The Westwoods join Dallas K. Beal Legacy Society to advance the arts

J

ef ferson West wood will be the first to tell you that Fredonia provided him with a “career oppor tunity of a lifetime” when he was appointed director of Michael C . Rockefeller Ar ts Center nearly four decades ago. That’s also around the time that he and his wife, Wendy, began contributing to the Fredonia College Foundation. The couple was dedicated to helping the ar ts center, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversar y, reach new levels of excellence. In the early years of R AC , there was no “Friends” pro gram to provide financial suppor t for ar ts programming, Jef ferson explained. “Most other successful ar ts centers and ar ts organizations rely on such funding as their life-blood,” he said. West wood enlisted the suppor t of some community members and received authorization from then-President Dallas K . Beal to set up the Friends of Rockefeller Ar ts Center and launch its Annual Fund. The West woods have recently taken their philanthro py to another level by joining the Dallas K . Beal Legacy Society. “Including Fredonia in our estate planning is a meaningful way of giving back. We intend to suppor t the ar ts on campus af ter I retire, but I’ d like to see my suppor t continue even af ter I die, and putting the college in my will is the best way to do this,” Jef ferson said. While much of Jef ferson and Wendy’s suppor t has been directed to ar ts programming, the couple has also given to various scholarship funds, mostly on the occasion of a retirement or in memor y of a colleague. Jef ferson, who oversees over 13 0 events each year in the four-hall ar ts complex, says one of the joys of working at Fredonia is the near- constant interaction

with students. “Bet ween the ticket of fice, backstage activity, our front- of-the-house operations and our administrative of fices, we of ten have up to 35 students working for us in any given semester,” he said. “It’s great to see these young people grow and mature while with us, and to stay in touch with them as they go on to professional careers in the ar ts and ar ts administration. The earnings from my legacy gif t will be directed to suppor ting student wages so R AC can continue to provide these oppor tunities to future generations” Jef ferson said. As members of the Beal Society, the West woods are continuing a tradition of Jef ferson’s predecessors. Rober t D’Angelo, R AC director in the early ’70s, and Ted DeDee, director in the mid-’70s, created significant endowments or have included R AC in their estate plans. “They did this because working at Fredonia helped launch their careers and they are ver y fond of this place,” Jef ferson said. “I felt if they were doing this I cer tainly should too.” The West woods encourage other donors to include R AC in their wills, as they have done. “Fredonia has been ver y good to me,” Jef ferson said.

REMEMBERING FREDONIA In addition to annual giving, making a planned gift to Fredonia allows donors to assist the university in its growth and at the same time help to achieve personal goals. The following charitable gift options are just a few examples that may offer tax savings and other advantages to donors. Bequests. Consider identifying a dollar amount or percentage of your estate to support Fredonia. Your gift can be directed to set up an endowment fund or add to an existing or unrestricted fund. Life Insurance. Rather than cancel policies you no longer need, you could name Fredonia as the beneficiary, or simply donate the policy(ies) outright. Bank Accounts and CDs. Naming Fredonia as the “payable-ondeath beneficiary” of your bank account or certificates of deposit can be a smart option. You own the assets for your lifetime and have them available for your use. Upon your death, the assets pass directly to us without going through probate. Retirement Plan Assets. Your most efficient estate planning option may be leaving all or a portion of your retirement plan or IRA to charity, because tax laws often subject these assets to the highest combined income and estate taxes upon death. You can explore passing more tax-favored assets to your family.

Charitable Remainder Trust. A charitable remainder trust pays a fixed or variable income to the donor. The payments are made either for life or a period of time not to exceed 20 years. At the end of the trust’s term, the balance in the trust supports Fredonia’s mission. Corporate Match. Check with your Human Resources department to find out if you are eligible to receive a charitable corporate match from your employer. Donors simply fill out a charitable matching gift form required by their employer. Your charitable donation to Fredonia is then matched by the employer up to a certain percentage based on their policies. This is a quick way to increase the impact of your gift to Fredonia. Charitable Lead Trust. This type of charitable trust pays income to one or more charitable organizations, typically for a period of years, after which the remaining trust assets pass to family members.

Securities. Give stocks that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you have owned them longer than one year you will pay no capital gains tax on the transition, and you can deduct the full fair market value.

Real Estate. This is a simple donation if you own property that is not mortgaged, has appreciated in value, and you no longer need or use. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift and avoid capital gains taxes. Plus, you have removed that asset from your taxable estate.

