In His Steps: Surrendered Service

Dr. Chris Montgomery | Exodus 17:8-16 | Aug. 24, 2025

There is a difference between living a fully filled life and a fulfilled life.

(Exodus 17:8-16) The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9 Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’ 10 So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12 When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up – one on one side, one on the other – so that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13 So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.’ 15 Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16 He said, ‘Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.’

The myth of ministry and serving is that every prayer is answered just the way you want it and every action is miraculous.

The reality is that God calls us to ordinary tasks that have extraordinary results.

This is God’s way of reminding us that it is not our prayers and actions that have power, but it is His power through our prayers and actions.

Every serving opportunity is an opportunity to lift others up.

We must remember that life is not just hard, it is heavy.

Confess: God has used the Holy Spirit and other people to bring comfort into my chaos, and He will again.

Profess: God has used the Holy Spirit in me to bring comfort into the chaos of other people’s lives, and He will again.

(2 Corinthians 1:3-5) Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

We only waste our struggles and victories when we don’t share them.

Lie: Other people have never gone through what you are going through.

When you lift other people’s hands when they are in need, you will have people to lift your hands when you are in need.

When you choose to serve, you are positioning yourself in place to be able to lift others up.

Whose life will be either a little better or profoundly better, because you were present with them?
