics. The paper makes a methodological contribution by developing an alternative integral solution to the diffusion equation, providing insight into the spatial-dynamic externality structure between agents, which may be applicable to other spatial-dynamic diffusion class problems in resource and environmental economics.

Dr. Reinelt’s second project focused on intertemporal risk from uncertainty correlated in time. This project was motivated by the understanding that risk is understated in climatic change policy analysis and thus greater action is optimal than in current models. He re-engaged with this research agenda using uninterrupted research time that had not been available as department chair. He expanded on his earlier literature research, reading more than thirty additional papers and books, while investigating potential solution strategies and ideas.

For the second half of my sabbatical, Dr. Reinelt obtained a Visiting Research Scholar position in the Economics and Business Faculty of the Universidad del Desarrollo in Concepcion, Chile for their Fall 2020 Semester. He was planning to work on Chilean water economic issues and institutions with Dr. Felipe Vasquez Lavin. Unfortunately, the project was interrupted when the Coronavirus pandemic closed the campus two weeks into their Fall Semester. As in the U.S., this prompted the university to shift classes online, diverting all of Dr. Vasquez’s time to be devoted to the project. Dr. Reinelt stayed in Concepcion for another four months, but the schools never reopened and, as a result, he returned to the U.S. one month early.

While in Concepcion, Dr. Reinelt returned to his intertemporal risk line of research. This line of research led to identifying relevant distinctions between primitive preferences over uncertain consumption streams and induced preferences over uncertain income streams for uncertainty correlated across time, and the timing of uncertainty resolution. More than 50 years after Von-Neumann Morgenstern proposed expected utility theory in a static context to model behavior under risk, a consensus on a dynamic theory of risk has not been reached. As he approached this problem from a correlated intertemporal uncertainty perspective, his solutions collided with this gap in the standard theory. This led to a crossroads in his research. Dr. Reinelt plans to pursue this broader, more challenging, and more important if successful, agenda.

Main Street Studios Renovation Mr. Sharon’s sabbatical goals were to: (i) renovate the vacant warehouse at 50 West Main Street, Fredonia; (ii) work with the Village of Fredonia and NYS Homes and Community Renewal; (iii) self-fund to match incremental reimbursements from NYS directed toward complete electrical, plumbing, HVAC, renovation construction, elevator installation and paint; and (iv) create W-2 and W-9 based jobs through pubic performing and visual art events, public gatherings, and cafe sales.

Ted Sharon, M.F.A. Professor, Theatre & Dance

Sabbatical Accomplishments: Mr. Sharon’s sabbatical project involved the completion of extensive interior and exterior renovations to 50 West Main Street to create an entertainment hub featuring spaces for theater, film, music, dance, and cultural arts. These renovations greatly enhanced the aesthetics of Historic Downtown Fredonia as well as accessibility for persons with disabilities. Renovations transformed the former warehouse facility into a basement cafe and lobby with public restrooms, first floor multi-use space, and second floor classroom space.

The project will yield year-round community events, increased tourism, and entrepreneurship. Likewise, it will foster business development, promote economic activity, and stimulate the revitalization of Downtown Fredonia. It was given priority in the Village’s 2017 proposal to the Downtown Revitalization Initiative/WNY Smart Growth Community Fund; aligns directly with target goals in the WNY REDC Strategic Opportunity Plan; and supports the “Central Connections” Initiative, an active collaboration between the VIllage of Fredonia, City of Dunkirk, and SUNY Fredonia to build new excitement among residents, increase private-sector investment, build a lasting partnership between Dunkirk and Fredonia, and raise awareness of the unique assets that both communities have to offer visitors.

While Mr. Sharon purchased the entire building, this project was focused on the rear of the building, the former storage warehouse of the Fredonia Card Seed Company. Vacant and underutilized for several decades, this project transformed a long-standing eyesore in downtown Fredonia into an arts, music, and community gathering hub with tremendous economic impact to the village.