Charitable Gift Annuity. This is a simple contract between you and the Fredonia College Foundation that pays you a fixed dollar amount for your lifetime. The older you are, the higher your annuity rate. If you use appreciated property to fund the gift annuity, you will escape the capital gains tax on the gift portion of the transaction. Plus, you are able to spread the remaining capital gains tax over your lifetime. You may also receive a partial income tax deduction.

Perpetuating the appreciation of fine arts

F

or the past t wo years, the Hillman Opera, produced by the Fredonia School of Music, has received funding from the Oliver G . & Sarah Sloan Bauman Fund for the Ar ts. Administered through the Community Foundation for Greater Buf falo, the fund was established in 1996 by Sarah Bauman Bax ter as a unique way to memorialize her father by including his name in her own endowment . Mrs. Bax ter and her father shared a love for the classics, including classical languages, ballet and opera. At the end of her life, she translated that love into a bequest, which Bax ter said should help “perpetuate the appreciation of such fine ar ts as an impor tant and integral par t of our culture.” Bauman funding has been instrumental in creating magical set designs, and elegant and evocative costuming for Hillman productions, as well as providing enhancements to the “ technical” elements of opera pro ductions like music, lighting and choreography. Rober t Strauss, producer of the Hillman Opera, noted, “Bauman funding has made it possible to do more in creating an aesthetically and emotionally pleasing experience for our audience…and continues the long and distinguished 8

tradition of Fredonia’s Hillman Opera.” For over 60 years, the Hillman Opera has provided one of the only full opera oppor tunities for undergraduate singers in the countr y. In suppor ting opera at Fredonia and the region, the Hillman Memorial Music Association has played a long-standing and significant role in student professional development, the of fering of high- caliber per formance events to the campus and community, and suppor ting the future of the opera medium. “The annual Hillman Opera is a unique endeavor, representing the best of the collaborative spirit on campus,” according to Dr. Strauss. “It is sponsored by the Hillman Memorial Music Association and its community-based board of directors who work together with the faculty and students of both the School of Music and the Depar tment of Theatre and Dance to create an enormous and ex tremely exciting event annually.” Suppor t for the Hillman Opera and other ar ts-related activities on campus would not be possible without the help and generous suppor t of many patrons, including foundations and corporations. Charitable donations help Fredonia to thrive as a source of exceptional ar ts programming.

<– Before their first practice, Fredonia hockey players wielded rakes, brooms, paint brushes and other tools for Senior Citizen Work Day, a community service project that helps residents spruce up their homes and yards. Teams of two or three players were dispatched to the homes of 10 seniors to tackle cleanup chores, such as cleaning out garages, washing windows and yard maintenance. <– Department of Visual Arts and New Media students Erin Ruffino and Alisia Glasier created two large murals featuring portraits of five longtime Dunkirk Specialty Steel employees to honor the hardworking spirit of industrial workers in the surrounding area. Both artists hope these larger-than-life portraits foster a sense of pride in the workplace and respect to the many years of service that employees have given to Dunkirk Specialty Steel. <– Julianna Owczarczak launched “Buffalo Strong #716 Rainbow Hunt” to raise money to benefit needy families in four Western New York school districts when her final student teaching placement was curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic. Orders for 372 t-shirts, whose design is based on the full-length mural Owczarczak painted on the front door of her parents’ home, were received in two weeks. Proceeds were to be given to school districts that agreed to buy grocery store gift cards and give them to families in their area who were struggling. <– An inviting atmosphere and more efficient service are hallmarks of Willy C’s, the former Centre Point food court that opened last fall in the lower level of the Williams Center. It was once known as Willy C’s. Self-service kiosks expedite food preparation and enable students who have meal plans to keep better track of their card balances. The former El Diablo Azul eatery, now the Blue Devil Grill, has a Mexican and Italian menu. The spacious seating area was reconfigured offering traditional tables and chairs, picnic-style tables, booths, benches and bar-style tables. IT’S BACK TO WILLY C’S IN THE WILLIAMS CENTER

“Loud Existence,” a portfolio created by Abby Hart in an English course to promote sustainability, landed on major social media platforms. Ms. Hart built on class online discussions about water issues. Students were not able to work with new community partners on an advocacy project, so Hart worked on her own to promote sustainable, local food networks. She acquired chickens, salvaged wood for a raised vegetable garden and gathered roadside litter. We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc., (a nonprofit organization) which comprise the statements of financial position as of December 31, 2019 and 2018, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses, and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements. Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting policies generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation
