Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer was rescued from her office balcony during the official receiving ceremony for the municipality’s new Hydraulic Platform Fire Fighting and Rescue Vehicle.

The mayor joined in on a demonstration of the municipality’s latest addition to its fleet at the launch of the state of the art Hydraulic Platform Fire Fighting and Rescue Vehicle outside the Stellenbosch Town Hall on Friday, 26 July. It is one of only two hydraulic platform ladder vehicles in the Cape Winelands District and ours is now the most advanced and modern vehicle in the entire region.

In officially receiving the vehicle, Mayor van Y Deventer said that “This new vehicle will fulfil CM a crucial role in our firefighting capability. It is equipped with a hydraulic ladder and platform MY which will enable us to perform rescue and CY firefighting operations in high-rise buildings (10 CMY storeys and more) and hard to reach spaces. It is uniquely customised to our requirements, taking K into account the narrower streets in some of our neighbourhoods.”

The Municipality liaised with various stakeholders, including the University of Stellenbosch, the Cape Winelands District Municipality and the Provincial Government, to determine the exact specifications for the vehicle. “It is a significant investment in our community’s safety and I made every effort to secure the funding for this vehicle.

The provincial government contributed R3 million and the remaining R9.3 million was funded by the municipality. The total cost for this vehicle was R12.3 million,” the mayor continued.

After a tender process the world-renowned company, Rosenbauer, was awarded the tender to supply the vehicle. The Rosenbauer Group is one of the world’s top three manufacturers of fire-service vehicles and firefighting equipment. It supplies firefighting equipment to over 100 countries.

“This hydraulic platform fire vehicle is a massive investment in the safety of our communities and shows once again that this administration is serious about creating a safer valley for all our residents,” Mayor van Deventer concluded.

Kusasa Stars Return with 1.5 Tonnes of Gear

In other news relating to the R45 the Tatler has learned that in the wake of a petition asking for traffic safety improvements that was handed to the former Western Cape MEC for Public Works and Transport, Donald Grant, in May 2019 the provincial government has appointed consulting engineers “to investigate and implement periodic maintenance on the R45 from the R310 intersection to the Theewaterskloof boundary.” According to the Public Works and Transport Department, “A safety assessment is, as always, part of such an appointment. Safety enhancements, as proposed by this investigation, will be considered and implemented where practical and if affordable.”

A local cyclist, Barry Phillips, reported to the Tatler that on 3 August he came across three surveyors on the far side of the pass. Phillips says, “I was told that there is a plan or proposal to upgrade it by widening some of the bends so larger HGVs can negotiate them without crossing the double white line as they now do or did until the recent rockfall.”

following response from Lenn Fourie (Deputy Director-General: Road Network Management): “The surveyors you refer to were doing measurements on behalf of the consulting engineering firm. As stated before, the consultants have to investigate and implement periodic maintenance and assess safety issues on the road.

“As the investigations are not finished, there are no recommendations on the table to consider as yet.

“However, should road widening at places be recommended, it follows logically that the Department will have to consider it.

“If any of the accepted recommendations trigger a formal environmental approval process, the Department will follow due process (with regard to public participation)”.

Smoke Alarm Project Stellenbosch Municipality’s Fire Safety Section has been rolling out a smoke alarm installation project over the past few months.

Stellenbosch Municipality is by far the leading local authority in the Western Cape when it comes to the installation of smoke alarms. More than 2000 smoke alarms have been installed to date. A dedicated team of three Extended Public Works Programme workers, under the supervision of Mr Bertie Brandsen, are driving this successful initiative. The same team is also responsible for hydrant maintenance.

During the third quarter, they installed smoke alarms in the La Motte Bosbou area of ward 2.

Cllr Petersen says she places a high premium on safety in her community and that is why she ring-fenced R60 000 of her ward allocation for this purpose. A total of 260 smoke alarms were installed at predetermined addresses.

The young footballers of the Kusasa Stars, returned from the Gothia Cup 2019 in Gothenburg, Sweden, on 22 July. They not only brought back wonderful memories and life lessons but also 1.5 tonnes of football gear and clothing!

They were welcomed home with a festive procession down the main road and a slap-up meal at Sacred Ground.

The Gothia Cup, also known as the World Youth Cup, takes place in Sweden annually. It is the largest football tournament in the world with over 1500 teams from 83 countries participating. This year two teams from the Kusasa Stars, boys aged between 11 and 13, travelled to Gothenburg.

A highlight of their trip was when they carried the South African flag at the opening ceremony in the Ullevi Stadium in front of 50 000 other participants and guests.

They were there to play soccer though and had plenty of opportunities to do so. The U12 team played teams from Sweden, Norway, Jordan, and Indonesia. By the end of the week, they had won two games, drew one and lost two. The U13 side fared even better; coming away with three wins, one draw and one loss against teams from Sweden, Norway, USA and England.

After the rockfall that closed the Franschhoek Pass on 22 June and another barely a week later, there has been much discussion in the village as to when the pass might re-open. While many businesses were negatively affected by the closure, some residents made no secret that they enjoyed the peace and quiet caused by the absence of heavy goods vehicles and motorcycles.

In a statement, Jandré Bakker (Head of Communication: Department of Transport and Public Works) said that “Following a geotechnical investigation into the extent and nature of the damage, contractors have been appointed to do rock barring and other necessary remedial work. If all goes according to plan and weather permitting, these remedial works will be completed by the end of September 2019.”

The aforementioned rock barring commenced in August and engineers have asked cyclists to please not use the pass as dangerous rock slides are expected while this work is underway.

“The safety of our community and of our officers is paramount and therefore we will make sure that every officer is properly trained and equipped to protect and serve our residents,” the mayor concluded.

Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer pointed out “It is important to note that all our law enforcement officers will and must undergo training to exercise these powers. In terms of the applicable training, the Legal Division of SAPS has provided the law enforcement officers with the minimum training required after the declaration last year. The officers who received training were re-issued with competency certificates and re-appointed as peace officers.”

The municipality is in the process of arranging followup training with an accredited training academy which will take place later this year. This will serve to enhance the training already provided by SAPS. “Our officers will,” the mayor continued, “in certain circumstances, be able to make arrests for certain transgressions/offences. As with any arrest, the accused will be handed over to the nearest police station. We will continue our excellent working relationship with SAPS and we will continue to form part of joint operations with SAPS in targeting hotspot areas.”

The promulgated declaration gives additional powers to law enforcement officers appointed by a municipality with regard to inter alia the following: • Any by-law or regulation made by or for such a municipality.

• Any offence contemplated in section 5 of the Business Act, 1991, (Act No. 71 of 1991) or regulations made thereunder.

Cauliflower, Hazelnut Milk, Curry Oil, Raisin And Parsley

Tuna tataki, yuzu, pickled mustard, avocado, radish, lime mayo, toasted sesame seeds Clean and sear tuna roll in cling wrap refrigerate.

Pickled mustard 1cup mustard seeds 1 cup white wine vinegar 2 cloves garlic 1 cup water Sugar to taste Blanch the mustard seeds 3 times in cold water repeat the process.

Add all the ingredients to a medium size pot and simmer until mustard seeds is soft and cooked.

