DIRECTOR’S NOTE Cabaret has always spoken to its time. When director Hal Prince began rehearsals for the original production of Cabaret in 1966, he showed the cast a picture of angry white nationalists protesting school integration. Though the show is about the rise of the Nazis in prewar World War II Berlin, he was interested in pointing out parallels with their current world. It’s not a coincidence that the initials for the Kit Kat Klub are KKK. While sixty years have passed, the current picture I showed on our first day of rehearsals shares a fundamental warning
about allowing hate and fear to flourish, overwhelming everyday people and making them afraid to speak out against rising tides of despotism. In the second act, Fraulein Schneider, fearful of going against the Nazis, asks Sally and Cliff, and by extension the audience, “What Would You Do?” We hope this production does justice to the searing themes of Cabaret and prompts us all to ask ourselves this ever more urgent question. Perhaps then we can hope for a future day where Cabaret will not resonate so urgently with our times. — Jessica Hillman-McCord

DRAMATURG’S NOTE “The political moral is certainly depressing; these people could be made to believe in anybody or anything.” (Isherwood, Goodbye to Berlin) What breeds radical thought? What forces create the path for mass submission? There is often a sense of disbelief when we discuss the Nazi regime, confusion about how suddenly a nation can succumb to a heinous political force. Descent into fascism, as seen in Cabaret, is not sudden, but rather a path we can trace by looking at the events occurring before the show takes place. A disheartened German people overthrew the German monarchy in 1918. This revolution was based on concerns surrounding food insecurity and the Great War, which many Germans found pointless. In January of 1920, Germany was found responsible for WWI. The young Weimar Republic was supposed to pay 132 billion gold marks (32 billion US dollars) in reparations to the Allied powers. Without having a chance to financially recover from the war, hyperinflation occurred in Germany. German currency lost all its worth. At it’s worst, in 1923, 4.2 trillion German marks were equivalent to 1 US dollar. Hitler attempted a coup during
this year, but was unsuccessful. He was arrested and spent 5 months in prison, where he wrote Mein Kampf. The Nazi Party was one of several political parties in the Weimar Republic; it was not initially a dominating force. While the government was able to remedy hyperinflation, the damage led to high poverty rates and a distrust in the Weimar government. The existence of several political parties in Germany illustrates how fragmented the nation’s identity had become. Isolation from other nations and a lack of political and economic stability left the German population longing for an identity. Berlin provided a hub for those looking to belong. There was a very vibrant nightclub scene during this era, which provided a community for the LGBTQ+ population. Berlin was a city of art and culture and a great place to escape the troubles of the Weimar Republic. Others found a sense of identity in exclusionary nationalism; deciding who is and isn’t German was a way to elevate one’s sense of belonging and control in a chaotic time. —Tali Kam
