1. Rejoicing isn’t just suggested - it’s commanded.
(Philippians 4:4) “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”
(Psalm 97:12) “Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!”
2. Rejoicing is a choice.
(Psalm 118:24) This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
(Habakkuk 3:18) “…yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.”
3. Rejoicing is in response to God’s Character and Salvation. It’s a response to His mercy.
(Psalm 31:7-8) I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; You have known the distress of my soul, and you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place.
Rejoicing is a response to God’s justice.
(Psalm 97:1-2) “The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice, let the many coastlands be glad! Clouds and thick da ness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.”
Rejoicing is a response to His salvation.
(1 Peter 1:8–9) “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”
(Luke 6:22-23) “Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.
Rejoice when hated, excluded, mocked, or slandered on account of the Son of Man, because it shows you:
Belong to Jesus (John 15:18)
You’re in good company.
Your reward is great in heaven. (2 Corinthians 4:17)
4. Rejoicing is rooted in eternity, not circumstances. (Luke 6:23) “Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven…”
5. Rejoicing is rooted in identity, not success. (Luke 10:20) “Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