Seasoning 100g white sesame 100g black sesame Toast lightly and set aside.

Cut nori sheets into desired size for garnish.

Yuzu dressing 1 bottle Ponzu 1 bottle yuzu juice 500ml soya sauce 250ml rice wine vinegar Combine all the ingredients and set aside.

Slice the tuna on a meat slicer into the desired thickness and assemble the dish and garnish with nori sheet and salmon roe.

Lime mayo Basic mayo Juice of ½ lime

Cauliflower Puree -2 cauliflower heads; 1 potato; 1l cream; 1l milk; 50 g butter, seasoning Chop cauliflower and potato, place in saucepan.

Cover with milk and cream. Boil and simmer for 15 to 20 min. Strain,and allow mix to steam for 10 min.

Blend with butter till velvety. Season.

Fermented Cauliflower - ½ head of cauliflower; salt; cornflour Cut the cauliflower into florets. Weigh and calculate 2% salt to weight. Place in jar, seal and ferment for 4 days till slightly sour. Dust in flour and deep-fry till crispy.

Roasted Cauliflower - ½ head of cauliflower; 50 g butter; squeeze lemon juice; seasoning Cut cauliflower into florets and remove stems. Sauté in butter and season with seasoning and lemon juice.

Raisin Dressing - 50g raisins; 50g Madeira or sherry; 50g verjus; 50g sherry vinegar; 200 g olive oil; 1 onion; 10 g parsley; seasoning Soak raisins in wine, vinegar and verjus overnight.

Place into saucepan and reduce by half. Cool. Chop onion finely and add. Season. Chop parsley and

mix in to finish the dressing.

Toasties - 1 stale sourdough bread; olive oil; seasoning Cut bread thinly, season with salt and drizzle with olive oil. Bake at 160 ˚C for 12 min until crispy and browned.

Marsala Oil - 250 g good marsala spice; 205g canola oil Warm oil to 90 ˚C and blend ingredients. Rest overnight. Strain off the oil.

Hazelnut Milk - 500 g blanched hazelnuts; 1 l filtered water; seasoning; 1 g xanthan gum Process nuts and water till creamy. Place in muslin cloth, refrigerate and allow the milk to drip off overnight. Squeeze juice out of pulp, season and blend xanthan gum to adjust viscosity.

To Assemble Warm cauliflower puree and place 3 to 4 spoonfuls into a warmed bowl. Mix roasted and crispy, fermented cauliflower and raisin dressing. Scatter a few spoonfuls over the puree. Top with a few toasties. Serve hazelnut milk with a little marsala oil on the side.

The wine has its origin in a project conceived by two of France’s leading winemakers, Michel Rolland and Michel Chapoutier, who wanted to blend Merlot and Syrah. Holden Manz Cellarmaster Thierry Haberer was heavily involved in that project and had dreams of repeating the project himself.

The Bohoek’s unique terroir allows Merlot and Syrah to achieve ripeness at the same time on rare occasions. This happened in 2015 and Thierry decided to co-ferment the two varietals in new 225 litre French oak barrels using natural fermentation.

Holden Manz is justifiably proud of the resulting wine. “Multiple layers of complexity, brooding dark fruits, an earthiness combined with an element of spice and true class combine to make this one of

the finest red wines made in Franschhoek for many years,” they say.

Priced at R1500 per bottle this wine is not for the faint hearted but those lucky ones who manage to secure a bottle or two are sure to be rewarded with “one of the most unusual and exceptional wines they will ever experience.” You’ll need to hurry though… only 800 bottles were made and half of them were sold out even before the official launch in August 2019! winery@holdenmanz.com | 021 876 2738

The Oxford Companion to Wine claims that “Madeira is probably the most robust wine in the world”. Such speculations are outside my qualifications but from the little that I know it is certainly a wine with a fierce reputation. It’s a pity that we don’t get it here as it would find many friends in our winter season.

Named for its island home in the mid-Atlantic, Madeira has been popular for a long time. In fact, it was drunk to ratify the American Declaration of Independence in 1776. If you want another testimonial look no further than Napoleon who also admired our Vin de Constance so much while relaxing on the island of St Helena.

Madeira is a full-bodied red. Traditionally it is a

blend of Tinta Negra Mole and Complexa grapes, though in recent years other varieties have led to an improvement in quality.

So, what is it like to drink? Happily, I can tell you as I was immensely privileged to have some at a 70th birthday bash a few years ago in Paarl. The host was of Portuguese parentage from the island of Madeira itself. He had somehow managed to get hold of a bottle. This proved to be the oldest wine to pass my lips and I have no reason to disbelieve the label that gave the vintage as 1903!

It was delicious. Well rounded after all that time and a treat to the palate.

The bad news, of course, was that being a party it was shared out lovingly amongst the guests so I only had a substantial sip. The good news was that the bottle was then placed on a table within my easy reach. I gave thanks to those who had stuck to Klippies and Coke, or whatever, as the bottle was not quite empty. I remedied the situation with crossed fingers in the knowledge that ‘once

open it wouldn’t keep’ and allowed myself a second sip of a wine that can age indefinitely.

Madeira is an ideal wine to introduce to the young as it has no harsh tannins making it instantly acceptable. Who remembers Flanders and Swan and their epic tale of seduction?

“She was young, she was pure, she was new, she was nice She was fair, she was sweet seventeen, He was old, he was vile, and no stranger to vice He was base, he was bad, he was mean.”

After a few more rollicking verses they conclude: “Until the next morning, she woke up in bed With a smile on her lips and an ache in her head And a beard in her ear ‘ole that tickled and said “Have some Madeira m’dear” While Madeira fits the bill, we have a number of wines that could be regarded as sharing the Madeira experience, though not necessarily the experience above. In winter with snow on our mountains, I really enjoy a glass of something that can be likened to

The culmination of this dedication is being realised in the maiden release of The Haute Collection. Comprising of three wines from the 2017 vintage, the range is site-driven and represents the very best in no-holds-barred winemaking. The wines are packaged elegantly with clean, minimalist labels depicting the Haute Collection logo, a creative representation of the crown and the horns of the von Arnim family crest. point.

The 2017 Collection includes a barrel-fermented Chardonnay with a component fermented in amphorae, a Pinot Noir and a 100 per cent amphora Chardonnay.

“With this range, I truly want to express terroir,” explains second-generation Cellar Master Takuan von Arnim. “It also allows us to be experimental in the vinification.”

These vineyard-focused wines actually began with an accidental discovery. Winemaker Tim Hoek identified some Chardonnay bunches that had a deep concentration of flavour and colour and the pair decided to barrel-ferment a portion of the 2016 harvest as an experiment. Both Takuan and Tim were very pleased, resulting in the decision to use the entire block for a singlevineyard wine circa 2017.

It was after this series of events that The Haute Collection came to life as a space for experimentation in the estate’s portfolio. An ongoing project, each year the Haute Collection may change depending on a variety of factors; from identifying special vineyard sites to innovative winemaking and maturation techniques.

The Haute Collection has been designed to be enjoyed with food, and ties into the von Arnim

family’s love for the art of food and wine pairing.

“The Haute Collection wines are perfect to enjoy in restaurants or around the dining table, including our restaurant at the estate, of course.

Though, enjoy them however you want. Our wines don’t put you in a corner, they set you free,” concludes von Arnim.

The wines retail at R249 for the whites and R289 for the Pinot Noir; available from the online shop and selected fine wine retailers.

a warm hug at the fireplace. Something like a red Muscadel or Hanepoot (fortified).

As local is lekker one can look out for these at Alvi’s Drift, Allesverloren and Stellenbosch Hills as local (well, reasonably local) suppliers of note. A favourite of mine is My Wyn’s “My Robyn” a Cape Vintage Port style made from Shiraz. Just over 30 months barrel maturation gives it a really rich texture with a satisfying, lingering aftertaste.

To me, these are ‘treat’ wines and just the thing to round off a winter evening before putting the cat out. In summer try keeping them in the fridge for a cooling nightcap. Interesting to note that Australia’s favourite contender, made by a number of producers including Brown Brothers and Rosewood, is made from the Muscat de Frontignan grape, as is our own Vin de Constance mentioned earlier. Either way, it sits among the realms of Port and Cognac and should be treated accordingly.

Babalo’s here!

Last year the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy sent two of their students to Austria to further their studies at the ITM (International Tourism Management) College in Bad Vöslau.

After a selection process, Babalo Phitshana and Jodine Korkee were chosen, to their delight, to go overseas. They have now completed their first year and the Tatler met up with Babalo when he came home for a holiday. We hope to chat to Jodine when she touches down later.

Babalo says he is “a bit more mature and a bit wiser” than when he left. He admits that he was a bit naughty at school (Franschhoek High) which was probably due to his seeking attention, and was not quite sure what he would do after school.

Considering that Reuben Riffel is his hero and an ambassador for the Hospitality Academy, it seemed a good place to apply, so he did after convincing his father that he should. He was pleasantly surprised when he was accepted. He gradually overcame the problematic issues of childhood and grew into a confident and hard-working young man. His family

had moved here when he was in Grade 1, speaking only Xhosa and unable to speak either English or Afrikaans. He is now fluent in both and is studying German and Spanish in Austria. Living in Austria and travelling in Europe has been an eye-opener for him.

He says, “I liked discovering how big the world is.”

The time at ITM is wonderful. Lectures on hospitality management take up a lot of time but the students are scheduled to work at the college’s hotel for ten hours a week. They get paid for this work which makes it possible to go travelling in their free time. Students come from all

over the world and friendships are forged across nationalities. Babalo is excited about this life of new places, things and people that has provided him with wide horizons and a desire to know more -- and to learn to ski.

Babalo cannot imagine what his life would have been, had he not studied at the Hospitality Academy. Asked about his goals, he says without hesitation that he is going to be a chef; one day soon that is. When he has completed his studies he is aiming to work in Europe for a number of years; it’s the short term goal and his family approves. His long term goal is to come back to South Africa and open his own restaurant. He is appreciative of getting the support he needed from sponsors and the academy and would like to somehow return the favour. His parting words? He is really, really, really happy.

The Shop around the Corner

On 6 August 2019, the students of the Franschhoek Hospitality Academy & Learning Centre (FHALC) gathered in the gallery of Café Roca to receive their first Baking Master Class from Chef Margo Uys. The lesson was comprised of baking, assembling, icing and decorating a cake.

Not only was Margo’s class fun, informative and exciting, but there was also a competition involved where the team who baked the best cake won a dinner at Roca! The competition judges were Craig Sherrell (Owner of Café Roca and Roca Restaurant), Morné Williams and Chef Shawn (Roca Restaurant).

There were so many impressive cakes that the judges decided to award cocktail vouchers to the other teams.

Lisa Williams, Groendal Primary’s Top Achiever, was also invited. She was also part of the winning team which included FHALC’s Siphokhazi, Mangwane, Bongani Sikondo, Janine Richter and Stuard Beneke.

This Franschhoek collaboration is one which the Academy will always remember. The Academy would like to thank Margo, Craig, the judges and the rest of the Café Roca Team for their support. The Academy would also like to extend congratulations to the winning team and to all the students who participated. It was a great day, enjoyed by all.

from the Karoo.

The sewing crowd have not been forgotten either with needles and pins, ribbons, buttons and lots of colourful thread.

Gardening in September NATIE FERREIRA

It is springtime! Technically we must wait until 23 September for the spring equinox (at 09h30 to be exact) before the official start of the new season, but for us in the Western Cape 1 September is Spring Day! Following close to average rainfall for the past winter we can look forward to an exciting gardening season. Our dams are almost full, with even the bigger dams filling up fast. Water restrictions are here to stay, but it will be interesting to see if these will be more relaxed this summer.

This is the month gardeners have been waiting for. Now is the time to start planting for your Christmas garden. All summer flowering annuals and bulbs can be planted or sown now – start early to allow yourself time to stagger plantings and ensure an extended display. This year I am all for diversity. Mass plantings of the same colour are effective in large gardens and shopping centres, but I am now more into the tapestry look of a mixed planting consisting of small groupings of assorted indigenous annuals, old European favourites and mixed perennial groundcovers. If done now you still have time to split and extend plantings of Gazania, Arctotis, Osteospermum and vygies. Make sure you replant only rooted pieces into well-composted soil and water well. Most of your winter pruning should be done by now. Trim shrubs to shape only and remove the damage done by August winds. Leave spring-flowering shrubs like Azalea and Camelia alone, they will flower soon. To prevent the buds of Camelia from falling off fertilise the plants with a high potash fertiliser – ash from the fireplace is good, but slow releasing. Those of us still looking after lawns have plenty to do. September is the month for scarification, top dressing and feeding.

If you don’t want to go through the effort of full scarification a similar renewal of old thatched lawns can be achieved by setting your lawnmower really low. It might cost you a set or two of blades though. Start with your feeding programme, especially for your roses and summer flowering shrubs and perennials. A shot-gun approach with good chicken manure-based organic fertiliser does wonders for the entire garden. Roses might need some more nitrogen though – there are very good enriched fertilisers specifically formulated for roses

that can be used for this.

The vegetable garden is however where most of the action will happen this month. Just checking the back of the seed packets or reading a sowing guide will show that almost all vegetable seeds can be sown this month – even the brassicas for a midsummer crop if your area is not too hot. I have been diligent this year in sowing cover crops on all bare beds. The mixed planting of lupins, cowpeas and triticale will now be cut and left to wilt on the beds for a few days before digging in. Do this early for maximum nitrogen capture. I, however, cannot get myself to cut them down before flowering though and rather sacrifice some benefit for the Instagram display the pea and lupin flowers will give me towards the middle of the month. You should really wait 2 to 3 weeks before planting after the cover crop has been dug in, but time is a luxury this time of year and I often plant straight into the newly dug soils. You can also clear narrow rows in the cover crop for sowings of slow-growing crops like carrots, beetroot and celery. Your fruit trees will require care – top up the mulch around them and feed with high nitrogen fertiliser like chicken manure.

Watch out for early signs of pest attack. Your fruit fly program should start early – Google will help you find a method to suit your budget and philosophy. I hate preventative spraying, but weather conditions might necessitate a copper and sulphur spray against fungal attack.

