Introduction Pro bono work is fundamentally about partnership. Every hour of service reflected in these pages represents people coming together with a shared commitment to expanding access to justice and strengthening our communities. At Fredrikson, our impact is made possible through collaborative relationships with legal aid organizations, community nonprofits, clients, courts and the many attorneys, paralegals and staff who generously contribute their time and talent. Such partnerships allow us to reach more individuals, support more organizations and address critical community needs in ways none of us could achieve alone. While this report captures only a small portion of that work, it highlights the extraordinary power of partnership and the meaningful results that follow. To explore volunteering opportunities, click on our partners’ logos in the following pages.
Featured Partners
Katy Drahos (right), Fredrikson’s Director of Pro Bono & Community Service, meets with Louica Alexandre (left) and Maia Bowman of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid to discuss pro bono initiatives that expand access to legal services and strengthen community partnerships.
The 2026 USA Games /// Travis Anderson, Trysten Cisney In 2022, Fredrikson kicked off an ambitious project: provide pro bono lobbying and legal support for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games to be held in Minnesota. After four years and more than 1,000 hours of pro bono work, we finally were able to see the 2026 USA Games become a reality this year. Shareholder Travis Anderson led the charge as General Counsel for the 2026 USA Games and associate Trysten Cisney was the pro bono champion, recruiting colleagues and providing outstanding service. Fredrikson volunteers contributed more than 600 hours of volunteer time during the 2026 USA Games. It was a privilege to witness the joy, inclusivity and excitement that came along with it. We are proud of our work and of having been a Platinum Sponsor of the 2026 USA Games!
Special Olympics Minnesota Having established a strong partnership with Special Olympics Minnesota, we press on with our work. This fiscal year, we volunteered at the State Bowling tournament and a had a great group participate in the annual Polar Plunge. We look forward to continuing our support of this life-changing organization.

Volunteer Lawyers Network Fredrikson’s partnership with VLN goes back to its founding in 1966 and remains as strong as ever. From legal advice clinics spanning ten practice areas, to weekly shifts at Housing court, to full representation of immigrant clients, Fredrikson attorneys gave more than 2,400 hours of service to VLN clients.
/// Terry Fleming Fredrikson Shareholder Terry Fleming is a regular volunteer with VLN’s Civil Clinic. Terry took on a client from that clinic and was able to get the debt lawsuit against her voluntarily dismissed with prejudice, saving her from a stressful and costly experience that could have left her unjustly in debt.
/// John Koneck Pro Bono Counsel John Koneck recently worked on a partition action to help a victim of domestic violence access much-needed equity in the home she had previously shared with her abusive partner.
/// Chris Markuson, Shantal Pai, Robin Radke, Ian Sheppard Fredrikson attorneys are in housing court every week, and frequently more often than that! Whether it was Chris Markuson and Shantal Pai taking on representation of a client met at housing clinic, Robin Radke mentoring new volunteers while serving clients, or associate Ian Sheppard completing his first shift, Fredrikson consistently showed up.
HOUSING FIRM OF THE YEAR: FREDRIKSON & BYRON, P.A. Fredrikson stands as a powerful example of what it means to fully embrace pro bono service. In 2025, their team of volunteers – led by Katy Drahos, Erin Wehrli, and Beverly Skulratana – contributed more than 320 hours of pro bono work. Through these efforts, they served over 200 clients and staffed 64 housing clinics. Notably, Fredrikson’s contributions accounted for nearly a quarter of all Housing Court clinic shifts in Hennepin County. This level of engagement reflects a deep institutional commitment to expanding access to justice. The collective impact of their work is both significant and inspiring, and the Housing Program is proud to recognize Fredrikson as this year’s Housing Firm of the Year. Together, these honorees highlight the profound difference that dedicated volunteers and committed firms can make in advancing housing stability and justice for all.
Fredrikson’s contributions accounted for nearly a quarter of all Housing Court clinic shifts in Hennepin County.
FISCAL YEAR 2026 FIRM HOURS AND PARTICIPATION
25,448 HOURS DONATED
93%
ATTORNEY PARTICIPATION
2,633 PARALEGAL HOURS
AVERAGE HOURS DONATED The average of 49.6 hours per attorney underscores the significant time and effort invested in supporting individuals and organizations through pro bono representation.
The Advocates for Human Rights Fredrikson attorneys were present at the formation of The Advocates for Human Rights in 1983. In FY2026, they provided more than 3,800 hours of pro bono time to The Advocates and their clients. Our partnership is one of mutual respect and shared commitment to the rule of law and human dignity.
