PROJECT UPDATE FROM SEASONS AT NORTH AURORA
From Supply Chain Issues to Saving Trees By Peter Todd and Ryan Greve Seasons at North Aurora is one of our newest developments in the Chicagoland area and broke ground in September of 2022. Because this project started later in the year, the site required an extensive amount of lime stabilization. In other words, we had to treat approximately 26,000 cubic yards of material, so we could compact and build on top of structural fill (soil). By utilizing this strategy, we were able to get ahead of the cold weather and work continuously throughout the 2022/2023 winter season. Surprisingly, we are still facing critical supply chain challenges. Particularly, electrical equipment on all our projects has extended lead times from just over a month to 60 weeks. Working through these challenges requires the team to utilize generators and pressure manufacturers to give us reliable commitments and a better understanding of solutions. As always, we find ways to problem solve and keep these projects moving forward. On another positive note, we saved a longstanding tree from being razed. It does not sound like much, but our neighbors to the west of this property have grown attached to this tree. The root system grew across the property line and was in the way of sidewalks, storm structures, and other facilities. Local lore has asserted that this tree is over 275 years old. Personally, we found this very hard to believe and wanted to cut it down to count the yearly rings to just prove them wrong. But as luck would have it, we were able to adjust planning and avoid root damage that would have almost certainly killed this local icon. The first apartment turnover at Seasons at North Aurora is scheduled for end of summer 2023, with completion of the entire project scheduled for fall 2024. This property provides the same layouts and amenities of our Seasons product lines, with (13) 20-unit buildings for a total of 260 apartment units, as well as a Clubhouse.

DIVERSITY FEATURE FRED HONORS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH We Are Here to Stay
By Kate Manthe, Property Manager, Creekwood You have heard of Cleopatra, Harriet Tubman, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, and Oprah, and yet despite their grit, women have spent centuries fighting for equal rights. Voting granted in 1920. Pay inequality unprohibited until 1963. Equal education rights not granted until 1972. Credit cards unprinted without the presence of a male name until 1974. Despite the vast limitations on women, they have pioneered the greatest advances throughout history, no corner of the world left untouched. When it comes to our health, technology, environmental conservation, politics, war, and our source of courage, women have always been behind the curtain. Reaching the stars, with Katherine Johnson’s figurations that would go on to map the first successful spaceflight of the USA. From the stars to the trees on earth, women, such as Julia Hill, have inhabited limbs of Redwoods for years in their protection. Nemonte Nenquimo took on the Ecuadorian government and won, saving 500,000 acres of the Amazon rainforest inhabited by the Waorani Tribe. The lives of bees saved by Mikaila Ulmer, who at age 10, opened a lemonade stand sweetened with honey, launching herself as a multimillionaire and donating 10% of all profits to bee survival along the way. Women have been a presence in war, Andreé Peel, saving over 20,000 lives in World War II for her efforts in the resistance. Alongside her, Julia Child developed deterrents to protect bombs planted in the sea; her role as a spy would go unnoted throughout her career as a “woman of the kitchen”. Women as a whole would not be labeled as combat soldiers until 2013, despite their long history fighting alongside men.
Some of the greatest technological advancements stem from women. Ada Lovelace developing computer programming, Hedy Lamar wireless technology, and Joy Boulamwini fought for security advancements behind facial recognition after discovering the technology fails to properly identify women. Many of these women went without recognition, however the courage of others would not be unseen; Joan Jett loved rock and roll, however her billboard hit in 1982 was not produced without a tireless fight in the male-dominated rock and roll industry. Jazz Jennings faced hate at the highest levels after the first trans doll had been modeled after her. And Ibtinaj Muhammad would not go unnoticed as the first US athlete wearing a hijab at the Olympics. Some would not be able to see this courage without the medical device developed by Patricia Bath, responsible for conducting successful eye surgery and even restoring sight to blind patients. Despite education gaps, women in the medical field would go on to develop treatments behind notable diseases, such as leprosy treated by Alice Ball, one if the first women to graduate with a master’s degree. We can thank some of the greatest political movements to women, Tereza Lee inspiring the DREAM ACT, protecting immigrants brought to America as children. You have read through 15 of women who have forever changed humankind, environmentally, economically, physically, and politically. How many were you familiar with? Strong, smart, innovative, powerful, and influential women have shaped our world and it appears as though we are here to stay.
GOOD NEWS YANNAH ROSENQUIST, Corporate At the end of November, we welcomed our son, Micah, to the family! He is starting to show his personality with big smiles and long “cooing” conversations. His big sister loves her brother and we are adjusting to the growing family dynamic.
HANNAH LASCO, Arbor Lakes I recently got engaged! I was having an early birthday party at the Domain Apartments and my fiancé, Eric, pulled off a surprise proposal! I was surrounded by some of my closest friends, it felt like a dream! I can't wait to marry my best friend!
MARC ROWNEY, The Woodlands Milwaukee Mental Health was very happy I was able to go over and give them a hand in February! I fixed numerous doors for them, helped plastic up some windows (pretty cold in there), and fixed their toilets which were leaking and running constantly. I helped put together a couple of book shelves and a medical cabinet which took way longer than it should’ve (haha)! MMH wants to say thank you for giving/paying me to go over and get them back up and running again!

The redesign has kept Arbor Lakes looking new and refreshed. Highlights of the redesign include new and upgraded community room tables, flooring, designer artwork, guest suite furniture, and upgraded fitness center flooring.

VONG LEE IT Operations Specialist Corporate I've been married for 3 years. My wife and I have a two-year and ten-month-old son, Greyson. On November 12th, 2022, our daughter Raina was born. Greyson is doing a good job so far being a big brother, helping where he can and giving out hugs to calm his sister when she’s crying for her bottle. Sometimes, a little too much help. Raina on the other hand is growing quickly and taking down a lot of formula that I’m afraid she'll start another epic formula shortage. In my free time, I enjoy picking up my son's toys and washing baby clothes and bottles! I look forward to spending time with family, getting out on the water to do some fishing, and challenging myself to learn how to fix and remodel housing projects.
SPOTLIGHT! January Winner
LAUREN ESSEX Cleaner | Valley View
Her role for us started with Cleaning/Utility and although she is still in this current role, she expressed her interest in Maintenance so we started teaching her everything; Carlos came along and helped us get more in depth with the boilers, plumbing, everything. Her knowledge and thirst for more is inspiring and incredible. She stepped up over all but on January 23, 2023, over at Fitchburg Square (the 2nd location we take care of), she stepped up without hesitation and lead. We got a call around 4:50pm - a major leak had started and the ceiling below was dripping and slowing coming down. The call came out over the walkie and I was at Valley View with the lead turning in work orders. We took off but she was at 2014 cleaning and sprinted into action, was already there removing the resident's stuff first then the drywall, then the water. She was the one talking to the resident like I usually would, reassuring them. She allowed me to find the leak in split secondary cause of her response. She not only helped with demo and clean up but then stayed after hours with me as my boiler buddy, she drained the system like a pro for the plumber and did everything as an experienced professional tech would. So I want to shout her out for stepping up and in because of her quick actions, work compassion she allowed for me to shift gears and get the water to stop and a plan for repair in place in record time. So much so the resident wasn't concerned or even upset about the leak. I just wanted her to know how important her versatility and training is to the success of both properties!
