CELEBRATE THE SOLSTICE AT SANDBOX BREWHOUSE

The longest day of the year deserves a soundtrack to match. Brain Dead Live will host the Sandbox Solstice Party on June 21, a daylong exploration of sound running from noon to 8 p.m. at the Sandbox Brewhouse taproom, with eight artists — FFiiZZyy, Austin Litz, CLRBRS, Dan Gellerman, Noah Chiles, Sauter (Chris Lock), DJ Dubble 8 and DJ Zzingg — moving through ambient, downtempo, experimental electronic and organic styles as the day unfolds. CANSTRUCTION COMES TO FREDERICK

Picture giant sculptures made entirely out of canned food — landmarks, animals, pop-culture icons, all built can by can — and you’ve got Canstruction, the internationally recognized art competition making its Frederick debut this summer. The Frederick Rescue Mission is bringing seven local teams together to build largescale sculptures using only unopened cans, on display in the Grand Hallway at Warehouse Cinemas from June 19 to July 5. A JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION OF BLACK CLASSICAL MUSIC

As part of SilverVox’s Juneteenth programming, the Denyce Graves Foundation presents “Look Up: Faith. Freedom. Impact.,” a concert celebrating the influence of the Black perspective on the American classical canon. THE LANGUAGES OF TOLKIEN, EXPLAINED

When J.R.R. Tolkien wrote “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit,” he built entire languages to go with them, and those languages form the backbone of his mythology. Linguist Abigail Cagle will explore why Tolkien invented languages and how they shaped his fictional world in a free lecture at 7 p.m. June 20 at Mount Airy Presbyterian Church. Twin Bears Bakery was built the old-fashioned way: one loaf, one risk and one relationship at a time

Forty-two minutes into a conversation inside Twin Bears Bakery, one thing became impossible to ignore: no one had stopped moving.

Behind the conversation, dough was still being shaped. Ovens were going. Staff moved with the kind of rhythm that only comes from repetition, trust and a lot of early mornings. Even during an interview, the work did not pause.

That feels like the right way to understand Twin Bears.

From the outside, the South Carroll Street bakery has quickly become one of Frederick’s most sought-after morning stops, drawing regular lines for bagels, bread and pastries that often sell fast. Spend time inside, though, and the appeal becomes clearer. This is not a business pretending to be handcrafted. It actually is.

Some businesses talk about community as part of the brand. Twin Bears started there.

Before there was a storefront, co-founder Andrew Roy was baking bread for friends during the pandemic, leaving fresh loaves on porches, stepping back and checking in from a distance. “It was a thing that I could do,” Roy said.

That small gesture grew quickly. More people reached out, including friends who were immunocompromised, struggling financially or simply trying to get through an uncertain time. Eventually, someone asked to buy a loaf. Roy came up with a price on the spot: $10.

That first sale helped launch Twin Bears, but the story started even earlier, thanks in large part to his wife and co-founder, Emily.

The couple had long imagined building something around food together, though not necessarily a bakery. Emily was the one exploring heirloom grains and sourcing stoneground flour while asking bigger questions about what they were actually eating.

At first, Roy did not fully get it.

Then one morning, making pancakes for his daughter, he used some of Emily’s einkorn flour because the house was out of regular flour.

Twin Bears Bakery enthusiastically trace Frederick’s grain history without missing a beat, that mattered.

When the bakery opened in January 2025, the plan was simple: put some bread on the counter, serve coffee, maybe a few muffins and grow steadily.

Instead, Frederick showed up in force.

“We just got crushed, bro,” Roy said with a laugh.

The demand was overwhelming enough that success created its own kind of pressure. Selling out might look exciting from the outside, but Roy saw it differently.

“My heart is in feeding people,” he said.

That mentality shapes more than the menu. It shapes the culture.

Ask Roy what makes Twin Bears special, and he quickly shifts attention away from himself.

“I am not important,” he said. “They are important.”

One City, One Sound to celebrate Juneteenth with night of Black music history at Sky Stage

A historical nuance that many Americans may not be aware of is the fact that Juneteenth is a representative collection of emancipation celebrations across the southern United States, some of which were not even held on June 19 proper. The federal recognition of the holiday in 2021 brought the longstanding celebration into the greater public consciousness, but a gap in understanding and appreciation still undeniably exists.

