From the Head of School Dear FAmily,

I look forward to writing to you in the Head’s Report each year because the composition of this letter forces me to reflect on all that took place at Fredericksburg Academy during the preceding school year. This reflection brings me joy.

The 2016-17 school year was Fredericksburg Academy’s twenty-fifth school year, beginning our twenty-fifth

anniversary celebration. This is an exciting time in our school’s history, one that Falcons past and present have an equal stake in. Head of School Karen Moschetto with AnneTillery Melson ‘17, the class valedictorian, at the Upper School Convocation Ceremony.

Our community came together through giving in extraordinary ways. You will read about some of the highlights in the pages to follow. It is not possible to share with you all that your gifts accomplished for Fredericksburg

Academy students and faculty, so we focus on the greatest initiatives in this publication, but I never want us to lose sight of the importance of everyday support through the Annual Fund.

It’s because of our annual campaign’s success that we are able to build labs, transform outdoor space, and

innovate in the curriculum. Thank you for partnering with us throughout 2016-17 to advance the mission of Fredericksburg Academy and, in turn, strengthen our community. Together, anything is possible, and I’m honored to work alongside you as we take Fredericksburg Academy into its next quarter-century. Go Falcons!

Sincerely,

Karen A. Moschetto Head of School

Virginia Living Magazine’s Crush on FA and #TechCrushTuesday

F

or its fourth consecutive year, Fredericksburg Academy has been recognized as a Top High School by Virginia Living Magazine. Fredericksburg Academy is the only Fredericksburg-area school to receive this yearly honor.

Fredericksburg Academy earned this past year’s honor for its implementation of #TechCrushTuesday, an innovative, six-week, all-school STEM initiative led by Upper School physics and chemistry teacher, Joe Kohlman, and Lower School instructional technology resource teacher, Carolyn Anderson. Over the course of six weeks, students across all divisions engaged in a variety of topics. Up-

per and Middle School students heard talks from a variety of experts on bird tagging, coding, and ethical hacking. Upper and Middle School students also experimented with molecular gastronomy, circuitry, and 3-D printing. Lower School students participated in the six-weeks of technology through experimenting with acids and bases in food, conductivity in foods, coding-related activities, and activities incorporating FA’s Bright Think projector.

#TechCrushTuesday allowed students to learn the value of a variety of technical skills and the importance of different technological devices in everyday life. The six-week event stirred up so much interest that the school was able to host more technology-related events such as a series of mini-tech Tuesdays in the Lower School, a Science Fair in the Middle School, and a four-week-long Physics Olympics in the Middle and Upper Schools. Plants & Grants: Student-led Conservation and Philanthropy Converge Planting it Forward: Student-led Watershed Conservation via Native Plant Landscaping By Audrey Green and David Steinberger, Middle and Upper School science teachers

F

redericksburg Academy science teachers Audrey Green (pictured above) and David Steinberger (pictured below) are getting noticed for their hands-on approach to engaging students in conservation efforts. They authored the following article after receiving a competitive grant to propel their latest student-led project forward for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) magazine.

R

emember the old adage: “You are what you eat”?

In the Chesapeake Bay, one could easily modify this maxim to be “you are what you pollute.” That’s right – mishandled trash, household cleaners, lawn chemicals, topsoil, and even car exhaust eventually end up in our most prized regional ecosystem – the Chesapeake Bay. Students at Fredericksburg Academy’s middle school learn how nonliving factors like weathering, erosion, and the water cycle transport pollutants from communities like Fredericksburg to the Bay and beyond. When chemicals and pollutants accumulate in the ecosystem, they eventually end up in the food and drinking water. Yes, Virginia – we have a problem. With the Bay’s health in mind, middle school students at Fredericksburg Academy (FA) investigate ways to improve the watershed by measuring water quality and biodiversity along the campus stream, Deep Run Creek. With a recent grant awarded by Dominion Power, FA students will use water testing kits and wildlife cameras to measure changes in pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and species abundance. This research will culminate in a report of their findings

entitled: State of the Creek. “Giving students the opportunity to analyze the quality of our creek’s water, measure true biodiversity within our woods, and communicate actual scientific results to their peers, families, and community members – is the most invaluable experience we as science educators can hope for,” explains Audrey Green, sixth and seventh grade science teacher at FA. David Steinberger, eighth grade teacher adds: “as one of the few biological corridors in our area, our stream on campus and surround woodland provide habitat to numerous organisms, including coyotes and flying squirrels. Unfortunately, it is unclear how well these species will hold up as development and pollution continue. By monitoring water quality and biodiversity, students can identify trends to better focus conservation efforts.” The Dominion grant and State of the Creek project follow years of conservation efforts and environmental work by FA students, including an annual three-day field trip with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, native tree and perennial plantings, a community garden (with produce donated to the area food bank), stream cleanups, and recycling initiatives by the school’s ECO club. As Green explains: “Seventh graders at FA are given an invaluable opportunity to better understand the environmental concerns for our local watershed. Students begin questioning the choices they make at home. ‘Should I trash or compost this banana peel?’ Do I really need to take 15 minute showers?’ These are the questions that lead to action within our community.”

