Design An Ad 2024

DESIGN AN AD IS A PROGRAM WHERE WE PAIR LOCAL BUSINESSES WITH LOCAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOMS THROUGHOUT FREDERICK COUNTY to create ads for the advertisers. Students are challenged to use their creativity, logic and critical thinking skills to design a winning ad, while local business owners demonstrate their commitment to the education of Frederick County students by purchasing ad space for which the students design an advertisement.

Through the competition, students learn the importance of advertising for businesses and for newspapers. Advertising is especially important to newspapers as it typically accounts for 75 to 85 percent of the newspaper’s revenue. The students learn the aspects of designing an effective ad by clearly stating a message, using persuasive writing and imagery, and tying a concept or idea together through visual composition. They learn about deadlines and elements of a good ad.

BOREDOM BUSTERS SUMMER

Are you an animal lover?

Your community has more animalloving activities than you think! Here are seven ideas that will take your love for animals to the next level:

1. Go to a zoo, aquarium or pet store. From majestic mammals and creepy spiders to fascinating reptiles, colourful birds and beautiful butterflies, your local area has many unique places to get up close and personal with your favorite species.

2. Visit a farm. What a great way to learn about farm life and animal care. Many establishments even allow you to feed or pet various animals, like ducks, sheep, alpacas, chickens and other adorable creatures.

3. Observe wildlife. Go on a guided excursion to see bears or beavers in their natural habitat, meet seals and whales or snorkel with marine life. There’s a host of possibilities!

4. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Animal shelters are always looking for passionate people to help walk dogs, brush cats and play with these four-legged friends.

5. Relax in a cat cafe. Sip on a hot drink or enjoy a tasty treat in the company of adorable little furballs. What a unique way to relax and make new friends!

6. Go horseback riding. Horseback riding is a fantastic way to bond with these graceful animals. Plus, it’s a fun and exciting way to spend time outdoors.

7. Go hiking with your dog. Find out if there are any dog-friendly, on-leash trails you can explore with your lovable pet. You’ll both have a blast experiencing nature together.

You can have fun on a budget!

You don’t have to plan a trip overseas to have fun this summer. There are plenty of affordable activities you can do close to home. Here are a few brilliant ideas to help you plan a memorable summer vacation without breaking the bank:

• Visit a park offering a wide range of activities, like hiking, swimming, birdwatching and picnicking

• Go camping somewhere scenic or in your own backyard

• Cycle or skate along designated paths

• Find the best places to admire the sunset or the starry sky

• Check out daring and engaging street art

• Go to a drive-in movie or outdoor theatre

• Have fun at the beach playing volleyball or making sandcastles

• Spoil yourself with a sweet treat from a local ice cream shop

• Gather around a campfire and enjoy hotdogs or roasted marshmallows

• Take part in a community party or local festival

• Take a stroll downtown and stop off at places you’ve never been before

• (Re)discover your city or a nearby town by taking a guided tour

7 BOARD GAMES THAT FIT IN YOUR LUGGAGE

Board games can be the perfect way to have fun on rainy days or relax at a hotel while travelling. However, carrying bulky board games in your luggage can be challenging. Here are a few suggestions to help you travel light:

1. Bandido. Team up with your fellow players and use your cards to cleverly place tunnels that trap a prisoner in the middle of an escape attempt.

2. Dobble/Spot it! Sharpen your powers of observation and quickly spot the unique matching symbol between every two cards before anyone else. It’s simple but exciting!

3. Hanabi. Use other players’ clues to guess your cards and place them in the correct order to create beautiful fireworks without ever seeing your deck.

4. 6 nimmt/Take 6! Anticipate your opponent’s plays to avoid lining up the sixth card (in ascending order) and collecting bullheads. The player who collects the fewest bullheads wins.

5. Sushi Go! Assemble the highest-paying plate by selecting the best sushi cards as they’re passed from player to player. Be careful not to leave strong cards for your opponents.

6. Conspiracy: Abyss Universe. Recruit the most Powerful Lords while cleverly organizing your Senate Chamber to take control of the Oceanic Senat Assembly.

7. The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine. Set out to conquer space in this cooperative trick-taking game where communication is important but limited. Will you succeed in completing the 50 increasingly challenging missions?

3 reasons to visit your local ice cream shop this summer

The mercury’s rising, you’ve written your out-of-office reply for your vacation from work, and your favorite sunscreen is on sale tomorrow: holidays are just around the corner! If you enjoy gourmet tourism, you don’t have to get on a plane to discover new flavours. This summer, discover the pleasures of ice cream! Here are three reasons to visit your local ice cream shops.

What’s the difference between ice cream, gelato and sorbet?

Here’s what you need to know:

• Ice cream is made from heavy whipping cream. It contains a lot of air and can be kept at very cold temperatures.

• Gelato is made from milk. It’s less fatty and contains less air than ice cream. It’s also served warmer, giving it a soft yet dense texture.

