WELCOME TO THURMONT

Thurmont has four distinct seasons, with fall being the most colorful. Fall offers many opportu nities to enjoy the brilliant colors that blanket our mountains, neighborhoods, and orchards. While taking in this Fall spectacle I invite you to partake of Thurmont’s amazing history, outdoor activities, wonderful B&B accommodations, and our growing restaurant, winery, and brewery scene.

The Thurmont area is home to three of Maryland’s historic cover bridges. The Roddy Road, Loys Station, and Utica Mills covered bridges offer a chance to step back in time and experience the sights and sounds of crossing a wooden bridge. Each bridge has its own distinct style and offers great photo opportu nities, with picnic and park facilities at Roddy Road and Loys ThurmontStation.ishome to two amazing and awardwinning wineries. Catoctin Breeze Vineyard is located just north of Thurmont on Roddy Road and offers great weekend tastings and entertainment. Springfield Manor Winery-Distillery-Brewery is located off of Rte 15 south of Thurmont, offering warm rooms in a refined inn on a winery estate with casual dining and complimentary alcohol tastings.

Fall means fresh local fruit and produce! Our orchards offer an amazing selection of fruit just picked from the tree. Catoctin Mountain Orchard is just north of Thurmont and offers pick-your-own

fruit as well as baskets full of fresh fruit, baked goods, and assorted jams, and canned items. Pryor’s Orchard is nestled at the foot of Catoctin Mountain off Pryor Road. They have amazing peaches, apples, nectarines, berries, and corn! Chestnut Hill Farm and Market is on Stottlemyer Road at Foxville, right at the top of the mountain. The market offers ‘From our fields to your table’ fruit and vegetables grown on their 20-acre farm. Scenic View Orchard is lo cated north of Thurmont on Rte 550. Their market offers fresh apples, peaches, vegetables, and other wonderful items. The name Scenic View does not begin to describe the amazing scenery in the Lantz and Sabillasville valley. Explore our orchards and markets for some of the best local grown fruits and vegetables!Iwantto leave you with one thought, what could be tastier than a plateful of Uncle Dirty’s fresh BBQ, brisket, amazing burgers, and an amazing selection of beer? Stop at Bollinger’s Restaurant on Church Street and enjoy the best BBQ and Brisket available, period. Uncle Dirty’s Brewery will soon be brewing up a selection of micro beers, be sure to stop in for a pint or two. I recommend the BBQ Chili as a starter, you can’t go wrong with that.

We living in an amazing area and we invite you to join us for an afternoon or a weekend of small-town hospitality.

WELCOME TO EMMITSBURG

Welcome to Emmitsburg! With roots deep into pre-Revolutionary War times, we are indeed blessed, for history has been kind and generous to us. From the place where master craftsman John Armstrong made his signature Kentucky Long Rifles at the turn of the nineteenth century, and our Main Street ac commodated a century of westward bound surges of frontier bound settlers; to the place where thousands of Union soldiers encamped and were nourished by the Daughters of Charity before moving on to Gettysburg, and for many, to be nursed by those same Sisters after the battle.

In addition to our town being recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, it is home to the most visited firehouse in the country Vigilant Hose Company and the U.S. Fire Academy, and commonly referred to as “Fire Town USA”.

In 2017 Emmitsburg was the first government entity to win the State of Maryland Green Registry “Sustainability Leader shipToday,Award”.not to unlike in the past, residents go about their “day to days” amidst their daily scurries and interactions at restaurants, three museums and four archives, the world’s most visited fire house, the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine and Basilica, the Homeland Security/Fire Academy facility, the Fall en Firefighters Memorial, the Grotto of Lourdes and Mount St. Mary’s University hosting over 400,000 visitors a year. All cylinders running 24/7/365. Not surprisingly, last year Emmitsburg was recognized as being one of the top ten most beautiful small towns in Maryland.

It does not stop there. We are also known as “Green town”, one of the first municipalities in the country whose town accounts are 95% reliant on renewable solar energy. It is left to wonder what those who formed our history would say to their town being a regional leader in the use of renewable energy. What we did nine years ago is where most of the country hopes to go. An electric car, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, to even a solar powered algae control at the town lake. But they would rec ognize a quiet town idyllically set amid a natural

LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THESE EXCLUSIVE PROPERTIES

Historic overnight stays

The Forgeman’s House has been beauti fully and accurately restored by the Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. (CFHS). It was built during the winter of 1820-1821 to house workers at the Catoctin Furnace and is in the heart of the historic village. All revenue from overnight stays is used by the historical soci ety to restore and maintain the historic struc tures in the village.

