FREDERICK SAYS GOODBYE TO MOUNTAIN VIEW DINER

After 26 years on the Golden Mile, Mountain View Diner has permanently closed, taking with it the kind of place that quietly becomes part of people’s lives: after-church breakfasts, late-night meals, family dinners and coffee refills in familiar booths. In this week’s issue, S.D. Price writes a personal farewell to the diner and the many chapters of his own life that unfolded there. If you’ve ever had a place you assumed would simply always be there, his essay will probably hit home.

HEAR LOCAL VETERANS TELL THEIR OWN STORIES

The Frederick Military Museum of the 20th Century will bring the voices of local veterans to the Y Arts Center this fall through a temporary exhibition built around oral histories, photographs, maps, posters, uniforms and military artifacts. The exhibit opens with a gala at 2 p.m. Sept. 13 at the YMCA Ausherman Arts Center in downtown Frederick and remains on view through November. Seven veterans are highlighted, with firsthand accounts touching on World War I, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, life as a prisoner of war, Iwo Jima and the Korean War. Families of the featured veterans are expected at the opening, along with Frederick’s mayor. Museum president Priscilla Rall has spent years preserving these local stories while the nonprofit works toward establishing a permanent museum in Frederick.

IN THE STREETS IS THIS WEEKEND

Downtown Frederick belongs to pedestrians Sept. 12 as the annual In The Streets festival will take over Market Street and Carroll Creek with live music, food, artists, community groups and activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every year, it’s a time when the whole city comes together, when people meet for the first time or run into community neighbors they haven’t seen in years. 70 YEARS OF COMMUNITY TRADITION IN THURMONT

The Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show will celebrate its 70th year Sept. 11 to 13 at Catoctin High School, 14745 Sabillasville Road, Thurmont, with farm and home exhibits, livestock, food, music, children’s activities and some wonderfully old-school competitions, including horseshoe pitching, a kiddie pedal tractor pull and cross-cut log sawing. Goodbye to Mountain View Diner, a place that was always there

There are places you visit, and there are places that become part of your life without you ever really deciding they would.

For me, Mountain View Diner was the latter.

When Mountain View announced that it would permanently close after 26 years, I realized there may not be another business in Frederick that has been present through more stages of my life.

I have been going there for as long as I can remember.

As a child, Mountain View meant meals after church or mornings around my older brother’s high school football games. Back then, I obviously was not thinking about what the diner would eventually mean to me.

We always seemed to get to the hostess at just the right time, and occasionally we only had to wait a little while. Since it was never too full and we never had to find a second option, I never imagined a day when we simply could not go.

It was always there.

Then I got older, and somehow it kept finding its way into the next chapter.

When my family moved down the road to Hagerstown, Mountain View became an easy meeting place for me and my friends still in the neighborhood. It sat almost perfectly between the life I had left and the one I was trying to adjust to.

We could meet there, slide into a booth and, for a little while, it felt like nothing had really changed.

It became even more essential during our college years and later, as some of my favorite dates with the woman who is now my wife happened there.

Nothing extravagant. That was part of the beauty of it.

You did not have to make Mountain View into something it was not. You could just show up. Talk. Eat. Laugh.

Sit across from somebody you cared about and let the rest take care of itself.

As life got busier, it became familiar ground for my parents and me, too.

When my wife and I had friends or family visiting from out of town, Mountain View was one of the places we could bring them for a taste of everyday life here.

I had some of my first business meetings there. Some of my best creative ideas came while sitting in those booths overlooking Route 40, looking out at a stretch of town where, at different points in my life, it felt like everything I needed was right there.

And as a father, Mountain View became somewhere I could take my daughter and feel like it was just us for a while.

No distractions. No gimmicks. No flair. Nothing we had to turn into an experience.

It already was one.

Maybe that is why the closing feels so strange.

I never needed hindsight to know what Mountain View meant to me.

It was already one of my favorite restaurants, my favorite diner in Frederick and a place I recommended without thinking twice.

I just never pictured Frederick without it.

For 26 years, it kept meeting me wherever life was. The people sitting across from me changed. The reasons I came changed. I changed.

Mountain View stayed familiar.

And I know mine cannot be the only life it ran alongside. A place does not last 26 years without becoming

part of more stories than anyone could count.

That is what makes this feel bigger than losing a place to eat.

For some of us, Mountain View was part of the background of life here.

Not because it was forgettable, but because it was dependable. You knew where it was. You knew what it was.

