AND LIKE CHILDREN WE CONTINUE TO GROW, TO LEARN AND TO LOVE.

We came as individuals, from different lifestyles, different backgrounds,

in pursuit of different goals with different aspirations.

:

laiHluii illiiiciaadim And we stepped into college life .

Some of us were veterans of college life, others came to a new experience, but each of us became Bethany Nazarene College.

5

We studied together,

and we played together. 7

With each day we learned more about each other,

8

9

and we learned more about God. In looking we found an omnipotent father, and like children we were overwhelmed by the thought.

10

But we found God reaching down to us, and in each other we found more of God’s love. And like children we continue to grow, to learn and to love.

BNC Retreat . . . .

On the 3rd of October, thirty-two stu dents braved the perils of an eight hour bus ride, leaving behind the chaotic cam pus of B.N.C. From the first moment it was obvious that Kanakuk had something special to offer each of us. For some it was a chance to sing songs and dream dreams. For others, a time to appreciate the beauty of God’s wonderful creations. It was a time to learn . . . . about our selves . . . . about each other.

October 18 marked the date of the tra ditional “ Powder Puff” football game. Both teams held long strenuous practices to prepare for the big event. Uppers were coached by B. Stolte, J. Case, and M. Boomer. Freshman coaches were L. Ju lian, D. Lewis, R. Scott, and G. Gunn. Though the uppers triumphed 18-6, the freshman squad, who suffered some “ bad” calls, proved to be more of a chal lenge than in years past. Highlight of halftime was the crowning of the 1980-81 Campus Clod, Darrell Blythe. Darrell was chosen over stiff competitors like Senior Jay Case, Junior Steve Griffin, and Fresh man Steve Jacobs. Even though the night was chilly, the crowd’s hearts were warmed by the fantastic show put on by the Freshman and Upperclass cheer leaders.

Halloween Carnival On The Street AMS-AWS Carnival held a new twist this year. It was moved from the Mall to College Street. There was quite a crowd milling around the booths for dunking people, kissing people, jailing people, hiding people, marrying peo ple, taking pictures of people, feeding people, and selling people. The Slave Sale was the highlight of the evening. Not to mention the dunking booth, which allowed the Freshmen to get re venge on a few of the Upper Classmen!

Halloween Haunted House And Trick-Or-Treating This year Chorale hosted the only annual Haunted House, on second floor Bud Robinson. Every mem ber of Chorale participated, making it an “ Evening of Horror!” The night began with “ m ood” music, per formed by Count Dracula. (Alias: Prof. David Miller.) Groups were then allowed to tour the upper floor of Bud. It was here that they were scared, horrified, and threatened within an inch of their lives! In all it was an evening to be remembered-with the lights on! Trick-or-Treating came later, with everyone dress ing in costume.

Times Of Our Lives

Homecoming 1980 was truly a time to remember. Among the hustle of the Queen Candidates preparing themselves for that evening, many activities had also begun. AMS held their FatherSon Breakfast with Dean Barnard as guest speaker. AWS also held their annual Mother-Daughter Breakfast Style Show, which had many of the “ new looks” for the 80’s. The guest speaker for the ladies was Pam Pryor. Following the breakfasts, the 2nd Annual Homecoming Parade made its appearance on campus. Finally, that evening the theme, “ times of our Lives” came to reality for the Homecoming Court. Each candidate’s Father spoke about their memories of their little girls lives. Surely this moment will be added to those memories of past. Cherly MerrillUnderwood gave Eunice Ward a special memory as she crowned her 1980 Homecoming Queen. The Game that evening made the whole day a time that would not be forgotten soon. The Redskins took a strong victory over the Central State Broncos with a score of 82-68.

Second Annual Homecoming Parade Our Campus held its Second Annual Homecoming Parade. Even Mickey & Minnie Mouse got involved as they led the festive occasion. The parade ceremony had a new addition when PBL won a first place award for their float. Darrell Blythe, the 1980 Campus Clod made an appearance for his admiring fans.

