1.1 Honoring Lives, Securing Legacies

1.1a Standing by Our Veterans /// Angela Horel, John Koneck

Facing foreclosure and a medical assistance lien that threatened to eliminate all equity and leave him homeless, a veteran was in urgent need of legal support. Angela Horel, Trust & Estates shareholder, and John Koneck, former Real Estate shareholder and now pro bono counsel, stepped in. Through a series of complex legal actions, they secured the veteran’s recognition as the rightful heir, eliminated the lien and facilitated the sale of the property, successfully halting foreclosure and giving the client access to the equity in the home. As a result, he now has the financial means to obtain stable,

affordable housing that meets his needs as a senior living with disabilities.

1.1b Safeguarding Veterans’ Wishes In 2025, Fredrikson launched a new partnership with the Minneapolis VA and Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) to provide pro bono wills to senior veterans. This clinic builds on our efforts with the Fargo Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and MMLA’s Senior Wills program, expanding our reach to serve more veterans across the region. Our initiatives ensure that aging individuals who have served our country receive vital legal support to safeguard their wishes and bring peace of mind to them and their families. Fredrikson is honored to work alongside our VA partners and MMLA in delivering these essential services, reflecting our deep commitment to dignity, service and community care.

1.1c Honoring a Shared Home /// John Koneck

In a complex matter that started out as a real estate partition lawsuit, then became a probate case and finally resulted in an action to reform a deed, pro bono counsel John Koneck successfully represented a long-time Minneapolis resident seeking to affirm her rightful ownership of a home she shared with her late partner over three decades. Although the original deed did not reflect their mutual intent to hold the property as joint tenants with right of survivorship, the court recognized their long-standing agreement and reformed the deed accordingly. The judgment confirmed her sole ownership of the home, overcoming challenges from competing claims of multiple intestate heirs and resolving a county medical assistance lien. This outcome not only honored the couple’s intentions but also enabled the client, whose only income is social security payments, to sell the property and secure stable housing better suited to her needs as a senior.

2.1 Legal Support That Builds Stronger Communities 2.1a Strength in Advocacy /// Maliya Rattliffe, Mark Vyvyan, Devin Driscoll

Associate Maliya Rattliffe, working with shareholder Mark Vyvyan, successfully represented a tenant in a rent-escrow action against a property management company. The client endured a severe bed bug infestation that rendered his apartment uninhabitable for over two months, despite repeated notifications to the landlord. The court found that the landlord had violated statutory covenants of habitability by failing to address the infestation in a timely manner. As a result, the court awarded the client full rent abatement for the affected period and partial reimbursement for hotel expenses incurred while displaced.

When the landlord appealed and challenged the district court’s authority to grant rent abatement and reimburse alternative housing costs, the team added senior associate Devin Driscoll and continued the representation. The Minnesota Court of Appeals affirmed the district court’s decision, holding that the landlord had indeed violated the statutory covenants of habitability and that the remedies awarded, including rent abatement and partial reimbursement, were within the court’s discretion

2.1b Partnering for Small Business Success Fredrikson is proud to support local entrepreneurs by delivering legal presentations on common business issues. Through partnerships with key organizations like the Neighborhood Development Center (NDC), Northside Economic Opportunity Network (NEON), West Broadway Business & Area Coalition (WBC) and LegalCORPS, we help small business owners navigate the legal landscape and build strong foundations for success.

2.1c Supporting Technology Development in Rural Iowa /// Eve Durand, Dan Blakeslee, Sean Solberg

Attorneys Eve Durand, Dan Blakeslee and Sean Solberg contributed pro bono legal services to a local inventor who had devised a temperature-regulated liquid container that can be used in providing water to livestock. They collaborated on a patent application which issued as a patent earlier this year, have continued to assist the inventor with additional filings to cover improvements to the liquid

A Culture of Service 3.1a United for the 2026 USA Games /// Chantal Wilson, Travis Anderson, Trysten Cisney

