MIKE KUSTER’S WAMMIE NOMINATIONS STACK UP

When the Washington, D.C.-area’s Wammie Awards released their 2025-2026 nominations, Frederick’s Mike Kuster appeared across five categories, a recognition spanning country/Americana artistry, songwriting and visual storytelling. His nominations include Best Country/Americana Artist, plus nods for songs “Fifty” and “Friend Zone” in that same category, with “Friend Zone” earning an additional Best Music Video honor. His first bluegrass release, “Distant Trains,” produced by IBMA and Grammy Award-winning musician Michael Cleveland, landed in Best Folk/Bluegrass Song. Public voting to determine finalists runs through Jan. 15 at wammiesdc.awardsplatform.com, and only the top five nominees advance to finalist judging. Fans can vote daily, making their case for which artists deserve finalist recognition.

ENGINEERING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT, ONE CANDY CANE AT A TIME

When Jason Matusiak repurposes windshield wiper motors and car seat buttons to create interactive holiday displays, he’s not just decorating; he’s orchestrating a local attraction. Visit 515 Isaac Russell St. in New Market any evening through Dec. 25 between 5 and 9:30 p.m., and you’ll discover what happens when electrical engineering meets holiday whimsy. Push a button for a free candy cane (the Matusiaks refilled their dispenser with 1,521 pieces last year). Crank a handle to measure your Christmas spirit on a light-up meter. Call Santa on a retro rotary phone. The pièce de résistance? A 12-foot Grinch, i.e., their Halloween skeleton transformed through Michelle Matusiak’s custom sewing, which looms over the yard like a benevolent Dr. Seuss giant.

THE FREDERICK MUSIC SCENE IS DUE FOR A RESURGENCE

Wave theory applies to more than physics. It’s a useful framework for understanding Frederick’s cyclical music ecosystem, where collective energy crests and falls as bands form, dissolve or get pulled toward Baltimore and D.C.’s gravitational force. While one wave arguably peaked around 2018 (followed by that pandemic-sized asterisk), another appears to be forming. The evidence arrives with events like the Dec. 19 YAAC Show at the Y Arts Center, where host Dewey Stewart will interview the 72 Film Fest team fresh off their 20th festival, and BIKES will perform. Later that evening comes the Snally House Acoustic Showcase, marking the return of house shows to Frederick, a format sorely missed since Sketchy Shed went dark. Dec. 20 brings more sonic adventures at the Sandbox with Daryltron’s electronic R&B alongside headliner Austin Litz’s Crypto Wave Radio.

COASTING THROUGH CHRISTMAS

Rail bikes — those people-powered vehicles used since the 1900s for work commutes and track maintenance — have been reimagined as recreational transport, and this winter they’re getting a holiday makeover. New this year, Western Maryland’s Tracks and Yaks presents the Mountain Christmas Light Delight, which lets you rail-bike 2.5 miles through Frostburg’s scenic mountains along the Great Allegheny Passage, passing more than 100 light displays. This is Maryland’s only rail bike operation, and the experience is decidedly low-stakes: You’re connected in groups of five to six bikes, a guide sets the pace on the front bike, and gravity does the work as you coast slowly downhill (i.e., no pedaling required!). Tickets are $25 per seat at tracksandyaks.com. After your descent, Tracks and Yaks shuttles you back to the historic Frostburg Depot, where The Olde Depot Christmas Market awaits. WHEN DID YOUR BUSINESS OPEN IN FREDERICK?

The Keeney & Basford Funeral Home, P.A. was established by John Garrison Etchison in 1848. Originally called M.R. Etchison and Son, the establishment had several different locations in downtown Frederick – including East Patrick and North Market Street addresses before moving into its current location at 106 East Church Street in 1939.

The building that now houses the funeral home is known as the Trail Mansion.

Built in 1852 by Col. Charles E. Trail, it is a beautiful example of classic Italianate architecture. Of particular note are the front entrance area, the Italian-designed windows and marble fireplaces, and the elaborate ceilings similar to those found in large 19th c. European estates.

