LUCAS WEST Rochester, NY-based vocalist, instrumentalist, and songwriter Lucas West is thought by many to be a strong force of the next generation of popular music.

DR. NICK WEISER Dr. Nick Weiser is that most rare combination - a musician’s musician, and a musical ambassador to the masses. A communicative artist skilled not only as a pianist, conductor, and bandleader, but as a composer, arranger, educator, and scholar, Weiser has performed to acclaim as a soloist and collaborator in numerous idioms. Diligence, curiosity, and love of music led him from his tiny hometown of Dighton, Kansas first to the University of Kansas, and then on to the Eastman School of Music, where he earned his M.M. and D.M.A. in the Department of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media under the tutelage and mentorship of Harold Danko and Bill Dobbins, among others.

A passionate and dedicated educator, Weiser has been the architect and director of the Jazz Studies curriculum at the State University of New York at Fredonia since the program began in 2017. Among his duties at SUNY Fredonia, Weiser is proud to conduct two stellar big bands, the Fredonia Jazz Orchestra and the DownBeat award-winning New Jazz

In the greater Fredonia community, Weiser serves as artistic director of the Fredonia Jazz Society, which he co-founded, performing regularly and facilitating concerts sponsored by the organization. Prior to coming to Fredonia, Weiser taught at Ithaca College from 2011 to 2017 and at Cornell University from 2013 to 2017, and has maintained a private teaching studio for many years.

KIERAN J. HANLON Kieran J. Hanlon is Associate Professor of Double Bass and Jazz at The State University of New York at Fredonia. In addition to his teaching, Kieran is a first call performer in both the classical and jazz idioms, and enjoys a diverse performing career in both genres (among others). Kieran performs on both acoustic and electric basses.

In May 2014, Kieran completed a Master of Music Degree in Double Bass Performance at the Eastman School of Music with Professor of Double Bass James VanDemark. He also completed Eastman’s Orchestral Studies Program, in which he worked as a playing intern for two seasons with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Kieran’s undergraduate studies were completed at The University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance in April of 2012, where he studied classical repertoire with Professors Diana Gannett and Stephen Molina and jazz

with Professor Robert Hurst.

He holds a B.M. in Double Bass Performance and a B.F.A. in Jazz Studies, Bass from Michigan.

He also won third place in the Orchestral Competition at the International Society of Bassists 2013 Convention in Rochester.

KIERAN J. HANLON Jacobs School of Music, The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, Duquesne University, The Eastman School of Music, The University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University among numerous K-12 schools across New York State and Pennsylvania.

An active orchestral performer, Kieran is Principal Bass of the Erie Philharmonic, Section Bassist in the Chautauqua Symphony, and works as a substitute double bassist with the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and the Rochester Philharmonic. He has toured to Carnegie Hall with the Buffalo Philharmonic, and recorded Reinhold Gliere’s Symphony No. 3 “Il’ya Muromets” with the orchestra for the Naxos label.

In addition to frequent engagements as a freelance classical musician in upstate New York, Kieran is a first call jazz performer in the area, and is the bassist for the Buffalo Philharmonic Big Band. He has also worked with

Celtic artist Cathie Ryan, who performs traditional Irish music with professional symphony orchestras.

On campus at Fredonia, Kieran is committed to bringing in and performing with high-profile guest artists. Of particular note in the jazz idiom were Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton, former Chuck Mangione guitarist and Eastman Professor Bob Sneider, former Jay Leno band guitarist and major LA recording artist Tom Rizzo, Dave Brubeck Quartet saxophonist Bobby Militello, pianist Tony Caramia, and well-known Cleveland based saxophonist and educator Ernie Krivda.

Kieran plays a 2005 Michael Griffin Orchestral Model acoustic bass for classical music, a 2002 Christopher for jazz, and Yamaha electric basses.

GREG EVANS Greg Evans is a passionate and captivating performer, pedagogue and composer. His passion, energy, and facility on the drum set has given him experience across the spectrum of the music industry. Greg’s influence spans multiple milieus including live and studio recordings, clubs and music venues, festivals, and the classroom.

Evans earned his Masters of Music from Ithaca College (2011), and his Bachelor’s of Music from the Manhattan School of music (2009). He has studied with Gordon Stout, Justin DiCioccio, and John Riley.

Evans’ persistent, buoyant, and joyous groove has facilitated a fulfilling performing career.

Latecomers will be seated only at intervals designated by the artist. In Bartlett Theatre due to the intimacy of the space, late seating may not take place until the first intermission.

PERFORMER BIOGRAPHIES

MATT INCONTRO Matt Incontro is a woodwind musician, educator, and composer from Buffalo. Through his music he honors and builds upon jazz’s rich tradition, taking influence from Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Kenny Garrett.

Growing up he studied with prominent local saxophonists Ken Kuriscak, Russ Carere, and Craig Incontro, and soon he began taking trips to Rochester to study with Doug Stone. In 2016, he moved to Rochester to study Jazz Performance at the Eastman School of Music, learning from his studio teacher Charles Pillow as well as Clay Jenkins, Jeff Campbell, Bob Sneider, Dariusz Terefenko, and Gary Versace. Matt received his degree from Eastman in 2020, returning home to live in Buffalo at the onset of the pandemic.

Among the other accomplished jazz artists Matt has studied and performed with are Tony Kadleck, Joe Magnarelli, Loren Stillman, Bryan Lynch, Scott Robinson, Tanya Darby, Kirsten Edkins, Sherman Irby.

Matt has recently returned from

touring with the Glenn Miller Orchestra across American, Canada, Costa Rica, and Japan.

Matt participated in the 2019 Mid Atlantic Collegiate Jazz Orchestra. That same year he also performed with the Temptations and Four Tops in Rochester. In January 2020, Matt competed in the inaugural Jack Rudin Jazz Championship with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble where Wynton Marsalis awarded him best soprano saxophone soloist.

He has also studied at SUNY Fredonia, pursuing his passion for music education.