Fredrikson’s partnership with the Special Olympics USA Games continues to flourish. The Games, held every four years, will take place in Minneapolis in 2026, and a dedicated team of attorneys, led by shareholders Chantal Wilson and Travis Anderson, along with associate Trysten Cisney, has been providing critical legal support to ensure the event’s success. As the Games draw nearer, firm president Melodie Rose will lead a firmwide initiative to rally volunteers from across Fredrikson, including clients, staff, and their families and friends, to support the Games and celebrate the extraordinary athletes who

3.1b Bolstering Youth Hoops League /// David Tibbals, Christy Carrier

Attorney David Tibbals and paralegal Christy Carrier from our Fargo office have provided vital legal support to several nonprofit organizations this year, including the Fargo Youth Basketball Association (FYBA). With many of the league’s participants receiving scholarships, a strong nonprofit foundation is essential to fundraising and giving all kids the opportunity to participate. As board member and parent Anne Hoefgen declared, “Your willingness to share your time, expertise, and talents with FYBA has made a tremendous impact on our small nonprofit. Your help truly means the world to us.”

3.1c Course Set for Local Arts Hub /// Bradley Wallace

Attorney Bradley Wallace contributed pro bono legal services to the Duluth Institute of Art, working closely with the organization’s executive director and executive committee.

His efforts focused on drafting comprehensive bylaws – a foundational document that will enhance the Institute’s governance and operational clarity. This collaboration helped establish a strong framework to support the Institute’s mission and ensure its continued success and impact within the Duluth arts community.

This past fiscal year, Fredrikson’s Mergers & Acquisitions Department launched an inspiring internal challenge to deepen its community engagement. Dividing into six diverse teams, attorneys focused on meaningful contributions through pro bono work, board service, community presentations and service events, with each activity earning points in a spirited competition that ran from December through April. Congratulations to the winning team, “Rightful Remedy,” which included Wes Eikmeier, Eldri Johnson, Sean Kearney, Jake Levine, John McCutcheon, Carl Numrich, Hannah Peterson, Robert Rohloff, Erik Splett and Roxanne Thorelli. Most notably, the challenge led to an 88% increase in department pro bono hours and marked the first year every member of the department participated in pro bono work. 3.1e First Year Impact Fredrikson’s 2024 first-year associates wasted no time making a difference. From our Minneapolis and Des Moines offices, they contributed to 118 pro bono matters spanning nearly every practice area, from nonprofit incorporations and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) filings to complex litigation initiatives.

Their commitment to access to justice was matched by action. Each associate averaged more than 110 hours of pro bono service, supported by expanded billable hour credit. This remarkable effort was made possible through strong collaboration with Fredrikson shareholders, the pro bono team, and our dedicated community partners. Together, they’ve set a high bar and a bright future for pro bono at Fredrikson.

3.1f Central Iowa Deaf Academy /// Christ Storey, Susan Ramfjord

Attorney Chris Storey, with the support of paralegal Susan Ramfjord, provided pro bono legal services to the nonprofit Central Iowa Deaf Academy (CIDA). CIDA’s mission is to offer dual‑language instruction in American Sign Language and English to Deaf and Hard of Hearing students whose needs are not being met in their local school districts.

Throughout the year, Chris and Susan assisted CIDA with a range of foundational legal matters to support the school’s planned opening in Fall 2026. Their work included nonprofit formation, securing 501(c)(3) status, exploring state and private funding options, establishing board governance, drafting service contracts, and identifying rental space. Their contributions helped lay the groundwork for a school designed to meet a critical educational need in the community.

3.1g Conviction Overturned /// Nate Converse, Emani Marshall-Loving

Through a referral from the Minnesota State Public Defender’s Pro Bono Program, Fredrikson senior associate Nate Converse successfully represented a client in a criminal appeal before the Minnesota Court of Appeals. The case centered on a warrantless traffic stop that led to a firearm possession charge. After thorough briefing and oral argument, the appellate court found that law enforcement lacked reasonable, articulable suspicion to justify the stop, rendering the search unconstitutional.

