THE Frankston line will have a mix of above and below ground level rail as part of the state government’s plan to separate road from rail at level crossings and homes may be compulsory acquired to remove the crossing at Charman Rd in Cheltenham. Labor Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan visited Edithvale train station last Tuesday morning (6 September) to unveil options for the removal of level crossings at eight sites along the rail line. The state government is now asking for community feedback on the flagged designs for each crossing before deciding on the final designs early next year. The Level Crossing Removal Authority, a Department of Transport body, will host several community consultation sessions, where residents can see detailed design plans, in September and October. Ms Allan acknowledged design options were originally slated to be unveiled mid-year but she said the government and the LXRA decided to take more time to “get it right”. “Each site needs to be looked at individually and each project needs to be assessed on the particular environmental issues ... and road considerations,” Ms Allan told The Times.

“We’re going to take the advice of the expert engineers and have a planning process as well to ensure we get the right outcome at each location.” A ‘rail trench’ and ‘rail bridge’ are options for level crossings at Seaford, Bonbeach, Edithvale, Mentone and Cheltenham. A rail bridge may be built at a new crossing at Macleod Rd in Carrum and the Station St crossing could be shut and a new rail bridge built at Eel Race Rd. A new ‘road connection’ at Station St over the Patterson River is also being looked at as an option. The state government says a trench cannot be dug at Carrum due to nearby Patterson River. The government says there is no option at Skye Rd in Frankston – rail over road must be built due to an overland flood plain. Voters’ feelings about how level crossing removals along the Frankston line are handled could prove crucial to the re-election chances of Labor state MPs in marginal ‘sandbelt’ seats including Tim Richardson (Mordialloc), Sonya Kilkenny (Carrum) and Paul Edbrooke (Frankston) in 2018. The trio joined Ms Allan at the design options announcement in Edithvale and said they hope to hear from as many people as possible so the design is “the right one” for each community. Space goal a reality for Ethan BEING vision impaired has not affected Seaford student Ethan Connolly-Kelly’s spirit and determination. The 16-year-old student at Seaford’s Nepean School has been selected to head off to Alabama in the US this month for a Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students (SICVIS). Ethan was born with rare medical condition, septo-optic dysplasia and optic nerve hypoplasia, and is legally blind. At age three he had a stroke and spent several months in the Royal Children’s Hospital, after which he endured years of therapy and had to learn to walk and talk again. His grandmother Suzanne Kelly said that despite his physical challenges Ethan shows great empathy and support for others. “Ethan is an incredible young man

who is courageous, resilient and extremely dedicated to achieving his goals.” Ms Kelly said Ethan had been doing some public speaking trying to raise community awareness about his rare medical condition and “give back to the community by sharing his journey”. “It is an absolute joy to be able to see him realise the goal that he has been working on for two years to participate in SCIVIS and his dream is to be able to visit as much as he can of the world and to make new friends from all over the world.” Ethan said the camp offered a lot of opportunity for individual challenges, as well as working in roles and being part of a team working together. “Ever since I found out about the camp from my teacher in 2014, it’s

been my goal and dream to get to get there,” he said. “I hope by participating in space camp I will be able to share my experiences, to give hope and to break down barriers that all things are possible and to strive for dreams and goals.” Over five days students will participate in a range of activities and challenges, including scuba diving in a simulated space environment under water, aviation challenges, obstacle courses and a 49 foot rock climbing wall. Participants will learn about astronomy and science, participate in simulated space challenges and discover rocket science. At the end students attend a 4-hour space mission, using all the skills they’ve learned. Liz Bell

Councillors criticise MP Neil Walker neil@baysidenews.com.au FRANKSTON councillors have publicly attacked Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke over comments he made in state parliament and on Facebook over their failure to correctly sign a new code of conduct. All nine Frankston councillors were among more than 100 councillors across Victoria who faced expulsion from public office after administrative blunders while lodging paperwork to sign up to a state government-mandated code of conduct before a 4 July deadline. State legislation to give councillors a new deadline of 22 February next year was passed to save them from expulsion ahead of municipal elections on 22 October. Mr Edbrooke questioned why Frankston Council “cannot sign a document properly” and why council it should be let off the hook when he could be fined for being “two minutes late getting back to my car in a council car park” (“Council saved from sack”, The Times 22/8/16). Councillors unanimously voted at the latest public Frankston Council meeting on 29 August to write to Mr Edbrooke and Premier Daniel Andrews “expressing our concerns about the negative comments he made in Parliament and also in the local press about council”. Several councillors criticised Mr Edbrooke and at times got personal when complaining he did not con-

sult council or give credit for projects such as the Robinsons Rd roundabout improvements originally flagged by council. “He’s probably younger than every one of the councillors,” Cr Sandra Mayer said. “He lives in Mt Eliza and I think he should show a little bit of respect for the nine people who actually live in the area who are grassroots and the level of government closest to the community. “I have always respected him and I just wish he gave me the same courtesy and the council as well.” Cr Colin Hampton, a member of the Labor Party for more than four decades, likened Mr Edbrooke’ criticism of council to that of former contro-

versial Frankston Liberal turned independent MP Geoff Shaw. Cr Hampton noted Mr Edbrooke has a margin of “less than 400 votes” and said continual criticism of council could see the Labor MP lose the seat of Frankston. “If he keeps going this way he will not get back into parliament. I will be really peeved if that doesn’t happen because I’ve worked my bum off to get the Labor Party into power in this area and someone is starting to throw it away, as happened with Mr Shaw.” Cr Glenn Aitken claimed a $4.9 million refurbishment of Wells St including the installation of new seats and “state of the art” street lights would provide better value for money than a state government planned $13

million revamp of Young St, also near Frankston train station. “I have seen the plans for Young St – they’re underwhelming.” Cr Aitken said he was puzzled at Mr Edbrooke’s critical stance on council. “When he was elected I thought ‘he’s a nice looking young man, he’s very presentable. He’s fresh, he’s enthusiastic’ so I can’t for the life of me understand why he’s doing this to himself,” Cr Aitken said. “He’s a nice looking young man, he’s got the world at his feet. Why would you consistently sling mud at the area you represent by way of criticism of the local government?” Cr Darrel Taylor, a Liberal Party member, showed a rare moment of bipartisanship by agreeing with Cr Hampton’s comments about Mr Edbrooke and said the Labor MP used council as “a whipping boy”. “Mr Edbrooke has been thrown out of parliament four times by his own Speaker but he wants to highlight the behaviour of individual councillors. “He’s got to understand that he’s actually attacking his own city and it will reflect badly on him as a representative of his city if he continues to take a negative tone towards the city of Frankston.” When contacted Mr Edbrooke said he is too busy working towards making Frankston a better place to spend time arguing with individual councillors. “‘You don’t attract over $250 million worth of investment to your community without ruffling some feathers,” he said. “The reality at state government level is that strong voices get things done.”

On line crossing removals Continued from Page 1 Liberal state opposition spokesman for planning David Davis dubbed the Frankston line plan as ‘roller coaster rail’ and said a series of rail bridges and trenches “is more about politics than engineering”. “The Big Dipper belongs at Luna Park, not on the Frankston line,” he said in a statement. “This is a panicked knee-jerk reaction from [Premier] Daniel Andrews and confirms he’s playing politics on level crossing removals. “It also sends a message to those homeowners on the Pakenham line that the marginal seats along the Frankston line are being treated differently.” Mr Davis called extended elevated rail on the Pakenham line a “monstrosity”. Construction on the level crossing removals along the Frankston line will begin in early 2018. See your.levelcrossings.vic.gov.au for further details and ways to provide feedback to the LXRA. Ms Allan said work would not be completed at all eight level crossings by the time of the next state election but she believed voters will appreciate the complexities and vast scale of the projects and will see progress being made.

All you need is love, love is all you need CARING for someone else’s child may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but for Helen Fox of Frankston North, it’s what she does best. Ms Fox has been “mum” to more than 300 children during her 29 years as a foster carer, and she’s not ready to stop just yet. “When I can’t hold a baby in my arms anymore, that’s when I’ll stop,” she said. Ms Fox’s tremendous generosity was recognised last week by OzChild, which awarded her the prestigious Rob Clark Protecting Children award. With four children of her own, it has not always been an easy decision to take in children in need, but Ms Fox said the experience had been reward-

ing beyond words. “I’ve made a lot of friends and many loving, lifelong connections, with of my past foster children still come to see me and bringing their own children to visit.” As a 23-year-old just moving into a new house, and with a toddler of her own, Ms Fox received her first charge – a baby. Two more came straight after the first, and the door did not stop opening. “Yes, it was pretty scary at first, but the reward of seeing frightened and helpless children leave your care happier and more secure is all I need,” she said. “When I first started all those years ago, I thought I’d take in a couple of pre-adoptive babies and give it up when they went after about six months. “But I couldn’t say no and the ba-

POKIES bankrupted the Frankston Football Club. The Dolphins went into voluntary administration late last month as the club struggled under large debts and the administrators called in by the club have now confirmed most of the club’s debts are related to pokies machines licences. Worrells Solvency and Forensic Accountants, administrators called in by the club, revealed at a creditors meeting last Wednesday (7 September) that the footy club owes the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation about $475,000 and $230,000 to Tabcorp. Both debts are related to 27 electronic

gaming machines the Dolphins decided to remove from its new $3.4 million function centre in May to make the venue pokies free. Frankston Council is also owed $68,000 for unpaid rent, the administrator confirmed. Worrells confirmed all debts, including unsecured debts, total about $1 million. The administrator has tapped former Melbourne Storm CEO Ron Gauci, who comes to Frankston with a reputation for turning around troubled businesses, to help a possible restructure of the football club and its finances. bies and children kept coming.” OzChild CEO Lisa Sturzenegger said Ms Fox was nominated by OzChild staff and the principal at Seaford Park Primary School for her “warmth, strength, no-nonsense attitude and wicked sense of humour that makes foster children feel welcome and loved.” Ms Fox’s case worker Ashanti Kulasekera said Helen was an “incredibly committed carer” who dedicates her life to ensuring children are safe, nurtured and loved. “She always puts the needs of others before her own and is very well known in her community for doing so”. OzChild is looking for more people willing to become foster carers. If you are interested in becoming a foster carer, call 9212 3900.

club when he was called in to assist in 2010 after the rugby club faced sanctions over salary cap breaches. “Drawing on Mr Gauci’s expertise will give the Frankston Football Club the best possible chance of survival and assist in obtaining an outcome that is in the best interest of both the club and its creditors,” Mr Burness said. Worrells says it will meet with club members, staff, players, sponsors, and those with functions booked at the club as soon as it is possible. The administrator said it is working with AFL Victoria to try to ensure the club remains a VFL club. Neil Walker

Neil Walker neil@baysidenews.com.au LAWYERS paid ratepayers’ money to investigate and arbitrate internal disputes between Frankston councillors have expressed concerns over “considerable expense for council” when ruling on unsubstantiated code of conduct complaints. Ratepayers will foot the bill running to tens of thousands of dollars for at least three arbitration sittings in the past two months (“Costly conduct for ratepayers”, The Times 5/9/16). Council CEO Dennis Hovenden and mayor Cr James Dooley refuse to give specific or ballpark figures for the legal fees. “Council is unable to comment on these matters as they remain confidential,” Cr Dooley, council’s official spokesman as mayor, said in a statement last week. “To do so would breach the Local Government Act and the investigation process.” The Times can reveal that legal representatives found complaints by Cr Glenn Aitken against Cr Darrel Taylor and Cr Rebekah Spelman over comments made to the press about a $3.5 million Wells St revamp that rose to $4.9 million were without merit. A separate complaint by Cr Dooley against Cr Taylor about email correspondence was also dismissed by an independent arbitrator paid to investigate and make a code of conduct ruling.

Crs Suzette Tayler and Darrel Taylor were found to have breached council’s code of conduct by a legal representative brought in by council in a third arbitration hearing over some comments made on Facebook. The pair said they were unable to comment on specific investigations

a ‘considerable expense’ New code of conduct ‘is a disgrace’ FRANKSTON councillors are now rebelling against the new state government sanctioned code of conduct having escaped expulsion from public office after a last-minute reprieve by the Labor state government to give councillors a new deadline of 2 February next year to correctly sign documentation. At the latest public council meeting Cr Colin Hampton, despite signing the revised code of conduct, said he is unhappy at the new code and said it restricts councillors’ right to speak out. “This code of conduct is a disgrace - it’s treating councillors like children and forcing us to sign a document that’s draconian, undemocratic and an absolute attack on freedom of speech,” Cr Hampton said. “It doesn’t allow you as a councillor to speak your mind and that’s what democracy is all about. “You might not like what someone has to say but at least when you’re a councillor you can put an alternate point of view.” Cr Hampton said there are now instances where councillors will be penalised for expressing opinions. at The Deck bar in Frankston late last year. In June, Cr Hampton was found by an independent panel, convened by the Municipal Association of Victoria, to have breached code of conduct clauses in the Local Government Act over the way he “aggressively” spoke

to two council employees in public at The Deck. Cr Dooley’s subsequent complaint about Cr Taylor related to an email Cr Taylor sent to the mayor and all other Frankston councillors about Cr Dooley, as mayor and chair of public council meetings, allowing his no-

Cr Brian Cunial publicly acknowledged for the first time that Frankston Council had blundered when submitting signed code of conduct paperwork. “There was a mistake that was nobody’s fault in that the signatures were supposed to be in front of the CEO,” he said at the meeting. “We didn’t know that and the CEO [Dennis Hovenden] obviously wasn’t aware of that at the

tice of motion at June’s public council meeting about auditing Wells St costs to be amended by Cr Aitken to include audits on other major projects in Frankston (“Street spending under scrutiny”, The Times 14/6/16). The independent arbitrator found Cr Taylor had not breached council’s

time. It was an honest mistake. It’s been fixed. It’s just a load of garbage, in my view.” Cr Glenn Aitken acknowledged “council hasn’t always been entirely exemplary”. “We know that at times councillors … don’t always interact as would be seen as most desirable. It’s called democracy but sometimes it does step over the bounds a little bit.” He sarcastically dubbed state MPs as “a shining bunch of angels” and noted they can say what they want to say without any sort of reprisal due to parliamentary privilege protections not afforded to councillors. At neighbouring Mornington Peninsula Shire council, Cr Hugh Fraser signed the new code of conduct but included the comment “signed under protest”. Cr Fraser was one of 107 councillors, including all nine at Frankston, who faced the axe before the Labor state government introduced legislation to give all councillors a new deadline next year to corectly sign the new code. All candidates who are elected as councillors at 22 October elections will have to sign the existing code of conduct within one month of taking office. Neil Walker

code of conduct in the wording of his email to the mayor. Cr Dooley said he could not comment last week, citing Local Government Act restrictions and the investigation process. Cr Aitken said he was unable to comment when contacted about his

Girl power: The team at Peninsula Strikers is giving the competition a run for their money.

Strikers make their mark in soccer THE girls at Peninsula Strikers are showing them how it’s done in the fast-paced and growing world of female soccer. The club finished the season last year mid field but has turned the tables on the competition to scoop three major winds this year. Coach James Waller said the Peninsula Strikers under-13/14 girls showed their spirit early by winning the pre-season event at Darebin, then

later becoming league winners for the FFV south east under-13/14B league, before winning the state championships against the undefeated Watsonia Heights last Sunday week. Mr Waller said the grand final at Watsonia was nail biting, with forward Jasmine Ristevski getting a hat trick and 32 goals for the season after extra time, and strikers winning 5-4 on penalties. “Our keeper and player of the

season Tahlia Jackson, who saved Watsonia’s first penalty, finished the job by scoring the last spot kick”. Mr Waller said the club started the season with fairly low expectations, but the girls had worked hard and were getting the recognition they deserved. “It’s a real achievement as the core team of 14 are small in stature, but they have used great teamwork, spirit and self-belief to beat a lot of

bigger stronger teams.” Club president Steve Schreck said the club was growing in size and success. “In 2016 we have 111 girls, with 55 new to the club, we have eight all-girls teams, with more girls in the under-7 squads too.” He said Peninsula Strikers remained the destination club for girls for “fun and development” in the southern Victoria region.

Cook-off capers IT was a test of culinary skill as much as concentration for 40 students from Frankston and Mornington Peninsula schools competing in the 2016 VCAL cook-off competition this month. Students competed in groups against one another on Thursday 1 September to create a winning main meal and dessert. The contestants were then judged by a panel of local chefs, including the Peninsula Larder’s Rodney Graham, and the chairman of the Food Industry Advisory Body (FIAB). The main course winner was Will Faska and Mat Elvy from Padua College, and runner up went to Talia Gordon and Katlyn Gale from SkillsPlus and BRACE. The dessert winner was Ben

Airey and Malinda Tredinnick from Naranga School and runner up went to Rosebud Secondary College students Ashley Hardy and Kaitlyn Mc Laughlin. Held at Frankston’s START Training Centre at Chisholm TAFE, the competition was organised by the Frankston Mornington Peninsula Local Learning and Employment Network and the Peninsula VCAL Association, with support from both Mornington Peninsula Shire and Frankston Council.

