A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL What an incredible year at FRA! We’ve just wrapped up a remarkable year on campus, culminating with the graduation of our senior class on “The Hill.” I had the honor of commending our seniors for the vibrant culture they’ve helped cultivate at FRA. The successes we’ve seen in our classrooms, on our teams, in our performances, and on our fields are a testament to their enthusiasm, intellect, athleticism, stage presence, work ethic, creativity, kindness, and humor.

Throughout the fall, during my lunches with seniors, I was consistently impressed by their genuine desire to lead. They led by example—competing with excellence, delivering memorable performances, and embracing moments of triumph. Even with the challenges posed by a major construction project at the heart of campus, they chose to lead with joy and optimism, setting a tone that lifted our entire community. At FRA, it’s our students who truly shape the culture of our campus.

I remain deeply appreciative of the strong bonds that form as students grow up together at FRA. As our seniors graduate, I’m reminded that this will always be their school. In this issue of the 4700 Magazine, I hope you feel the strength of the culture that runs throughout our community—from our youngest learners in Pre-K3 to our graduating seniors, and from alumni to parents. It’s something truly special.

As you explore this edition, I hope you share in my excitement and pride for all that’s happening at FRA and all that lies ahead. My family continues to be richly blessed by this incredible FRAmily.

JAZ BOON Jaz Boon is a former Assistant General Counsel at Bridgestone Americas, where he advised on environmental, health and safety, and sustainability matters. He previously practiced complex commercial litigation at Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis and began his legal career as a law clerk to the Honorable Richard H. Dinkins of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. In 2024, Jaz was named a Nashville Bar Association Fellow. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Urban Green Lab, the Advisory Board for Belmont University College of Law, and is a member and Past Chair of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Environmental Law Section.

Jaz and his wife, Anna, have lived in Nashville for over 20 years. Originally from Ohio and Minnesota, they joined the FRA community nearly four years ago. Their daughters, Georgette and Willa, are in the 3rd and 1st grades. Jaz currently serves on the Advancement Committee.

GINA LATENDRESSE Gina Latendresse is President of American Pearl Company, a global pearl business she has led since 1991. Raised in the industry by her father, the late John R. Latendresse—widely recognized as the “Father of American Pearls”— Gina has been immersed in gemology from a young age. She holds a BA in Psychology from Rhodes College and is a certified Graduate Gemologist and jeweler through the Gemological Institute of America. From 1995 to 2021, she served on committees and the Board of Directors of the American Gem Trade Association, helping uphold ethical and sustainable practices in the jewelry industry.

Gina and her husband, Devin LaFaye, are parents to Sabrina, FRA Class of 2019. Gina currently serves on the Master Plan Committee.

SHAKA MITCHELL Shaka Mitchell is a Senior Fellow at the American Federation for Children and a national leader in education reform and school choice advocacy. He previously chaired the Tennessee State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and is a Fellow of the Civil Society Fellowship, a partnership of ADL and The Aspen Institute. He is also a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network and the creator and host of the Come Together Music Project and Podcast, which uses music to foster dialogue across political and social divides.

Shaka and his wife, Stephanie, are active members of Edgefield Church in Nashville and are involved with local nonprofits including Young Life and Young Lives. Their daughters—Emma Ruth (9th grade), Hadassah (6th grade), and Vera (4th grade)—attend FRA. Shaka currently serves on the Strategic Vision Committee.

WILL TRAPP Will Trapp is a Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley, where he has worked in the investment industry since 2009. He holds a degree from Birmingham-Southern College and an MBA from Vanderbilt University. Will also serves on the Board of Trustees for the University of North Alabama and is a member of the Investment Committee for the PCA Foundation.

Will and his wife, Julie, have three children. Their daughters Annie (‘24) and Grace (10th grade) have been part of the FRA community since 2020. Their son, Reed, is currently attending Auburn University. FRA holds a special place in Will’s family history—his mother, Gail, began her career as a Latin teacher at FRA in 1973. Will currently serves on the Master Plan Committee.

JASON ZACHARIAH Jason Zachariah is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Lifepoint Health, a national healthcare system serving over 2 million patients annually. He joined Lifepoint in 2022 and led its successful merger with Kindred Healthcare, where he previously served as President and COO. Jason began his healthcare career at Kindred in 2006 and held earlier roles in the pharmaceutical industry with Abbott Laboratories and GSK. He holds a BS in biology from Duke University, an MS in Biotechnology from Northwestern University, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management.

Jason and his wife, Laura, joined the FRA community in 2022 when their son, Ean, entered 10th grade and their daughter, Lilly, entered 4th grade. Ean is graduating this year, and Lilly will begin 7th grade in the fall. The Zachariah's are active members of the FRA community, with Jason currently serving on the Advancement Committee.

Before I begin, I want to take a moment to say thank you. First—to the scholar-athlete who just introduced me. Ean, you were my introduction to FRA. And over these last two years, it has been a true gift to walk alongside you. I’ve watched you grow—not just as a standout student or athlete, but as a servant leader and a person of deep character. Your drive, your empathy, and your ability to lead with both strength and heart have left a lasting mark—not just on me, but on this entire community.

F

rom my first day of kindergarten to the final weeks before graduation, Franklin Road Academy has been the place where I’ve grown academically, spiritually, and personally. Over the years, FRA

has not only molded who I am, but it has given me the tools to take on the next chapter of life with confidence, curiosity, and purpose.

Being part of a “FRAmily” legacy at FRA has made the experience even more special. My brother graduated before me, and my sister will follow in three years. This school has been a part of our lives for more than a decade, and we’ve each been influenced by the values, people, and community that make FRA so unique.