The court reversed the district court’s decision, suppressed all resulting evidence, and vacated the conviction without remand, delivering a powerful affirmation of constitutional protections and due process. Nate was assisted by associate Emani Marshall-Loving, and a team of shareholders helped ensure he was prepared and ready for

4.1 Reuniting Families, Restoring Futures

4.1a Together Toward a New Future /// Jennifer Pusch, Marvic Salminen-Morillo

After six years of dedicated advocacy, a Fredrikson team led by shareholder Jennifer Pusch and supported by paralegal Marvic Salminen-Morillo celebrated a life-changing milestone with their pro bono client, a young woman from Guatemala. Fleeing abuse and violence, she arrived in the U.S. alone at 16 and was referred to Fredrikson through The Advocates for Human Rights. The team guided her through removal proceedings and an asylum application, secured Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (working with Katy Graves, a family law attorney from Henson & Efron, to secure a necessary court order), and ultimately helped her obtain lawful permanent residency in 2024. Along the way, she graduated high school, found stable work and began building a future of her own. Her green card marks not just the end of a legal journey but the beginning of a new life filled with possibility. This would not have been accomplished without collaboration between ProBono /// 2025

4.1b Hope Realized /// Loan Huynh, Lauren Breckenridge, Mimi Alworth, Brooke Trottier, Ashley Loayes

In 2017, a courageous woman fled persecution in her home country and arrived in the United States, leaving behind her children and a meaningful diplomatic career. Targeted for her work promoting international understanding and for being a woman, she endured years of threats and violence before seeking asylum. With support from The Advocates for Human Rights and Fredrikson’s immigration attorneys, her asylum was granted in 2020, and she became a lawful permanent resident in 2021. The team then worked tirelessly to reunite her with her children and young grandchild, navigating complex legal hurdles that included I-730 petitions and Humanitarian Parole. Her children were approved, but her beloved grandchild was left behind. After years of tenacious efforts, her grandson was recently granted admission into the U.S., marking a joyful milestone in a long journey of resilience and hope.

4.1c Supporting Immigrant Youth Last summer, Fredrikson attorneys and summer associates partnered with the Volunteer Lawyers Network (VLN) to guide immigrant youth, ages 18-21, through the critical first step of the Special Immigrant Juvenile Classification (SIJC) process. Working alongside immigration attorneys from Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid and the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM), the team successfully filed Predicate Orders in state court for five young clients who had experienced abuse, neglect or abandonment. These orders now enable immigration attorneys to pursue Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) classification, a pathway that can lead to lawful permanent residency, offering each youth a path to stability, safety and opportunity in the U.S. The experience was deeply meaningful for all involved, and the team developed workflows and resources to continue this impactful work. This project exemplifies how collaboration across roles, organizations and communities can create life-changing outcomes.

4.1d Perseverance in Partnership /// Ryan Young, Kiel McElveen, Debra Schneider

After fleeing persecution in Ethiopia, a Fredrikson client spent eight years separated from his wife and children while seeking asylum in the United States.

Debra Schneider, and Legal Assistants Emmy Nelson (retired) and Jan Stahura worked together to prepare his asylum and permanent residence applications, ultimately securing approval. Ryan and Emmy then filed petitions to reunite the client with his family, navigating years of delays, including pandemic-related embassy closures, with persistence and support from Senator Tina Smith’s office.

Last year, the family’s visas were finally issued. This victory means the client was able to embrace his wife and children for the first time since 2016, restoring the family’s unity and offering them safety, stability and a path to citizenship. The outcome is a testament to the power of collaboration and persistence.

4.2 Crisis Response and Citizenship

4.2a Hope Amid Hardship /// Ashley Roth

In the final hours of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, a father and two of his children were forced to flee amid chaos and violence. As they approached the airport, a suicide bomb tore through the crowd, separating them from the rest of their family. With no way to reconnect, they were airlifted out the next day – leaving behind the man’s wife and the remaining six children. One teenage son later escaped to Germany after being detained by the Taliban. The father, now in the U.S., faced the impossible: securing safety for his children while knowing that returning could mean death.

