WELCOME Welcome to the latest edition of the Fraser Yachts Superyacht Gallery, your guide to some of the best superyachts for sale and charter around the world, along with an insight into the latest market trends.

Whilst we have continued to sell and increase the number of yachts sold significantly for several years now, last year was the first time that the green shoots of recovery appeared to take hold for much of the industry, not just in the brokerage sector but also in new construction and other areas too. This is good news for everyone and I’m delighted to say that Fraser Yachts continues to lead this growth, as we once again sold significantly more yachts than any other brokerage company worldwide and continued to increase our lead in the number of yachts sold for the fourth year in a row.

2014 has continued this positive trend, with a number of significant in-house sales at the start of the year, such as the 59m ULYSSES and the 60m PARAFFIN. Clients continue to place their trust in us to sell their yachts with the arrival of the 67m Feadship WHITE CLOUD, the stunning 47m Heesen LADY PETRA, built for the founder of the shipyard, and the classic sailing yacht ALTAIR, into our sales fleet.

An eclectic mix of some of the world’s most renowned superyachts; proving that we are the experts across the full range of superyachts for sale and not just one niche area.

The story is also positive on the charter side, with bookings for the winter period already double those of 2013 and there are strong signs of a good summer season ahead as well. A number of new yachts have joined our fleet, including the 50m RIMA II recently refitted leaving her in top condition for charter guests to enjoy this summer; and HELIAD II, the first launch from the newly founded Lynx shipyard, designed with a traditional exterior in contrast to the stunning modern interior.

We have also continued to invest in our network around the world with new offices recently opened in Sydney and Singapore, plus the addition of a Ukrainian broker in our Monaco office; these new additions combined with our existing team of experts will allow us to offer you the best possible service in a location convenient to you.

MARKET

ANALYSIS BROKERAGE what trends have you noticed in the brokerage market in the last 18 months?

2013 saw the highest number of superyachts sold since the Global Financial Crisis began back in 2008, with over 350 superyachts sold (over 24m), compared to around 270 in 2012. This significant increase of 30% shows that the market is finally starting a sustained recovery.

The total value of the yachts sold in 2013 also increased (unlike 2012) although only by 17%, and this combined with the fact that the overall length of the yachts sold increased by 30% shows that not just yachts in the smaller segment were selling, but also yachts in the larger market which are of higher value. I.e. 60m+, where double the number of yachts sold in 2013 compared to 2012.

2014 also appears to have started in the same positive way, with a significantly higher, number of deals made in the first quarter compared to 2013. A good number of these deals were for yachts over 50m, where we have already reached the half way point of 2013 in terms of the number of yachts sold in that size range. This is a good indicator for the overall health of the market and will hopefully lead to even better figures for 2014.

how is the new construction market faring?

what is the impact of more yachts being built?

The New Construction market has also seen an increase in the number of new builds (over 24m) currently on order and this is the first time since 2009. In 2014 there were 735 yachts under construction compared with 692 the previous year, an increase of 6%. This is only a small increase however a significant point to note is that a substantial number of these new builds are in the larger yacht segment, with 19 projects over 100m in length currently under construction.

From a brokerage point of view an ever increasing number of superyachts means an ever larger market. Yachts are rarely destroyed or sold for scrap, and on occasion other vessels may be turned into yachts, therefore the size of the market will always get larger. Whilst there was only just over 1,000 superyachts in the world in 1974 today it has risen to over 9,000, with numbers increasing by more than 50% every decade.

Whilst many shipyards are still not running at full capacity the yards specialising in larger yachts, particularly in Northern Europe, are filling up their slots rapidly now and with fewer yachts being built on spec which means that clients are having to wait longer for new builds. This may be a factor in why the brokerage market in the larger segment has picked up as clients choose to buy an existing yacht rather than wait (or while they wait) for the new build to be delivered.

This means that sellers will have to be more realistic with their pricing as there is more competition. Owners will also have to be aware that as yachts get older they will devalue substantially as there are so many other options on the market, particularly production vessels where there can be a number of similar yachts produced. Owners will have to ensure good maintenance of their yachts to enable a good resale value when the time comes to move on.

CHARTER what trends have you noticed in the charter market this last year?

Whilst there is very little statistical industry data available on the charter market it appears that the general feeling of the majority of the reputable charter brokerage houses was that 2013 saw a continued increase in the market recovery.

Led by the Americans booking more charters in the Caribbean than the previous few years the positive feeling continued into the Mediterranean season where the majority of yachts over 40m had a number of weeks booked well in advance. Large yachts from reputable builders and run by crew with a good reputation were almost fully booked well before the season began.

The end of 2013 saw another successful season in the Caribbean, no doubt helped by the continued strengthening of the American economy. And the signs at the start of 2014 are also positive with many yachts in the 40-55m range almost fully booked for the summer.

However there is one small cloud on the horizon in the shape of the Russia/Ukraine crisis which may explain why there is still some availability on the larger yachts (over 60m) which are normally fully booked by the time the Mediterranean season begins.

are the latest tax regulations affecting the charter market?

Paying VAT on charter fees is now standard across most of Europe, although the rates can vary significantly based on the starting point and cruising locations. Recent additions to the EU such as Croatia currently charge much lower rates (and non-EU countries like Montenegro charge no VAT rate) than traditional destinations. This combined with the desire for people to explore new areas is seeing a slight increase in charters starting in Eastern Europe as opposed to the more traditional Riviera coastlines.

However these areas are not suffering significantly as it is possible to reduce the higher rates in certain countries by spending substantial time in international waters (normally 12nm offshore). An impact has been felt though on Event and Corporate charters (often static charters that do not leave port), e.g. the Cannes Film Festival, where for the first time in many years there were berths available during this normally oversubscribed event.

The regular updates, exceptions and the disparity of information provided has created a complex situation and charterers are advised to use an experienced and certified broker who has access to all the latest information, so that they can relax and enjoy their charter in confidence.