In honor of the freedom day, One City, One Sound, a local music and art platform focusing on overlooked voices in our community, has organized a night of cultural exchange and education dedicated to the history of Black music in America — all taking place at Frederick’s landmark outdoor venue, Sky Stage.

Lorenzo Nichols (aka Stitch Early), Shawn Demetrius Price and Christian Taylor are the three parts that make up One City, One Sound — a team they argue is on par with the Power Rangers. Though the platform itself is young, only being officially established in 2025, the trio brings a wealth of production, promotion and performing experience to the table.

Price’s resume includes rapping under the Demetrius moniker, a poetic force in the local hip-hop scene, as well as curating a variety of shows over the last year prior to formalizing One City, One Sound.

Nichols, the central figure behind underground hip-hop project Stitch Early & The Populatn, was the first person Price looked toward for guidance.

“He’s always been someone that’s ready to help,” Price said. “I

The group is aware that real Frederick music fans remain cautiously optimistic in the midst of this live music revival, but Price reassured that they have the right mindset to push through this culture barrier.

“It’s not that people don’t care, but they’ve seen this movie before,” he said. “It’s our job to prove that this is something different for all of us.”

With an opportunity like hosting Juneteenth at Sky Stage during an admittedly confusing time of social progress and civil unrest, One City, One Sound stands to set the bar for what local events can provide as both artistic expression and cultural enrichment.

Though the City of Frederick is hosting their own inaugural Juneteenth Celebration earlier in the day, the demand for more independent, community-led programming still exists.

Ahzay returns to Carroll Creek with The Squad and something bigger in mind

For Frederick artists, some stages carry a little extra meaning, and Alive@ Five is one of them.

Downtown Frederick’s long-running summer concert series has become one of the city’s signature warmweather traditions, drawing crowds to Carroll Creek each week for live music, drinks and an easy reason to stay downtown a little longer. On June 18, that stage belongs to Frederick hiphop veteran Ahzay, returning with his full live ensemble, Ahzay & The Squad.

For longtime local music fans, Ahzay is hardly a new name. Frederickbred artist Shaquill McCullers, who performs as Ahzay, has been releasing music for more than a decade, first entering the scene in 2014. But if earlier versions of the artist captured different chapters of young adulthood, the performer taking the Carroll Creek stage this summer said experience has sharpened both his music and perspective.

“I’m all about turning real life into music,” Ahzay said. “I aim to encourage, inspire and motivate people through the journey of life.”

That mindset has fueled a productive recent stretch, with four projects released since 2023, each reflecting personal growth, accountability and purpose.

“I’ve continued to find purpose in making music that has intent and can live with people day to day,” he said. But this performance is just as much about the live experience as the catalog.

That is where Ahzay & The Squad come in.

The group features Ahzay alongside Calvin Little Jr., Joe McCargo, Sa’Miya Wooten, Ramon Shelton, Gabriel Thomas and Brandon Watts, bringing together a blend of hip-hop, soul, R&B and live musicianship that gives the performance a different feel than a traditional rap set.

According to Ahzay, the chemistry started long before the band officially existed. “Our core was built from a crew of us from my longtime barbershop,” he said. “We all had known each other for nearly a decade before we ever thought about playing together.”

That familiarity became something bigger after the group’s first rehearsal.

“We realized we had something special and curated our sound from there,” he said.

Coming to the Frederick Fairgrounds June 20, husband-andwife duo Mary and Ben Cairns present the Frederick Fantasy Market — a oneday festival for local families and fantasy lovers.

Throughout the day, attendees can find themselves immersed in a magical realm full of live Dungeons and Dragons encounters, food trucks, a fantastical bazaar and interactive quests all tied to an enchanting theme.

Though similar to the beloved structure of a Renaissance Faire, the Cairnses aimed to focus less on historical roots, and instead spotlight all things fiction — a kingdom of charm and adventure brought to life.

From strolling down aisles of handmade goods in a sparkling marketplace to wandering about in search of interaction-based experiences, the Cairnses strive to emphasize the ability for all guests to find good company among new friends.

