His goal was made reality in 1971 when the C&O Canal was designated a National Historical Park. Here the justice makes his way along the towpath at Brunswick with: (L-R) Maryland State Del. C&O Canal
The year 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the C&O Canal National Historical Park joining the National Park Service system. The C&O Canal National Historical Park preserves and interprets the 19th-century transportation canal from Washington, D.C., to Cumberland, Maryland, and its associated scenic, natural and cultural resources. It also provides visitors with a wealth of opportunities for education and outdoor recreation along its 184.5 miles and 20,000 acres. ~BY THE C&O CANAL TRUST~

What is a Canal Town?
6 Greater Brunswick Area 2021-2022 Business and Community Directory
Communities like Brunswick along the C&O Canal serve an important role for the C&O Canal National Historical Park’s trail users and thru-riders, who need places to sleep, refuel, shower, do repairs, and stock up on gear. But the canal towns aren’t just for hikers and cyclists – they are great venues for all visitors to experience the charms of the canal’s communities. A canal town can be a starting point for a day ride, hike, or paddle. Finish your day by visiting a local attraction and getting lunch or dinner at a local restaurant. Enjoy each town’s unique historic architecture, museums, and culture! Each canal town’s history is deeply tied to the C&O Canal. The construction and growth of the canal during the nineteenth century brought industry to these towns, which inevitably led to a boom in growth. Inns, general stores, and restaurants were created to serve the people working and traveling on the canal. The Civil War impacted many of these towns as the Confederacy sought to damage the canal in order to stop the Union’s flow of supplies. Troops from both sides occupied many of the canal towns. www.GBACC.net
The decline and closing of the C&O Canal Company was followed by a similar decline in the fortunes of the industry-reliant canal towns. With the preservation of the canal as a National Historical Park, the canal towns now benefit from trail tourism as people come to enjoy the recreation and history of the region.
Brunswick as a Canal Town
Brunswick is one of 10 Canal Towns, and is located at mile marker 55. The Brunswick area was once home to the Susquehanna Native Americans. In the early 1700s, the region was known as “Eel town” or “Eel Pot” because the Native Americans fished for eel in the Potomac River. The town name then evolved from Berlin to Barry, and finally to Brunswick when it was incorporated in 1890, as many of the railroad workers residing there were from Brunswick, Germany. Brunswick began as a trading post on the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. The post grew into a bustling canal town with a population of 300 residents in the late 1880s. When the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad purchased much of the land along the canal and built their freight yards and maintenance shops in Brunswick, the town grew to nearly 2,500 people. The railroad has defined Brunswick ever since. Brunswick has followed the ups and downs of railroad transportation from a busy hub during World War II to a commuter community today. Brunswick is a major stop on the MARC Train line and many of its residents commute to Washington D.C.

Anniversary Beer! Smoketown Brewing Station, based in Brunswick, has created two beers to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the C&O Canal becoming a national park. The first is Fog Holler, a hazy pale ale that was released in February and named after a spot on the canal near Sandy Hook, where in the early morning, a thick fog often blankets the canal—though some locals refer to the spot at Frog Holler. “I grew up around here, and I’ve walked the canal towpath with all my dogs over the years,” said Mark Kubat, of Future History Branding, who designed the Fog Holler label. “For years, I fished there, early in the morning until I had a run-in with a bear. And my father and I have spent a lot of quality time walking the towpath or riding bikes and having really great conversations. So, it was special for me to be able to get to do this work.” Kubat looked through hundreds of historical images provided by the C&O Canal Trust before finding the perfect one to wrap around the Fog Holler can. “The image I chose was actually of a hospital, but I blacked out the word ‘hospital’ on it,” Kubat said. Brewmaster Greg Nichols chose an all-American grain and hop profile to honor the C&O being a national park, and the yeast in Fog Holler is known for its characteristic haziness, giving the beer the same hazy look as the fog on the canal. Smoketown plans for a May 2021 release of its second commemorative beer, which will be in collaboration with Devils Backbone Brewing Co., based in Virginia. Smoketown is one of 11 breweries releasing beers to commemorate the canal’s 50th anniversary. –Lauren LaRocca Greater Brunswick Area 2021-2022 Business and Community Directory 7

