Celebrating Two Centuries of Impact

Celebrating Two Centuries of Impact For 200 years, Fredonia has had a rich tradition of teaching and learning. Its history began with the establishment of the Fredonia Academy in 1826 by the citizens of Fredonia. Today, SUNY Fredonia, with its colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Education, Health Sciences and Human Services, along with schools of Music, Theatre and Dance, and Business, has over 3,000 students in nationally recognized undergraduate and graduate programs. Student life nurtures as well as challenges the next generation of leaders. Fredonia's faculty and staff demonstrate a commitment to providing quality education to students. Accessibility to faculty creates an open atmosphere, and small class sizes reflect the university's dedication to excellence. As we gather to mark this extraordinary Bicentennial milestone, we honor the legacy that brought us here while looking ahead to the opportunities that are before us. This convocation celebrates two centuries of impact and invites us to reflect on how our shared commitment to education, innovation, and service will continue to shape the next chapter of our story.

Chris Bashinelli, also known as, ?Bash,? was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. After a decade long acting career including an appearance on the HBO hit television series The Sopranos, Bash decided to follow his real passion. He now traverses the globe from Uganda to Haiti, as host of Bridge the Gap on PBS and the National Geographic Channel.

Today's Talk The Power of Human Connection: Renew Inspiration and Bring Our Best Selves Everyday In this captivating keynote presentation, National Geographic Explorer Chris Bashinelli takes us on an international adventure ? from the grasslands of Mongolia to the Badlands of the Pine Ridge ? as we journey towards our potential. Human connection is one of the most powerful vehicles on the path to mental wellness. ?Bash? will share how his life was forever changed after a study abroad program through SUNY. ?SUNY changed my life! Were it not for my experience with SUNY, I know almost for certain that I would not be a National Geographic Explorer, I would not have had the good fortune to travel the world learning from people from all walks of life, and I would not have met my mentor, Dr. Jane Goodall. Thank you, SUNY, for changing my life!"

Participating Musical Ensembles SUNY Fredonia African Drumming Ensemble The Fredonia African Drumming Ensemble was founded in the fall of 1994 by SUNY Distinguished Professor Kay Stonefelt, as a result of a Fulbright Senior Scholar research grant to Ghana, West Africa in 1993?94. By 1995, along with dance Professor Carol Prevet, a collaboration was established between the African Drumming Ensemble and the Dance Department. To further infuse the energy of the collaboration, Prevet and Stonefelt applied for, and were granted, a Fulbright resident scholar from Ghana. Master Drummer of the Ghana Dance Ensemble, Francis Kofi, was in residence for an entire year, teaching regularly scheduled classes in dance and drumming. In the meantime, Stonefelt continued her gyil (a xylophone indigenous to the Dagara people in Upper West Region, Ghana) studies with Master Musician of the Ghana Dance Ensemble, Bernard Woma. Thanks to SUNY Fredonia Human Resources Director Bernard Gerling, the university was were able to maintain international Exceptional Artist visas for Woma. Woma was also a designated Master Drummer by the Ghana Dance Ensemble. In between trips to Fredonia, while at home in Ghana, he was the welcoming drummer for many international guests, including President Bill Clinton and later, the Obama family. With full support and mentorship from Peter Schoenbach, director of the School of Music; Paul Schwartz, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities; and President Dennis Hefner, Woma became a full time undergraduate student at Fredonia, all the while teaching his African Drumming classes and fulfilling his professional performance obligations in or with such prestigious organizations as Carnegie Hall, the NY Philharmonic, Berlin (Germany) Philharmonic, etc. As Woma's performance career was ramping up, he was completing his B.A. degree, and moving on to graduate work at Indiana University, it was time for Fredonia to welcome Dr. Tiffany Nicely, a member of the Fredonia percussion faculty, as the Instructor of the African Drumming ensembles. Nicely established the Fredonia, ?Ghana Study Abroad? program, leading several student trips to Ghana and the Dagara Music Center in Medie. Her Ph.D. theoretical studies centered around the cultures of Guinea and Mali, including in-depth djembe studies with M'Bemba Bangoura and balafon (xylophone) with N?Camara Abou Sylla, both from Guinea. Nicely?s contributions provide a deeper understanding of music in cultural and theoretical context. Today?s celebration is witness to our respect for each of the cultures represented and a commitment to quality of performance. The Procession will be led by Fredonia alumni Matthew Aubeuf (2013) and Jamie Sunshine (2013), each with immersive studies and performance experience in today?s styles. They are assisted by current students of the African Drumming Classes, prepared in three weeks?time by Sunshine and Hannah Vanderbilt (Mus.B. 2022; M.M. 2024), our current Instructor of the African Drumming classes.

The Fredonia Chamber Choir Under the direction of Dr. Vernon Huff, the Chamber Choir represents a distinguished chapter in Fredonia's rich choral tradition. Through its commitment to expressive performance, the ensemble has brought together generations of student musicians in a shared pursuit of excellence. Its repertoire and performance reflect the School of Music belief in the transformational power of music. As Fredonia celebrates two centuries of impact, the legacy of the Fredonia Chamber Choir stands as a testament to the many voices that have enriched Fredonia's musical life.

SUNY Fredonia Faculty Brass Quartet The Fredonia Faculty Brass Quartet continues a distinguished tradition of chamber music that has long been a part of the School of Music for decades. Fredonia's faculty musicians have brought the artistry, precision, and collaborative spirit of professional chamber music to Fredonia. Today's quartet carries that tradition forward through performances that connect generations of musicians, students, and audiences. As Fredonia celebrates its Bicentennial the ensemble embodies the enduring role of music in Fredonia's history.

Student Jazz Performance For generations, jazz at Fredonia has provided students with a setting in which to develop artistry and creativity. Their performance reflects the vitality of Fredonia's School of Music and its commitment to preparing musicians who are not only accomplished performers, but also creative leaders.