“This specific Frederick fantasy market is geared towards families, younger individuals, or anyone who enjoys magic,” Ben Cairns said. “I wanted it to be very easy for people to access.” Taking place near the heart of downtown Frederick, the market grants guests an ethereal realm in their own backyards.

Though the Frederick Fantasy Market makes its debut this year, Cairns explained the long journey of its arrival; what once was a fleeting dream between friends soon turned into an actualized project. Cairns noted, “It has been in the works for a couple of years and seemed like it needed to be done here.”

Though, location is what makes this event truly significant. Taking place in such a lively arts community as Frederick is what tethers this event to the people that live here — allowing them to resonate with a warm welcome into a magical new world that thrives on expression and art.

Cairns shared, “Frederick is the perfect place for this. We’ve got the quirky community, a huge population, and a ton of local artists who love this kind of stuff.”

As someone who has been involved in the local arts scene for many years, Ben Cairns expressed how special community can be. “I’ve been doing D&D and volunteering at Renaissance Faires for a long time,” Cairns said, noting the impact that events such as these have had on his life, and the lives of many others he knows well.

In pursuit of bringing something special to Frederick, the Cairnses found themselves looking within their community to bring this magic-filled day to life.

“Mary and I are just teachers, so as far as money goes, it was kind of hard to get the ball rolling,” Cairns said. Though in terms of raising support, their fellow artisans stepped up with no hesitation.

In building the Frederick Fantasy Market, Cairns noted, “I needed to gather the resources — whether it was from people who are super passionate and can help me with gaps of knowledge, or people who have the resources to expand it and make it the best it can be.”

With hopes to grow in the future, the Cairnses decided to build upon the narrative of the event — creating a story that keeps guests wanting to further unravel it. As a result, the duo developed an interactive quest for attendees; upon completion of the journey, guests will receive a special 3D-printed coin as a reward. The Cairnses aim to see a plethora of locals visit the fairy-tale world they’ve curated.

Ben Cairns noted, “I want guests to leave with a sense of whimsy, community, and the feeling of silliness that is fantasy.

My hope is that guests bring the magic back with them into the real world.”

SilverVox Film + Music Festival to bring movies, music and more to downtown Frederick

“American Idol” breakout Rae Boyd, a Frederick native making her first major performance since her run on the primetime show. Indie-pop duo Cults headlines on June 20.

In total, more than 30 musicians and bands — ranging from national touring acts to local and regional groups spanning hip-hop, rock, acoustic roots and jazz — will perform across the festival.

“Music and film are inseparable in today’s world,” said Dan Silver, SilverVox Festival music director.

“The best songs make you see something and the best films make you feel something you can only describe in terms of sound.” Silver added that several festival entrants will be featured in both film and music programming.

The SilverVox Film + Music Festival, a four-day celebration of film premieres, live music and performing arts, will kick off June 18 and run through June 21 across venues in and around downtown Frederick.

The inaugural event, presented by the WLR Foundation, will feature official selections from this year’s Sundance and South By Southwest (SXSW) film festivals, national and local music acts, and a lineup of talks and panels with leaders from cinema, music and the arts. More than 200 screenings, performances and talks are scheduled across the four days.

“SilverVox Film + Music Festival is all about turning an entire city into a stage for creativity,” said Carrie Delente, festival co-founder and SilverVox board chair. “Frederick already has the energy, the venues, and the community. We’re bringing it all together into something that invites discovery, connection and unforgettable experiences.”

Events will be staged at a dozen venues in and around downtown Frederick, including the Weinberg Center for the Arts, Maryland Ensemble Theatre, New Spire Arts, Sky Stage, Delaplaine Arts Center, Hood College and Warehouse Cinemas, along with restaurants and pop-up performance spaces throughout the historic district.

THE PANELS

Kishi Bashi, the Emmy-nominated singer, songwriter, violinist and filmmaker, born Kaoru Ishibashi in Seattle and trained at Berklee College of Music, has spent over a decade building a body of work that defies easy description and rewards close listening for a lifetime. Bashi will perform at 6 p.m. June 20 at the Weinberg Center in downtown Frederick as part of the SilverVox Film + Music Festival.