The Forgeman’s House is not a typical over night destination. While it has a lovely mod ern bathroom with a shower, a gas fireplace, and the kitchen even boasts a dishwasher, as soon as you walk through the doorway and leave the modern amenities, you enter an 1820 home. The antique furniture and handmade reproductions are not overstuffed (or stuffed at all); and traditional roped beds (complete with modern mattresses!) will lull you to sleep…as you repeat the phrase “sleep tight and don’t let the bedbugs bite”. We will make sure your bed ropes are tight, but the experience of sleeping on a rope bed is one you and everyone in your group will remember.

Prior to restoration, archaeologists recov ered more than 30,000 artifacts from beneath the floorboards of the structure. These every day treasures tell the stories of families who lived here: children playing marbles, a cob bler mending shoes, a seamstress sewing the

latest pleated and puffed sleeve, someone using the first strike-a-light matches (Weller matches from nearby Thurmont) to light the fire. A “below the floorboards” exhibit case allows you to see what archaeologists found during excavations.

A testament to the frugality of the resi dents was also found during above ground archaeology when more than 100 pieces of historic clothing were found stuffed into the eaves and soffit of the house. As the furnace harvested the trees off the mountain to make charcoal, the price of wood purchased from the furnace owners was more than the cost of rent. One oral history recorded in the 1970s recounts a memory of the (once) young boy waking up with snow on his quilt in the up stairs

Gamesbedroom.andtoys in the house are reproduc tions of those played by children in earlier times. Their presence was found during the ar chaeological excavations. A huge, fenced back yard welcomes outdoor games.

The Forgeman’s House is a unique historic stay, and we welcome you to experience it. But do leave your 21st century ideas of com fort at home…and step back in time.

TROLLEY TRAIL Fall 2022

The Thurmont Trolley Trail/H&F Trolley Trail runs on the old H&F Railway align ment in Thurmont. There was an electric trolley system that ran through Frederick County from 1896 to 1954. After passenger service stopped, the railway maintained an electric freight line from Frederick to Thurmont until 1961. The H&F Trolley Trail Association (HFTTA) is working with Thurmont and Frederick County to extend the trail through Thurmont, south to Frederick and north to Emmitsburg. When completed this 21-mile trail will be a great asset to the citizens of Frederick County, the residents of the towns and communities it runs through and will attract more visitors to the area who will come to ride or walk the trail and enjoy all the other amenities, attractions, restaurants, and businesses our county has to offer.

The trail is currently about 1.1 miles and runs through the heart of Thurmont.

The Thurmont Trolley Trail continues to be extended.

Enjoy the Thurmont Trolley Trail every season.

“Old #5”, a freight car from the H&F sits at the trailheads on East Main Street, right next to the old power generation building that generated electricity for the trolleys. This is also the location of the latest trail extension that runs through the Guardian Hose Company Carnival Grounds. The extension through the Carnival Grounds is a stone dust trail and connects Boundary Avenue to East Main Street.

The arrival of Fall and Winter does not mean the end of trail enjoyment as you can enjoy the Trolley Trail all year long. A brisk walk or ride in Fall and Winter is very exhilarating. All along the trail, the leaves will turn their beautiful fall colors and there are several spots along the trail that give you a magnificent view of the fall foliage in the Catoctin Mountains. When Winter arrives, there is nothing like a walk along the trail on a snowy day, everything is quiet except for the songs of birds and the babbling of Big Hunting Creek. When the temperature drops and ice forms along the edges of Big Hunting, you can stand on one of the bridges that cross the creek and watch the cold-water pass by as the ice tries to grab it and add it to its icy formations.

After one of these Fall or Winter walks, you can go to one of the great restaurants in town and get a warm meal and a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate to warm you back up.