For nearly 125 years, the funeral home was owned and operated by the Etchison family with the help of one employee, Frank R. Smith. After the retirement of A. Hart and Marjorie Etchison in 1971, the firm was sold to Frank R. Smith, Donald M. Fadeley, Robert W. Keeney and Richard C.C. Basford.

Rick Graf and Keith Roberson, are long-time Keeney & Basford employees who assumed ownership in 2007 until 2022, continued the business based on a history of compassion for and dedication to the Frederick community. Greg and Debbie Rollings purchased the funeral home in 2022 and continue the Keeney and Basford traditions.

Keeney and Basford Funeral Home is the longest, continually-operating facility and funeral home in Frederick County.

Snallygaster’s Cafe and Wine Bar in Bolivar, West Virginia

The Snallygaster’s Cafe and Wine Bar offers an eclectic range of fare in a historic Appalachian setting.

Named for the mythical beast said to haunt Maryland’s Middletown Valley, Snallygaster’s is situated in a former general store built in the 1890s in Bolivar, West Virginia, about 25 minutes from Frederick.

Owner Carrie Gauthier said when she and her husband opened the restaurant in 2020, they peeled back layers of linoleum and other modern finishings to expose the building’s historic wood surfaces.

In addition to a full cafe and bar menu, Snallygaster’s offers a food menu for all times of day.

The Bolivar Breakfast consists of two fried eggs, bacon, lettuce and tomato on bread with home fries and fruit. The lunch menu sandwiches are a classic Italian, a turkey BLT, roast beef and a mushroom and brie. An antipasto board comprised of cured meats, artisanal cheeses, fresh fruits, pesto, nut and pickled vegetables tops their list of six appetizer options. The sausage, greens and beans meal on the dinner entree menu is presented as a “classic Appalachian dish” served over polenta. Cheesecake and apple pie a la mode are available for dessert.

The return of the house show (and Larval Organs live among us!)

There’s plenty happening in Frederick’s live music scene right now — but first, a little context.

Wave theory isn’t just for physics; it’s also a useful way to think about Frederick’s music ecosystem. The scene tends to move in cycles, with collective musical energy cresting and falling as bands form, dissolve, relocate or stop making music altogether.

From a glass-half-empty perspective, one might ask why things are never just constantly “popping off” here. The short answer is a mix of factors: a lack of truly viable music venues, age restrictions tied to antiquated liquor laws and the gravitational pull of D.C. and Baltimore siphoning off younger artists.

From a glass-half-full perspective, Frederick remains a blank canvas — one where musicians, bands and independent promoters continue to find creative ways to put on stellar shows.

In that light, while one wave arguably crested around 2018 (followed by a large, pandemic-sized asterisk), another wave appears to be forming on the horizon. Whether it can be sustained remains to be seen.

With that in mind, here are some shows to put on your radar.

5:30 p.m. Dec. 19 — The YAAC Show returns at the Y Arts Center. This relatively new live talk show is hosted

by Dewey Stewart, who will interview the legendary 72 Film Fest team fresh off the conclusion of their 20th festival in October. The evening will also include a live performance by BIKES, the electronic pop/hip-hop duo of Ricole Barnes and Eric Moss French. They recently dropped a new single, “Skymall,” an undeniable earworm. 115 E. Church St. Doors at 5 p.m. $15 at the door.

7 p.m. to midnight 5:30 p.m.

— Later that night comes the Snally House Acoustic Showcase, presented

by Braindead Live. This event marks the return of house shows in Frederick, a format sorely missed since Sketchy Shed went dark last year. The lineup includes Ghost Voice, Swamp Whompers, Georgia Rae Braun, Larval Organs, Portside Chapel and Real Baby Lord, all unplugging for an attentive, listening-first audience. Jeremiah Johnson, frontman for Portside Chapel and Snallyfest founder, explained the appeal of the format: “It’s a way to have a more

While every act on the bill is worth your time, Larval Organs deserves special attention. Fronted by Dan Penta, the band offers a fascinating snapshot of a Brooklyn ex-pat now living in near anonymity in Frederick. Remarkably, New York Music Daily once wrote of Penta, “Back in 2004 … the Larval Organs (when that iteration was a punk/ metal group) were one of New York’s hottest bands.” Over time, Penta shifted sounds and band names, eventually running in the same circles as New York City’s Antifolk community, including artists like Moldy Peaches’ Kimya Dawson.