Despite all the excitement about the new season, September is a month of famine in the gardento-table kitchen. If you planned well, you will have some early peas and broad beans. You might be tired of eating cabbage and all last season’s pumpkins will be gone by now. Another major delight of spring is fresh asparagus. If you are lucky enough to have these in your garden, you will now be spoiled with a culinary delight of note. Tie them in a bunch and steam upright in a pot – this way the thinner tops won’t go soggy.

What to Plant for Christmas Affectionately known as Christmas flowers, Hydrangeas (H. macrophylla) are a firm favourite amongst South Africans and flourish in gardens across the country. While traditionally these flowers were available in shades of blue and white, they are now available in a variety of colours. The bright red Hydrangeas will add great festive colour to the garden when placed in alkaline soil, speak to your GCA to find out which plant feed would be best to use for these Hydrangeas. Place your hydrangeas in areas with good light but out of direct sunlight and water once a week, though once the weather starts warming up these thirsty plants will need to be watered daily in hot weather conditions.

Nothing says Christmas like the Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima). These bright red leafy plants will add festive cheer to the garden, whether big or small. These sun-loving plants are best planted in full sun but will grow in part shade too.

Plant in well-drained, compost-enriched soil. To ensure you do not overwater the plants, check the soil is moist and only water when dry to the touch.

The plants will require more frequent watering in the summer months, particularly if placed in direct sunlight. The Poinsettia will need to be fertilised weekly from mid-spring to the end of summer.

Ask your GCA which fertiliser will be the best to maximise growth for Christmas.

Don’t forget about the indoors, plant Poinsettias in sunny areas around the house to add some festivity and pops of bright colour to the house. The pots can be decorated and used as Christmas table centrepieces or could be used as Christmas gifts for friends and family to enjoy some Christmas foliage in their own homes.

Another plant that can be planted indoors or outdoors is the Amaryllis (Hippeastrum). These showy trumpet-shaped blooms are available in a variety of colours to add bursts of flamboyant colour to the garden and home. They are easy to grow and require little more than to be planted in welldrained soil in a sunny area and water only when the soil is dry to the touch. Plant your Amaryllis bulb now, and you’ll start to enjoy the flowers from October. If planting them in pots, be sure to use heavy clay pots as these plants can be top-heavy and fall over if placed in light-weight plastic pots.

The Tooth Fairy is Real!

On Monday, 19 August, the Tooth Fairy paid an important visit to the Country Kids Play School. What the kids don’t know is that in real life she is Barbara Kaschula, the dental hygienist at Dr Schalk du Plessis’s dental practice.

The children all gathered to listen and talk to the Tooth Fairy who was dressed in pink and had wings and a tiara. She asked them how many teeth they had and everyone responded enthusiastically with varying numbers until a volunteer came to lie on her lap and opened his mouth so the Tooth Fairy could count. The children helped her count ten on the bottom and ten more on top.

The important message from the Tooth Fairy was that they should brush their teeth twice a day and when they do eat sweets, they should eat them in one go and not one at a time all day long. It is important not to have sugar lingering in one’s mouth for hours on end. She also encouraged them to eat fruit and dairy products.

Then she pointed out that the dentist would be

very lonely if they never visited him and playfully explained how he examined their teeth with a tiny mirror.

An important message Barbara has for parents is that children up to the age of seven need adult help with brushing their teeth; a child’s dexterity develops only after the age of seven. Sometimes a parent has to redo brushing, sometimes simply assisting is enough.

As you know, the Tooth Fairy does not come empty-handed. Just before she left to see the other little children in Franschhoek she handed out gifts of toothbrushes and toothpaste. She is definitely real.

Shootout – The New Superbakkies Raptor vs Arctic vs GR Sport Ford makes no bones that its new Ranger Raptor rewrites the performance off-road bakkie rulebook.

But hang on a second, why are Isuzu and Toyota shouting the odds? Are the Arctic AT35 and Gazoo Sport Hilux really Raptor rivals?

Let’s square them up and take a look see.

The Ford looks as if it’s just escaped the Dakar paddock — aggressive Raptor DNA blends race bakkie looks with supercool contemporary street cred. Billed as a collector’s bakkie for avid off-roaders, Isuzu’s oldschool-cool Artic is impressive to behold, while the Toyota Hilux GR Sports looks like it just raced through a Lions rugby washing line…

Inside, superRanger gets cool racy seats for optimum support, blue stitching, leather accents and Raptor dials behind a special leather steering. The Isuzu keeps the standard interior, but Toyota makes an effort make GR Sport’s cabin pop with red-accented black leather interior trim, but Raptor claims an early advantage — it is more inside and out…

So, can either pretender hold a candle to the Ford as an all-round off-road driving weapon? Well, not in a million years.

It starts with Ford’s all-new downsized SA-built 157kW 500Nm 8.3 l/100km 220 g/km 2-litre bi-turbodiesel turning a 10-speed autobox that makes a mockery of Isuzu’s 130kW 450Nm 8.6 l/100km 227 g/km 3-litre and Hilux’s good old 130kW 450Nm 8.5 l/100km and 224 g/km 2.8-litre turbodiesel, both mated to equally venerable 6-speed automatics. You need not be a rocket scientist to figure the hiding the Ford gives its rivals in both engine and drive.

But consider their respective chassi and it becomes apparent that this is indeed a one-horse race. Ford left no stone unturned in developing this sublime superbakkie. Raptor’s real advantages start with its highstrength ladder frame re-fettled to adopt dramatic suspension improvements, for significantly enhanced wheel travel to meet far tougher driving expectations.

Add improved underbody protection, a wild Baja drive mode and bigger brakes, specifically-developed aluminium control arms and a bespoke coil-over Watt’s linkage rear end. Only then then do we get to Raptor’s Fox race bakkie-like 64mm diameter Position Sensitive shock absorbers to deliver 32% more front and 22% improved rear wheel travel and specifically developed tyres for extreme off-road capability and impressive tar road-holding.

The Isuzu carries an intriguing technical pedigree, but that’s mostly aesthetic, with technical enhancements limited to a set of Fox dampers and 17-inch AT alloy wheels in 35-inch BF Goodrich All-Terrain Tyres nestling in those chunky wheel arches. Hilux GR likewise benefits from uprated Fox suspension with revised damping and special BF Goodrich tyres for a sportier ride without sacrificing comfort, but the Toyota keeps its rear leaf spring rates and stock payload and towing spec.

There are compromises in all three bakkies — Raptor and Arctic drop a ton in towing capacity to now ‘only’ pull up to 2500kg trailers, while the Isuzu’s and Ford’s load capacities drop a hundred kilos or so, but all three bakkies maintain their back-up and deep levels of executive spec.

At R803K, Raptor is an ultimate performance vehicle bargain, while the Isuzu runs the Ford close in price and the Toyota comes in at a hundred grand discount.

However, besides the Isuzu’s really cool body kit, trick dampers and neat wheel and tyre and the Hilux’s gentler suspension tweaks, garish colour scheme, cabin trim, wheels and tyres, not much else changes. Now compare both the D-Max and Hilux’s drivetrain to the Raptor’s far superior engine and transmission to start with, never mind a far superior and deeper chassis upgrade and we start to wonder — especially at the Isuzu’s price?