Even though we love the trail all year long, our organization is looking for ward to the Spring as we prepare to extend the trail North. The Maryland Midland railroad tracks, which cross Church Street and Carroll Street, will cause the trail to run “on-street” for a time, but this is common on trails that run through cities and towns. The trail will run north from Boundary Avenue to the trail and sidewalk system of two recently approved developments off Emmitsburg Road. The trail connection through the Mechanicstown LLC property will connect the trail all the way to Radio Lane, just down the street from Eyler Park. The HFTA is also planning for extensions south so we can connect the trail to the Catoctin Furnace. The organization hopes to have more news about this section early next year.

See you on the trail!

Take a walk or run on the Thurmont Trolley Trail. Extension at the Thurmont Carnival Ground.

CHESTNUT HILLS FARM & MARKET

Catoctin Mountain Orchard be gan as a small retail farm market in 1948 when Harry Black worked for owner, Ira Kelbaugh. 70% of the 100 acres of Apple and Peaches were sold to truckers and the wholesale mar kets in Baltimore and Washington area. Harry and Helen Black pur chased the farm from Mr. Kelbaugh in 1961 and built several additions to the open-air retail market. In 1983, the Black family decided to close up the open-air market and build a 50’x50’ addition with heat and air conditioning with a blacktop park ing lot for customers. In addition, Catoctin Mountain Orchard, from the beginning, has always incorpo rated Best Management Practices from trickle irrigation which allows for increased growth while using less water and much less power, to Integrated Pest Management which allows the “good bugs” to control the “bad bugs” thus reducing the use of pesticides, to composting leaves, grass and woodchips.

Every generation has brought new varieties of fruit to the market along with jarred products including jams, preserves, honey, and maple syrup just to name a few. The inventory and variety of products has grown tremendously over the decades including a bakery that produces

homemade fruit breads and fruit pies baked daily, and ready to eat. Also available are those same home made pies that are frozen, and you take and bake it yourself which is very popular for the holiday season. Just a note, as you walk through the front door, the smell of those pies baking will make it very difficult not leave without one.

Today, the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gen eration of the Harry Black Family work very hard to bring you the safest, best tasting Fruit, Berries & Vegetables that can be grown on their rich soils that we strive to improve and protect for genera tions to come!

Nestled in the Catoctin Moun tains and close to Camp David, Chestnut Hill Farm and Market LLC is a sixth-generation family run farm that has recently diversi fied to bring fresh produce, “From Our Fields, to Your Table.” With over 20 acres devoted to fruit and veg etable produce, they produce over 60 different varieties of produce in 2022. Chestnut Hills Farm & Market products are sold at various Farmers Markets throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia. You can always spot Chestnut Hills Farm & Market quickly at the Thurmont Main Street Farm ers Market as their picture-perfect large display is always chocked full of their homegrown colorful fruits and vegetables. Their stand will grab your attention instantly!

OF OUR ORCHARD TRAIL:

SCENICORCHARDVIEW

Pryor’s Orchard has been a family operation for three gen erations since 1905. Slowly, they transformed from a dairy farm to orchards with homegrown fruits, vegetables, and produce, special izing in cherries, plums, apricots, pears, peaches, blueberries, apples, and nectarines. Over the years mak ing many upgrades have been made to better the quality of their fruits to accommodate customers. Pryor’s Orchard is located in the Catoctin Mountains away from the hustle and bustle offering very quiet and peaceful surroundings with many shade trees surrounding the market place. Pryor’s market still exists in the original barn built with wooden pin construction dating back to 1940. Nearly all of their farm labor is

performed by owners and manag ers with great part time employees in the summer and fall, all of who are friends and relatives. Take the road less traveled and you will find Pryor’s Orchard a few minutes off of Route 15. Be sure to check their website for in season fruits.

Scenic View Orchards began their operation in the mid 1800’s with pri marily a hay and grain operation. Through the years different crops were raised based on product de mand and to allow for proper soil management practices. The farm has remained family owned and oper ated for the past seven generations.

Pryor’s Orchard: 13841B Pryor Rd., Thurmont, MD 301-271-2693

Over the past thirty years, they have expanded their operation to include fruit trees, berries, and veg etables. Scenic View Orchard started selling produce from a picnic table by Betty Calimer, the matriarch of the current farm family. Today, Scenic View Orchard sells their home grown produce, fruits, vegetables, and jarred products that are guaranteed fresh from the farm!