/// Eldri Johnson, Tom Brett Shareholder Eldri Johnson and associate Tom Brett led a team of summer associates to research and report on the death penalty in Sierra Leone as part of the Universal Periodic Review process. They were one of several teams that provide research and report-drafting support for projects for The Advocates.
/// Ryan Young Shareholder Ryan Young worked to help a family secure lawful permanent residence after navigating significant government delays that paused adjudication of I-485 applications for Afghan nationals. Although two of the children’s applications remained pending long after the rest of the family had received their green cards, the team persisted, working with Senator Tina Smith’s office to advocate for resolution. Their efforts recently resulted in approvals for the remaining two children, ensuring the entire family now has permanent resident status and is on a path toward U.S. citizenship.
Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) Across the country, legal aid organizations represent clients in civil proceedings that impact safety, stability and the rights of marginalized communities. Fredrikson supports this work locally through a long partnership with Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid. In FY26, Fredrikson attorneys and staff contributed more than 1,400 hours of pro bono work to MMLA clients.
At a time of high demand, Fredrikson worked with MMLA to develop and present training materials for creating a team of more than 30 Fredrikson attorneys who helped with intake calls for individuals in immigration detention. Volunteers learned how to navigate communication in detention centers and gather critical information using standardized intake tools. When it was necessary to rely on interpreters, Fredrikson covered the costs to free up resources for MMLA.
Pro se Packet project: As a follow-up to detainee intake calls done by Fredrikson, MMLA and other volunteers, our legal assistants and paralegals assist with preparing and mailing MMLA-created legal information packets to clients in detention. This work ensures that detainees receive timely, reliable materials that can help them understand their options and next steps while MMLA attorneys focus on direct legal advocacy.
LegalCORPS Since Fredrikson operates at the intersection of law and business, partnering with LegalCORPS is a natural fit. Their mission is to provide legal assistance in transactional matters to limited-resourced entrepreneurs, business owners, inventors and small nonprofits.
/// Collin Crosswhite, Daniel Mott Associate Collin Crosswhite and shareholder Daniel Mott assisted the Cloquet Area Fire District Firefighter’s Relief Association with updating its governance documents to align with guidance issued by the state. Their work helped strengthen the Association’s organizational framework and support its ongoing compliance efforts. Through this work, our attorneys helped a vital community organization remain focused on its mission of supporting the firefighters who serve the Cloquet area.
/// Rachel Yadlosky, Jordan Lee, and Eric Snustad Fredrikson attorneys Rachel Yadlosky, Jordan Lee, and Eric Snustad provided pro bono intellectual property assistance to a LegalCORPs entrepreneur developing innovative functional garment technology. The team helped prepare and file a patent application covering a functional garment system designed to improve user convenience. Their work paved the way for the inventor to seek to protect novel technology and advance efforts to bring an innovative product to market, a significant effort which is out of reach for many low-income entrepreneurs.
LEGALCORPS ANNOUNCES FREDRIKSON AS THE 2026 PRO BONO AWARD WINNER: Pro bono service is at the heart of the legal profession, and Fredrikson has spent decades proving what that statement looks like in practice. Their lawyers, paralegals, interns and staff help to ensure that individual freedoms and rights are protected, that people unfamiliar with the court system have assistance navigating that foreign world, and, most importantly, that voices are heard where they otherwise would not be. At LegalCORPS, we see that commitment up close. From July 1, 2025 through May 31, 2026, Fredrikson attorneys, paralegals, and legal administrative assistants collectively invested 917.6 hours into LegalCORPS cases and matters, serving the entrepreneurs, inventors and nonprofits who are the backbone of our communities. That is not a number. That is hundreds of people whose businesses survived, whose organizations were protected, and whose futures were made more secure because Fredrikson showed up. LegalCORPS is grateful to count Fredrikson & Byron as a cornerstone partner. Your generosity of time, talent, and expertise makes our mission possible, and your example makes our entire pro bono community stronger.

Minnesota Habeas Project (Newly housed at The Advocates for Human Rights)
The Minnesota Habeas Project (MHP) was formed this year to bring together volunteer attorneys from across the legal community to help ensure that individuals in immigration detention have meaningful access to the legal process. Through this collaborative effort, our lawyers advocate for fair consideration of claims, reinforcing the fundamental principle that due process is essential to a just legal system. By contributing our time and legal skills, we help promote access to justice for individuals navigating complex proceedings.