36

Coronation Of The Queen Masters of ceremony Lanny Lee and Ami Pryor an nounced that Cheryl Merrill-Underwood 1979 Queen would be leaving her reign to Eunice Ward. Escorting Cheryl was her husband James. Doug Schlabach es corted the 1980 Homecoming Queen, Eunice Ward.

Yule Feast

40

On December 12, Sagaland changed its atmosphere, looks, and pace to offer to all mind-weary students a chance to relax and enjoy the Christmas spirit-YULE FEAST. The feast itself consisted of steak or shrimp, baked potato, salad, drinks and other delicacies. Entertainment was pro vided by Bruce Phillips, Darrell Blythe, Donna Kyser, Jackie Burgman, Andy Justin, Darrell Jayroe and Rick Martin. The highlight of the evening was the surprise visit of Santa and his reindeers. It was truly a joyous occasion.

“ The Magic Of Love” Heart Pal February 14, 1981

Heart Pal

This evening held an enchating moment for the ladies of the court, as well as those in the audience. The theme “ The Magic of Love,” truly described the atmosphere as many engagements were announced. Returning Queen Linda Echols, escorted by her fiancee Larry Snowbarger, relinquished her crown to an ecstatic Deb bie Hubbard. Miss Hubbard, also was escorted by her fian cee, Rick Rains. He, looked like a proud husband-to-be. Mater of ceromonies Obed Watters added a light touch of humor to the festive occasion. How many times does a lady get described as 157 centimeters in height. Only a mathemati cian could be so funny.

Turn About Is Fair Play . . . Twirp Dates B.N.C. Women enjoy “ wearing the pants’ ’ on cam pus. When Twirp Week rolls around, guys can be seen biting their nails and batting their eyelashes in anticipa tion as our campus bachelorettes study their student directories for the “ best choice.’ ’ All week long those macho men practice the arts of trifling flirtations and experience the frustrations of a “ lady in w aiting’ ’. Twirp dates consist of a variety of amusements ranging from an admirable exhibition of brute strength on the “ powderpuff’ ’ football field, to a gourmet dinner, a dozen roses, or a promising drive around the lake. As the B.N.C. Twirpees would enthusiastically agree: “ Memo ries are made of this.”

1-Kim Elliot and her date Larry Sanders find that a latenight picnic is delicious. (2) Waterlovers Robin and John enjoy an aquatic twirp experience. (3) Romantic twirps feed each other gracefully. (4) John “ M ark” Sickles and Robin Gunn feel comic relief is the best cure for twirp date jitters. (5) Me, twirped? This must be a joke!

Working Our Lives Away

^

At Bethany Nazarene College, like most other colleges, students work. Not only because they need to, but because they have to. They work to support their bad habits, such as buying clothes, keeping dates happy, twrip or otherwise, cruising up and down Northwest 39th Expressway, and Big Mac attacks. Yes, even at BNC working is an essential, if not to keep you going, then to keep you from going insane.

Summer Ministries David Weeks was a part of the group “ Discovery ’80” this summer. The group was composed of 16 singers and musicians who were Christian college students. They toured 27 states and Canada. “ I learned to meet people where they are and love them as Jesus loves. I learned that what you are inside is what you project in ministry. I watched God take human effort consecrated to Him, bless it, and return it with the fruit of His Spirit. I learned that regardless of prestige, social class, or race, everyone needs love. Ministry starts with meeting this need.”

D’ Anne Paul was envolved with Contact ’80 which presented the Gospel to kids through puppets, games, skits, songs. “ In attem pting to love those kids — in trying to show Jesus through my life, I think I received more than I ever gave. Not only were there hugs and sticky kisses that rewared us for our work but the spiritual growth I experienced was worth it all.”

Debbie Hubbard was also with Contact ’80. “ This summer was not only a time of seeing Jesus work in the people’s lives He ministered through us, but seeing Him meet needs in my life. God showed me if I’ m com m itted He will meet my needs in areas of weakness. The summer of 1980 will always stand out in my memories as I tried to be Jesus’s disciple to many and all different backgrounds of people.”

Donna Roberts traveled to the islands of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Antigua, West Indies as part of the International Student Ministries. “ The Lord taught me how to love and to give of myself entirely to these people. It was a lesson that I will never, ever forget.”
