Stay Connected in 2020!

It is an absolute pleasure to welcome you to Brookhaven Neighbourhood News as we start our second year of publication. This year brings about changes, as our Community Development Manager Sian Buchanan shifts her focus to her newborn baby girl and hands me the exciting responsibility of fostering connectedness amongst the Brookhaven community.

So, what makes Brookhaven so special? In the past two months I’ve witnessed a welcoming and supportive community online and offline, committed to building a safe, caring and connected community that takes pride in their homes and environment.

NEIGHBOURHOOD NEWS

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Discovery Park open for all Discovery Park, our newest recreation area, opened to the community before Christmas.

The park features a kick around area on the grass, a slide, rope play, basket swing, bubblers and shelters with seating.

A lot of existing trees have been retained which offers ample shade throughout the day. It has been wonderful to see residents and their kids using the park equipment and taking advantage of what this beautiful space has to offer.

We have also been working closely with Council who have approved the delivery of another 5,000sqm park south of the Parkview Releases. We are in the early stages of designing the park and

are excited to deliver another stunning recreation area to the Brookhaven community in the future.

Construction of the Prangley Road upgrade was completed before Christmas and is accessible to vehicles, while the intersection of Brookhaven Boulevard and Prangley Road is still under construction with an expected completion date of mid-2020.

Meanwhile, Hillside 3 and 4 are also under construction and progressing very well. We’re expecting the releases to be completed by mid-2020.

MEET THE LOCALS

Bee One Third

From small scale beginnings in 2012 with one hive in his mum’s backyard, Jack Stone and Bee One Third now manage over 170 hives across 22 locations.

Here, Jack discusses the important role bees play.

Tell us about Bee One Third – Pollinating Change.

What are the different roles of bees in the hive?

We place European honeybees in urban, peri-urban and coastal environments across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, producing artisan neighbourhood honey and supporting pollination systems. Our mission is to reconnect communities with the reality of what pollinators do for food production. We educate consumers on the importance of bees in food systems and the need to support local growers.

Female worker bees make up 90% of the colony. Workers feed the young, clean, build comb, forage for resources, make honey and defend the hive. Male drone bees make up about 10% of the colony. Their job is to fertilise a young queen from another colony. Drones do not make honey or wax and cannot sting. Every colony needs a fertilised Queen bee (just one!) to lay eggs.

Why are bees (and beekeepers) so important?

What can residents plant in their gardens to help pollinators?

Honeybees and other pollinators play a critical role in global food security and nutrition, contributing to over one-third of our global food supply through pollination. Bees pollinate about 90 food crops humans eat and many crops that feed farm livestock. Beekeepers are sometimes called Australia’s forgotten farmers. Honey and other hive products generate around $100 million per year in Australia. The contribution of honeybees to agriculture through pollination services was valued at up to $19 billion in Australia in 2017.

Pollinators need diverse habitat. There are a wide variety of plants for all garden sizes that attract and nourish bees, from eucalyptus trees to herbs and vegetables.

Right at home Why did you choose Brookhaven to build your first home?

We loved that Brookhaven offered bigger blocks as well as smaller blocks.

I’ve lived on acreage my whole life, so I like the nature aspect and that you can live so close to bushland without it feeling like suburbia. Brookhaven has a great community vibe.

When did you start your Instagram page dedicated to your home?

I started from the very moment that the land settled. It began as a platform to

communicate with other people who were also building their homes to share tips and tricks. Before I knew it, our home was complete, and I decided to keep the page going. Most of the followers live close by which is nice.

During your build, did you have a specific style in mind?

I kept a journal that I called my ‘Build Book’, which had things like our mood board of colours, the materials we wanted and also our budget. We would tick things off as we bought it and kept track of how much we spent. I’m very organised!

Do you have a particular interiors store that is your go to?

Our furniture is from everywhere. I pick bits and pieces from various stores and then put them together. I kept a lot of furniture in my wish list during the build so that when it went on sale I could buy it straight away.

Where did you find your inspiration?

I’ve always loved classic Hamptons style homes. I grew up in an old, heritage-listed Queenslander, so the weatherboards and

indoor panelling is something I’ve always loved. They have so much character.

I took that as inspiration and made it into something of my own.

What is your top styling tip to make your home look like a magazine?

Pick a theme as a start and stick to it.

We chose a Hamptons theme and blended it with some relaxed coastal pieces which worked really well.

What’s your favourite room in the house?

The master bedroom - it’s my sanctuary.

On the original plan we had a third living room, but then we decided to take it out and make a larger master bedroom with two walk-in robes. We also made the ensuite about three times the size it was.

It’s my own retreat in there!

What’s next for your home?

We are building a big stone fire pit near the deck (just in time for winter), and a pergola over the deck. We are also laying big custom pavers to the side of the home and building a fence to the front.

Moving to a new place can be nerve-racking, let alone leaving almost 40 years worth of memories and friendships behind. Living at Brookhaven means being part of a thriving community where relationships go beyond knowing the name of your neighbour.

Here, Janelle and David share their experiences of moving to Brookhaven and how they connected with their neighbours in making life-long friendships.

Tell us a bit about your move to Brookhaven?

What do you do with your newfound Brookhaven friend circle?

We’ve had two Christmases here, since May 2018. We moved from the Central Coast in New South Wales and left behind 37 years worth of friendships to move closer to our family.

We like to help each other out.

For example, transferring turf from one house to another. We helped Ennio with his landscaping and started helping other residents with their landscapes.

37 years is a long time! Did you know anyone other than family before you moved here?

We organise dinner once every three weeks at each others’ houses and everyone brings a platter to share.

We also organise outings together.

We visited Mount Tamborine markets recently and enjoyed dinner at Beenleigh Sports Club.

No one! It was important to us to recreate a friendship circle.

How did you meet new people?

We frequently visit Brookhaven Bean Cafe where we met Gloria and Ennio.

They introduced us to other residents around our age and we got along very quickly. We also attended Live Life Get Active on Tuesday and Friday religiously and met new residents there.

Events are also a great way to meet or catch-up with other residents.

Which events do you recommend?

We are thankful for the great community events Frasers Property are putting on.

Bee series was really interesting and an

David & Jenelle opportunity to learn about bees which is not something we would have learnt otherwise. Oktoberfest was a great one.

What are your top tips for meeting new people at Brookhaven?

Definitely visit the café and strike up a conversation with people while there.

There is a large communal table which is perfect for this. Participate in events and just introduce yourself to your neighbours, give a wave and say hello everyone is very friendly.