About Brunswick
From the city’s former nicknames like Buffalo Wallows, to movies that featured Brunswick, to the B&O executive who may have posed as a poor farmer in the late 1800s to buy land and subsequently quadruple real estate prices, check out these fascinating facts about our city. –Compiled by Lauren LaRocca
Special thanks to the Brunswick History Commission and to the Brunswick Heritage Museum for helping to provide most of this information. Learn more at www.brunswickmdhistory.com and brunswickmuseum.org.
1. Brunswick Streets are challenging because the original mapmaker was from the B&O Railroad and had never been to the area. His grid obviously didn’t fit the contour of the hills and valleys of Brunswick.
2. Despite being on the south edge
of the county, Brunswick is one of the area’s main transportation hubs. It’s a crossroads for Native American trails, trails set by the German settlers coming down from Pennsylvania, the Potomac River and, famously, the B&O Railroad and the C&O Canal.
3. First called Berlin, the town became Brunswick in 1890.
4. The competing B&O Railroad and
the C&O Canal both arrived in Berlin the same year—1834—in their westward construction.
5. Patsy Cline was born in Winchester, Virginia, but frequented Brunswick,
especially early in her career, and sang at county fairs and at the moose lodge in town, where she met her first husband. Cline, along with Jimmy Dean, Guy Lombardo and others performed in the Brunswick Fire Hall.
6. Beans in the Belfry is a church that
was converted into a coffeehouse, complete with stained-glass windows and a pulpit that now serves as the front counter. It has become the go-to place in town for coffee and live music.
7. There is a stream in town (Martin’s Creek, or Owens Creek) that actually flows under several buildings downtown—under the City Hall parking lot, Square Corner Park and the first block of East Potomac Street.
8. The Old Berlin Cemetery, the oldest graveyard in Brunswick, began in the late 1700s. When it fell into a period of neglect during the mid-20th century, kids played baseball there, using tomb-

stones as bases. It has since been rehabilitated and is owned by the city.
9. A perpetuated legend is that some-
time in the late 1880s, a poor farmer (possibly more than one) came to Berlin looking for land near the river to settle on. He was sold what was then the Potomac Farm. It later turned out that this man in poor farmer’s clothing was an executive of the B&O. Real estate prices quadrupled after that.
10. The C&O Canal spans 184.5 miles. Brunswick is located at Lock #30 along it. The lock keeper’s house was razed when the new bridge was constructed in1955.
11. Brunswick once had a movie theater called the Imperial.
12. The World War II Army tank in the
center of East A Street was given to the city by the U.S. Department of Defense in 1946. The M-5 Stuart Tank replaced what had been a small urban park honoring www.GBACC.net

World War I veterans with a WWI Howitzer Cannon onsite, after the cannon was donated to a WWII scrap drive.
13. General McClellan and General
Meade had their headquarters in Berlin for a short time as they pursued General Lee into Virginia following Antietam and Gettysburg. More than 100,000 men crossed into the South over the pontoon bridges at Berlin.
14. As the railroad needed room for
expansion, the three-story Hotel Brunswick was moved from its location beside the railroad tracks to its current location on North Maryland Avenue.
15. The town celebrates a Scottish
First Footing—a tradition with roots in Scottish folklore, each New Year’s Eve in Square Corner Park, when bagpipers and drummers play until midnight, then bless the town and everyone in attendance.
16. There have been three bridges

over the river at Brunswick: a covered bridge, built in 1858 and burned by the Confederate army in 1861; an iron bridge, built in 1893 but severely damaged in the flood of 1936; and the current concrete bridge, constructed in 1955.
24. The “WB” in WB tower does not
stand for westbound, as many suppose. WB are simply the call letters that were assigned to that particular station.

28. On Aug. 9, 1785, George Washington

The newest Façade and Interior Improvement grant round was scheduled to open in the beginning of May 2021. “Buy Local, Buy Brunswick” Gift Cards. This program makes it easy to purchase a single gift card for all participating downtown merchants. Even better, it launched with grant-based matching funds for extra purchasing power. Visit app.yiftee.com/gift-card/ brunswick to purchase your own card. Brunswick Farmers Market. This producer-only market combines entertainment, artisan crafts and farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, cheeses, baked goods and wine from local makers and growers. Visit it the second and fourth Fridays of the month from May through September. Public Art & Green Spaces. BMS has brought new life to downtown Brunswick’s physical appearance, including murals in Square Corner Park and on the Horine building, sculpture, and landscaping. It also sponsors an annual Cleanup Day In the beginning of May each year. Historical Preservation. From installing photographs in storefronts to create an “outdoor museum” to writing and publishing a walking tour brochure, BMS celebrates Brunswick’s unique history as a transportation hub and its legacy as a turn-of-the-19th-century railroad boomtown. For a fun way to learn a little Brunswick history

Facts are not free. Anyone can spout off on social media. Anyone can post their personal hot take on the issue of the day, free of facts, free of anything but their own opinion and bias. Real news is different. Real news comes from experienced journalists who put aside their assumptions and talk to people on all sides of an issue. Real news is hard. When you work for an organization devoted to real journalism, you are challenged daily by your editors. Hot takes don’t cut it—you have to do the work. That means talking to experts, mastering the issues, confirming every fact. Real news rocks the boat. Sometimes, people don’t want you looking into what’s going on. They hide information. They clam up. They refuse to release documents. They even sue you. Real news organizations fight back. Real news is not free. If we are going to work together to move Frederick forward, we need facts—and we need professional journalists to cover the news. At The Frederick News-Post, that’s what we do. And we need your support, now more than ever. Join us as a subscribing member today at FrederickNewsPost.com/subscribe.