You knew you could come back.

Until now.

So this is my goodbye, but I know it is not only mine.

To everyone who greeted us, cooked for us, kept the coffee coming and made those booths feel familiar, thank you.

And thank you, Mountain View.

You were always there.

Spyros Koliavasilis will carry the soul of Greece to New Market

For Spyros Koliavasilis, music is more than performance. It is a way to preserve a culture, connect people and share a piece of his homeland with the world.

Music entered Koliavasilis’ life when he was about 8 years old.

More than five decades later, the award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer continues to follow that same path, performing and teaching Greek and Mediterranean music while introducing audiences to traditions that have crossed generations and continents.

On Sept. 12, Koliavasilis will bring that mission to Hill Chapel in New Market with “The Soul of Greece: Songs of Vassilis Tsitsanis,” a 7 p.m. performance combining music, storytelling and history.

Koliavasilis will be joined by his protégé Nicholas Mitrione on bouzouki.

The program explores the life and work of Tsitsanis, one of the defining figures in Greek urban folk music, while introducing audiences to rebetiko, a tradition often described as the Greek blues.

For Koliavasilis, the program is about considerably more than performing a collection of songs.

“My intention is to make [the audience] have a pleasant experience, a transformational experience where they kind of experiment and they will discover more new tunes and how they can also be connected with [another country and its] songs.”

That desire to connect people through music has been a constant throughout Koliavasilis’ career.

His formal musical education began in childhood with classical training and wind instruments. As a young adult, he performed as a soloist and later became increasingly immersed in different musical traditions. His experiences with musicians in Romania and elsewhere eventually led him deeper into Greek music and the traditions that would become the focus of his career.

His relationship with Tsitsanis’ music is especially personal. Koliavasilis grew up hearing the composer’s songs, which remain familiar across generations of Greeks.

“This is the music that every Greek had contact and connection with,” Koliavasilis said.

Tsitsanis wrote hundreds of compositions, and his work reflected the world around him. Koliavasilis said the songs address virtually every aspect of

“It’s like the newspaper of that era,” he said.

That connection between music and everyday life is central to Koliavasilis’ understanding of rebetiko. He does not view the tradition simply as something preserved in a historical museum. Instead, he sees it as a living form of expression that continues to resonate because the emotions and experiences behind it remain familiar.

The Sept. 12 program follows Tsitsanis chronologically, moving through his early compositions, World War II, the German occupation of Greece and the postwar period. Koliavasilis selected the songs not simply for their historical importance but for their social and musical significance.

“I don’t want my concerts to be like workshops,” Koliavasilis said. “I want people to enjoy them and to bring as much as I can, a little bit of everything.”

Storytelling is an important part of that approach. Koliavasilis will provide context for the songs and explain the meaning behind selected lyrics, particularly for audience members who do not speak Greek.

“Once someone understands the background, they also get attached to them and they try to discover, understand and connect with the composition,” he said.

That connection can transport listeners beyond the concert hall.

“We see that the songs are journeys, so every song takes you to a journey,” Koliavasilis said.

His work as a teacher is built around that same philosophy. Through the Mediterranean Notes Music School in Maryland, he teaches students from across the country, ranging from children to adults. Many of his students are not Greek but are drawn to the music and culture.

Koliavasilis said he wants his students to understand more than the notes and instruments.

“I want them to understand the culture,” he said.

He also wants music to provide a place where people from different backgrounds can meet.

“I strongly believe that we need to

share and give the knowledge to the next generation,” he said.

His contributions to traditional music have earned him several state recognitions, including the 2025 Maryland Heritage Award, the state’s highest honor for traditional artists. He has also been recognized three times as a master artist of traditional Greek music through the Maryland State Arts Council’s Folklife Apprenticeship program and has performed at venues including the Library of Congress and the embassies of Greece and Cyprus.

The Maryland Heritage Award was particularly meaningful because Koliavasilis said he never expected such recognition when he came to the United States.

“It’s one of the biggest honors I have ever received in my life,” Koliavasilis said.

The award also reinforced his sense of responsibility.

“It’s a huge weight on my shoulders because I want to make sure that I will never disappoint the people that gave that to me,” he said.

That responsibility extends beyond Greek audiences. Koliavasilis describes himself as a citizen of the world and views his role as something larger than representing one musical tradition.

Ultimately, he said, his goal is to use music as a bridge between cultures.

“My mission is to be a cultural ambassador,” Koliavasilis said, “as much as I can through music, not in an embassy sort of way.”