By 2016, Penta was performing under the name Jagged Leaves — signed to the Frostburg/Frederick-based Yellow K Records — when New York Music Daily described him as “one of the world’s most criminally underappreciated songwriters.” A few years later, Penta relocated to Frederick and reformed Larval Organs in its current iteration. Active since 2023, the band has played several shows locally, including Snallyfest in the fall. Last month, they released the EP “Xringe,”

a blistering blend of garage rock and indie fuzz-pop.

So yes — an underground New York figure really is now slaying in the Frederick underground.

One thing to know about house shows: The address is intentionally kept secret, adding to the speakeasy-style adventure. While there are usually multiple modern ways to uncover the location, for this particular show the address will be sent after purchasing a ticket at tickettailor.com/ events/braindeadlive.

7 p.m. to midnight Dec. 20 — Saturday night’s destination is the Sandbox, the unofficial home base for Braindead Live. The bill features an eclectic mix of DJs, solo performers and electronic acts. Dan Gellerman (when not playing guitar for Litz) will spin a house/breaks/techno DJ set. Daryltron, who just released a video for “Ain’t No Messin Around,” brings his distinctive electronic R&B approach. Also appearing is innovative live electronic band B4WE8, who reportedly “destroyed” the Eagles Club during the Snallyfest afterparty. Headlining the night is Austin Litz’s solo project, Crypto Wave Radio, an

EDM-leaning pivot from the jam band/ funk sound of his main project, Litz.

Consumer Culture recently played Metro Baltimore with SLOT, a heavy pop duo featuring former Frederick residents Max Detrich and Abby Chapple.

Jan. 9 — Live hip hop returns to Frederick with Demetrius, L.E.A.N., Soberlijj and Culture Truss at Cafe 611.

New EPs and LPs Demetrius recently released his new EP, “The High Dive,” on Dec. 3.

He’s not the only local rapper with fresh material: Ahzay dropped his latest LP, “You Do You, I Do Me,” on Dec. 2. Meanwhile, 2024 Wammie winner Asa Weeks released his new single, “Old Ways Away,” on Dec. 4. All music mentioned in Frederick Liner Notes is available to stream on all major platforms.

Eileen Ivers’ ‘Joyful Christmas’ makes the Weinberg Stage merry and bright

Eileen Ivers first spotted her treasured blue violin through the window of Manny’s Music on West 48th Street in Manhattan. The nowclosed music shop was once a hub for musicians, and Ivers, a native of the Bronx, knew it well.

The Barcus Berry electric violin caught her eye, and the young musician, about 18 years old at the time, went in to give it a try. When the violin was connected to pedals, she saw the true capacity for sound that the instrument contained.

“I was like a kid in a candy store,” Ivers recalled. “I couldn’t believe the palette of sounds you could get from this. I walked out of there with that blue violin, all these pedals, completely broke and super happy. Completely obnoxious at all the bar gigs I did that weekend.”

Unlike past iterations of the holiday, Ivers noted, no wrens are harmed in the observance.

This December will not be the first performance in the Weinberg Center for Ivers, who said she is excited to return to such a beautiful performance space. Audiences can expect to see the rousing collaboration of a band who have played multiple decades together, but audiences will also have the opportunity to experience just how many sounds and layers can be made from one blue violin.

“I love the violin and all it can do,” she said. “It could be that lonesome slow air or basically fiddle and minimal accompaniment, that draws you in.

But it could also be that really uplifting joyous, percussive, rhythmic, amazing sound that can really get to the heart of people, which is a beautiful thing to see. I love all of it.”

An engineer in New Market is sparking joy The ‘Tooz family Christmas’ interactive display, open to the public, collects items to donate to Frederick’s food bank

Most families get into the Christmas spirit by decorating their front yard with inflatable reindeer or LED string lights purchased from Lowes.

