Community Support Day participant information

June 27th RSPCA Burwood East Shelter

Thank you for your offer to help the animals at RSPCA Victoria. Community groups provide invaluable assistance to RSPCA Victoria by helping to care for abandoned, neglected or sick animals. Your offer of assistance at the shelter is very much appreciated.

Please read the important information below about what is expected of you as a participant on your upcoming RSPCA Victoria Community Support Day.

9:30 – 10.00 am

10:00 – 11am

11.00 – 12:30 pm

12:30 – 1.00 pm

1:00 – 1.30 pm

1:30 – 3:30 p.m.

3:30 – 3:45 p.m.

Participants arrive at main Welcome counter and are directed to Barkery Café

Meaningful work acrossdepartments

*Please note that these activities are subject to weather conditions, availability of certain animals and may change.

Participants must:

• be over 18 years of age. We are not able to accept any minors attending on the day;

• have a willingness to learn and work withanimals;

• have a positive and can-do attitude;

• have respect for all animals;

• not have a fear of animals;

• have a basic level of fitness and the capacity to undertake physical work such as walking dogs and cleaning animal enclosures;

• be willing and able to stand for periods of timeoutdoors, sometimes without shade.

Please let your organiser know if:

• you are pregnant;

• you have any allergies to animals;

• you have a fear of animals;

• you have any special needs on the day that RSPCA Victoria needs to know about.

We strongly encourage all participants to have:

• an up-to-date tetanus vaccination

• ambulance cover in case of an accident or injury

• Please note that if a volunteer does not have an up-to-date tetanus vaccination, they may be precluded from certain volunteering activities.

As a participant, you can expect:

•a RSPCA staff member to assist with your enquiries and provide necessary training for youractivities

•basic insurance cover for accidents while you are directly engaged in work with RSPCA Victoria

On the day, you will need to wear:

•clothes you are prepared to get dirty in

•closed-toe shoes for protection – no high-heels open top flats or thongs. Runners are ok.

•comfortable clothing (long pants and a shirt with short or long-sleeved top) that is easy to move around in. Please note that participants without closed shoes and long pants will not be able to enter the shelter.

What to bring:

•Sunscreen and hat

•a raincoat (weather dependent)

The RSPCA Victoria Burwood East Shelter is located at 3 Burwood Hwy, Burwood East, VIC, 3151

Parking

Car parking is very limited at the shelter, so we suggest you park at the Burwood Brickworks shopping centre on 70 Middleborough Rd. There is a short (approximately four- minute) walk to the shelter from the Burwood Brickworks carpark. You may also park in the surrounding streets, but please make sure to check signs for any parking restrictions. You may also park in the Woolworths carpark located across the street (time restrictions apply – 2-hour parking) so you will need to move your car before lunch break.

Public transport

You can take bus route 733 from Mount Waverley train station, bus route 732 from Box Hill train station or Tram route 75 from the city.

Please review the following Terms and Conditions for an RSPCA Victoria Community Support Day:

1. All participants must be 18 years old or over.

2. Participants must be willing to listen and comply with all instructions and advice given to them by RSPCA staff on the Community Support Day.

3. RSPCA Victoria reserves the right to refuse Community Support Day participation to any person in the following circumstances:

• The person is intoxicated, hungover or otherwise under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs;

• The person demonstrates behaviour or language that is discriminatory, offensive or prejudiced towards other people based on race, gender, sexual orientation and/or religion;

• The person demonstrates behaviour that RSPCA Victoria staff deem to be dangerous to other people and/or animals.

4. Participants must agree to focus on safety and to do their best to ensure the safety of themselves, other participants, and the staff and animals at the shelter.

5. Although RSPCA Victoria has basic insurance cover, you must have an appropriate level of cover for accidents and injuries that a participant may be able to claim should they become injured while taking part in the Community Support Day at RSPCA Victoria.

6. By agreeing to assist at the RSPCA Victoria shelter, participants have indicated that they are physically capable of undertaking a variety of duties as outlined in this information form, are able and willing to follow instructions, and can work both independently and as part of a team.

7. The participant has successfully completed the dog and cat handling learning module prior to attending the day.

8. Each participant consents to the publication and/or use in any form of media whatsoever of their name, image, statements or persona in any context pertaining to their volunteering with RSPCA Victoria whether for advertising, promotions or otherwise for no fee or remuneration.

9. The participant agrees and acknowledges that any information provided by volunteers is being collected by the RSPCA Victoria in accordance with the RSPCA Victoria Privacy Policy.

10. Each participant warrants that the medical information that they have provided is accurate and that if they become aware of any medical condition or impairment that will be detrimental to their health if they volunteer with RSPCA Victoria, or are otherwise sick or injured prior to volunteering, they will notify RSPCA Victoria.

11. The participant must not disclose any of RSPCA Victoria’s commercial, confidential or sensitive information to any person. This includes information in relation to commercial contracts, policies, strategies, procedural and financial matters, intellectual property and copyright and private information about departmental personnel or other volunteers that they may have access to in their volunteer role with RSPCA Victoria.

Medical & Dietary

Please list any medical conditions you have, any medication you are currently taking, and any special needs or requirements you may have that RSPCA Victoria should be aware of including dietary requirements for catering. Please note that this is in case of emergency, and to ensure as much as possible that we do not place you in a position in which your health and safety may be put at risk. Role allocation will also accommodate as far as possible any specific requests you may have e.g., if you need to keep out of the sun or are pregnant.