ANOTHER CULTURE AND MAKE FRIENDS FOR LIFE!

‘No dummies’ in council elections DUMMY council candidates will find it tougher to run at council elections next month after an 11th-hour state legislative change banned postal ‘how to vote’ cards ahead of next month’s council elections. ‘Dummies’ have no intention of winning ward elections to represent their community but instead put their name up to funnel preferences to legitimate candidates, often in agreement with candidates seeking election. Such preferences can get council candidates over the line if they do not win enough votes in their own right. “The armies of dummy candidates lining up to run in this year’s council elections will have to think again,” state Liberal opposition planning spokesman David Davis said. “Removing how-to-vote cards from the postal

pack will mean stooge and dummy candidates running to harvest votes and preference them to a lead candidate will face bigger obstacles.” All votes for the 22 October election will be made by post. While candidates cannot include ‘how to vote’ information in official Victorian Electoral Commission ballot packs mailed to voters they can still include preferences information in advertisements and election material letterboxed or handed out to voters. Twenty-one candidates competed for nine Frankston councillor spots, representing three wards, at the 2012 council election. Crs Rebekah Spelman (North-West Ward) and Darrel Taylor (South Ward) were elected partly due to preferences last time around after not finishing in the top three for their respective

wards on first preferences. Victorian Electoral Commission figures show just under 69 per cent of 33,223 enrolled voters actually voted in 2012 and 3.35 per cent lodged informal votes that were not counted. A staggering fifty-two candidates nominated to run for nine councillor spots in neighbouring Kingston Council in 2012. Candidates for Frankston Council can register with the VEC from Thursday 15 September and nominations close at noon on Tuesday 20 September. Ballot packs will be mailed to voters on Tuesday 4 October-Thursday 6 October and voting closes 6pm on Friday 21 October. See vec.vic.gov.au or call 131 832 for further information. Neil Walker

Frankston Times 12 September 2016

POLICE are looking for a brazen thief who stole a car, cash and personal items after ransacking the bags of staff at Woolworths’ stores in Frankston, Mornington and Mornington East last week. The man, who was captured on CCTV at all stores entering the staff area and taking items, first offended during the day at Frankston on Wednesday, where it is believed he also took a Woolworths uniform. The next day about 2.30pm he entered the staff area at Mornington Woolworths, where he again went through staff personal belongings. When interrupted by a female employee, he told her he was sent there from another store “to help”. Senior Sergeant Peter Drake at Peninsula CIU said the woman later discovered her keys were missing and her Mitsubishi Lancer had been stolen from the carpark. It is believed the same man targeted Woolworths at Mornington East on or around the same day. The suspect was aged in his 20s, skinny and wearing a Woolworths shirt and a black cap and black pants. Sen Sgt Drake said the CCTV footage showed the offender “brazenly” pretending to be a staff member and accessing staff areas before taking items. Liz Bell

Youth on theft, bail counts A FRANKSTON teenager was among eight youths arrested on Sunday night, 4 September, as part of Operation Cosmas. The 14-year-old was charged by Northern Metropolitan Regional Crime Squad investigators with theft of a motor vehicle and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He was remanded to appear at a children’s court at a later date. The youths’ arrests followed two alleged aggravated burglaries and a carjacking within one hour in the north western suburbs. The arrests came after police swooped on a vacant house in Ceratta Crescent, Tarneit, following reports of two men there premises about 4.50pm. The youths jumped a back fence with police in hot pursuit and were arrested a short time later. Police searched the house and allegedly found items relating to two aggravated burglaries earlier in De Havilland Drive, Williams Landing and Caraleena Way, Tarneit. In the first incident in Williams Landing, two men allegedly smashed a rear sliding door of the home, armed themselves with a knife and confronted the resident demanding his car keys, about 5am. They fled in the victim’s red Ford Festiva. In the second incident four men forced their way into a Tarneit house by smashing a rear glass sliding door before allegedly stealing car keys and a black 2009 Holden Commodore about 5.45am. The occupants of the home, who have a young baby, forcibly held their bedroom door closed to stop one of the intruders getting in while he kicked holes in the bedroom door. Following the arrest of the pair in Ceratta Crescent police were again called to the property when

six teenagers were seen there about 6.30pm. When police arrived they saw a red Ford, believed to have been stolen from Williams Landing, turning away with six people inside. They followed the car to Baratta Rd where all six teens were arrested. North Metro Crime Squad investigators are also investigating whether those arrested were involved in an attempted carjacking in Jamieson Way, Point Cook, about 5am Sunday. Police were told eight men – two reportedly armed with iron bars – surrounded the car and tried to open the doors which were locked. They smashed a rear window before the victim managed to accelerate away, with two of the offenders rolling onto the bonnet and off the side of the car. Those arrested are all males and include a 14-year-old from South Yarra, 14-year-old from Frankston, 16-year-old from Fitzroy North, 16-year-old from Tarneit, 14-year-old from Burnside, 15-year-old from Kings Park, 15-year-old from Carlton and 16-year-old from Tarneit. The 15-year-old from Carlton and 16-year-old from Tarneit have since been release pending further inquiries. The others remain in custody. “Police have escalated their response to aggravated burglaries and carjackings,” Leading Senior Constable Julie-Anne Newman said. Operation Cosmas aims to prevent, deter and investigate aggravated burglaries and carjackings. Day and night patrols are being conducted at high risk locations. Since the operation began there have been over 150 arrests. Stephen Taylor