• Sorbet is made exclusively from fruit and sugar and is generally quite light. Plus, it’s vegan!

• Frozen yogurt is made with yogurt. While it does contain a fair amount of sugar, it’s lower in fat than ice cream.

• Ice milk is quite sweet. It contains three to five per cent fat and has more protein and calcium than other frozen desserts.

Sounds tempting, doesn’t it?

3. A PLACE TO MEET AND TALK

When it’s time to turn off your email notifications, why not recharge your batteries by having face-to-face conversations? Try striking up a conversation with the customers at the ice cream shop. If you want to update your social media feed with pictures of your adventures, ask a friendly holidaymaker to take a photo of you with your decadent ice cream sundae. Sweets are a great way to break the ice!

Are you looking for a family activity that combines local shopping and fresh air? Try berry picking! Besides getting some outdoor exercise, you can also stock up on delicious fresh berries at an affordable price. It’s a win-win! Check out these handy tips to pick the tastiest berries this summer:

• Blueberries. Only pick blueberries that are firm, dark blue and mould-free.

• Haskaps. Look for haskaps that are purplish-blue, clean and firm. If they look sunburnt, don’t put them in your basket.

• Cherries. Pick the plumpest, shiniest fruit you see. Avoid those with signs of mould.

• Strawberries. Select firm strawberries with a bright, even red colour, regardless of size. Make sure they have all their leaves and haven’t started to shrivel.

• Raspberries. Make sure you pick only ripe, fragrant berries. Avoid those that don’t easily come off the bush. If you have to tug on them, they’re not ready.

• Blackberries. Look for full, fleshy berries that are deep black and shiny. If they’re ripe, they should feel soft to the touch.

Summer citrus salad

This refreshing salad is delicious and healthy. Why not enjoy it with friends on your patio or in the park?

INGREDIENTS (SERVINGS: 2)

• 1/4 cup pearl barley

• 1 pomegranate

• 4 cups arugula or spring mix

• 1 cup cooked chicken breast, roughly diced

• 1 orange, peeled and cut into thin slices

• 1 tablespoon crushed toasted almonds (for garnish)

DIRECTIONS

1.In a small saucepan, simmer the barley for 25 minutes or until tender. Drain and set aside to let cool.

2.Cut open the pomegranate and remove the seeds. Watch an online tutorial if necessary. Set aside.

3.Whisk together the ingredients for the dressing in a small bowl. Season to taste and set aside.

4.In a large dish or salad bowl, gently toss the lettuce, chicken, orange slices, barley and pomegranate seeds.

5.Add the dressing and serve in salad bowls. Garnish with crushed almonds.

Strawberry puff pastry SPECTACULARLY SIMPLE!

Are you looking for a delicious and eye-catching dessert that’s easy to make? Look no further!

INGREDIENTS (Servings: 6 to 8)

• 1 box of store-bought puff pastry, 25 centimetres x 25 centimetres

• 1 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread (Nutella style)

• 450 grams fresh strawberries, thinly sliced lengthwise

• A few mint leaves

• A small piece of chocolate

DIRECTIONS

1. Bake the puff pastry according to the package instructions. This is usually 20 minutes at 400 F on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let cool.

2. Gently smear the chocolate hazelnut spread over the pastry.

3. Arrange the strawberry slices on top of the spread.

4. Garnish with mint leaves and grate chocolate over the whole dessert.

Look at a photo in the sports section. Without reading the story, write down what is happening in the photo, what happened during the game and who won the game. Read the story. Were your predictions correct?

MATH

Race through the newspaper – you have five minutes! See how many numbers from 1-25 you can find. Circle each number as you find it.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Chart community crimes for one-week using reports and articles in the newspaper. Chart the type of crime, age of the criminal, location, etc.

SCIENCE

Find articles in the newspaper about areas that have experienced severe weather. Discuss how stories such as these can help us prepare for weather emergencies.

LIFE SKILLS

Find a recipe in the food section. Examine the recipe's ingredients to see if it includes enough of the nutrients necessary for a balanced diet. What other foods or recipes could you add to make a balanced meal?

CRITICAL THINKING

Choose one story from the front page of today's paper. Find the answers to these questions: Who? What? When? Where? Why? Note the organization of details in this story.

Which is the most important? Where is it found in the story. Does the headline highlight the most important fact? If not, where did the information for the headline appear in the story?

CHARACTER EDUCATION

Go through the newspaper and make a "survival vocabulary list" of words that a person would need to know to be a good responsible citizen in today's world. Be sure to list the legal terms you find that we assume all people understand.

SCHOOLING (ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE, HIGH)

Using the classified ads, find prices of cars, that are equal to, greater than, or less than $9,999.00; Using a ruler, figure out the percentage of space on a given page of ads, pictures, stories, headlines; Have a discussion of employment trends and demands in your community based on the help wanted section and any related articles.