THE FILMS

The festival’s marquee film is “Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror,” an award-winning documentary that premiered at SXSW and explores the origins of 1975’s “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” Presented in arrangement with Bob Yari’s Magenta Light Studios and directed by Linus O’Brien, son of Rocky Horror creator Richard O’Brien, the screening will be followed by a live Q&A with O’Brien and a showing of the original 1975 “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

In a nod to local filmmaking, the festival will also host the Frederick hometown premiere of “Spinsters,” a bittersweet comedy about two middle-aged, estranged best friends coming to terms with their lives back in their hometown. The feature, directed by Rahel Grunder

and written by Sasha Carrera, was produced and filmed locally in Frederick.

Other films on the schedule include “About Face: Disrupting Ballet,” “Three Colors: Pan-African,” “Joybubbles” and “Their Town,” the latter written by actor Mark Duplass, known to fans of “The Morning Show” on Apple TV and “The League” on FX. “The process of selecting the festival’s film lineup was arduous,” said Walter Chalkley, SilverVox Festival film program director, whose credentials include producing 16 international film festivals. “SilverVox is striving to address all arts across the spectrum.” Chalkley and a panel

of jurists viewed 425 entries and selected 150 films, including several national and international premieres.

Ten judges — nationally recognized screenwriters, directors, producers, documentarians, videographers, designers, animators and illustrators — will evaluate entries across 10 award categories. Among them is Frederick County’s own Eduardo Sánchez, co-writer and codirector of “The Blair Witch Project” and director of “American Horror Stories” and the “Yellowjackets” season finale.

THE MUSIC

Macasaet joins a lineup that includes Pamela Nemoto, former Starz executive and programming veteran for Amazon MGM Studios, BBC Studios and HBO, on what streamers want in 2026; Cherry Graziosi, producer of the 2019 documentary “Knock Down the House,” on finding lightning in a bottle; and Rich Daughtridge, president of the Independent Cinema Alliance, on the future of film.

SILVERVOX KIDS

The festival’s family programming, SilverVox Kids, brings a full day of international animation and family films to the YMCA Ausherman Arts Center on June 20, with encore screenings June 21.

More than 30 short films from Europe, Asia, North America and beyond are organized into ageappropriate blocks running from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., covering

everything from playful comedies and fantasy adventures to richer coming-of-age stories, including a block of international shorts with English subtitles. A free animation workshop runs from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. on June 20 (the Sunday encore skips the workshop and starts at 11 a.m.). A single ticket covers the full day’s programming, and families are encouraged to review individual film descriptions, since ageappropriateness standards vary by country of origin.

Feature comedy film ‘Spinsters’ will make its hometown premiere at SilverVox “Spinsters,” a feature comedy filmed entirely in Frederick, will make its hometown premiere at noon on June 20 at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, as part of the inaugural SilverVox Film + Music Festival.

The film stars Rain Pryor, known for her role as T.J. Jones on “Head of the Class” and for her more recent appearance in “Brewster’s Millions: Christmas,” alongside Frederick-based writer and producer Sasha Carrera, known for the Baltimore-based series “Thespian” and “Stinky Summer.” “Spinsters” was directed by award-winning Swiss director Rahel Grunder and shot by cinematographer Alexa Ihrt.

“Spinsters” tells the story of two sassy, vibrant, estranged middleaged best friends grappling with aging parents, dead-end careers, paths not taken and each other as they redefine “happily ever after.”

A Maryland State Arts Council grant recipient, “Spinsters” was filmed entirely in Frederick, showcasing the city’s charm and bluegrass music, one of the region’s vibrant treasures. The film’s soundtrack features local bluegrass musicians including mandolinist David Propst of Bluetrain, banjo player Mike Munford of Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen and bassist

James Thomas of the Satyr Hill Band. The production galvanized the community, with businesses and residents offering their locations, wares and services for filming and hosting out-of-town cast and crew.

At a time when “middlescence” and Third Act podcasts supplant kick-back retirement planning, when unmarried women are the fastestgrowing demographic in America and groundbreaking studies from UCLA and Harvard have shown the health benefits of friendship among women, “Spinsters” captures this evolution with humor and heart and redefines the modern “spinster.”