Not the Matusiak family.

New Market resident Jason Matusiak has taken his background in electrical engineering and IT to impressive heights in creating an interactive holiday display where the community is welcome to visit their front yard any night between 5 and 9:30 p.m. through Christmas Day. When you walk up to 515 Isaac Russell St. in New Market, you wouldn’t know the displays are powered by motors from a windshield wiper and a car’s button to move the seat up and back. But that’s just the start of this handmade set up.

Some of the features include pushing a button to get a free candy cane, cranking a handle to rate your Christmas spirit on a light-up meter, calling the Santa Hotline on a retro, red rotary phone, watching mechanical scenes of classic tales in display boxes, and more.

Jason’s wife, Michelle, said they filled the candy cane dispenser last year with 1,521 candy canes, adding that they “go out there numerous times a night to refill it.”

In the back corner, you can’t miss their 12 foot Grinch standing over the yard. The Matusiaks repurposed their skeleton from Halloween and turned him into likely the tallest Grinch in the county. Michelle custom sewed a festive outfit to fit over the skeleton, creating this mammoth Dr. Seuss character from Whoville.

The S“elf”ie Station is new this year, and it’s tempting past visitors to return.

Even though my family has visited multiple times in the past, we had to go back this season and take some selfies.

Visitors can download the photos they take right to their phone’s camera roll for no charge.

To say the Matusiak family goes all out for Christmas would be an understatement. Visit their home in New Market and bring the kids — and also nonperishable food items to donate to the food bank.

When asked if they plan to expand the holiday display, the Matusiaks quickly answered in the positive. Maybe in future years, the TooZ Family Christmas will feature a robotic talking-back tree or a monorail.

TooZ, by the way, is a play on the family’s last name, Matusiak.

There’s nothing like this place, and it only requires a quick stop of 5-10 minutes to enjoy everything.

“Everything is powered by a Raspberry Pi running about 2,500 lines of custom Python code,” Jason shared. (That’s fancy talk for “this place is so cool.”)

If your kids write letters to Santa Claus,

bring them to the TooZ Family Christmas display. The family has repurposed an old Crown Royal mailbox unit into a litup Santa’s mailbox, and the bottom of it doubles as a drop-off box for canned good donations.

In 2024, the Matusiak family dropped off about 977 pounds of food to local food banks. This year, they hope to surpass that.

Monetary donations to the food bank are sometimes also left in the drop box.

Both non-perishable food items and donations are greatly appreciated, and 100% of donations go to the Frederick food bank.

The family also hosts a “Cookies with Santa” event each December, inviting families to see their display, meet Santa,

enjoy some treats and get crafty, as there’s a table for kids to create some keepsakes to take home.

“It’s a staple in our community and a tradition for our family that provides the feeling of Christmas magic while also reminding us to give back,” said Rachel Rollins, a mother of three who lives in Ijamvsille.

Whether visiting to test your Christmas spirit or support an engineer and his fun ideas, a visit is sure to bring you joy this season while benefiting local neighbors and friends in need.

During my brief visit with the family, there’s no doubt the Matusiak children, Noel, 13, and Joe, 10, are their dad’s No. 1 fans — and also his helpers.

New holiday excursion: Railbiking in the mountains through Christmas lights

If you think the only thing that belongs on a railroad track is a train, think again. Railbiking is a relatively new experience for many, and the peoplepowered vehicle is taking off in Maryland with a Christmas twist this year.

Rail bikes have been used on railroad tracks since the 1900s, but not for leisure. Rail bikes were simply designed as a way to move up and down the tracks for working purposes or as a risky but necessary way to commute.

Only in recent years has railbiking been seen as something fun, and vacant steel railroad tracks have been converted into recreational trails for people to pedal on, almost like riding on a small, open car with no steering wheel.

In Maryland, the only rail bike operator is Tracks and Yaks, an excursion company in Frostburg that offers modern rail bike tours through the scenic mountains of Western Maryland following the Great Allegheny Passage.