The Toyota too lacks much of what makes the Ford really special, but at that price, it does not pretend to rival it in the first place, making GR Sport a worthy consideration at its price and in its own right.

All this leads us to conclude that whatever its rivals try to tell you, the Ford Ranger Raptor comprehensively pees on their batteries. This Ford’s completely overhauled chassis, upgraded mechanical suspension and performance brakes, never mind a sizeable engine and gearbox advantage to start with, set it head and shoulders above any other performance bakkie available on the local market right now.

There is only one super bakkie out there. It’s called Raptor. The rest are just carrion.

Drama for Giordano!

It’s been a tough couple of meetings for Franschhoek flyer Giordano Lupini in his WP Burly Pro GTi Challenge championship campaign since the Tatler’s last report two months back. Class C racer Lupini may have set new lap records en route to three hard-fought wins out of four, and nine wins in 11 races so far this season, but the second race in August had other plans for the young B Com freshman and entrepreneur.

“The previous meeting was great, I won both races but lost the second victory to a yellow flag penalty and August’s first race was once again a perfect ten,” Giordano explained. “I took full points for pole position, fastest lap of the day with a new lap record and the race win, but the second heat once again turned my season on its head!

“There was a little argy-bargy and contact in Turn 5 on lap 2 and then I felt something odd through Turn 4 on the following lap. “So when I got to Turn 5, my foot went to the floor…

“I had no brakes and I was a passenger at 180km/h!

“I just closed my eyes and assumed the brace position — when it was all over, I was sitting upsidedown on top of the tyre wall and scrambled out of the boot with the assistance of the WPMC marshals.

“The car is pretty bent — that contact the lap before damaged the left front hub, which let go and when that happens, you are a passenger — you simply have no brakes and the rest is history. “Special thanks to the Killarney marshals, the medics and everyone else who has contacted us, but I am 100% fine and ready to get back in and fight for the title.

“Now the challenge is to be ready for the next race at Killarney on 7 September — carSave at acciDent Guru in Paarden Island will have sorted the car in time to be out and testing in the week before. “I am still jointly leading the overall title chase and our class lead is pretty solid, so it’s all to do — bring it on!”

FRANSCHHOEK MOTOR MUSEUM WEBSITE UPDATED FMM's website, www.fmm.co.za, has just been updated with the accent on making the museum's world-class collection the hero of the site. The new layout showcases some of motoring photographer Peet Mocke's amazing images of the cars and motorcycles. Fresh additions to the portfolio have been incorporated along with a new interface aimed at simplifying the user experience. New interactive elements engage the user, including engine start-up clips, fast facts and videos.

MUSEUM INTERACTION FMM's staff recently undertook an educational visit some of Cape Town museums, the aim being to see, understand and compare the challenges their face and how they set about overcoming them. The staff was divided into two groups with both visiting the South African Naval Museum in Simon's Town. The museum has on display a very interesting collect of heavy armaments, photos and memorabilia, and has just opened a new display on the modern SA Navy. It was a very informative visit with topics including conservation, maintenance and education being explained.

One group also visited the Stellenbosch Village Museum, which comprises four houses dating between 1709 and 1849, all of them restored and decorated with period furniture.

Tour guides dress in period attire and replicate some of the daily tasks of the time while presenting the tour. The other group's second destination was the Rupert Art Museum, which exposed FMM staff to South Africa's master artists. Again, the focus of attention was on the

preservation and display techniques used in an art museum.

The visits were an education for all involved, in particular how the different tour guides interpret and communicate the background of their respective displays. Although the museums were different in content, everyone learned a little from each other on the best techniques to help the public enjoy their visit.

FMM SLOT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP The popular FMM Slot Car Club has been going for two years and in September is upgrading to a new, longer, four-lane track. So, after seven rounds, the 2019 Championship, which has been run on the original two-lane track, has drawn to close.

At the July meeting, Jon Lederle (Audi RS5 DTM) just managed to beat his arch rival Mark Venske (BMW M4 DTM) in the Formula Carrera championship. Donny Tarentaal (Audi RS5 DTM) returned to form by finishing third. In the Formula FMM category for non-magnetic cars, Jon (Porsche 911 GT3) was again the victor, setting equal fastest lap time of the event with second-placed Jackie van Wyk (Alfa Romeo Tipo 33), with Christiaan Loedolff (Porsche 936) third.

In August, the competitiveness continued unabated and in the Formula Carrera event, Jon consolidated his season's performance with another victory over his adversary Mark. Thys Roux (Mercedes GT3 AMG) finished third. In Formula FMM, yes, it was that man Jon again with his Porsche from perpetual pursuer Jackie's Alfa, with Franklin Smit (Porsche 918) third.

The final log positions show Jon as the champion in Formula Carrera with 96 points, from Mark on 93 and Mike Monk (Ford Zakspeed Capri) on 76. In the six-round Formula FMM, Jackie was the champion with 58 points from Andre Loedolff (Porsche 956) on 43 and Jon on 33. The four-round Formula Libre title went to Franklin with 27 points from Thys on 14.

The Big Five

In 2015, five ECD principals embarked on ‘Six Bricks’ training presented by the LEGO Foundation. Soon to be named the ‘Big Five’ of Franschhoek’s educators, these women were determined to share their valuable knowledge and skills with the rest of Franschhoek’s ECD educators. Four years later, this simple yet significant educational tool is improving the quality of early education in the valley.

Six Bricks is a transformational classroom aid introduced by the LEGO foundation that opens up a fun, creative and low cost tool for ECD centres to incorporate brain-training into their daily programmes. With only six colourful rectangular bricks, children are encouraged to come up with creative ways of assembling and creating structures.

It empowers educators to make their activities not only fun and creative, but also extremely beneficial for brain development and skills.

After their training Ingrid Lapperts, Zukiswa Belo, Hellene Fischer, Rachel Pearce and Cinoria Silwanyana were so intrigued and excited by the power of six simple bricks that they took it into their own hands to make the most of the opportunity they were given. Through hosting their own Six Bricks training courses and sharing their resources through the ECD Forum, the quality of education for children in these centres

Fire Side Talk ASHLEY BAUER September brings the fire season closer and preparation is well underway. The Franschhoek fire team has recently undergone training facilitated by the Winelands Fire Protection Association and our command structure has been bolstered by the addition of four task force/strike team leaders and a divisional supervisor which will greatly assist in coordination, safety and response to fire incidents. The dedication of these volunteers is greatly appreciated.

The addition of the much-needed dedicated fire channel on the Landbou radio network will improve communications among our volunteers and the fire services.

The Lions Club has recently signed an MOU with the Stellenbosch Municipality Disaster Management Department and in accordance with the Incident Command System will provide all logistical food support if required. The Food

was elevated enormously. Some centres, such as Fischer’s ‘Little Rainbows’, designate a whole day only to LEGO-based activities.

The Big Five are excited to grow the role of LEGO in early childhood development. Bhabhathane will be hosting more training in the future to connect the remaining ECD centres, currently without Six Bricks training and LEGO sets, to these resources. The Big Five’s inspiring initiative has helped improve the quality of early education and provided valuable opportunities for many children in Franschhoek.