Scenic View Orchard strives to make your fruit and vegetable buying

experience the best part of your week. Whether you stop at their roadside market in Sabillasville, or one of the farmers markets they attend, they strive to provide the freshest produce available. There are currently three generations of their seven-generation farm working today. You will also find Scenic View Orchard at a few farmers markets in Frederick and Washington counties. Take a beau tiful drive through the mountains and stop to in to see them this fall daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Thurmont is easily identified because of our incredible parks for hiking, camping, swimming, and fishing at Catoctin Mountain Park and Cunningham Falls State Park. Oh, and let’s not forget the highest cascading waterfall in the State of Maryland is also at Cunningham Falls State Park! Everyone knows Thurmont’s outdoor recreation is paramount, but what I bet you don’t know, is that Thurmont has three award-winning wineries. For wine lovers and those looking for a relaxing vineyard experience, what could possibly be better than planning a trip to visit all three of Thurmont’s vineyards on a fall day, and dining in one our locally owned restaurants? Ok, there may be something that could possibly beat that trip, returning to

the wineries on a cold winters day to enjoy the vineyards fruits of labor inside their cozy tasting rooms in the warmth, or outside at a fire pit at one of the wineries. I did forget to mention that one of wineries is also home to a distillery and a brewery. Springfield Manor is the only venue in the state of Maryland that grows and processes all ingredients at one location for not only their wines, but for their spirits and beer as well. These wineries not only produce and serve some of the best wines in the state, but each location provides a unique ambiance with scenic views that will have you capturing many photos while enjoying their exceptional wines. Just a side note, I like to call them Wineyards because we are so fortunate to have these amazing wineries in our back yard!

HERE TO STAY:

A variety of animals for kids to interact with.

A new farm adventure is coming this September! A cherished, local favorite is returning this fall with a new name and fresh look! Magnolia Meadow Farms is the perfect place to spend a day on a family-owned farm where there is something for everyone. In a time where most farmland is being developed, they are proud to be keeping this farm as a real working farm for crops, hay, and cattle, but also as a place where families and friends can create lasting memories.

Magnolia Meadow Farms is home to Maryland’s Largest Corn Maze with over 5 miles of trails, plus over 20 other fun activities for all ages! Pick-your-own sunflowers, cut flowers, and pumpkins from a diverse variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. With the paths and photo ops placed throughout the fields, they also make a great backdrop for family photos! Take a hayride out to the fields and see the farm operation along the way, or simply take a quick walk. The choice is yours!

Enjoy a hot and delicious meal from their Concessions, offering farm fresh favorites with locally sourced ingredients. The beef is from their very own herd of cattle! They have partnered with their sister store, The Farmhouse Exchange, to bring some of their favorites to the farm, and also Gateway Candyland to bring some sweet treats! You can also snack on Freshly Made Apple Cider Donuts, Freshly Made Kettle Corn, and sip from a tall jar of Freshly Squeezed Lemonade!

In the Market, pick up some locally made products like goat milk soap: made from the milk of the goats in the Farm Animal Interactions, courtesy of Lind Family Farm. There is also handmade pottery, hand painted decor, Magnolia Meadow Farms t-shirts and sweatshirts, and of course, plenty of pumpkins, sunflowers, and cut flowers!

Another new and exciting addition this year is a partnership with local brewery, Idiom Brewing Co. They will be brewing a special pumpkin beer with the pumpkins grown right on Magnolia Meadow Farms, all hand-picked by the staff from both businesses! The beer will be offered throughout the fall season on the farm along with local wine in the private campfires area.

The farm also makes a great place for birthday parties, family occasions, and company outings. You can host a party or gathering in one of their Party Corrals, and share stories and roast s’mores around a Private Campfire! There is live music at the farm throughout

the season every Friday and Saturday evening, and Saturday and Sunday afternoon!

From transformer sculptures made out of real car parts to a handbuilt giant teepee, the farm has become a landmark for families and friends across Maryland, D.C., Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia. Even with these new and exciting additions, Magno lia Meadow Farms remains a friendly, local corn maze, sunflower field, and pumpkin patch! A lot of what families know and love will be sticking around! The farm will be opening their gates back up to our community for fun, food, and education beginning September 16th to October 30th, 2022. Open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and a few select weekdays. Be sure to follow them across social media and subscribe to their email list to be up-to-date on all they have to offer. see a new generation of family running the operation and serving up their homecooked meals which also made it a popular breakfast stop. They continued to add new items to the menu to keep the customers happy and returning to their restaurant that had become a local icon for eating a good meal.

