Preparation for Resurrection: New Water

Dr. Neil Epler

John 4:4-15 | March 8, 2026

Parallels in Jesus meeting with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

• Both were private conversations.

• Both were with advisaries.

• Jesus quickly changed both conversations from worldly to spiritual matters.

• Both took His message literally

• Jesus was not caught off guard.

• How did these conversations end up in John’s gospel?

Jesus and the woman at the well both had physical needs. (John 4:6-7)

Jesus meets her right where she is. (John 4:9)

Jesus moves the conversation from earthly to eternal. (John 4:10)

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Psalm 42:1-2 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?

She responds with worldly wisdom. (John 4:11)

(Zechariah 14:8) On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.

(Revelation 7:17) For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Jesus responds with spiritual wisdom. (John 4:13-14)

(Revelation 22:1-2) Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

The living water flows through us and from us. (John 4:15)

Come to the well.

(Isaiah 55:1) “Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.”

(Revelation 21:6) And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.”