“Never keep something positive or good to yourself while it could enrich others. Let us try to share with others even in small ways.” These words of Hellene Fischer capture the selfless attitude of the Big Five and many local changemakers in Franschhoek. Bhabhathane would like to thank the Big Five for the difference they are making in the lives of so many children and educators alike.

Bydraes word tans meestal deur die spelers, afrigters, spanbestuurders, toeskouers en bestuurslede gemaak.

Wire snares – a threat hidden in the undergrowth The Franschhoek Conservancy was recently informed of a significant threat to wildlife in our area. The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) has identified illegal hunting with wire snares as an emergent threat to biodiversity in the Boland Mountain Complex (BMC). They are now working towards curbing this activity through a combination of active snare removal patrols as well as awareness raising and education. The Conservancy supports this effort and encourages Franschhoek landowners to be on alert for any snaring activity on their properties and to work with the Conservancy and CLT to rid the landscape of these inhumane traps.

The CLT’s Snare Patrol Project follows on from research collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch which investigated several humanrelated threats to leopard and their prey species, particularly hunting with illegal snares and the factors driving this behaviour.

The leopard is the last big predator to still roam free in the Western Cape. It plays a vital role as apex predator and umbrella species for broader biodiversity conservation. Leopards are highly threatened and have been classified as Vulnerable

The Annual Bastille Day Boule Championship took place on Saturday, 13 July, at Hey Joe Brewery.

Twenty-eight teams of three players each played a series of games throughout a beautiful winter’s day.

The SPCA Championship was won by “Madaboule”

by the IUCN. Globally, leopards have lost 75% of their historical distribution range. Only 20% of South Africa’s area is considered suitable leopard habitat, of which over 60% is private land. Human behaviour and activities, especially along the borders of protected areas, can have a profound effect on leopard numbers and population structure.

The CLT found that within the BMC, a wide range of animal species are affected by illegal wire snare poaching on private property. Small antelope and Cape porcupine are highly sought-after species with high off-take rates. They also form the primary prey base of leopard in the area. Preybase depletion is therefore one of the major global threats to leopards.

To address this issue, the CLT has appointed a dedicated Snare Patrol Officer who is conducting snare detection, removal and data collection patrols on private property adjacent to Protected Areas in the BMC. They are running education and outreach activities through community engagement.

Since the launch of the project in June 2019, the CLT has conducted patrols on 39 properties, covering a foot patrol distance of 212.5km and removing a total of 89 snares from 17 properties.

Dear Readers Some things we simply take for granted. They’re just a part of our day-to-day existence and unless something spectacular happens (usually bad) we never even think of them. Living in the Western Cape these include things like good roads, operational sewage plants, clean water and lights when one presses the switch. It takes a visit to lessfortunate parts of the country to remind us that these are things to be grateful for.

Something else that until recently I took for granted are postal codes. I mean who cares where a postal code comes from as long as the mail reaches you? Besides, in the email age are postal codes not losing their relevance? It turns out that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Postal codes were created to assist in the automated sorting and delivery of mail. South African postal codes are linked to a place name, sorting centre and province. They don’t fully align with administrative

boundaries though. Most of Mpumalanga’s mail, for example, gets sorted in Pretoria.

Creating postal codes is something that can be done in many ways, depending on local systems and circumstances. There is arguably no single right way of doing it.

In the US a ZIP Code is the postal code used by the United States Postal Service. (ZIP stands for ‘Zoning Improvement Plan.)’ The basic code consists of five numerical digits of which the first represents a group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region (or city) in that group and the final two digits representing more specific areas, e.g. small towns or suburbs.

UK postal codes intrigue me. They are much more specific than our codes and can represent anything from a street down to a single premise.

Being used to South African codes that represent relatively large areas I find it difficult to grasp that even an individual premise can have its own postal code! Nevertheless, there is logic to the UK’s system. Unlike ours, the UK’s postal codes are hierarchical and alphanumeric. “The format of UK Postal codes is generally: LD DLL or LLD DLL or LDD DLL or LLDD DLL or LLDL DLL or LDL DLL, where L signifies a letter and D a digit. … (W)orking from left to right – the first letter or pair of letters represents

the area, the following digit or digits represent the district within that area, and so on.”

I like things to be strictly ordered, so I’m quite partial to postal code system of places like China, Morocco and India where postal codes neatly follow the administrative regions of the country.

All right, so why am I going on about postal codes? Well, a change could be in the offing.

When everybody was still sending letters and parcels via various national postal systems, postal codes did what they were intended to do in each country. Nowadays however we send emails for which postal codes are irrelevant and our online shopping is generally delivered by courier companies who don’t use the national postal system and therefore don’t care much for postal codes either. They need a physical location – at times though even that can be of limited use.

How easily is a courier going to find me if I live at Frog Pond Cottage, La Trine Farm, Franschhoek?

A company that believes they have the answer is called ‘What3words’. They have created a 3m by 3m grid that covers the entire world and where each square in the grid is referenced by a unique combination of three words. Immediate advantages of this system are that it works in the same way all over the world and it is much more specific than postal

codes. If I wanted to I could specify the location of my desk, or my front door, or the garage door and a courier would easily be able to find me.

Here’s an example: The What3Words address for one of the squares in the park near where I live is lard.beckons.pioneer and the front door of the Franschhoek Town Hall is at pities. reporters.goddesses.

Quite often these random three-word combinations can be quite amusing. For example, hawking.relishes.sparkles. I wonder if that’s true?

Unfortunately, Stephen is dead and we can’t ask him… How about maddest.cuttlefish.vortex? I’d pay to see one of those! Two squares at the local tennis club are limitations.excessively.nerve and beasts.member.incautious. Being a member of said club I can think of some occasions where those words would have been quite apt.

I don’t know whether What3Words have realised it, but in addition to a universal system for physical addresses, they have also stumbled on another way to keep me from working! I simply have to find out what goes on at complications. juxtaposes.ambiguously and who lives at tactless. wondrously.lazed and…

What an Inspirational Day! Simon Does It Again!

On 9 August, the Franschhoek Valley Community Sport Centre celebrated National Women’s Day by hosting a tea for 70 inspirational local women as part of the SHE campaign (SHE is Strong, Healthy, and Employable). And what a special morning it was, as we celebrated five inspirational women who were our guests of honour – Vlam Wessels, Hilda Van Zyl, Wilma Josefs, Christine Jefthas and Raylene Plaatjies.

These ladies were selected during the June holidays through a nomination process, and the guests were invited because they are making a positive difference in our community and support programmes at the centre.

Months of planning went into the day. It couldn’t have been possible without a local inspirational woman, Esta Whitson, who volunteered her time and superb organising skills to help put this event together. Thank you, Esta!

Proceedings started off with a warm welcome by the Dalubuhle Primary School choir, followed by soup and bread, and back massages and pampering in the run-up to the main event. The event was opened with a powerful message by Amy Kleinhans-Curd - Miss South Africa 1992. Her message encouraged women to be who they are and not allow anyone to tell them they are not good enough because each and every one of them is!

Amy’s speech was followed by the launch of a reusable pad, which, in the months to come, will be made at FVCSC to help young girls and women who struggle to afford menstrual pads and sometimes can’t attend school because of this.