Police car rammed, pelted

A MAN in a stolen Toyota Camry threw heavy objects at a police highway patrol car during a wild chase in the Frankston and Carrum Downs areas, midnight, Friday 2 September. Police were forced to abort the chase near McCormack’s Rd when the car, with four or five passengers inside, began to drive erratically. Several hours later an off-duty officer driving home from the station along Frankston-Dandenong Rd in a private car was targeted by the same offenders. As he pulled alongside the Camry the driver, aged in his late teens or early 20s, threw a heavy object at his car, forcing him to slow down and take evasive action. The Camry driver forced his way in behind the detective and rammed his car twice – the second time near the Hall Rd BP service station – as he did a U-turn to drive back to the police station. The offenders disappeared into a factory area. The Camry was found next morning in Lobator St, Frankston. A witness said she saw a man run towards Excelsior Drive wearing a windcheater. The car had been stolen from the driveway of a house in Fifth St, Parkdale, 9pm, Thursday 1 September. The owner had left it in the driveway with the motor running and the keys in the ignition while he unloaded groceries. Detective Senior Constable Chris Nieuwesteeg, of Frankston CIU, described the offenders as male, Caucasian, late teens-early 20s, with short hair, and wearing windcheaters. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

Images of the peninsula’s ‘people’ PHOTOGRAPHER Daryl Gordon has an image for the future. Actually, he has many images for the future. Fascinated by the photography since he was eight, the Balnarring father of three regards all of his shots as historical records. “It's really difficult to put a finger on why [I was attracted to photography]. I guess I love the power that a single image can carry and the archival nature of photography,” Gordon says. Although the images he shoots as a commercial photographer may or may not be seen by the client as having any historical value, there is no doubt that at some time in the future they will provide some reference to the past. However, an ongoing project of Gordon’s is more certain to gain more attention. Fourteen years ago he decided to photograph “peninsula people”. As a photographer with the Hastings-based Independent News Group, Gordon found himself having access “to a lot of interesting people”. “I thought I’d like to document these people for history’s sake; that’s the main driving force behind my photography, whether anybody in the future will care doesn't bother me,” Gordon says. A selection of photographs from his Peninsula People series will be exhibited at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery from 24 September to 20 November. “Clearly I didn't photograph every person and, to me, some were quite a personal experience - photographing colleagues for example,” he says. “The common denominator throughout the whole series was to show the public and private side of the subject. Most people have a public persona and I guess I was trying to

show a little more of the private persona. Gordon says he chooses his subjects “through a gut feeling” and tries to get to know them – if even if just for half an hour – before beginning the shoot. “Lots of personality types interest me [although] the overriding type of subject in this exhibition is the creative type. “Most people were photographed in their creative spaces or homes, which were one and the same at times.” An exception to people from a professional creative background is Flinders MP, Greg Hunt. Gordon says he gave his subjects “minimal” directions but “insisted on their need to make contact with me [through the lens] and, therefore, the future viewer”. The Peninsula People project is ongoing and Gordon credits his former colleague and now photographer for The News, Yanni Dellaportas, for pressuring him to “put a start and a finish date” on choosing images for the current exhibition. “I get leads from the subjects I shoot by asking if they know anyone else who would like to have their portraits done for this project. Like the roots of a tree, you never quite know where it will take me or end up,” Gordon says. “The exhibition is sort of a vindication of the portraiture work that I have done and what I continue to do. The selected works, as a group, will hopefully show the effects of the passage of time over all of us and the varied yet common links through all of us; our commonality as human beings.” Peninsula People, portraits by Daryl Gordon, Saturday 24 September – Wednesday 20 November, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Civic Reserve, Dunns Rd, Mornington, darylgordonphotography.com.au Keith Platt

100 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK...

Two brave peninsula lads killed Compiled by Melissa Walsh WE regret to have to record that it is reported that two more of our brave Peninsula lads have been killed while fighting in France in defence of their country. We refer to Private George Harrison, son of Mr L. Harrison, of the Grand Hotel, Mornington, and Private Coxhell of the same town. *** THE Peninsula Motor Garage Pty Ltd., has purchased a fine building allotment in the Main St Mornington, and is calling for tenders for the building of a large up to date brick garage, and manager’s residence. A modern plant has already been purchased by this Company. *** A RATHER serious accident happened to Mr W. Horrod, as he was making his way home from Frankston on the 2nd inst., in trying conclusions with a motor car which was proceeding in an opposite direction. He was severely cut about the face, his nose requiring several stitches. The pony was also cut about a good deal, while the wagonette was a wreck. The car was only slightly damaged. *** A PAINFUL accident happened on Thursday evening to Private W. D. Brice of the No. 2 Guard, Langwarrin, as he was returning from Melbourne. As the train was approaching the station it is not known whether he jumped out or fell out, but he was found on the line with his foot terribly crushed. After being rendered first aid by Dr Maxwell, he was conveyed by

motor ambulance to the Base Hospital the same evening. *** THE “Wattles Club” held a very successful dance on Wednesday evening last, the object being to raise funds to obtain crockery for their many entertainments. The Club has already received splendid donations, and with the proceeds of this dance, should be able to secure the necessary articles which will mean so much saving of labor and time for those who bear the brunt of carrying out the soldiers’ entertainments. *** IT was decided at a recent meeting to hold the next dance in aid of our local Red Cross, on September 30th, and a plain and fancy dress ball in October, in aid of the District Roll of Honor. *** MESSRS Adamson, Strettle and Co have a large entry of stock for their monthly sale at Tanti on Monday next—see advertised list in this issue. *** THE Gibson Pantomime Comedy Company will appear at Somerville on Tuesday evening and at Frankston on Wednesday evening, 19th and 20th insts., in the new original Pantomime Comedy “Fun on a Battleship” supported by a brilliant company of 14 artists prominent among them being “Little Trixie” in her original and wonderful act on chairs and see-saw, which is entirely her own. *** WHAT Will Become of Our Girls ? The important question of how the