Linus O’Brien’s documentary showcases the long-standing impact of ‘Rocky Horror’

Filmmaker Linus O’Brien grew up surrounded by music and theater.

His father, Richard O’Brien, created “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a cult classic film that started as a stage musical in London. The film has grown a wide and dedicated fanbase since its 1975 debut.

In celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary last year, Linus O’Brien directed “Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror,” a documentary exploring the show’s creation and enduring impact on audiences. It features original cast members, songs and video footage.

The documentary is the centerpiece film for this year’s SilverVox Film + Music Festival, which is set to run from June 18 to 21 in downtown Frederick.

Linus O’Brien recently sat down for an interview with 72 Hours in anticipation of the festival.

What was your motivation behind creating this documentary?

I was putting together a clip package with my brother, for my dad, of his movies and TV clips, and when I came across the clip of “I’m Going Home,” which was on YouTube. The comments underneath it were just so emotional and heartfelt that it really just lit a fire under me. I was like, we really need to celebrate the people who have loved it this much. It’s really about community and connection at the end of the day, and so being able to highlight that, and let the world know that the love for Rocky runs really deep was very important.

When I think about it, Rocky’s probably saved hundreds of thousands of lives, and I don’t know if there’s another work of art that can say the same thing. It’s not to diminish other works of art, it’s really just to exemplify how something on the surface can seem just frivolous, maybe, and can actually really support people who feel a bit alone sometimes. The documentary is my small way of kind of giving back to the community that I’ve loved for so long.

Do you think your dad’s experience with “Rocky Horror” influenced your love for film or music?

DIIV will play the SilverVox Festival DIIV will join the Saturday night lineup on June 20 at the Weinberg Center for the SilverVox Film + Music Festival in Frederick.

Zachary Cole Smith founded Brooklyn’s DIIV in 2011 as a solo bedroom project that quickly expanded into one of indie rock’s most critically celebrated acts and defined what guitar music can feel like in the 21st century. Their 2012 debut “Oshin” — shimmering, woozy and endlessly layered — became an instant touchstone of the shoegaze revival. 2016’s “Is the Is Are” pushed deeper and darker, while their 2019 follow up “Deceiver” was heavier still.

Their 2024 album “Frog in Boiling Water” was four years in the making and their most ambitious and emotionally complex work yet: a record about endurance, about staying in the slowly heating water of right now, about finding your way through anyway. And after opening the American leg of Depeche Mode’s 2023 Momento Mori world tour at arenas like Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center, SilverVox Film & Music Festival offers a rare chance to catch their layered, hypnotic sound up close in an intimate 1,143 seat historic theater.

As a bonus, SilverVox will also be screening their film “Boiled Alive” on June 19.

The festival runs June 18 to 21 across multiple venues in downtown Frederick.

Q&A: Cults talk new album, songwriting process ahead of their show at the Weinberg Center

Brian Oblivion and Maddie Follin make up the New York indie band Cults. “New” and “York” are the operative words in that sentence because when we caught up by phone recently, it was the morning after the New York Knicks completed the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history, besting the San Antonio Spurs by a point in Game 4 of the championship series.

“We’re some ecstatic New Yorkers after last night,” Oblivion said. “It was absolutely incredible. I took my dog for a walk and I didn’t actually give any high fives, but I felt like I saw so many that I was part of it.”

The duo will bring their band to the Weinberg Center for the Arts on June 20 as part of the SilverVox Film + Music Festival going on around town throughout the weekend. We caught up with them recently to talk about the work they’re currently putting in on a new album, the changing landscape of the music industry, how their songwriting process has changed and, of course, why Frederick is the only date on their touring schedule so far for 2026.

From what I can find, you guys don’t have anything else on the books other than Frederick, do you?

Oblivion: No, we are shin-deep in finishing our next record right now.

This will be the first show we play in six months and we’re really excited to be involved with this because we love film festivals. We’re also really excited to play a show, so we don’t forget how (laughs).

Have you guys been to Frederick before?

Follin: I am positive we have never been there. But we’re excited.

How did this come together?

