CANDLELIGHT TOUR OF HISTORIC HOUSES OF WORSHIP

The holiday season in downtown Frederick means its famous historic churches will soon be on display for an annual self-guided tour. Frederick has long been known as “The City of Clustered Spires” because of its collection of churches with tall steeples that form an iconic skyline. On Dec. 26 from 3 to 8 p.m., the free-admission tour will let visitors see the inside of several of the beautiful structures, some of which have origins in the late 1700s. Many of them served as makeshift hospitals during the Civil War. Ten sites will be part of this year’s tour. The architectural styles include Greek Revival, Classic Gothic Revival, Modern Gothic and Victorian Gothic. Several churches will host special holiday programs and chorale performances. Roy Rogers, an event sponsor, is scheduled to provide coffee and hot chocolate at a few participating churches.

APPALACHIAN CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL

The time between Christmas and New Year’s Day can feel like a dead zone, with few options for entertainment and human contact outside the home, but this year, families can fill that time with the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival, which will hold a special Winter Residency Concert series in Jefferson County, West Virginia, about 30 minutes from Frederick. From Dec. 27 to 31, four concerts will be held in Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry and Charles Town. The musicians will include string duets, ensembles and a pianist. The music will cover a range of classic composers, including Tchaikovsky, Handel and Beethoven. “I want people who have never gone to classical music concerts to come and have an open mind and feel invited and welcome,” ACMF Founder Katie Tertell said. “I also want people who are super serious classical music nerds and have season subscriptions to wherever to realize this is also for them.” At least two concerts will offer refreshments, including a sparkling wine toast on New Year’s Eve. A festival pass to three of the four concerts is $90. Children under 18 are admitted for free.

Jump, jam, and reminisce about the 1980s with Guys In Thin Ties as 2025 winds down. They play music “from an era when hair was big, collars were popped up, and pop culture was, like, totally gnarly.” Their selections vary from pop to new wave to alternative. A newly released film, “You Got Gold: A Celebration of John Prine,” is a tribute to the legendary songwriter, filmed in October 2022 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The event brought together acclaimed artists, friends, and family to share stories and perform classic songs, honoring Prine’s legacy. Appalachian Chamber Music Festival plays put 2025 with Winter Residency Concert Series

Some call it Feral Week, others Twixmas, and still others a black hole, in which time has lost all meaning. That week between Christmas and New Years can hold any number of associations, but in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, the Appalachian Chamber Music Festival (ACMF) is reclaiming the week and infusing it with the beauty of music and the warmth of community.

ACMF’s Winter Residency Chamber Music Concert Series takes place Dec. 27 to 31 in a series of four concerts in Shepherdstown, Harpers Ferry, and Charles Town. The event marks the close of ACMF’s fifth season.

“Between Christmas and New Year’s, a lot of people are off work, and they want to do things with their family. It’s a time to relax and reflect. We thought it’s a good time to have concerts, and people seem to agree,” ACMF Founder Katie Tertell said.

Children under 18 are admitted free. Each concert is an hour long, with no intermission.

On Dec. 27 at 2 p.m., the series kicks off with a festival favorite, “Duo Delights: Festive Treats,” at the Shepherdstown Train Station. The concert will feature several pairings of string duets.

Hot chocolate is included.

Bolivar Bread Bakery will provide sweet treats.

“Duo Delights is always one of the most popular concerts.

People love it. The venue, which is the Shepherdstown Train Station, is a super fun venue ...,” Tertell said. “They’re short and sweet pieces generally, and it’s really fun, very interactive — the most intimate of all of the concerts.”

“Holiday Highlights” is on Dec. 28 at 4 p.m., extending the Christmas cheer by a few more days. There will be selections from seasonal favorites, like Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” and Handel’s “Messiah.” Some

“Splendor and Brilliance” is the third concert, on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. It will feature pianist Ellen Hwangbo, along with festival string players.

Described as “a program filled with warmth, introspection, and light for the perfect midwinter musical escape,” this concert presents a range of composers from Beethoven to Reena Esmail.

Esmail’s rendition of the “I Wonder as I Wander” is a particular highlight because of the piece’s Appalachian roots.

Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata will be performed with a unique twist.

“Ellen, the pianist, will be playing the first and the last movement, and then the middle movement, which is the lush, beautiful slow movement is the string arrangement.” Tertell said. “It’s a version of Pathétique that you’ll never hear anywhere else apart from ACMF.” ACMF’s fifth season and the year 2025 will wrap up on New Year’s Eve. The concert, titled, “A Cele-

bration of Togetherness: Reflection, Gathering, and Looking Forward,” will be at the War Memorial Building in Charles Town at 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. There will be a wide range of composers and time periods, and will conclude, fittingly, with a sparkling wine toast and a sparkling wine reception.

Each concert in the series has been curated with intention.

“When I’m putting together these pieces, I try to think a lot about the emotional journey I’m taking somebody on through the concert — what I want them to feel when they come into the room and then when they leave,” Tertell said.

Tertell recognizes that the holiday season can be a difficult time for many. She hopes that the concerts will give people an opportunity to come together and take advantage of the unique flexibility of that week.

“It’s one of the only times in the year when a lot of us have time off together with our family and with people we care about,” Tertell said. “We want to give somebody a gift that they’ll remember and I think music is such a great way to do that, especially if you’re sharing that

experience with them. It stays with you in a different way, and hopefully teaches people something about what really matters in life.”

The belief in music as a force for bringing people together was central to ACMF’s founding in 2021.

Tertell’s idea for the festival had been taking shape for several years prior, but the cellist was a member of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland at the time.

After leaving the orchestra, she began to develop the venture in earnest, turning her attention to Harpers Ferry, a place that held family ties for Tertell.

“It’s a place that I think has always spoken to me, and it’s got such a rich, complex history and obviously, it’s an incredibly gorgeous place,” Tertell said. “I just felt it was a place that deserved to be celebrated.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought much of the world, and particularly the music world, to a standstill, the vision and the urgency of that vision became clear.

“During COVID, I realized more than ever how much people need that connection

In addition to the winter residency, ACMF holds a summer festival that spans weeks, venues, and even states. The organization also offers classes, workshops, and other educational opportunities throughout the year.

No matter the season or the occasion, Tertell is passionate about sharing the power and beauty of music with both the seasoned and the new audiences.

Part of what makes the Washington Ballet’s “Nutcracker” distinct is its D.C.-centric

reimagining, created by former artistic director Septime Webre.

Septime and the Washington Ballet were among the first to create a locally focused retelling of “The Nutcracker,” Artistic Director Edwaard Liang says. “The history and the identity of ‘The Nutcracker’ really belongs to D.C.” Since then, other ballet companies across the country have replicated that formula.

Though the production still feels classic, D.C. details are everywhere once you know where to look, says Sara Lange, a board member and former student of the company’s ballet school.

It turns the production into an Easter egg hunt for audiences trying to count all of the references — starting with the sets, which include a Colonial-era Georgetown mansion and a cherry-blossom-filled Tidal Basin.

Eight historical figures make appearances, including George Washington, who trades his general’s

uniform for the role of the Nutcracker and leads toy soldiers modeled after the city’s monuments.

The cavalry riding in to save the day includes a playful roll call of historical figures, including Benjamin Franklin, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass.

35 PERFORMANCES

“It’s like a ‘Nutcracker’ factory,” Liang says on a Thursday in late November, as dancers rehearse at the company’s headquarters in Tenleytown, spilling out of three studio spaces.

The company will perform 35 shows between Black Friday and New Year’s Day. Coordinating the rehearsals required to pull it together takes a level of orchestration that Liang compares to air traffic control.

Auditions begin in mid- to late September, immediately followed by six to eight weeks of rehearsals among five or six casting groups — labeled in jewel tones like rubies, emeralds and diamonds to avoid any sense of ranking.

“The spreadsheet is unbelievable,” Liang says, explaining that the casting rotation is arranged to allow each dancer to perform between six and 12 shows over the course of the run.

“They really have to be all in,” he says. “The amount of rehearsals, the amount of driving back and forth, the amount of dedication in terms of weekends — basically, they sign a contract that they cannot miss and need to be available for the weekends.”