Secret Scarf Mission On 9 July “67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela” celebrated their sixth Secret Scarf Mission countrywide. Knitwits for Madiba spent months knitting and crocheting beautiful scarves which are hung up in trees, on poles and anywhere visible for those in need to help themselves to a scarf to keep them warm. Every scarf has a love note attached to it reading “I am not lost, if you are cold and need me, please take me”. Some people wonder what the catch is, but there is no catch, it is for free!

Scarves and beanies – almost 1000 in total – were distributed at St Gilles Church in Lanquedoc, Franschhoek Valley Community Sport Centre and the Lord’s Acre Christian Community Centre in Groendal.

Carolyn Steyn, the founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day started the initiative as a challenge from Nelson Mandela’s assistant in 2014.

In essence, the sermon highlighted three areas in which we can all do better.

This all rests in our mindset of what it means to be a good citizen. It has little to do with the expectations of others, and all to do with our expectations of ourselves as model citizens!

We must be pro-government Part of the problem our country faces is that there are too many people that are either partially or totally dependent on government hand-outs for survival.

Dependent people feel robbed of their self-worth and self-confidence. Frequently this, in turn, means that they feel they have nothing to lose, which in turn means they can do anything without fear of consequence. It also probably means that because they voted for the government of the day that the government owes them more than other citizens of the country.

There are too many people that have come to believe that government must provide everything for free. This is impossible for any government, and especially for ours which is battling major cash-flow issues. It is also unfair on those who have to pay the bills – that is the law-abiding citizens of the country who willingly pay their taxes.

Being pro-government doesn’t just mean a blind uncritical acceptance of any government. It means understanding that the authority to run the country vests entirely with government and we must hold our elected officials to a very high standard but, and this is the critical but, we must support good government because the absence of government is what we see in Syria, South Sudan and other disaster countries around the world.

It is not okay to break the law; it is not okay to drive down the wrong side of the road; it is definitely not okay to plot to steal taxpayers’ money. These are all the antithesis of good government.

We must be peaceful There is absolutely no upside to war. Zero. None.

Nada. And there never will be.

Generosity of spirit and desire to find mutually beneficial ways of dealing with difficult issues comes from and with a peaceful mindset. A mindset which wish to create peace amongst all people. The best human, social and economic conditions are found in countries which have peace as their daily reality.

Look at the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland, Luxembourg and others. They are able to thrive and grow because their focus is on improving the human condition, not on fighting wars. Belligerence begets belligerence. Peace begets peace. Businesses, society and people all benefit from peaceful stable conditions.

It is difficult to fly an aircraft in stormy tempestuous conditions, sometimes even impossible. The same applies to the management of a country or company.

If the conditions are so stormy that all the attention is on the storm, there is no energy or capacity left to deal with flying the country to a prosperous, socially integrated, healthy future.

A better future for all is what we all want. We must support our government, we must contribute to improving and building the society of which we are part, and we must militate for peace. If we strive for these we may just surprise ourselves and many others with just how wonderful a country South Africa, and its

My grandparents had a farm in Franschhoek, so I have known and loved the village since my early childhood. After moving back to the Cape from Johannesburg, where I started my career in travel, I decided to settle in Franschhoek. Franschhoek has some very interesting people living here, who are interested in the world and like to take exciting trips to explore even more. I love assisting them with their travel arrangements.

What do people use an agency for now that anyone can do internet bookings?

Clients use our professional services for everything you can do on the internet, as well as bespoke travel arrangements and complex trips. Travel has become more complex than ever, with new rules all the time, of which the general public cannot always be aware.

From where do you source information on changes in visa and other travel regulations and how easy is it to keep up?

We receive daily updates via our Travelinfo system, as well as special monthly trade publications.

How much of travel is business and how much is leisure?

We focus mainly on leisure, which forms about 80% of our business mix.

What are your responsibilities towards your clients when there are unexpected flight cancellations or airport closures that affect their itineraries?

We have special Apps linked to our booking system that alerts us to changes, and we offer support 24/7 to our clients in case of emergencies/

What is the strangest request you have had from a client?

To get diamond earrings back from a private villa in Thailand. Sounds easy, but it was a nightmare, yet we succeeded! Also a Round the World trip that lasted 4 months, with many exciting stops in between. The trip required a lot of detailed planning, which was very exciting!

Which destinations are currently the cheapest for South Africans and which are the most expensive?

The cheapest remains the Far East, Vietnam and Thailand for instance, whereas Japan is by far the most expensive.

What is still on your personal travel bucket list?

A motorbike trip through Patagonia and Chile.

If you were not a travel agent, what career would you have followed?

I studied Psychology, with Sociology to BA Honours level, so most probably an academic.

“Boys are five times more likely to be autistic than girls.” “Autism affects around 1–2% of all people.” “Communication with an autistic child is impossible.” “All autistic children are epileptics.”

So much has been said, so much has been written. In Mark Haddon’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” we encounter a highly gifted, articulate, autistic teenager. And in the book “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”, the eccentric, intelligent 9-year old has Asperger’s, which is on the spectrum but quite different from autism.

However, all of these myths and half-truths are swept away in “Saving my Sons,” an extraordinary account by Ilana Gerschlowitz of having to raise not one, but two autistic children. The Free State-born author was a young attorney in Johannesburg, happily married to Martin, a businessman. After four years of marriage, they decided to have a baby.

David was born in 2002, and it took 20 months for the parents to realize that he was autistic.

For the next 17 years, Ilana experienced the grim, often nightmarish, experience of not only grappling with David’s condition but then, after giving birth to a healthy boy, Eli, discovering that her third son, Aaron, was also autistic. So she had to confront a situation where she was engaged, day and night, with trying to heal two children that at times hovered between life and death, and raising Eli, an ordinary schoolboy with ordinary schoolboy problems.

This book is a searingly honest personal story of a woman who stubbornly refused to believe that autism was incurable. When she could not find satisfactory medical or psychiatric help in South Africa she travelled to CARD (the Center for Autism and Related Disorders) in California, to consult the world-renowned authority Dr Doreen Granpeesheh.

This encounter made her realize that there was indeed hope for David through the intervention known as ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis).

She was then faced with the choice of leaving South Africa and enrolling David at CARD. Thankfully, her husband’s business partner persuaded the Gershlowitz’s to remain and to start a similar programme locally. Ilana became an activist in the treatment of autism and in 2009 hosted the landmark “Challenging Children” Conference in Johannesburg. This resulted in the establishment of The Star Academy, which now provides formal ABA instruction to parents and practitioners.

The book is really two parallel stories. The first is a detailed explanation of the causes and treatment of autism based on a documentary-style record of David and Aaron’s lives. The second story is the awe-inspiring record of the development of The

Star Academy and related institutes, like the Yellow Canaries in Tembisa. (The treatment of black autistic children by traditional healers is a story in itself. Yet it is very similar to the ignorance displayed by professional psychotherapists in 2002, when severely autistic children would in all likelihood be condemned to correctional institutions, with incurably mentally damaged individuals.)