Pictured on the left: students from all grade levels come together to update the Middle School gardens with money awarded by the grant. Pictured on the right: Upper School students test the water quality of Deep Run Creek.

“Giving students the opportunity to analyze the quality of our creek’s water, measure true biodiversity within our woods, and communicate actual scientific results to their peers, families, and community members – is the most invaluable experience we as science educators can hope for.” - Audrey Green With data collected by students, FA hopes that State of the Creek will open doors for collaboration with area organizations. “With data, we have power,” explains Steinberger. “Other organizations will be more interested in supporting FA’s environmental efforts with quantitative figures on the pressures facing Deep Run Creek.” The State of the Creek includes construction of a kiosk to showcase student work, as well as a collection with meaningful conservation work. Green and Steinberger hope to empower students and promote change. While it may be a small step, it is a step in the right direction.

Falcon Athletics in Retrospect - A Remarkable Year By Eyal Fierst, Athletic Director

Pictured above: Middle and Upper School Falcons competing in and winning championships in Boys Varsity Lacrosse, Varsity Field Hockey, and Boys Varsity Basketball.

W

hy do we play?

Is it fun? Do we like to spend time with our friends? Do we crave competition? Does it make us feel good about ourselves? The answer differs for all of us. It is one of the things that make sports so special. We do them for all different reasons, but we can find a way to come together and create a group, a community, a team—and still try to achieve one goal.

For those of us that have passed our athletic prime, we look back with mixed emotions at the years, seasons, and teams that we were a part of. Most of the days blend together and what really stand out are the moments. The memorable bus ride, the gut wrenching loss, the victory over a rival, a championship well earned, and the time spent with friends. We have little if no recollection of how many shots we made, goals/points we scored, or our overall win/loss records. We did not know that those moments would help to shape us and propel us forward or that the life lessons we were learning would give us the strength to make better and tougher decisions in the future. 6 Fredericksburg Academy Head’s Report • Fall 2017

This past year was full of remarkable moments and achievements at FA. Twenty one students were tri-athletes (three sport athletes) at the Varsity level and they showed up every day of every season trying to make their teams just a little bit better. Nine out of twelve of the Varsity teams competed in post-season state competition. Thirty six FA students were named All-Conference players and three were named Player of the Year in the conference. Eight students were named All-State, six were named All-Area, and one was named Player of the Year in the Area. Boys Varsity Soccer and Boys Varsity Basketball won the Delaney Athletic Conference Tournament for the first time since entering Division 1 in the Conference and Boys Varsity Lacrosse won the regular season Conference Championship for the first time in school history. All of these amazing achievements helped to create one of the best athletic years since FA’s founding. There were incredible individual efforts, yet at the same time, the foundation of “team first” was displayed daily. Each athlete played a role in making all of these wonderful things happen. We all have our different reasons for playing sports. From time to time, we are able to reflect on the impact of sports on our lives. Does it come down to just feeling like a kid for a while? Running around with friends. Getting to have some fun. For me, the answer changes every day. I do know one thing with absolute certainty, it was a remarkable year for student athletes at Fredericksburg Academy.

Empowering our Students: A Guide on Leadership from Head of School, Karen Moschetto of the students, and we’ve done just that with great success,” says Moschetto. “Their willingness to respond combined with our trust in them has caused us to evolve as leaders.” The Upper School hosts a diversity day each year where diversity-trained members of the Upper School lead discussions with Upper-School students and faculty on subjects such as body image, sexual orientation, religion, and cultural differences. “We naturally began looking towards students for guidance on trustee diversity training,” says Moschetto. “The benefits were amazing.” During these trainings, the trustees experienced the ever-talked-about “FA Difference” and witnessed the confidence and compassion portrayed on a daily basis by FA students. Ms. Moschetto’s article in The Head’s Letter opened the door for other independent schools to have the not-so-easy discussions on diversity and inclusivity awareness among their communities. “I cannot say where the future will take us in regards to diversity practices,” says Moschetto, “but I can say this—fostering a rich and diverse curriculum, promoting student leadership whenever possible, and engaging in a constant and open dialogue among all constituencies of our school community is serving our school well and will continue to guide us.” Head of School Karen Moschetto interacts and leads with students from all grade levels on a daily basis. Pictured to the left is Ms. Moschetto receiving an appreciation note from Kindergarten students.