That mission is reflected in what Koliavasilis hopes audiences take away from his performances. Technical excellence matters, but it is not the measure by which he ultimately judges his work.

“The biggest achievement I can have is seeing an audience member leave feeling that they have traveled somewhere through the music,” Koliavasilis said.

For Koliavasilis, that is the power of preserving an old song and presenting it to a new audience: The music may have been written decades ago, but its ability to create a connection remains.

And for one evening in New Market, he hopes to take his audience on that journey.

Memorial grounds are open from sunrise to sunset, and the Visitor Center is generally open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. For the 25th anniversary, artists will create chalk portraits honoring the 40 passengers and crew from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sept. 10, with the portraits remaining on display through Sept. 20. The Sept. 11 morning observance will run from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. near the Wall of Names, followed by an afternoon ceremony from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The Visitor Center will remain open until 7 p.m. Sept. 11 and 12. A luminaria ceremony will take place from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Wall of Names, followed by the Tower of Light tribute through midnight. The Visitor Center Complex stands beyond the groves and tells the story of the 40 passengers and crew members, their lives and the sorrowful events of the day in haunting detail.

The center includes exhibits, artifacts, a viewing window toward the crash site, a bookstore, the Flight Path Walkway and an overlook.

All the exhibits are well done and understated.

The most moving part of the Visitor Center, without a doubt, is the bank of phones where visitors can hear surviving recordings and messages connected with calls placed from Flight 93.

Thirteen passengers and crew members placed 37 calls between 9:28 and 10:03 a.m. Only a small number were recorded, but phone records and accounts from the people who received the calls helped authorities reconstruct what happened aboard the plane.

It makes you feel terribly insignificant and a bit of an interloper to hear these intensely personal and profoundly sad final messages. But listen you must.

No history book can do justice to what is learned through them.

The calls reported the hijacking and described the hijackers and their violent acts. Through conversations with people on the ground, passengers and crew also learned about the attacks on the twin towers and Pentagon.

Everyday Poetry For centuries, it seemed the Irish and English would never be able to live in peace. Yet peace did come, in long stages in the 20th century.

In 1921, partition separated Northern Ireland from the rest of the island, and the Irish Free State was established the following year. Then, in 1998, a 30-year period of unrest ended with the Good Friday Agreement, which established powersharing in Northern Ireland and strengthened cooperation between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Today, the former Free State, SHERYL MASSARO now the Republic of Ireland, maintains the Irish language alongside English and is part of the European Union, while Northern Ireland left the EU with the United Kingdom after Brexit.

I don’t know if there is any hope for such a working outcome between Israel and Palestine — or Jewish and Arab extremists wherever they are — but a two-state solution has been able to work adequately in the political/cultural world.

And it can work in nature as well.

An estuary, for example, is an ecosystem created by the mingling of two other ecosystems: fresh water and salt water. The water in estuaries might be brackish, but it is full of nutrients. Our Chesapeake Bay is one of the largest estuaries in the world.

On land, the Sahel in Africa, for example, is where the Sahara Desert and the tropical, greener savanna to its south form a belt of semiarid land.

Neither area loses its identity, yet organisms from each venture into the other’s territory for a look-see and maybe a stay.

Venture is what we and nature do — can’t help ourselves — and perhaps it’s how we evolve and adapt. What nature does not do is succumb to fear and hatred.

“Coming together” is how the Aborigines describe an estuary.

Visit Frederick launches new downtown scavenger hunt

Visit Frederick has launched a new Downtown Frederick Scavenger Hunt designed to complement its popular Downtown Frederick Walking Tour brochure.

The family-friendly scavenger hunt, geared primarily toward children ages 6 to 13, invites participants to follow the walkingtour route while searching for clues, landmarks and lesser-known details throughout historic downtown Frederick.

The project was created in collaboration with Postern, Chris Sparks of Surelocked In Escape Games and artist Matt Long.

Participants can pick up a free Downtown Frederick Walking Tour brochure and scavenger hunt exclusively at the Frederick Visitor Center, 151 S. East St., Frederick. The

scavenger hunt also comes with a color-changing pencil for recording answers.

The walking-tour route is 2.5 miles, mostly flat and completely paved. Along the way, participants search for clues listed on the scavenger hunt sheet and fill in their answers.

The activity is designed for families, school groups, dates and others interested in exploring downtown Frederick while learning more about the city’s history and landmarks.