Once prep moves into the theater, every minute is spoken for: Tech and dress rehearsals are timed down to the minute, so that each student and company member can run every role at least once or twice onstage.

“It’s nutso,” Liang says. “But it’s also 35 performances for me to be in front of the curtain and speak to the community that we serve — talking about the school, bringing out kids, showing … the transformational power [of the arts].”

225 COSTUMES (PLUS ENDLESS TULLE)

For the costume department, “Nutcracker” season restarts shortly after the final curtain comes down on closing night, assistant wardrobe supervisor Carolynn Hawthorne says.

In January, a team of three people — Hawthorne, wardrobe supervisor Monica Leland and wardrobe assistant Sasha Zabela — head back to the studio to wash, clean, sanitize and store about 225 costumes. But the strenuous work of dancers after a long season run means much of the preparation is dedicated to

There are weekly tutu baths. And about 50 wigs and hairpieces rotate through twice-weekly cleanings and resets.

Other elements of wardrobe are harder to calculate. Thousands of rhinestones, a zillion crystals. And tulle — layers and layers of pleated, folded and floating tulle. “It feels,” Hawthorne says, “like it’s endless.”

300 POUNDS OF FALLING SNOW

The action behind the scenes of “The Nutcracker” is just as much a production as the actual performance, says Suzi Kilbourne, now in her 14th season as the show’s stage manager.

It takes a team of 42 people to run the production — including carpenters, electricians, props handlers, wardrobe crews and children’s coordinators.

Ahead of that first Sunday evening performance, Kilbourne walked through some of the mechanics that power the ballet: about 500 theatrical lights and electrified scenic elements; a system of ropes stagehands use to pull scenery in and out like clockwork; a fog machine squeezed into the cramped space just offstage.

Then there’s the snow. Each season requires about 300 pounds of “snow”: paper confetti that sprinkles down from slings of muslin that are suspended overhead — eight to 10 pounds per performance.

This shift is especially clear among younger travelers. Gen Z in their 20s drives the trend by choosing experiences that feel more personal.

Destinations are responding with itineraries that encourage visitors to linger, connect with locals and spend more time in one place.

Last year’s record-breaking “Nutcracker” sales brought in $3.9 million for the company. They hope to hit a new mark this year.

“The stakes are high for us,” Palmquist says. “But it really is, at least in my opinion, an expression of the institution at its best.”

The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) will debut its 30th anniversary mega-exhibition, “Fantastic Realities: Truth Stranger Than Fiction,” on Oct. 4.

The year-long exhibition debuts as AVAM prepares to enter its fourth decade as the congressionally designated museum for self-taught, intuitive artists, and consistently ranked as among Baltimore’s favorite destinations among Marylanders and visitors alike.

The exhibition will transform the second floor gallery space of the Zanvyl A. Krieger Main Building, and present more than 130 artworks, ranging from surreal oil paintings, poignant ceramic subway scenes, and haunting lithographs, to poseable handcrafted action figures, chainsawcarved minotaurs, and colorful handpainted sci-fi galaxies.

The exhibition focuses on depicted worlds. Some artists channel from other dimensions, offering truths beyond our perceptions. Others dream of what could be, mirror what is, or warn of what might yet come.

Every motif, character, and setting has an express purpose.

“Walking through ‘Fantastic Realities’ is like traveling through a series of alternate universes,” says Ellen Owens, AVAM’s executive director. “Each of the 24 artists share such a vastly different perspective on our human experience — some

dystopian, some playful, and all incredibly magnetic and complex.”

Anchored by in-depth installations of artists such as Cuong “Mike” Tran, Promethea, fka Maura Holden, and Baltimore-based Junius Wilson, “Fantastic Realities” will also highlight standout works from our permanent collection, including that of Antar Mikosz, Stephanie Lucas, Chris Mars, Romaine Samworth, and Mona Webb.

“With a blend of video, poetry, and prose to offer direct insights from the artists themselves, this exhibition merges the vivid imagination of visionaries with striking insights into our contemporary world with the aim of prompting deeper deep reflection on the nature of ‘truth’ during a time of increasing uncertainty,” according to the museum.