In ‘Left-Handed Girl,’ surrender to one of the world’s cutest child actors

It’s fitting that, as millions of Americans travel home for the holidays, a stunner of a Taiwanese movie dropped on Netflix, offering escape to a world of neon lights and night markets, moped rides and drunken romance.

What better way to avoid your own family than to cozy up with this one — three generations of women so accustomed to hustling for survival that even the cutest little girl in the world feels compelled to engage in some incredibly cute petty theft?

“Left-Handed Girl” is the first solo feature from “Anora” director Sean Baker’s longtime collaborator ShihChing Tsou, and Taiwan’s submission to the 98th Academy Awards. And even the opening credits raise a hint of mystery. Names play out across the bright colors of a kaleidoscope being wielded by 5-year-old I-Jing (Nina Ye), our adorable, unreliable narrator. “It feels like a magical place,” she says, as her family’s minivan speeds toward their new home in Taipei.

The looks on the faces of her mother and college-age sister suggest a more complicated reality, but the joy of this film is seeing so much of it through I-Jing’s unjaded eyes.

Taipei really does seem magical when experienced by someone 3 feet tall.

Our trio seems to be starting over from rock bottom. Their minimalist new apartment is smaller than the one they were forced to leave, we learn, because the girls’ father abandoned them. Their perpetually cashedstrapped mother, Shu-Fen (veteran actress Janel Tsai) is trying her hand at opening a noodle stand in the night market. Rebellious I-Ann (sensational acting discovery Shih-Yuan Ma), decides there’s better money to be had at one of Taipei’s ubiquitous betel nut stands, as one of the scantily clad “beauties” selling the addictive stimulant to taxi drivers from neon-lit roadside stands. She also sometimes lets her deadbeat boss have sex with her, with all the enthusiasm of checking her email.

Meanwhile, a blissfully unaffected I-Jing gets to use the night market as her personal playground, running around with an abandon that would

The turning point for our tiny heroine comes when her superstitious grandfather chastises her for using her left hand, telling her it’s “the devil’s hand.” Shame keeps I-Jing up at night, until she decides to put her evil appendage to use, going on shoplifting sprees around the market, and amassing a pile of trinkets and toys her family would never be able to afford. She’s not doing anything wrong; her devil-hand is!

The sequences are exhilarating, shot at her eye level, with just the right freneticism to feel I-Jing’s adrenaline from her newfound illicit hobby pulsating through the screen. But there’s a pernicious sadness to the shenanigans, in how early this little girl is taught to think her differences make her flawed.

This movie has been 25 years in the making. Tsou was essentially I-Jing — her grandfather shamed her for using her left hand, and like many girls in Taiwan, she was reeducated to use her right hand. While they were students at the New School in New York, Tsou told Baker the story, and the two of them traveled to Taipei in 2001,

eager to map out a movie but unable to figure out the financing. Instead, they co-directed 2004’s “Take Out.” Tsou’s since produced Baker’s features “Starlet,” “Tangerine,” “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket.” Baker returned the favor as a producer on “Left-Handed Girl,” which he co-wrote with Tsou and also edited.

Centering a film on a child is often a recipe for disaster, or at least cheesiness. But Tsou and Baker already had practice depicting a heartbreaking loss of innocence in “The Florida Project.” This film is sweeter, and far less harrowing, but it has the same nonjudgmental gaze and the vérité camera stylings, even though Baker was shooting “Anora” during production and never set foot on set. The film’s dazzling visuals are all Tsou — she set up a working noodle stand in the real Tonghua Night Market and ran around with a skeleton team of five so as not to attract attention, creating incredible lived-in cinematography, captured all on location and using only iPhones.

Every frame bursts with life. But what really elevates the story are the darker themes peeking in. Every woman on-screen is scrambling to scrape together a living, including Shu-Fen’s mother, who’s running a light passport-fraud ring out of her living room, in a society that still favors

men — no matter how undeserving they may be or how badly they fail.