Those who complete the scavenger hunt are encouraged to share their experience on social media by tagging @visitfrederickmd.

Weinberg Center continues Families Need Fun ticket program

The Weinberg Center for the Arts will continue its Families Need Fun ticket program for the 2026-27 season, providing complimentary tickets to local families facing significant financial or personal hardship.

The program, funded by the Frederick Keys Cares Fund at the Community Foundation of Frederick County, provides tickets to select performances throughout the season, including family-friendly shows, educational programming and other events.

“Making sure the arts are accessible to the broadest audience possible is a cornerstone of the Weinberg Center’s mission,” Rebecca O’Leary, manager of development at the Weinberg Center, said.

“Families Need Fun allows us to welcome

families who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend performances. We are honored to offer moments of joy and togetherness during times when they are needed most.”

Eligible families participate through referrals from partner organizations and service providers throughout Frederick County.

As we approach the 25th anniversary of the attacks, the National Park Service has planned several observances at the memorial. All are free and open to the public.

The 25th annual September 11 Observance will take place Sept. 11 at Memorial Plaza. A morning observance will include quiet reflection on the attacks, a reading of the names of the Flight 93 passengers and crew members and the ringing of the Bells of Remembrance.

An afternoon ceremony will include

remarks, keynote speakers, music and a public wreath laying at the Wall of Names.

Additional events surrounding the anniversary will continue through the weekend, offering another opportunity to remember the 40 people whose courage changed the course of that morning.

70th Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show will honor late co-founder and celebrate local agriculture The 70th annual Thurmont & Emmitsburg Community Show will bring three days of agriculture, exhibits, entertainment and family activities to Catoctin High School Sept. 11 to 13, while honoring late cofounder C. Rodman Myers.

Myers, who died in April, cofounded the show in 1957 with William Baker, then an agriculture teacher at Thurmont High School.

Myers remained closely involved with the Community Show for decades and served as its president for many years.

Organizers plan to recognize Myers’ life and contributions during this year’s show and the annual livestock sale, highlighting the connection between the generations who established the tradition and the young agriculturalists continuing it today.

Exhibitors may enter items free of charge from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sept.

10 and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the gymnasium and agriculture department area at Catoctin High School, 14745 Sabillasville Road, Thurmont.

The Community Show will open to the public at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium with the 50th annual Community Organizations Flag Ceremony, patriotic music performed by the Catoctin High School Band and the announcement of the 2026-27 Catoctin FFA Chapter Ambassador.

Admission and parking are free.

A silver offering will be collected to benefit the Sabillasville Environmental School Youth Agriculture Club.

Visitors may also sign up for door prizes donated by area businesses at the Hospitality Booth. No animals are permitted inside the school except service animals.

A highlight of Friday evening will be the annual Baked Goods Auction, beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.

At 8 p.m., grand champion and reserve champion cakes, pies, breads and other baked goods from the adult, youth and junior departments will be auctioned, with proceeds benefiting various community organizations.

Throughout the weekend, the auxiliary gym will host the Thurmont Regional Library’s annual used book sale, a display of area historical photographs by John Kinnaird and Community Show historical photos and memorabilia.

The livestock program is one of the show’s longstanding ways of supporting local 4-H and FFA members. Youth exhibitors spend months raising, feeding, training and caring for their animals while learning animal husbandry, financial management, record keeping, communication, sportsmanship and responsibility.

Thurmont’s Kountry Kitchen will serve a roast turkey and baked ham buffet from 3 to 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, with a portion of proceeds benefiting the Community Show. The menu includes roast turkey, baked ham, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, green beans, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, rolls and butter, assorted cakes and beverages.

The 52nd annual Catoctin FFA Alumni & Supporters Beef, Sheep, Swine & Market Goat Sale will begin at 7 p.m. in the Agricultural Center, with approximately 50 animals raised by area 4-H and FFA youth expected to be sold.

For exhibitors, the sale marks the culmination of months of work.

Money earned through livestock projects is often reinvested in future projects, saved for college or put toward other goals.

Local businesses, farms, organizations, families and individuals may participate as buyers, directly supporting the young exhibitors and the future of agriculture in Frederick County.

SUNDAY Sunday’s activities begin at 9 a.m. with the Dairy Goat Show, followed by the Dairy Cattle Show at 9:30 a.m. and the Decorated Animal Contest at 11 a.m. in the Agricultural Center.