Oblivion: It seems like this is a new festival and it’s really cool to try and bring together music and film.

We were really surprised when the flyer came out and we saw DIIV were playing, too. They are a band we’ve known and loved for many years. Then we looked up the venue and it was so beautiful. We were thinking, “Wow, this really is turning into a mini festival.” We didn’t really know what to expect, but now it’s turning into a really awesome show. Now, we need to double-time practice.

Oblivion: I feel like the vibe of what we’ve been doing ... I feel like we’ve been trying to make a really chill record, but our natural instincts and youthful impulsiveness never allows that to happen. We start with a really mellow Mazzy Star-like song and by the end of it, it has 14 different string sections and bombastic drums. This time around, I think we’ve been able to maintain some focus and restraint.

It’s surprising that this is the first time we’ve been able to do a song in a day. I was surprised to find that was even possible. It’s happened a couple times and I’ve been like, “Whoa, this is the benefit of having done this for so long.”

That leads me to this: Do you think it’s been easier or harder, over the years, to write?

Follin: I feel like it’s about the same. It’s easy to spit something out, but I feel like it’s still hard to create something that we ... I mean, we don’t want to put anything out that we’re both not equally super proud of and excited about.

Oblivion: The world definitely does not need more fluff music. It’s gotten easier to use the tools. We have a sound in mind and we can get there really fast. The harder thing is as a veteran band, you’re like, “What do I want to say? What world do I want to create?” When you’re a new band, you don’t even ask yourself that question; you just kind of know the answer. Otherwise, why would you start a band at all? But as your band progresses over time, those questions become important if you don’t want to just keep repeating yourself. That’s what is worth thinking about.

Everything else is just temporary.

I read an interview with you guys where you said you don’t think there are any other bands that sound like you. It got me thinking: Is that by design? When you set out to write new music, how do you continue to be unique in a world where there is so much everywhere all of the time?

Follin: I think our tastes are very different, so getting to a point where we agree creates something totally new. It’s through compromise.

Oblivion: Running the band as a two-person democracy creates a different world than either of us would create on our own. It’s weird.

When we get together, we create Cults. It’s not like either of us has an idea that ends up being what’s close to happening. A lot of times, it’s a surprise to us, too.

Follin: I can also give Brian a reference, like, “Oh, I like this song.”

And he’ll try something inspired by that and I’ll be like, “Oh, that’s not at all what I was thinking, but this is cool.”

Oblivion: To your point, we have these touchpoints of Phil Spectorera, ‘80s new wave, goth things that are ever-present guiding lights.

The one thing that happens lately is that I find new bands who sound like us and like they come from our generation and I think that’s pretty awesome, but it makes me want to do something different (laughs).

Maybe I’m just in my head a little bit.

Do you guys have a polka record in you that you might make?

Follin: (Laughs) I do think we have a little bit of a polka song.

Oblivion: When this band started, the impetus was a road trip where we listened to Lesley Gore and some sugary goofy music and realized that we both really liked it.

That was the launching off point.

That’s my advice for any musician who asks where to start with music: Think of the influences you have that are most unique to you and start there. If your dad was a massive Pat Metheny fan, that’s more interesting than if you like Radiohead. So, we’re lucky to find each other and find these common interests that have pushed us through all these years.

For her first live performance since “American Idol” season 24, Rae Boyd is coming home to Frederick — and fulfilling a childhood dream of singing at the Weinberg Center.

Performing under the stage name Rae, the Frederick native finished in Idol’s top 11 with her powerful take on iconic hits.

On June 19, Rae will be headlining at the SilverVox Film + Music Festival with fellow Idol alum Jesse Findling. Rae took time to talk with us about her career, “American Idol” experience and her favorite Frederick hangouts.

It’s funny, because even though I’ve performed on these big stages I still feel so nervous, because [the Weinberg] seems like the biggest stage in my head. The “little me” is very excited!

Tell us a bit about your “American Idol” origin story.

In high school, I was in every show, in pageants, in every way that you could sing. I would have always grown up around music no matter what, but growing up near Maryland Ensemble Theater and the Weinberg, I was extremely immersed in it.