war will affect the future of the girlhood of Australia and New Zealand is seriously discussed in the September number of “Everylady’s Journal,” which has just reached us. Such points are discussed as the right of girls to hold men’s positions after the war ; the possibility for a wider sphere for women in commercial life; the diminished or the increased chances of marriage and the opportunity for a better financial future for women generally. The Hon. George Swinburne, Mrs Walter Griffin (wife of the designer of the Federal Capital), Mr H. J. Manson (New Zealand’s representative in Australia), Mr King OMalley, and other notable people, all contribute to the discussion in “Everylady’s Journal”. This September number is rich in other special articles. There is for example, a long and fascinating description of a Sydney lady who possesses an extraordinary gift of music, and who composes and plays on the piano in a state of sub-consciousness, the most brilliant and intricate pieces. Madame Melba contributes an article on “The right way to sing.” Mr William Sherrie, the well known journalist and nature writer, supplies a story of the Bell Bird ; and the month’s article on Australian Home Industries deals with the breeding of canaries. As usual, the many fashion designs are excellent, and the household departments are full of up-to-date and valuable matter, Several free patterns

are given with the September issue of “Everylady’s Journal,” thus rounding it out as an ideal woman’s magazine. *** AUSTRALIAN Expeditionary Forces. Recruits wanted. Every man physically fit is wanted. Conditions of enlistment - Age — 18 to 45 years. Minimum height— 5 feet 2 inches. Chest measurement— 33 inches. Persons desirous to enlist should apply at the nearest Town Hall, Shire Hall, Drill Hall, or Recruiting Depot, where arrangements will be made for medical examination. Persons who are considered suitable will be granted free Railway tickets to the Metropolis for final medical examination and enlistment. RATES OF PAY PER DAY. (Prior to Embarkation) Lieutenant ... ... ... 15s Sergeant ... ... ... ... 10s Corporal .... ... ... ... 9s Private ... ... ... ... ... 5s On and from date of Embarkation (including deferred pay ). *** TANTI Market. Monday, 4th September. Alex. Scott and Co., report—A good yarding of sheep and pigs, but only a moderate supply of cattle. All classes of pigs were in good demand at fully last months rates—Baconers to £4 4s, best porkers to 53s, good to 48s, light to 42s; stores to 38s, slips to 30s, suckers 15s to 25s. We sold for Messrs Symonds 130 crossbred wethers to 42s 9d, and fat lambs to 28s; Mr G. Jones, ewes and wethers to 31s 9d, weaners at 26s 9d Jones

Bros 20 weaners at 24s 8d. Mr F. C. Doherty, 4 pet lambs to 41s. Mr R. Cairns, 4 fat bullocks at 16s 6d. Milkers to £9 10s springers to £10, heifers to £8 5s, forward heifers to £10 10s, Mr W. Blackburn, Rye, 10 heifers out of condition at £72, Estate late John Doherty, 2 unbroken light geldings at £9. *** BITTERN North Cooperative Association. The above association held their monthly meeting at Cr Turner’s residence on Saturday 9th, and it was decided to arrange about getting the title for the piece of land donated by Joseph Turner Esq.,for recreation purposes, and to have it fenced with posts and wire having two cyclone gates, large and small, the fence posts being given by members of the committee while the cost of the wire and gates will be covered by donations by members. At next meeting it will be arranged to have a working bee when members and their wives and friends will roll up and in a very short time a startling amount of improvements will be effected, the workers being all thoroughly used to hard bush work. Before the meeting closed the chairman brought up the advisability of again laying before the Minister of Railways, the great and vital need of constructing a central railway through the Peninsula. *** From the pages of the Mornington Standard, 16 September, 1916

Blues climb to top of mountain NEPEAN LEAGUE GRAND FINAL By Toe Punt

HASTINGS are the 2016 Nepean League Premiers. The Blues defied the odds, won three cutthroat finals and dominated for 120 minutes in the Grand Final on Saturday to be crowned the kings of Nepean League football. It was the Blues’ first flag since 1995. Hastings kept Frankston goalless in the opening half and led 6.8 (44) to 0.9 (9). The Bombers came back hard in the third quarter and had a shot for goal to reduce the margin to 10 points. The shot missed, the Blues went coast-to-coast and kicked their sole goal of the third term to extend their lead to 21 points. The game was effectively over at that point, the Blues booting four goals to three in the last to win 11.15 (81) to 6.18 (54). It was a tough Nepean League season – arguably the closest ever. There were seven teams in the competition with genuine claims to the flag at various stages throughout the 16-round season. There was one team though that perhaps had more claims than the others – Hastings. At the halfway mark of the season, Hastings was the best team in it, and a game clear on top of the table after 10 rounds. But it wasn’t until the line-in-the-sand game against Sorrento mid-season that the Blues shifted up a gear. The Blues knew they had what it took to win the flag – they certainly had the cattle. Although if the group didn’t collectively buy into the Brendan Dunne coaching style and game plan, achieving the ultimate success was going to be a struggle. Against Sorrento, on a cold and wet day and on a boggy track, the Blues found something. They were challenged by the Sharks but found a way to get down, get dirty and win. The Blues found real belief on that day. Hastings had a really tough road to the finals – then it had the toughest of roads to the final day. Hastings took on Red Hill, Rosebud, Sorrento, Somerville and Crib Point in their final six games. They also played Frankston at Frankston in the final home and away game of the season. That match meant everything to the Bombers to finish on top of the ladder. Hastings wasn’t going to move on the ladder on that day and rested Paul Rogasch, Josh Mulheron and Dunne. The Blues knew what they needed to get out of that game – they planned on facing the Bombers again. Frankston Bombers’ path took a very different route. At the conclusion of the home and away season, Frankston found itself clear at the top of the ladder. Frankston’s last six games of the season were against the bottom five sides in Crib Point, Tyabb, Devon Meadows, Dromana and Pearcedale (as well as Hastings). The Bombers had a week’s break, won through to the Grand Final after beating Rosebud in the second semi and then had another week off. Some would say it was the ideal preparation – the Bombers were certainly rested. Hastings were ‘match hardened’. Question was, when would the petrol tickets run out? Many thought it would be on grand final day on a warm afternoon at Frankston Park, a ground 20m longer than any in the MPNFL. Was the toughest of tough campaigns going to take its toll? No way, if you were a Hastings player or supporter. Hastings stalwart and media personality Kevin Miles maintained throughout the finals series that “Hastings’ best was better than any