With support from Fredrikson attorney Ashley Roth, the father and his two children received asylum and began the long, uncertain process of reunification. Ashley worked across agencies and with congressional offices to push forward immigration petitions and consular coordination. This spring, after years of separation and persistent advocacy, the teenage son was reunited with his father and ProBono /// 2025

siblings in the U.S. The hard-won moment was emotional – a reminder of the stakes involved and the

power of legal advocacy to change lives. The work to reunite the entire family continues.

4.2c Compassion in Action Earlier this year, our partners at ILCM identified an urgent need: a fast-approaching deadline for Ukrainians who had fled war to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). In response, 12 Fredrikson attorneys, from first-year associates to seasoned shareholders, stepped up to assist 22 displaced individuals. Working closely with ILCM to ensure our teams were well-prepared, our attorneys delivered timely, compassionate legal support to clients navigating an incredibly difficult chapter in their lives.

4.2d Together Toward Citizenship /// Robin Radke

In early 2025, seven Fredrikson attorneys joined our first Citizenship Cohort in partnership with the ILCM to help low-income lawful permanent residents take the final step in their immigration journey. In May, Fredrikson attorney Robin Radke attended her client’s oath ceremony, our Cohort’s first, where her client was one of 500 people from 89 countries who became new citizens. Robin’s client, originally from Burundi, had received her green card through the Diversity Visa Program and spent the past several years working as a Direct Support Professional while raising three children. Robin’s dedication, shown through her timely filings, compassionate client care, and enthusiastic participation in training, made her a trusted advocate. Her story is a powerful reminder that with support and teamwork, any attorney can make a lasting impact.

5.1b Fredrikson Associate Volunteer of the Year Award /// Tanner Pearson

Tanner Pearson, a senior Energy associate in Fredrikson’s Bismarck office, dedicated nearly 200 hours to pro bono service last fiscal year. He worked with three clients on amicus briefs submitted to the Supreme Court of the United States. Two of these matters, referred by the American Bar Association Death Penalty Project, were urgent, short-notice cases. Tanner’s exceptional work on these briefs drew attention from another law firm, which asked him to prepare a similar pro bono brief for one of their clients. He readily accepted and again delivered a high-quality submission. Tanner also serves on Fredrikson’s Pro Bono Committee, where his leadership and contributions helped the

Marvic Salminen-Morillo, a legal administrative assistant and paralegal in the Corporate and Securities department in Minneapolis, contributed 117 hours to pro bono matters during fiscal year 2025. Bilingual and highly skilled, Marvic is a vital resource for attorneys working with Spanishspeaking clients. She consistently offers interpretation, administrative support and assistance with filings for any pro bono matter. Her growing expertise in Special Immigrant Juvenile Classification cases has empowered attorneys to take on more cases in this critical area and has helped the pro bono team establish accurate and efficient workflows.

Among Marvic’s most valued strengths is her ability to build meaningful professional relationships with clients. She approaches each individual with dignity and respect, quickly establishing rapport and making the legal process more comfortable for everyone involved.

Marvic is tireless in her efforts to assist people in need of pro bono services. She’s passionate, empathetic and always willing to get involved in projects either leading or helping with a team. Each fall, Fredrikson staff come together to support Agate Housing + Services by assembling hygiene kits for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

In 2024, the team assembled 240 kits. Case managers distribute them during meetings with participants, helping meet essential needs while building trust and connection.

For over 35 years, Open Arms of Minnesota has provided medically tailored meals free of charge to critically ill Minnesotans and their loved ones. These efforts help ensure that vulnerable community members receive the nutrition and care they need during challenging times.

Fredrikson’s Bismarck office once again partnered with Bismarck Parks & Recreation for a hands-on day of community service. The team planted trees and enhanced the park’s natural beauty, going beyond volunteering by also purchasing trees and supplies to support the effort.

The Des Moines office partnered with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity through Drake Law School’s Mark S. Cady Day of Public Service. Shareholders, associates and staff spent the day assembling cabinets for homes, demonstrating that volunteering with Habitat is a

And the featured matters are only a small fraction of the work we’ve undertaken in the past year for the benefit of our communities. We aren’t just fortunate to be able to do this work; it takes a deliberate decision to prioritize pro bono and put forth the resources to make it possible for everyone.