/// Nicole Moen, Bridget Penick, Panhia Vang, Caleb Piersma Through MHP, Shareholders Nicole Moen, Bridget Penick and Panhia Vang, along with former associate Caleb Piersma, worked to represent an individual who was unexpectedly detained despite having previously received immigration-related protections and had no significant criminal history. Working under urgent circumstances, the team filed a habeas petition to ensure the client had access to judicial review and that the government could demonstrate a lawful basis for detention. In what was the best possible outcome for our client, the federal court ultimately ordered the client’s release, reinforcing the principle that detention decisions must comply with legal requirements and procedural safeguards.
Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) VLP connects pro bono attorneys with low-income clients in need of support for their civil legal needs. Fredrikson has been a long-time partner in our Des Moines office, and we routinely take on full representation matters and volunteer at legal clinics.
/// Jared Bock, Brandon Underwood Fredrikson associate Jared Bock and shareholder Brandon Underwood represented an individual facing a collection lawsuit arising from debt incurred through financial abuse by a former partner. After the creditor sought summary judgment, our attorneys successfully opposed the motion, persuading the court that important factual disputes warranted further consideration. The court denied both the summary judgment motion and a subsequent motion to reconsider, ultimately leading to dismissal of the case, which allowed the client to move on towards safety and stability.
Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) NDC provides the training, loans, business services and real estate resources that entrepreneurs need to turn their ideas into thriving businesses. It has partnered with Fredrikson for decades to support those entrepreneurs.
/// John Koneck, Bridget Hoffmann Fredrikson pro bono counsel John Koneck and associate Bridget Hoffmann provided pro bono representation to a small business owner involved in a commercial lease dispute. The team advised the client throughout negotiations, worked closely with opposing counsel on settlement terms, and helped resolve complex legal and business issues affecting the client’s operations. Their strategic efforts helped the client navigate a challenging situation and focus on the future of the business.

Fredrikson Associate Volunteer of the Year Award /// Nate Converse Nate Converse’s pro bono work reflects the power of partnership and persistence in the pursuit of justice. Working alongside colleagues, legal aid partners and co-counsel, he has dedicated substantial time to complex post-conviction and habeas matters, helping individuals navigate some of the legal system’s most challenging proceedings. This year, his efforts contributed to significant progress in multiple cases before the Louisiana Supreme Court, including a successful effort to secure an evidentiary hearing for a client seeking exoneration. Nate also provided representation in matters involving detained individuals facing significant legal challenges. Through his collaborative approach, exceptional advocacy and commitment to serving those most in need, Nate has made a meaningful difference in the lives of his clients and embodies the values at the heart of Fredrikson’s pro bono program.
Fredrikson Associate Volunteer of the Year Award /// Panhia Vang Panhia Vang exemplifies the power of partnership in pro bono service. Throughout the year, she collaborated with legal aid and community organizations to assist clients in housing, immigration and other civil legal matters. She also helped refugee families navigate evolving government procedures, providing compassionate guidance during periods of uncertainty. As a bilingual attorney, Panhia was particularly passionate about serving members of the Hmong community, helping bridge language and cultural barriers to legal services. Her dedication, adaptability and commitment to clients made a meaningful difference in the lives of those she served and reflect the collaborative spirit that drives impactful pro bono work.
Fredrikson Spirit of Service Award /// Lindsey Underberg Lindsey Underberg embodies the spirit of service through her longstanding commitment to pro bono work and community engagement. This year, she played a critical role in supporting the firm’s pro bono efforts, providing project management and intake support that helped volunteers serve clients more effectively and expanded the firm’s capacity to meet community needs. Lindsey also volunteers with The Advocates for Human Rights’ court observation program, where she helps train new volunteers and bears witness to the experiences of individuals navigating the immigration system. Her compassion, initiative and dedication to helping others exemplify the vital role that professional staff play in advancing access to justice. Lindsey’s contributions have strengthened the firm’s pro bono program and made a meaningful difference in the lives of those it serves.

Dedicated to Service The work highlighted in this report reflects the efforts of many people across the firm – the attorneys and paralegals listed below but also legal administrative assistants, pro bono staff, librarians, intake staff and others who help make this work possible. And what we feature in this report is only a fraction of what we have done over the past year to serve our communities. Together, these efforts reflect a firmwide commitment to show up for our communities – with gratitude, purpose and the shared belief that pro bono work is an essential part of who we are. The Pro Bono Committee and management of the firm thank everyone who has contributed their time and efforts to our programs. At Fredrikson, being the firm “where law and business meet” has always meant more than understanding our clients’ goals. It means using our experience, perspective and relationships to help people and organizations move forward, and it includes those who need legal help but may not otherwise have access to it. That sense of responsibility is not new or trendy here. It is part of our culture and our community-driven approach. We recognize the power of collaboration and relationships, and we remain committed to bringing people together to advance justice through pro bono representation, board service, volunteerism and partnerships.