Community festival will return to downtown Frederick on Sept. 12

elebrate Frederick’s 43rd annual In The Streets festival will fill downtown Frederick with music, food, art, activities and vendors Sept. 12.

The day begins with the Market Street Mile at 9 a.m., followed by the main festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Market Street and Carroll Creek Urban Park.

The Visit Frederick Craft Beverage Experience will run from noon to 5 p.m. along Carroll Creek, followed by the Up the Creek Party from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Carroll Creek Amphitheater.

MARKET STREET MILE The Market Street Mile begins at 9 a.m. and follows a one-mile course down Market Street.

Heats include timed women’s, youth, men’s and nonbinary races, along with untimed fun and family miles. The course begins near the Frederick YMCA and heads south through downtown to Carroll Creek Linear Park.

Proceeds benefit City Youth Matrix and the Lincoln Elementary School Panther Running Club.

ARTISAN BLOCK Between Third and Fourth streets, local makers will sell handmade and original art, jewelry, clothing, handbags, pet items, woodwork, stained glass and other goods.

GOING GREEN BLOCK Between Fourth and Fifth streets, organizations focused on sustainability and environmental issues will offer games, educational activities and information about greener living.

PUBLIC SAFETY BLOCK Between Fifth and Sixth streets, visitors can meet local public safety organizations and learn about emergency services. Junior Fire Company No. 2, 535 N. Market St., Frederick, will also hold its annual open house.

KIDS BLOCK Between Sixth and Seventh streets, children’s organizations will offer activities including STEM projects, sports challenges and sensory exploration. Theatricks will also present circus performances and interactive entertainment nearby throughout the afternoon.

In the Streets drew thousands to downtown Frederick in 2025. Looking north from Carroll Creek, Market LIVE MUSIC Entertainment will take place throughout the festival from late morning through the evening.

At the Carroll Creek Amphitheater, Gillian Smith will perform from noon to 1:45 p.m., followed by Frederick-based hip-hop, R&B and soul group Ahzay & The Squad from 2:30 to 4:15 p.m.

The 2nd Street Stage will feature Southland at 11 a.m., Sierra Howell at 1 p.m. and The Brown Brothers Band at 3 p.m.

The 4th Street Stage will feature bluegrass group Shade Tree Collective from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Baltimore singer-songwriter Enslow from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. and the R&B/funk sounds of the Lana Spence Band from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The 5th Street Jazz Stage will feature Jazz Vocal Workshop Band at 11 a.m., Jazz Adult and Discovery Workshop Band at noon and 2 p.m., Jazz Student Workshop Band at 1 and 3 p.m. and an open jam session at 4 p.m.

The 6th Street Rock Stage will feature performances by students and instructors from Let There Be Rock School Frederick.

KIDS CIRCUS ZONE Theatricks will present family entertainment at Seventh and Market streets beginning at noon.

For Gillian Smith, a good country show is not just about sticking to tradition. She wants people to leave feeling like they got to know the person singing the songs.

That approach has followed Smith from her home in Central Pennsylvania to Nashville, major country festival stages and bills alongside some of the genre’s biggest names. On Sept. 12, it will bring her to downtown Frederick for her first taste of one of the city’s signature celebrations.

Smith will perform from noon to 1:45 p.m. on the Carroll Creek Amphitheater Stage during In The Streets, bringing a full band and a sound she places somewhere on the rock-leaning side of country.

For anyone walking through downtown who may be hearing her name for the first time, she has a pretty simple invitation.

“I love to add the classics into my set to make sure everyone has something they like,” Smith said.

That makes In The Streets a fitting place for an introduction.

The festival has been part of Frederick since 1983, when the city celebrated the reopening of Market Street following months of major renovations. What began with an estimated 10,000 attendees has grown into an annual downtown tradition attracting tens of thousands of visitors for live music, food, art and community programming spread across Market Street and Carroll Creek.

For Smith, a festival where people can stumble across a stage and discover somebody new is exactly the type of opportunity she values.

“I want people to be interested not only in my music, but me as a person,” Smith said. “I want to meet new faces, and hopefully they can connect with the songs that I play and who I am as a person.”

That focus on connection has become central to Smith’s identity as a performer.

Her resume includes appearances at Barefoot Country Music Festival and Carolina Country Music Festival, along with bills featuring Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan. Those larger opportunities have taught her plenty about performing, but Smith said one lesson stands above the rest.

“It’s taught me how to create relationships with fans and the audience,” she said. “It is genuinely my favorite part of being a musician.”

