By chance we drove past Brookhaven and were immediately attracted to the retention of the natural vegetation throughout the community.

How did you hear about the Brookhaven Collective?

The Brookhaven Collective is a group of passionate resident volunteers who work alongside the Community Development team to deliver a range of community events and initiatives. We sat down with the family to find out a little more about their recent involvement.

Tell us a bit about your family and your interests?

Nick and I are enjoying discovering parenthood with our 11-month-old twin boys, Theodore and Charlie. We love participating in fun family activities while exploring our local area and we’re planning our first trip as a family.

What attracted you to move to Brookhaven?

For years we have been travelling through this area on our way to the Gold Coast from Flagstone and witnessed the area transforming.

I reached out to Marion, the Community Manager, to discuss our past experience with Clean Up Australia Day, with an offer to host the event at Brookhaven. Marion shared some of the planning that had been done to date for that event with The Brookhaven Collective and invited us to attend the upcoming quarterly meeting to discuss the calendar of events for the first half of the year. It was very timely!

Tell us about your involvement with the Collective?

Nick and I attended the planning meeting in February, contributed past experiences and ideas for upcoming events and volunteered to lead the Brookhaven Clean-Up event and man a craft and reading corner at the Easter event. It was rewarding getting involved with these events and getting to know other members of The Collective.

Why is volunteering important to you?

Embracing the community spirit has always been important for both of us. It’s a great way to get to know other people and give back to our community. We are keen to participate in more local activations and get involved in events and community initiatives wherever we can.

Do you have any tips for residents interested to volunteer for the first time?

Don’t be shy! Come to one of the events or planning meetings to meet the team and see if anything sparks your interest, or bring your own idea, champion it and inspire others to support your initiative. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to see like-minded residents wanting to help.

What’s next for you and the Brookhaven Collective?

We can’t wait to bring back a second clean-up event as part of the gardening month in September and attract many more volunteers from around Brookhaven. Halloween is also already marked on our calendar. We were blown away by the engagement last year and can’t wait to be a part of it again. This is such a thrilling time to meet fellow neighbours!