Fast forward to 2007, they would purchase a property adjacent to the Thurmont Plaza Shopping Center, and that would become the new home for the restaurant that several generations that built a foundation for quality, home cooking, and good service. Josh’s mom Donna Bollinger has been preparing all types of food for decades, and her daughter Car rie has been serving for years at Bollinger’s, and of course Donna’s son Josh had the vision to take the restaurant to a new level expanding the menu along with other changes. During this time, Josh decided to leave his job in the HVAC industry, and joined the restaurant fulltime adding his culinary touches and talents to the menu. For those of you who have never had one of Josh’s brisket or barbecue sandwiches, you do not know what you are missing. They are truly the best in Frederick County!

Up until this point, Bollinger’s did not sell alcohol beverages, so taking the restaurant to yet another level to accommodate customer requests,

Bollinger Restaurant family has worked very hard constantly upgrading and keeping up with customer demands. Every generation has benefited from those fruits of labors and kept improving the food and ambience. In 2020, Josh would apply for a full liquor license now offering beer, wine and liquor along with wine slushies.

Remember how I said Josh had an appetite for improving his chef skills and continuously learning new techniques and dishes? Well, Josh had another passion along the way; brewing beer! Two and half years ago Josh began brewing beer, and he smiles when he says, “I have a passion for craft beer. It is chefing in a whole new way.” Josh also commented, “Brew ing craft beer is creating recipes, cooking the brew, and experimenting with the unlimited number of flavors I can create. After cooking behind the grill for fifteen years, it was time to expand my love for creating beer and pairing it with my bbq & brisket and other foods” So, what is the newest addition to Bollinger’s Restaurant from The Josh Generation? Brewed beer right on the premises of Bollinger’s Restaurant. It is most certainly a big day for not only Josh, but for Thurmont as well because Josh will have the very first brewery in an untapped Northern Frederick County market! What will he call his brew? Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works!

few. In addition to those new items, don’t forget about those specialty mouthwatering burgers they are serving up that will be soon served with a variety of Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works he will be pouring come this October. Josh gives accolades to his sister Carrie who has supported this vision for Bollinger’s and his passion for brewing beer. “Without my sister Carrie taking over some of the chefing in the kitchen, I would not have been able to pursue my dream of a brewery at Bollinger’s. Her taking over some of my cooking and kitchen duties has freed me up to be able to research, experiment, and bring the best brewed beer possible with Uncle Dirty’ s Brew Works and Bbq.” Josh continued to say, “Carrie and my mom 100% support this vision and with the three of us and our staff, it has become a reality.” The family legacy continues.

A side note, we asked Josh why he is called Uncle Dirty? He told us, “It goes back to my school days and that became my nickname. Then when my niece was younger and leaning to talk, she called me Uncle Dirty and the name stuck.” Not only did the name stick, but so will those savory barbecued ribs I forgot mention earlier. Soon you will be able to enjoy those ribs with one of the many crafted Uncle Dirty’s brews made right on the premises. Oh, and guess what the name of the barbecue sauce is that Josh crafted and uses on his ribs? Yep, Uncle Dirty’s BBQ sauce.

Bollinger’s continues to bring good food, service and innovation to their customers, spanning seventy-four years with every generation working hard to achieve success and longevity in the community and to visitors. The Joshua Generation is here, and Josh is carrying on the tradition along with his family and staff. Congratula tions to Josh and the Bollinger family on a major achievement and bringing the first brewery to Thurmont. October will bring Uncle Dirty’s Brew Works on premise to accent his bar becue that is the best around along with many of their popular menu’s items, and dinner specials they are famous for. On a side note, we did ask Josh what his favorite beer was? “I don’t have a favorite beer, but stout is my favorite type of beer.” Check it out this October to find your favorite brew at

HAPPY 1ST ANNIVERSARY TO THE THURMONT SKATEPARK!

Though the Thurmont Skatepark had its official grand opening last November, the excitement and progress have continued over this past year. What began as a group of teens wanting a place to skate in town, has become a great asset to Thurmont and an attraction for families, teens and adults, often enjoying the park together. Along with about a dozen other skaters, Cooper, 13, came to skate after school. He praised the Thurmont Skatepark saying, “I love it. It’s nice and smooth. It’s very open. I love to skate it.”

