DESIGN AN AD IS A PROGRAM WHERE WE PAIR LOCAL BUSINESSES WITH LOCAL MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOMS THROUGHOUT FREDERICK COUNTY to create ads for the advertisers. Students are challenged to use their creativity, logic and critical thinking skills to design a winning ad, while local business owners demonstrate their commitment to the education of Frederick County students by purchasing ad space for which the students design an advertisement.

Through the competition, students learn the importance of advertising for businesses and for newspapers. Advertising is especially important to newspapers as it typically accounts for 75 to 85 percent of the newspaper’s revenue. The students learn the aspects of designing an effective ad by clearly stating a message, using persuasive writing and imagery, and tying a concept or idea together through visual composition. They learn about deadlines and elements of a good ad.