David Bitler is the singer and guitarist for Shade Tree Collective, which is set to play the 4th Street Stage as part of this year’s In The Streets festival in downtown Frederick.

72 Hours caught up with him recently to talk about the local music scene, how his band got its name and his transition from classical music to bluegrass.

“We’re really looking forward to playing In The Streets,” Bitler said. “I’ve never been to one of these, so I’m looking forward to seeing what it brings.”

Where does the name Shade Tree Collective come from?

It’s kind of funny. Most of us in the band at its inception were coming to the local bluegrass jam in Frederick. We had one rehearsal together and the next weekend, COVID shut everything down.

At the end of that first summer when everybody thought they could see each other again, we got together in Boonsboro Park under a really large maple tree.

We were social distancing and all that fun stuff, but we were able to get together to play music under this big shade tree, so that became an icon for the band. As the band has been around, a lot of people come and go. We’ve tried to keep a nucleus, but we have friends sit in with us on a fairly regular basis.

A lot of videos on your website are covers. Do you have any original material?

We have a little bit of original material. We’re always looking to write more.

We’re in the studio right now putting something together. We’re not sure if it’s going to be a single or if it’s going to be a full album, but we’re planning on releasing a few more covers and some original music this winter, I imagine.

People don’t see live music as much as they once did. It can be hard anymore to really connect with people. Have you experienced any of that?

For some, that conversation includes 529 plans, custodial accounts, Trusts, life insurance, or beneficiary designations. Now, families may also hear about a new savings option introduced by President Trump: the 530A Account.

What Is a 530A Account?

530A Accounts are a new type of individual retirement account for eligible children.

Generally, an account may be established for a child who has not turned 18 before the end of the calendar year in which the election is made and who has a valid Social Security number.

Eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, who are U.S. citizens with valid Social Security numbers, may receive a one-time $1,000 contribution from the federal government.

Other individuals may contribute up to an aggregate annual limit, and certain employer contributions may also be available under employer programs. Families should confirm current limits and tax treatment with a qualified tax professional before making contributions.

How Is This Different From a 529 Plan?

A 529 plan is generally designed for education savings. A 530A Account, by contrast, is described by the IRS as a type of traditional IRA for an eligible child. That means it is not simply another education account.

This distinction matters for Estate Planning because families often have different goals

for different assets. For example, one account may be intended for education, another for retirement, and another for general support or inheritance planning. The “right” approach may depend on the child’s age, family structure, tax considerations, and overall Estate Plan.

Grandparents and Other Family Members Should Coordinate Gifts 530A Accounts may appeal to grandparents, relatives, and friends who want to contribute to a child’s future. However, well-intentioned gifts can become complicated if they are not coordinated.

For example, a family may already be using a 529 plan, a Trust, or other accounts for a child. Additional gifts may have tax, financial aid, or Estate Planning consequences. The IRS has also issued guidance addressing transfer tax treatment for certain contributions to 530A Accounts, including a safe harbor for certain individual donors. Because this area is new, families should be especially careful about relying on assumptions.

Because the rules are new and still developing, families should speak with their tax or financial advisor before deciding how a 530A Account fits into their broader plan.

From first draft to final edit, it was about two years. [That time frame] would have been a lot shorter, but sometimes life gets in the way.

I see all these two-hour [long] films, and I’m, like, “How long did they spend in preproduction?” You read about how they’re made and they say they shoot them in like two to three weeks. But there had to be at least a year or two of just constant preproduction meetings just to make sure everything was in place.

How many production days did your film require?

It was just two.

Our first day of shooting, we had two primary locations. We first started at my director of photography’s apartment.

And then after we were finished shooting the scene there, we relocated to the studio that Charm City Filmmakers had set up, which was just like five minutes away. And then we spent the Film still from “The World Is Yours.” rest of the day there just shooting what we could.

But that film was set in 2027, which is just around the corner. And so it feels weird talking about it. When you see it for, like, the first time back in, like 2006, 2009, when I first saw it. And it just feels so far distant, so far away, and yet here it is.

It dealt with a lot of themes about sort of the political climate that we were dealing with back then, just more heightened and just seeing how it’s more relevant today than it was 20 years ago, and just how much of the world has changed.

I’ve always loved Cuarón’s filmography. He’s done great things, telling not just straightforward stories but creating worlds where so much is just going on in the foreground and background — something I’ve always Courtesy photo wanted to do, but just don’t have the resources to just yet.