A typical crowd at the skatepark covers a wide range of ages, from young kids learning to skate to adults who have been skat ing since their own teenage years. Christopher Shewbrigde brings his family to the park regularly and explained, “the bond that skateboarding has created within our family is something like no other, and Thurmont Skatepark is one of our favorite places to do what we love most.” Enthusiasm from the community has also continued. Short winter days made it difficult for skaters to get much time at the park after school or work before it got too dark to skate safely.

In April, G&S Electric generously donated and installed lights on poles that had been donated by Winsupply. With the lighting

in place, the skatepark became a great evening attraction as well and is now open until 10pm each night.

These longer hours have also helped the skatepark become a destination for people outside of Thurmont looking for a place to skate. Many skaters drive into town just for the skatepark, with one recently mentioning that he had never heard of Thumont before the skatepark was built. Ben Sturn of Mt. Airy declared, “Best skatepark in Maryland. People from all over come here.”

The next improvement soon followed as the Town of Thurmont built a covered pavilion over the picnic tables. This shady spot is perfect for skaters taking a break or parents watching their kids enjoy the skatepark. Benches donated by Catoctin Colorfest provide another great spot to view the park from above. A final piece of the park came together in July with the completion of a paved pathway connecting the skatepark to the East End Play ground on one side and the Main Street sidewalk on the other. Now, folks can walk, bike, skate or push a stroller right up to the skatepark. It invites people who may not have come by before to walk up and take a look. When they do, they will find a wide mix of people there to skate and enjoy the positive energy generated by community coming together.

In 2014 the town of Thurmont embarked on a campaign to raise aware ness for breast cancer, but also raise funds for an organization in Frederick County. After a search for an organization to work with was found, it would be decided hands down that The Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund would be thatInorganization.Octoberof2014

the Town of Thurmont would move forward to launch a breast cancer fund raiser and would name this campaign, Gateway To The Cure. Thurmont’s tagline and logo is, “Thurmont, Gateway To The Moun tains” so it only made sense to replace the word mountain with the word “hope” of a cure one day. In October, the town began selling Pink Light Bulbs that were supplied by local business Catoctin Lighting, and sold at the Town Office, Cousins Ace Hardware, and Hobbs Hardware. The Mayor and Commissioners asked residents to purchase a pink lightbulb and turn their pink on every evening in the month of October from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Selling pink light bulbs would accomplish both goals: raise awareness and collect donations. The second promotion in 2014 for the month of October would be to include the business community. Businesses were asked to participate in a month-long campaign by offering a special for the month and donate the proceeds, or make a monetary contribution. Promotions were very creative. One example of a promotion is Gateway Liquors contributing $1 for every pink bottle of wine sold in the month of October. The proceeds for the first year of Gateway To The Cure would bring a total of $4,500.00. How many light bulbs were sold the first year you may ask? The bulbs came in a case of 124, and Chief Administrative Officer Jim Humerick would purchase one case of 124 bulbs making the statement, “What we don’t sell this year, we can save for next year.” That is still hilarious because the number of Pink bulbs sold in 2014 were 1,385! Needless to say, Catoctin Lighting’s phone was lit up with continuous calls for more bulbs!

In 2015, a new event would enter Gateway To The Cure. This event was a 5K fun run/walk organized by CYA Track Coach John Steiner. The 5K

would be called the Gateway To The Cure Covered Bridge 5K reflective of the course that takes you through Roddy Road Covered Bridge. Also, in 2018 a golf tournament would be added to the list of events which is organized by volunteer Missy Grimes. Another event would be added in 2019 which is “Pumpkins for Pink” a pink pumpkin decorating contest.

The month-long October campaign involving our business community remains the heart and soul of our Gateway To The Cure Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of the Thurmont business community, residents, and all who purchased Gateway To The Cure merchandise, and those who came out to participate in our events, the Town of Thurmont has contributed $117,000.00 to The Hurwitz Breast Cancer Fund that benefits Frederick Health since 2014.

Our journey continues in 2022, and if you would like to make a donation to the 2022 Gateway To The Cure, you may mail a check to made out to the Town of Thurmont, 11 Water Street, Thurmont, MD 21788.