Winners are grinners: Hastings claimed the big prize by downing Frankston Bombers in the 2016 Nepean League Grand Final on Saturday. Pictures: Andrew Hurst

other team”. Usually conservative about his beloved Blues, Miles said pre-game that his team was a “certainty” to win the 2016 premiership. The coach too said he preferred the road that his side took to the big dance. Brendan Dunne said for his team, the continuity of playing together, building rapport, extending mateship and gaining confidence by winning big games was the “ideal preparation” for his group. After the Preliminary Final, Dunne was the first to say that his team “pulled up really well” and was still fresh in the lead-up to the Grand Final. There was no evidence to suggest otherwise on Saturday. Right to the final siren, the Blues were running everywhere on ground – no doubt the adrenalin kicked in the closer they got to the ultimate prize. History shows premierships are won by teams who have more contributors all over the ground. Hastings isn’t and doesn’t claim to be flashy – the Blues are structured, disciplined and defend better than any other team. Paul Rogasch is the best player in the Nepean League – it’s not the first time I have said this. Any doubters were proved horribly wrong

on Saturday. The Hastings premiership captain dominated the Bombers across half-back, had more than 30 possessions and took more than 20 marks. There was little question who the best player on the ground was. The Bombers brains trust failed to get it right against Rogasch. Why would you leave the best player in the comp alone for the majority of the match without an opponent? Rogasch would be the first to tell you that his job is made easier due to the support he has around him. Dunne himself had an outstanding finals series – the great players and leaders stand up when it matters. Terry Green, Jay Austerberry, Lance Brouwer and Andrew Booth are also unheralded. They are a significant part of the back six and have rarely been beaten at any time throughout the finals. Jake Hewitt was the biggest improver at Hastings this season – he is only going to get better. In the ruck, Josh Mulheron and Josh Ward dominated in that area. Even when ‘Mully’ left the ground for a well-earned spell after blitzing his opponents, Ward continued the domination, both in the air and having an impact at ground level.

At ground level, the Blues had more depth in that area. The likes of Peter Mawson, David Hull, Scott Jansen, Mark Deveraux and Nathan Gray won the points against their more highly-fancied Frankston opponents. Luke Clark was a trump card and repaid the faith that the Blues had in him. Luke Smith was the same – his finals series proved what a quality player he is. Matt Clifford and Shaun Foster would have to be among the best recruits any club has picked up. They are versatile, skilled, tough and smart footballers who make the right decisions at the right time. They are wonderful people to boot. The Hastings’ forward line was always going to be a handful for Frankston. Luke Hewitt, Col McVeigh, Dale Alanis and Steve Robb looked mighty dangerous whenever the footy went in there. Draw comparisons all over the ground and Hastings came out on top. It was a memorable Premiership in a memorable season. And only one club will be remembered as a champion team: Hastings Football Club, 2016 Nepean Division Premiers. Frankston Times 12 September 2016

Redlegs advance to Grand Final PENINSULA LEAGUE

By Toe Punt MT ELIZA will play Frankston YCW in the 2016 Peninsula Division Grand Final after thrashing Pines in Sunday’s Preliminary Final at Frankston Park. The Redlegs had a staggering 40 scoring shots to 11 for the match and recorded an 18.22 (130) to 6.5 (41) victory. All the damage was done in the first quarter for Pines, the favourites booting six first quarter goals to lead by 45 points at the first break. Jordan Capkin was again sensational for the Redlegs, booting four first quarter goals. Justin Van Unen was reasonably well held but still managed to finish with three goals.

The difference between the sides was unquestionably leg speed. When the ball hit the deck, the Redlegs made its opponent look as though they were running on the spot. Ben Landry and Rohan Heasley dominated through the middle of the ground, along with Jimmy Clayton while Karl Lobardozzi and Sam Gill provided enormous drive. Jay Neratzoglou and Jimmy Anwyl both had tough tasks on the rotating Pines key forwards and did outstanding jobs. In attack, Mt Eliza had movement everywhere. While Capkin and Van Unen were the key targets, Robbie Turnbull shone. Turnball booted a couple of goals in the third quarter but had a hand in many others. He is an outstanding talent. Young ruckman Matt Lillie was the best big

man on the ground, providing first use and even moved forward to kick a couple of majors. Matty Davis is an important player for the Redlegs and his return to the team made a significant difference to the Redlegs’ structures and versatility. Unfortunately for the winners, Darren Booth reinjured himself at training during the week in his bid to prove his fitness. Brodie Shaw went toe to toe with Pines’ Luke Holdcroft a couple of times but had the last laugh when he nailed a goal in the final quarter. Pines didn’t have too many winners. Even the Pines’ runner was yellow carded in the opening quarter. Guy Hendry worked hard in the forward half of the ground, Brad Kiely was outstanding and Tim

