About Our Guest Speakers

Reginal Spiller, a graduate of the SUNY Fredonia Class of 1974 with a major in Special Studies and emphasis in Geology, is an international energy expert who has successfully worked and invested in over 60 countries. He has taken two petroleum companies public on the U.S. and London Exchanges and brought major investment to projects in the U.S., Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Currently, Mr. Spiller is President and CEO of Azimuth Energy LLC, and CEO of subsidiary Azimuth GIS-E. He is also former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Gas and Petroleum Technologies at the U.S. Department of Energy, and was the first petroleum geologist named to that position, where he managed a $400 million research and development budget. While at the Department of Energy, he was the co-founder of the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship, a minority and women-focused STEM program which has placed over 1,000 students into national lab internships. In addition, Mr. Spiller is Chief Scientist for the SAMEC mining company, which is engaged in bauxite and REE development in Guinea Conakry in West Africa, and previously was COO for Allied Energy, where he managed the company’s deep-water Nigeria production and development.

Mr. Spiller earned his Master of Science degree in Geology from Penn State University and has received its Distinguished Alumni Award. He is a 40-year founding member of the National Association of Black Geoscientists, and a board member of both the U.S. publicly-traded Range Resources Corp. and African Energy Chamber. He is also a board member of the Washington State-based Innovative Theater Arts, a nonprofit that is promoting composer and playwright Milton Williams and his multimedia theatre work, “A Bridge to the Promised Land 1968.”

As a highlight of his visit to Fredonia to accept the Fredonia Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award in October 2023 at Homecoming and to celebrate the Department of Geology’s 60th anniversary, Mr. Spiller offered two talks to current students. With a group of devoted geology alumni, he has worked to raise scholarship funds to benefit the next generation of Fredonians.

SUNY Fredonia alumnus Tim Zulawski assumed the role of President of AMB Sports and Entertainment (AMBSE) in 2023. Mr. Zulawski has served Arthur Blank’s family of businesses for over two decades. During his tenure, Mr. Zulawski has served in several pivotal roles in driving value for the organization including chief revenue officer. Under Mr. Zulawski’ s leadership, the sales and service teams moved the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United into elite company in the NFL and MLS in sponsorship sales, ticket revenue and other local revenue streams.

A Sports Business Journal Forty Under 40 honoree in 2016, Mr. Zulawski started his career in sports as an intern for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills while still in high school. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Fredonia in 1998 and a master’s degree from Springfield College in 2000. Mr. Zulawski began his career in sponsorship sales for the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning in 2001 before joining the Falcons in a similar role in 2003. Progressively promoted in the sponsorship and sales space, Mr. Zulawski became chief commercial officer of the Falcons in 2014 where he spearheaded the naming rights for Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) and remained on point for landing 11 Founding Partners and 19 other sponsors prior to opening of MBS. He led the development of stadium premium spaces, ticketing, sponsorships, and the launch of both MBS and Atlanta United.

Mr. Zulawski has led critical efforts that have made Mercedes-Benz Stadium one of the busiest venues of its kind in the world, hosting 50-plus major public events and over 150 private events annually. Mr. Zulawski has played a central role in landing major events for MBS, including the 2018 and 2025 College Football Championships; 2018 MLS All-Star Game; 2019 Super Bowl; and TBD events for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mr. Zulawski has served as a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor; raised funds for Covenant House; and serves as a youth flag football coach. Mr. Zulawski and his wife, Erika, are the parents of Aleksander and Mila, and reside in metro Atlanta, GA.

Latin Honors Graduates

Undergraduate students who have attained high scholastic achievement are eligible to graduate with Latin honors, which are indicated to the right of the student’s major. Students graduating Cum Laude (C) have a final cumulative quality point average of 3.30 to 3.49; Magna Cum Laude (M), 3.50 through 3.69; and Summa Cum Laude (S), 3.70 or higher. For students graduating in May, August and December of this year, a preliminary determination was made considering the student’s most recent QPA. A final determination is made following the degree audit and is reflected on the student’s diploma. Through a gift from the Fredonia Alumni Association, Latin honors undergraduates wear a symbolic gold cord with their academic gown.

HONORS IN LIBERAL EDUCATION

Graduates completing the Fredonia Honors Program met rigorous selection standards, whether as entering first-year students, transfer students, or existing students applying into the program after arriving on campus. Students who entered the program before Fall 2019 completed a sequence of four interdisciplinary Honors seminars in general education. Students who entered the program starting in Fall 2019 completed a tiered curriculum composed of Honors-only sections of Fredonia Foundations courses, as well as upperlevel Honors seminars.

The Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment of the Fredonia College Foundation is presented at this year’s Commencement to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated balanced achievement. Criteria for selection include a high degree of personal honesty and integrity, substantial intellectual growth and achievement during university years, a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and exemplary service to Fredonia, including active participation in more than one area of university life.

Patience Glatt

18

Commencement Traditions

The Fredonia Commencement you are part of today incorporates traditions dating back to the earliest universities in the 12th century.

The Mace

During the processional, note the mace carried by the mace bearer and the batons by the marshals. The mace, by ancient tradition representing the power of office, symbolizes the authority of the President of the university. Dedicated to the late Mary H. Cranston, former faculty member and Dean of Women, and the late Anna B. Haskin, a lifelong friend of the university, the mace for Fredonia was presented by the Fredonia Alumni Association to the university in 1972. Assisting the alumni association with the creation of the mace was the late Helen (Clees) McKee, ’40, ’62.

Batons, dedicated to the late Robert W. Kasling, a science faculty member from 1946 to 1966, are carried by the Faculty Marshals to represent the direction and leadership of the faculty.

The Academic Costume

Academic regalia derives directly from the caps, gowns, and hoods worn during the Middle Ages for protection against weather and unheated lecture halls. You can distinguish the three ranks (bachelor, master, doctor) by the styling. The bachelor's gown, which is designed to be worn closed, has pointed sleeves. The master's has an oblong sleeve with notched slits, through which the arms are passed. The gown may be worn either open or closed. The doctor's gown has distinct, bell - shaped sleeves, may be worn open or closed, and is easily distinguished by the three velvet bars on the sleeves.

Usually the gowns are black, although there may be decorative front panels and sleeve bars on the doctoral gowns, representing the subject specialty.

It is the hood that indicates by the color of its lining which college or university granted the degree, and by the color of the border in which academic field the degree was earned. Some of the general categories are:

White for Arts, Letters and Humanities

Brown for Fine Arts

Copper for Economics

Drab for Business

Light Blue for Education

Pink for Music

Dark Blue for Philosophy

Golden Yellow for Science

The cap and mortarboard are worn with one corner facing forward. The tassel may also represent the academic subject by its color, although doctors may choose the option of metallic gold. A recent tradition has the undergraduate candidates wearing their tassels to the right, moving them to the left only after the degree has been conferred.

19

Class of 2024 Senior Challenge

Each year the graduating class, as its gift to Fredonia, conducts the Senior Challenge. Graduates donate a set amount representing their class year, this year it was $20.24. Gifts were also made by families of the graduates in their honor through the Fredonia College Foundation. Funds are earmarked by the class for a scholarship.

My

Companion

You are my companion

Down the silver road, Still and many-changing, Infinitely changing. You are my companion. Something sings in lives — Days of walking on and on, Deep beyond all singing, Wonderful past singing.

Wonderful our road, Long and many-changing, Infinitely changing. This, more wonderful — We are here together, You and I together, I am your companion; You are my companion, My own, true companion.

Let the road-side fade: Morning on the mountain-top, Hours along the valley, Days of walking on and on, Pulse away in silence, In eternal silence. Let the world all fade, Break and pass away. Yet will this remain, Deep beyond all singing, My own true companion, Beautiful past singing: We were here together — On this earth together; I was your companion, You were my companion.

Diploma covers are a gift from the Office of the Registrar and the Commencement Committee. The Commencement program was created by Graphic Designer/Photographer Lori Deemer.

Our sign language interpreter for Commencement is Janelle Krueger. Our official card Readers are Vice Provost Judith M. Horowitz and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Senior Assistant Dean Todd Proffitt.

The voice you hear on the emergency egress message is Professor Emeritus Dan Berggren of the Department of Communication.

Additional financial support for Commencement activities is provided by the Faculty Student Association and the Fredonia Alumni Association. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the members of the Commencement Committee, whose efforts have led to the success of today’s ceremonies.

Emergency Egress from Steele Hall Basketball/Track Arena

The emergency exits are located in the lower level of the venue on either side of the stage. Exits are also located on both sides of the lower level in the rear of the venue. These exits should be used by guests seated on the floor and lower bleacher level. Persons sitting in the upper bleachers and balcony should exit through the doors leading into the upper level hallway, turn left through the atrium adjacent to the swimming pool and exit the building through the outer door.

Regardless of which exit you use, please move away from the building, across the street or parking lot, to allow first responders to enter the building. Please do not use the elevator during an emergency evacuation. Ushers are here to assist persons in exiting the building.

Due to fire and safety requirements, there is no standing room on the balcony. The limited seating on the balcony is reserved for Special Needs guests.

There are medical services available during the ceremony. These can be found off the lower level of Steele Hall. Please contact an Usher or University Police Officer if you need assistance.

Please follow fire requirements which prohibit smoking in this building.