Catoctin Colorfest began in 1963 with what started as a nature walk but quickly evolved into a juried arts and crafts festival featuring 300 well-known and respected artisans from across the United States. Catoctin

Colorfest has been recognized in Sunshine Artists Magazine, ranked in the top 35 festivals in the US, and is one of the largest on the East Coast. Catoctin Colorfest, Inc. is led by President Carol Robertson. Catoctin Colorfest, Inc. is a non-profit organization and fees from the vendor spaces are returned throughout the town over the year in the form of high school scholarships, Christmas decorations that are donated to the Town of Thurmont, and monetary donations to the Thurmont Food Bank. These are just a few of the gifts Catoctin

SETON CENTER STORE IS FULL OF INCREDIBLEFINDS

The Seton Family Store takes these words to heart, putting them to work in building a stronger, more hopeful community in northern Frederick County. As part of the Seton Center, the Seton Family Store strives to provide high-quality new and sec ondhand merchandise at an affordable value. Patrons can find a variety of clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family, as well as furniture, games, crafts, home décor, housewares, and much more. You never know what treasures you might find; recent offerings include vintage Noritake dishware, collectible baseball cards, brand-new backpacks for school, and elegant evening dresses.

But what makes the Seton Family Store different from any other thrift shop? Why should people shop there or donate their unwanted goods to the Seton Family Store instead of others?

Because every purchase at the Seton Family Store changes lives—and that’s not simply hyperbole.

Unlike corporate thrift stores such as Goodwill or Salvation Army, pro ceeds from the Seton Family Store directly benefit the Seton Outreach Center. There is no CEO or Executive Board to receive salary or bonuses. As a sponsored work of the Daughters of Charity, the profits raised by the Seton Family Store help keep the Outreach operational and able to meet the needs of the community with programs such as DePaul Dental and Getting Ahead, as well as housing and utility assistance.

When you simplify your life and choose to donate your clean, sellable, unwanted items to Seton Family Store, you truly are changing lives by helping us to help others live more hopefully and sustainably!

There are special discounts for Community Heroes (healthcare workers, first responders, military, and postal employees), Mount St. Mary’s students and seminarians, and Senior Citizens. And there are special promotions each week, such as Color of the Week, Item of the Week, and Flashback Friday, all of which provide great opportunities to save.

Christmastime is the season when Seton Family Store really shines! Holiday-themed décor and gifts may be found year-round; however, begin ning in October and lasting through December, the shelves are usually stocked with almost everything you need to have a Merry Christmas. Because of the generosity of our donors, there are often new-with-tags items that can be proudly gifted without needing to empty your wal let. The store also sponsors a Giving Tree, with donated items going to a local social service agency such as Heartly House or Mountain Manor, and collects Letters to Santa, which Santa himself answers!

Seton Family Store is open for shopping Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Donations are generally accepted

Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Because we are a small operation, volunteers are always welcome and appreciated! You can find out more at SetonCenter.org/ seton-family-store or by calling 301.447.6102 extension 15.

“Live simply so that others may simply live.” – St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, foundress of the Daughters of Charity.

Think of The seton Family Store when you are looking to donate gently used clothing, housewares, decor, or furniture.
Miss a week-miss a lot! Many treasures to be found every week.
EMMITSBURG

When visitors ask for dining recommendations in Emmitsburg, it is the easiest question to answer. Emmitsburg has always been known for its great selection of dining options, and it has only gotten better over the years.

The Carriage House, The Ott House, and The Palm’s Restaurant are three establishments that have existed for over 50 years. All three continue to serve wide se lections of delicious menu items at reasonable prices.

Over the years, other restaurants were opened with the addition of Carleo’s Italian Pizza, Chubby’s

BBQ, Rube’s Crab Shack, and Tuscany’s Pizzeria. Their names speak for themselves as for their menu specialties.

If you’re looking for something you can grab quickly, we have that too. China Wok, Dunkin, McDonald’s, and Subway are all located off Silo Hill Road. If you’re looking for a healthy drink or snack, visit Mason Dixon Mixin. To satisfy your sweet tooth or for a delicious dessert, visit Ripleigh’s Creamery on Main Street.

For a small community, we have extensive dining options, and we are proud that they are all located in Emmitsburg. Hotel Transfers, 4nights accommodations at the fabulous Excalibur Hotel &Casino.