Bongetti worked tirelessly whether in the ruck or in the forward half. Adam Maling also did a good job on Van Unen. The Grand Final should be a ripper. Mt Eliza and Frankston YCW booted 18 goals each in the second semi-final two weeks ago and the lead changed hands four times in the last quarter. YC led by as much as six goals early in the second quarter. The Stonecats are deserved favourites while Mt Eliza is looking strong going into the grand final this Sunday at Frankston Park. The Redlegs simply must get into the game early. If they get blown away again, they can’t win it.

History for Heart, titles for Mornington, Skye SOCCER

By Craig MacKenzie THREE local champions and four local clubs promoted – it doesn’t get much better than that. The relegation of Frankston Pines was the only disappointing aspect to a spectacular season of achievement in local soccer. Scott Morrison’s Rosebud Heart entered the record books by winning every league game in 2016, finishing with 18 wins, 76 goals for and 11 against. In just its second year Heart joins 2014 juggernaut Eltham Redbacks as the only Victorian senior teams in over 50 years to boast a perfect record in a season. You have to go back to the Coburg United outfit of 1962 for the next senior team to achieve such a feat. Baxter added an exclamation mark to a successful local season finishing runner-up to Heart in State 5 South and also gaining promotion. Mornington, Skye United and Heart now go on to contest State League finals in their respective leagues to decide Victoria’s State 1, State 4 and State 5 champion teams for 2016. Adam Jamieson’s Mornington won that honour last year after clinching its inaugural State 1 championship before defeating State 1 North-West champion Western Suburbs 1-0 after extra time. Mornington had clinched this year’s State 1 South-East title with a 2-1 win against Mooroolbark last Tuesday night so Saturday’s final league game against one-time title challenger Malvern City at Dallas Brooks Park meant nothing and that’s exactly what the home side got out of it going down 3-1. Jamieson protected star players Grant Smart and Wayne Gordon by substituting them early in the second half shortly after Michael Freeman caught out Malvern on the break in the 54th minute to raise the volume of the old players’ reunion taking place under a marquee set up close to the pitch. But midfield maestro Pablo Caceres produced a second-half masterclass that included a stunning 25-metre free kick and a first-time sidefoot finish after substitute Jordan Templin had turned the home defence inside out. The gifted Caceres also had a part in Max McArthur’s goal linking up in a superb interpassing combination that presented McArthur with an easy near post finish past helpless Mornington keeper Kris McEvoy. Langwarrin and Casey Comets had to settle for a 1-1 draw in Saturday’s State 1 South-East derby at Lawton Park. After a scoreless first half the second stanza started with some great chances to both sides and eventually led to Nabil Mozaffaruddin scoring with a low drive in the 65th minute after some great lead-up work by Nick Thorogood. Langy was still celebrating when Casey equalised two minutes later through a strike from midfielder Adam Dunsford that passed through a crowded penalty area and left the unsighted Langy keeper Robbie Acs flat footed. While the home side had created the better chances in the first period it was fortunate to escape with a share of the spoils after Casey dominated for long periods in the second half. Despite finishing last in State 1 South-East Frankston Pines ended the season on a positive note with a 2-1 away win over South Springvale last Saturday. Kane Bentley opened the scoring in the 35th minute after a quick free-kick from Jordan Avraham but two minutes from the interval Matty Kalagianis replied for the home team. The decisive moment came in the 82nd minute when CJ Hodgson played a one-two then had his first attempt parried by the South Springvale keeper but was able to hammer home the rebound. Pines senior coach Billy Rae has put his hand up for the job next season and if re-appointed his first task will be to retain this year’s squad as some of his players have attracted the attention of local rivals. Harry McCartney reports that a fiery State 2 South-East derby at North Seaford Reserve on

Sunday 6 November 2016

Great Scott: Rosebud Heart senior coach Scott Morrison.

Saturday ended with Peninsula Strikers being swept away by an eight-goal tsunami that firmly established Seaford United’s dominance over its local rival. Seaford’s goals came from top scorer Dylan Waugh (3), Josh Tsung (2), Mitch Landon (2) and an own goal by Connor Zyskowski. There were four send-offs in the reserves and three in the seniors with the red mist in the big show descending on Strikers pair Trevor Johnson and Matt Morris-Thomas while Seaford’s Li Nam Wang also made an early exit. Both teams vie for the annual Steve Taylor Memorial Shield on which Seaford placed a firm grip this season with an aggregate scoreline of 14-3. Billy Armour’s Skye United had celebrated success two Saturdays ago and as players, club officials and supporters mingled in the middle of Coomoora Reserve after beating secondplaced Keysborough 2-0 eyes were raised to the heavens in recognition of the much loved Chris Attard who died in July. The title was a fitting tribute to a man who had given the club and the sport so much. Skye finished the State 4 South league season with a 1-1 home draw against Endeavour Hills Fire last Saturday. It now gears up for a cut-throat semi against Brandon Park, a contest that pits Armour against his close friend Stan Webster in what seems certain to be a fiercely contested affair. NEXT SATURDAY’S FINALS: State 1 final: Mornington v Altona Magic, 3pm, Jack Edwards Reserve. State 4 semi-final: Skye Utd v Brandon Park, 2.30pm, Knox Regional Centre. State 5 semi-final: Rosebud Heart v Healesville, 12 noon, Skye Recreational Reserve.