T

he Head’s Letter, a national publication compiled of articles from various Heads of Schools on educational leadership and significant issues, recently featured a piece written by Fredericksburg Academy’s Head of School, Karen Moschetto. In “Learning to Lead” Ms. Moschetto focuses on FA’s inclusive learning environment, as well as the incorporation of diversity training and study into the Middle and Upper Schools. “One of my greatest areas of focus as Head of School,” writes Ms. Moschetto, “has been to create the most thoughtful, inclusive learning environment possible at my school. Aligning our faculty, students, and Board to this end has been a six-year process for me, and it’s far from complete.” Ms. Moschetto hosts monthly staff meetings, attends bi-monthly Board meetings, and sits in on student classes and discussions to help motivate in moving the inclusion process along. Discussions based around inclusivity and diversity play a key role in both FA’s learning environment and curriculum. “It has been important to me that we increasingly put those discussions in the hands

Honoring the Class of 2017 Outside of these three crucial aspects of life at this school, Fredericksburg Academy presents students with the opportunity to step out of the classroom and experience. With FA, we’ve walked the battlefields of the Civil War, seen beautiful art in local museums, walked the sidewalks where presidents once walked, stamped our passports in places like Costa Rica, Australia, China, London, and even on the equator line in Ecuador. I’ve traveled with my classmates and opened my eyes to cultures around me. We, together, have become worldly citizens. In the classroom we pack our brains with knowledge and prepare ourselves for lives after graduation. On the sports fields, we learn to fight to prove ourselves. On the stage, we learn to let go of the troubles of everyday life. At FA, we learn. We play. We act. We grow. We go. We do it all. And you should too and you will too over your years here at FA. Take advantage of all the opportunities they give you.

“

Hello students, faculty, parents of Fredericksburg Academy. If you didn’t know already, my name is Regan O’Donnell and I am a proud member of the class of 2017 and a proud Falcon. When I was asked to speak today, I was told to talk a little bit about what FA has done for me over my time here. That being said, that is a lot harder than it seems. I have been at this school for 13 years, and there is a lot of things I’ve learned. Too many to name. But I think some of the most important things that I’ve learned while I’ve been here are exceling in the three A’s, as I like to call them: Athletics, Academics, and Arts. An abundance of unique opportunities and a powerful sense of the community.

At FA, a solid balance of these three A’s is very important. The school provides opportunities for students to excel in the classroom, on the sports fields, and on the stage. I, a busy bee like many of my classmates, take on any opportunity that’s presented to me no matter how full that makes my plate. Over our years together, we’ve ridden the Polar Express, innovated at the Invention Convention, acted out scenes for Shakespearience, spent countless hours perfecting each of our exhibits, read 10,000 pages, written 1,000 pages. We’ve done a lot. On the sports fields, I learned new sports and improved in sports that I’ve played all my life. We swam way too many laps. Way too many laps, Just leave it at that. The Varsity Field Hockey Team won four consecutive state championships. We played undefeated seasons, but we also experienced numerous defeats. I’ve not only been on teams, I’ve been a part of the fame. On stage I’ve been a princess, a flapper, a man made of tin, a mermaid, a friend, a sister, a mother, and, again, a flapper. We bonded as classmates, made countless memories, and found who we were through being someone else. FA provides every vehicle available to help us, the students, learn our place in the community and in the world. You’re given opportunities to lead and opportunities to step back and learn from others.

Kindergarteners, where are you guys? When I was your age, I came to FA on the first day of school with bright eyes and an open mind, ready to learn. I was not, however, prepared for morning snack. I did not bring my snack the first day of school. Out of all the things I couldn’t bring, I didn’t bring my snack. I forgot my food. So there I was, at a brand new school with all new people and no snack. Nervous as anything, until one person created that connection they always talk about. As I sat there in shame without a snack, I heard a sweet voice say, “would you like to share my snack?” Thank you, Rachel, for always being willing to share your snack with me. See, FA is full of people like Rachel. People who are willing to share their snacks with you, and those are the types of people you want to be around. We are a school of generous, kind, compassionate students who truly care about each other. Trust me, the people you meet at this school will impact your life forever. So hold on to the people in the community while you still can. We are family. We are the FA family. Never forget your roots.”

Regan O’Donnell ‘17 was chosen by her peers to write and present this speech at the 2016-2017 End-of-Year Assembly.

From the President of the Board of Trustees These past fews years have held particular significance for Missy and me because we’ve now had

the privilege of watching our second daughter walk across the stage in the Donald and Susan Reed Theater to receive her Fredericksburg Academy diploma. In each of these moments and through-

out their transitions to college, it is difficult to describe the pride we felt for all that FA was able to offer them, or the gratitude we hold for all who made these achievements possible.

I want to thank you for your continued support of Fredericksburg Academy, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, but also as a parent who has seen how this school can take two very different people who first came to FA as little girls, and guide them to become strong young women, capable of defining successful paths for the future.