(The one bright spot is Johnny, the fanny-pack-wearing doofus, played with endearing sweetness by Teng-Hui Huang, who runs a stand next to ShuFen’s selling magic erasers and phone chargers, and who’s clearly in love with her.)

Most intriguing is Ma’s portrayal of I-Ann. Recently awarded best new performer at the Golden Horse Awards (the Mandarin-language equivalent of the Academy Awards), she’s a model who Tsou found on Instagram and is a riveting natural. Her character is the embodiment of how these women have the cards stacked against them — too old to be innocent, too young to carry this much weight.

A shocking revelation rearranges the viewer’s brain about her anger toward the men in her life.

In the end, the movie’s title feels less like a descriptor than a battle cry.

In “Left-Handed Girl,” Tsou has made a love letter to nonconformists, and to the freedom one can feel when you simply stop caring about who the world wants you to be.

year after opening East Main Trains in downtown Thurmont, lifelong hobbyists John Hamilton and Jeff Crum have turned a vacant storefront into a destination for model train enthusiasts, reviving a pastime that had all but disappeared from the area.

Hamilton, of Frederick, and his business partner, Crum, of Woodsboro, opened the store just in time for Thurmont’s 2024 Colorfest weekend.

Hamilton and Crum had been passionate enthusiasts, active in the model train hobby since they were little kids, though they didn’t know each other then.

Hamilton met Crum many years ago. Crum was a contractor Hamilton hired to remodel his kitchen and through conversation learned they both had the same passion for model trains.

Fast forward 10 years, and the two reconnected on another home remodeling project and conversation about the train hobby ensued. They learned that one of the few remaining model train stores in Mount Airy was closing — if no one stepped up to buy it.

“That sparked the ‘what if’ conversation around us going in as partners and buying the business.

Although the purchase of that business never worked out, it motivated us to look elsewhere and open our own,” Hamilton said.

Thurmont had a model train store for 25 years that closed in 2015.

Hamilton and Crum knew the area would be a great location.

“Our vision is simple,” Hamilton said. “Help keep the hobby alive and introduce the next generation of kids into the wonderful world of electric model trains. Although more shopping is done online, people still enjoy being able to touch and see [trains] in person. We believe there is enough demand for a retail store to succeed in the model train hobby.”

Through a business development program in Thurmont, Hamilton and Crum were able to acquire a vacant building downtown, which promised to be the perfect storefront for their venture.

“My first impression of the building when I saw it was that it needs a lot of work, but it had a charming, old-

vision to transform a gutted vacant building to a beautiful train store. In the meantime, Hamilton picked up the rest and figured out what it would take to establish themselves as a retail business.

“With some great advice from a former train store owner in Thurmont, we managed to pull it off and opened our doors in October 2024.

The community support has been wonderful, and business is doing better than we ever dreamed. We sell both in store and online, which has proven to be good for us,” Hamilton said.

On opening weekend, the turnout confirmed the demand, with customers traveling from surrounding areas to reconnect with a hobby many had missed.

The store welcomes kids of all ages to come and see the trains running in East Main Trains’ window or inside in the back of the store.

Crum has also noticed a strong multi-generational presence in the shop. Families regularly stop in together, with parents and grandparents purchasing starter sets to introduce children to the hobby. At the same time, seasoned collectors, some with decades of experience, also continue to visit, drawn by nostalgia and new technological advancements.

Looking ahead, Crum said their goals over the next five years are the continued increase in sales, expansion of inventory and renovating their second floor space into additional store space.

East Main Trains also continues to grow its digital presence by selling products online through its website.

“We will continue to add new

products and stay current on the latest and greatest new products,” Crum said.

Crum believes technology has helped keep the hobby relevant for younger generations, explaining appbased systems like WTIU by MTH allows users to control trains with realistic sounds, smoke and functions.

“For our younger operators, it comes as second nature, since they have been raised in a world of technology,” Crum said. “Having the ability with the new WTIU technology gives new life to the hobby.”

The store also supports the broader model train community. Crum said East Main Trains has a traveling train display they use at Christmas. “We set it up for a local train club, and they operate it for the public.”