Owens envisions visitors will “carefully consider how these pieces reflect our current realities, joys, and concerns as we collectively question: what does our future hold?”

Rewarding her for her work in “Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous,” yes, that I could see. But this?! No, ma’am.

• Rami Malek in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Best Actor, 2018 Speaking of Oscar-winning performances that benefited from success at the box office, that’s the only explanation I can come up with for why Malek won for this, because he is very

bad in this biopic of Queen singer Freddie Mercury.

First off, Malek looks nothing like Mercury, and the filmmakers didn’t help him by giving him a nasty wig they bought on Temu to wear for most of the film and prosthetic teeth that they probably stole from the “Austin Powers” set.

Secondly, Malek captures absolutely none of the glamour and mystique that the real Mercury had; it feels more like Malek is imitating Jimmy Fallon’s impression of Mick Jagger.

And lastly, do not get me started on his British accent, which is nigh incomprehensible in those crazy fake teeth. On the

That was the awful Mexican musical from last year that basically no one liked but inexplicably became an awards show favorite.

Well, I’m sorry to remind you of it again, just as it had begun to seep into the back of your subconscious, but it’s not even a year out from the most recent ceremony and it is still embarrassing that the Oscars were so into this awful movie.

The chance of “Emilia” getting more trophies were probably stymied by its myriad controversies (from the lead star’s old racist tweets resurfacing to nearly all of Mexico condemning the film).

But it still picked up awards for Best Song and Saldaña’s performance.

And though Saldaña isn’t the worst thing about the film, the best I can say about her is that she comes out of it relatively unscathed.

(She is also part of the only good song in the film, “La Vaginoplastia,” which is an unhinged bop.)

But that’s the thing about a number of these unworthy Oscar-winning performances — at their core, they’re not bad, just wholly unremarkable.

But that’s the thing you have to put up with when dealing with the Academy Awards: If you want to follow along with it, you gotta get used to the fact that mostly mediocrity is awarded (which is also true for a lot of things in life).

Nothing says party like an enticing cupcake.

This easy Christmas-themed recipe is sure to delight all your guests.

INGREDIENTS Makes 12 cupcakes • 1 ½ cups flour • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • ½ teaspoon salt • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup icing sugar • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided • 2 eggs, at room temperature • ¾ cup milk • 2 tablespoons white sugar • 2 cups 35% heavy whipping cream • 1 cup fresh cranberries • A few sprigs of fresh rosemary

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.

2. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

3. In another bowl, cream the butter and icing sugar together with an electric hand mixer until light and fluffy (about two to three min­utes). Add the vanilla. Incorporate the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, alternating between the two.

5. Pour the mixture into the 12 prepared muffin cups.

6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a muffin comes out clean. Let cool completely before decorating.

7. Meanwhile, pour the white sugar into the cream and beat with an electric hand mixer until stiff peaks form. Top the cupcakes with whipped cream, cranberries and rosemary, arranging the rosemary to resemble holly.

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Line two cookie sheets with parch­ment paper.

3. In another bowl, cream the butter, white sugar and brown sugar together using an electric hand mixer until the mixture is light and fluffy (about two to three minutes). Add the vanilla. Incorporate the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternat­ing between the two. Add the chocolate chips.

Mix until evenly distributed.

5. Using a one-tablespoon scoop, place the cookie dough on the baking sheets, spacing them about five centimetres apart.

6. Bake on the middle rack, one sheet at a time, for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centres are still soft. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for two minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.

INGREDIENTS Servings: 4 • One butternut squash, peeled and cubed • 3 tablespoons butter • ½ cup 35% heavy whipping cream • ½ teaspoon garlic powder • ½ teaspoon onion powder • Salt and pepper, to taste • Pumpkin seeds, for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. In a large pot, bring four litres of salted water to a boil. Add the squash cubes and cook for about 20 minutes, or until the squash is tender. Drain.

2. Add the butter, cream and seasonings to the squash cubes. Using a potato masher, mash until smooth and uniform.

3. Serve in a pretty bowl and garnish with pumpkin seeds.