The first story is probably the most complete and accurate analysis and description of the physiology of autism outside of a medical journal. It describes in detail how autism is closely related to gastrointestinal infections but can mutate throughout the whole body, often lodging in the brain and causing severe fluctuations in temperature. But it also describes the ABA process which is nothing less than a 12-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week, series of stimulations to engage sight, hearing and movement. But any small gain, whether a smile or a half-articulated word, becomes a glorious victory.

This is a truly inspiring, informative book that reads like a thriller. It is also a record of a mother’s indomitable courage and love that simply would not accept that autism can’t be conquered.

Timothy John Adams 30 April 1961 – 6 August 2019

Kobus Stander 20 February 1954 – 20 July 2019 Kobus Stander who has died aged 65, will be remembered for the decorative ironwork and security gates he made for local people and businesses in Franschhoek. A man of many talents, which included jewellery making, building, beer brewing and curing olives to an adapted home recipe which converted people to eat them – even if they said they didn’t like them! He was intrigued by puzzles and was in the process of developing a series of ’trick’ boxes that needed the solving of a puzzle in order to open them.

Living on Artemis with his partner, Andrea Desmond-Smith, he became very interested in sacred geometry, a way of seeing mathematical principles that goes back to Plato and ancient Greek culture. He then built a meeting place on Artemis, which he named “The Salamander Lounge”. It has six sides (the starting principle of sacred geometry) and its diameter is one-millionth the diameter of the earth. At Roca Restaurant his metal cut-outs of ’the seed of life’ and ’the flower of life’ can be seen.

Kobus was born in Randburg and went to the Betsie Verwoerd Primary School. His father died of an inherited kidney disease when he was three, which Kobus inherited. His mother, who is still alive, married again and the family moved to

the Cape. Kobus received a transplanted kidney at the age of 44. This gave him 21 borrowed years.

After this enormous boost to his life expectancy, he created a labyrinth, which is a meditative walk, on Artemis in grateful thanks. He leaves behind his partner Andrea and two daughters by his first marriage, who will sorely miss this gentle giant of a man.

Vehicle for Culture Determined to keep up their theatre-going habit in the winter months of the year, the Franschhoek Culture Vultures bundled up against the cold and perused the culture calenders. The shows they chose were excellent productions.

In June it was the three-part ballet production, Amaranth at Artscape that got the vote. The first ballet on the programme was George Balanchine’s Serenade, danced to Tchaikovsky’s 1880 Serenade for Strings in C, Op. 48. The typical Balanchine choreography of blending classical ballet and modern movement was superb. Of course, the ballerinas did wear the customary blue costumes that inspired the

naming of the Balanchine crater on Mercury!

The second ballet was Transfigured Night by Frank Staff danced to a Schoenberg score. It was the fine execution of en pointe steps in the solos and intimate duets that drew admiration from the audience.

Enemy Behind the Gates, the last of the ballets, is an award-winning work by American choreographer, Christopher L. Huggins. This one

Many locals knew Tim Adams as that tattooed fellow at Essence, but to those close to him, he was so much more than that.

Born in Johannesburg, Tim grew up in what was then Little Italy in Orange Grove. He went to school at St. Andrews in Grahamstown, then the army, He had some colourful stories to tell about all of these experiences. He worked as a chef around Johannesburg before setting off on a wild adventure in Europe and London.

Tim returned to Jozi, where he had a hand in establishing and running several leading restaurants including the Grapevine and Mea Culpa, before starting the successful Café Flo with wife Lisa.

Twelve years ago, Tim and his family semigrated to Franschhoek, where he acquired Essence restaurant.

Larger than life in every respect, Tim was passionate about everything he held dear — from Lisa and his children Joshua, Daniel and Grace, his pack of dogs, cats and those notorious chickens; his funky restaurant decor, his staff and menu; his ink and that pristine BMW, his KTM and his many trinkets and life trophies, everything was always perfect, shipshape and cherished.

To those of us his magnetism attracted to a cuppa every morning, his Jozi and even London mates who’d periodically pitch up to put Timmy back on the plane and stir up a ruckus of note and the locals and visitors who endured those many

beautiful, mad dinners at his home, Adams was a great friend, a very special person.

Strong as a bull both physically and mentally, with a sharp wit and vast general knowledge acquired through his broad experience at the University of Life, Tim stood tall as husband, father and friend. One thing Tim will however never know is how his passing would rock Franschhoek — the intense reaction to his passing both at home and away would certainly have humbled him…

We are going to miss you my China.

blew everyone away! It was the first time the ballet was performed by so many dancers; sixty in all!

Precision, speed, arabesques and more made for the most impressive work one could hope to see and had everyone talking.

The Culture Vultures went home thrilled that they had gone to the ballet. It was deserving of the local group’s elegant toast with glasses of chilled Leopard’s Leap MCC and wine. What a joy it was for them to go home without being responsible for the driving!

The July outing was Kinky Boots at the Fugard Theatre. It was a “not to be missed” overseas production with a talented local cast. The show had won awards on Broadway and the music was by Christina Aguilera after all.

Once again local talent proved to be top-notch.

A well-chosen cast entertained the audience with singing, dancing, humour and a satisfying story. No wonder it had been described as an ‘adrenalinepacked masterpiece’. It was wonderful to see Earl Gregory again; this time as a drag queen! Moods were lifted and hearts were warmed as the audience cheered and cheered when the curtain came down.

A happy Franschhoek group took up their seats in the waiting bus and Patrick drove them home expertly. They were already looking forward to their next outing to see Sleeping Beauty.

Digitally Documenting La Motte’s Heritage The Franschhoek Valley is steeped in history with centuries-old vineyards and plentiful charming historic Cape Dutch buildings. La Motte Wine Estate understands the importance of preserving its heritage and recently explored the validity and benefits of digitally documenting their historic buildings.

The estate boasts four provincial monuments – the Manor House, Jonkershuis, Historic Cellar and the Water Mill (c1751-1785). All the structures have been fully restored following the purchase of La Motte by Dr Anton Rupert in 1970. The Water Mill is the only working water mill of its kind in the Franschhoek Valley. True to its principle of sharing its attributes, La Motte has also introduced a conducted tour of the historic buildings on the estate.

Modena Design Centres – Cape Town saw an opportunity to engage with a like-minded establishment resulting in the idea of digitally recording the Historic Mill at La Motte. A Faro Focus3D 130S HDR Scanner was used to digitally capture the building. Quality, resolution and range differs vastly between different laser scanners and -models. The process involved a combination of HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos and highquality scans, providing a near identical quality and resolution for both the scan data and the imagery.

The following images depict external and internal scans of the historic mill, showing the differences between the captured scan data and HDR photos.

Specialised software, such as Autodesk Recap Pro consequently allow a user to visualise point cloud

data in many ways for a wide range of applications.

These include determining RGB values, point cloud elevations, point cloud intensities, point cloud normals, and scan locations. A great benefit of working with point clouds is that one can section cut the point cloud easily and determine angles and distances.

The estate accordingly saw the potential of laser scanning to not only assist with the dimensional, volumetric and as-built recording of a space, but to further potentially support numerous facilities management processes.

Utilising point cloud geometry in various 3D modelling software packages, enables designers to eliminate costly mistakes during construction, reduce construction costs, allows for better asbuilt reliability and quality assurance, and perhaps most important of all, improves transparency, communication and collaboration.