The Board of Trustees is Fredericksburg Academy’s governing body, but we also strive to be leaders in the philanthropy

and promotion of the school. You are constant partners in these efforts, and we are grateful for the incredible difference

you made last year in helping to raise essential funds and for sharing the transformative experience your own children are having, with your friends and family.

I echo Head of School Karen Moschetto’s sentiments in that together, anything is possible. Bring on the next twenty-five years!

Giving Spotlight: Sue Wood Memorial Scholarship Fund On Sunday, April 3, 2016, Fredericksburg Academy lost dear friend and long-time staff member Sue Wood to pancreatic cancer. Head of School Karen Moschetto remembers how much Sue cared about students and how she loved being part of school life at FA. “She was like a mom to many of the kids,” Ms. Moschetto said. “She looked out for them and was a confidant for them, and they knew she was special in that way.” A scholarship fund was created to honor Sue’s legacy at Fredericksburg Academy and to make a Fredericksburg Academy education accessible to deserving students in the Upper School. Giving Spotlight: The Spirit of Giving from One Generation to the Next Major Gift Helps Playscape Take Shape We first reported about the service and volunteerism that brought FA’s Natural Playscape to life in our last Head’s Report, however many of you may not know how this incredible space literally took shape thanks to a lead gift by a generous Fredericksburg Academy family. Integral to Head of Lower School Patty Estes’ vision for the playscape is a hardscape pathway which winds around the bird and butterfly garden. If you observe a class on the playscape today, you see the importance of this path. It provides safe passage for sand from the pit, over the dry creek bed and to the mudpie kitchen; it is the course for an endless parade of tricycle- and wagon-riders; it is the anchor that defines the overall space. This pathway would have become a roadblock to completing the playscape in time for the 2015 school year opening,, if not for the Azimipour Family.

Mansour, a member of the Board of Trustees and proud father to twin ninth-grade girls, recalls his father instilling in him the importance of giving back, at a young age. He and his wife Farzaneh strive to do the same with their daughters, who have been at FA since preschool. Sara and Saba have not been in the Lower School for several years, but in making this gift, they know they have done something wonderful for the school in which they have grown up.

Many projects followed in quick succession after the installation of the pathway and it quickly became a mainstay for play and learning in the Lower School. The Natural Playscape is a vibrant hub in which to gather, explore, and learn on campus—and this pathway is at the center of it. At the center of the pathway, is the altruism of two Falcons who wanted to do something special for Fredericksburg Academy’s youngest students and, in the process, created a legacy of their own.

Lower School students are shown above enjoying varying aspects of the Playscape, such as driving on the guided path or building in the sand pit. There is no end to student imagination!

Giving Spotlight: Celebrate FA! 2017

F

redericksburg Academy families and friends came together in the John and Virginia Hazel Sports Center on April 8, 2017 for Celebrate FA!, our annual party and auction. This annual celebration to support students and faculty never disappoints. Highlights of the evening included a standing ovation in honor of outgoing Chair Karen O’Donnell’s fifth and final Celebrate FA!, an incredible fundraising initiative to meet three critical school needs, and, of course, another adorable auction puppy!

Karen O’Donnell first gave us a Passport to the World in 2013. She made us Believe in the Magic in 2014. In 2015, she gave us the Return to the Nest, bringing Celebrate FA! back to Fredericksburg Academy’s campus after several years away. We began to Celebrate the Future in 2016 and in 2017, she left us beyond a doubt that for Fredericksburg Academy, The Best is Yet to Come. Fredericksburg Academy thanks the many people who joined Karen in leaving an indelible mark on our school and in strengthening our community in the process. Our next opportunity to celebrate FA! will be on Saturday, March 24, 2018, so save the date for our Roaring 25th!

Giving Spotlight: Investing in Students through Travel

Freddy Getty ‘17 representing FA while exploring the Galapagos Islands.

International travel at is an opportunity for students to make connections to their previous work in the classroom and a chance to recognize the extraordinary beauty of the magical attractions of the planet they live on. They encounter the immense journey of life through the geologic epochs on the Galapagos Islands. They are transported across the centuries when they walk on the Great Wall of China or run a footrace in the ancient stadium at Olympia, Greece. Climbing on the rusting, decaying German bunkers on the beaches of Normandy, they are haunted by the shaping force of history in the middle distance, the enduring shadow of the world of their grandfathers. Fredericksburg Academy students come most to life when they are abroad in the world, and wherever they go they always brings with them, not just a love of the encounter with foreign places and cultures, but an insistence on representing the best of the United States of America. The 2016-17 school year had unprecedented participation in the travel. The International Travel Scholarship Fund, first created by an alumni family several years ago, began to make these opportunities accessible to more students. A lead gift by International Travel Program Director and FA history teacher Keith Wamsley in 2016 continued the investment in Upper School students through experiential travel.