Frederick is huge on the arts. It’s one of the only places in Maryland that has a lot of live music. I was lucky enough to live here and have those experiences and do those open mics. My sister plays around the area a lot, so I sang at a lot of her shows.

My Idol journey began when I was singing in Vegas. It was my last night, and I was approached by an Idol producer and he was like, “You should be on ‘American Idol.’” At first I didn’t believe it, but from there it never stopped. It started in September and then ended a few weeks ago.

Wow, what a whirlwind!

It definitely was.

After being a lifelong “American Idol” fan, what surprised you most about being on the other side of the screen?

You’d think people might be cold, but all the producers, the wardrobe, the PAs, the contestants, we all became a family.

Even after you get eliminated, they’re still there for you, they’re checking in on you, we’re all still friends. It’s one big family.

And now you’re bringing part of that Idol family — Jesse Findling — to open and to perform with you. What can people expect from your upcoming concert?

Bringing Jesse on this show was really exciting. We got close during Idol, and we were just like, “We need to be doing stuff together,” so this is our first go at it! He’s amazing, and it’s both of our first big shows after Idol.

Rae Boyd At the concert, I’m going to do stuff that I have done on the show, but I also have so many original arrangements that I didn’t bring [on Idol], or stuff that we were going to do and then changed at the last minute. It’s going to be storytelling — not only my Idol journey, but who I am as an artist and who I want to be as an artist. I want this to be a closing chapter but also the start of something new.

Now for the important question — what are your favorite Frederick hangouts?

Shout-out to Odin CrossFit. That was where I started to do CrossFit. I’m a big CrossFit girl, and I love working out. [CrossFit] changed my life, helping me find myself as an adult, and I got to socialize with so many great people. Right across the street, there’s Gravel & Grind, my favorite coffee spot. Also, I love Frederick Coffee Co. Big shout-out to Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar. Eric’s great and they did a lot of support for me during my Idol journey, and same with JoJo’s Restaurant & Tap House. Shout-out to the library. Oh my gosh, there’s so many amazing little gems in Frederick ... I can’t even pick!

One City, One Sound will always be a Frederick-based organization, but they have their sights set on bringing their working knowledge to other cities on the rise that may not have the entire infrastructure to support events similar to Juneteenth.

“We’re building some of our work out, but then we have other ways where it can be mobile, we come to your city with your artists. Sometimes people focus on going big, but there are more Fredericks than there are Baltimores,” Nichols remarked.

Outside of more traditional live music events, the multimedia platform has also launched their Sound Off series, online video content focusing on a cappella performances from local artists. The first in the series features one of Juneteenth’s special lineup, Steven Thad, with Baltimore rapper John Wells on deck.

They are not looking at people’s stream counts, follower counts or anything like that. They instead want to position artists in a different way than they would normally have the chance to. A rising tide does indeed lift all boats, and innovators such as these young men see the value in paying it back to the community through their organization’s mission.

“Sometimes people will hear ‘Frederick’ and think we are nothing but farms or even confuse us with Fredericksburg. The people of Frederick know the amazing art and culture that we have and always had,” ,” Nichols said. “We want to put our city on a platform so that we can create next-level creative experiences for everybody involved.”

One of the beautiful things about Sky Stage is that it allows for the event to spill over the stone walls and through the cutaways to drench the sidewalks of East All Saints Street and South Carroll Street, so even if you are just passing by, interacting with the programming is inevitable.

When asking them about what they wish Frederick knew about our Black culture, Price closed out the interview with a powerful statement: “We’ve been here for a long time.”

“There are a lot of transplants that don’t necessarily know the ins and outs of Frederick,” Nichols added.

“People are getting used to the idea of how fast it is growing and it’s not going to be all in one place.

Understand, it’s one long history with multiple communities ... Frederick is big enough for all of us.”

Taylor, always the one to drop that closing bar to seal the deal, said, “From our perspective, we want to reach people where they are, and then showcase the diversity of Black talent and build an experienced platform around that ... we honestly haven’t seen that too many times in Frederick.”

Perhaps that is what this Juneteenth Celebration at Sky Stage represents: a long-overdue spotlight on the community that has always been here, but never had a consistent platform to share their music and art.