One of the most defining aspects of my experience here has been the academic rigor. FRA challenges its students to think critically, write clearly, and engage deeply with every subject. The curriculum is designed not just to help us succeed in high school, but to prepare us fully for the demands of college and beyond. Whether it was advanced math, challenging literature discussions, or in-depth science labs, I’ve always felt pushed to reach higher.

What makes that possible is the teachers. FRA is filled with educators who are passionate about what they teach and deeply invested in the success of every student. Teachers like Mrs. Gardner showed me that diligence and consistency in the classroom pay off, not just in grades, but in personal growth.

Others, like Mr. Gilroy through Future Business Leaders of America, helped me develop leadership and communication skills that will be invaluable in college and in life. Across every subject and every grade, the teachers at FRA do more than deliver content, they build relationships, inspire curiosity, and help us become the best version of ourselves.

But what truly sets FRA apart is its foundation in faith. Here, we’re not only encouraged to grow in knowledge, but also in character. Chapel services and religion classes have helped me develop a deeper understanding of my faith and how it connects to every part of my life. FRA doesn’t just prepare students academically, it helps us anchor our identity in something greater than ourselves. We’re taught to live with integrity, serve others, and lead with purpose, all grounded in a Christian worldview.

Looking back, I see how every part of this experience, from the classroom to the chapel, has played a role in preparing me for the future. FRA has challenged me, supported me, and helped me grow in ways I never expected. I leave here not only with knowledge in my mind, but truth in my heart and purpose in my steps.

As I graduate this year, I’m incredibly thankful for the teachers who poured into me, the faith that shaped me, and the school that became my second home.

Franklin Road Academy has given me an amazing foundation for life, and I’ll carry it with me wherever I go.

Alongside the Founders and Bradshaw Awards, these honors are among the highest

distinctions a student can receive at FRA. This year’s recipients, Dylan Anderson and Parker Finnegan, have each left a lasting impact on our community through their character, service, and leadership—both inside and outside the classroom.

Parker, a multi-sport athlete and class officer, is known for his determination, adaptability, and academic excellence. Dylan, a gifted actress and musician, is a vibrant presence on the worship team, volleyball court, and within YoungLife.

Though their paths are different, they are united by their shared humility, positivity, and commitment to others. Thriving Toward Independence FRA’s Postsecondary Program Empowers Young Adults with Intellectual Disabilities

For many young adults with intellectual disabilities, the transition from high school to adulthood can be one of the most uncertain and challenging times in their lives. Franklin Road Academy’s THRIVE program steps into that gap with purpose, structure, and compassion. Designed for students ages 18 to 21 who have completed high school, THRIVE offers a postsecondary experience that helps participants grow in confidence, independence, and readiness for the next chapter of life.

hen we first launched the entrepreneurial leadership program in FRA’s Upper School, we had a vision: to cultivate problem-

solvers, creative thinkers, and responsible leaders. What we didn’t realize then was just how quickly that vision would ripple down into every corner of our campus, especially into the hearts and imaginations of our youngest learners.

Today, that same entrepreneurial spirit is alive and thriving in FRA’s Lower School, where classroom experiences like the Pre-K Café and 3rd Grade Business Expo are sparking innovation and planting seeds of purpose. As the Director of Entrepreneurial Leadership, it’s been one of the most joyful surprises of this program’s evolution, watching students as young as three years old step into roles that help them see themselves not just as learners, but as makers, doers, and givers.

BIG IDEAS, LITTLE LEADERS: THE 3RD GRADE BUSINESS EXPO Long before the entrepreneurship program formally took root, those same ideas were already coming to life in third grade. The 3rd Grade Business Expo, led by teacher Ashlyn Bufton, is a culminating project that blends economics, financial literacy, marketing, and philanthropy—all through the lens of student-created businesses.

Each spring, students begin by studying core economic principles, from supply and demand to saving and spending. Then they apply that knowledge to real businesses they dream up themselves. After submitting proposals and going through a financial planning process, students work at home to create products and advertising campaigns— including storefronts, commercial videos, and visual ad boards.

What’s truly remarkable is how much these students grow throughout the process.

“They learn how to adjust their ideas to reduce competition, how to price items, how to market creatively, and how to count and manage their money,” Ashlyn said. “And they love it.”

But perhaps the most powerful moment of this year came after the booths were packed up and the products sold. The students gathered to learn just how much they had raised for their charitable partner, Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.

The total? $6,250—the largest donation in program history.

“Their joy was contagious,” Ashlyn recalled.

“Knowing they gave back in such a meaningful way, it’s something they’ll carry with them for a long time.”

THE POWER OF PATHWAYS AND PARTNERSHIPS What makes both of these experiences even more meaningful is the connection they share with our Upper School entrepreneurs. As part of a growing tradition of cross-divisional collaboration, Upper School students mentor the third graders, helping them brainstorm product ideas, develop commercials, and refine their pitches. It’s mentorship in action, big kids inspiring younger ones, and younger students seeing their older peers as role models.

This collaboration does more than reinforce skills; it builds community. It teaches our students that leadership isn’t about doing it alone—it’s about guiding, lifting, and learning together.

I often say that entrepreneurship is more than starting a business—it’s a mindset.

A way of seeing the world with curiosity, compassion, and confidence. Through programs like the Pre-K Café and the 3rd Grade Business Expo, we’re giving our students a foundation of skills and habits they will use for a lifetime: creativity, resilience, communication, innovation.

What excites me most is imagining the journey ahead. I see students walking into Upper School already equipped with the instincts and insights of seasoned entrepreneurs. And I know their story started not in a boardroom or a business class—but in a play café and a colorful expo booth.

At FRA, we are not just teaching students to dream. We’re giving them the tools— and the courage—to build those dreams from the ground up.

EMBRACING THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS IN A COUNTER-CULTURAL WAY

BY BRANDON ALBRIGHT, Director of Spiritual Life

“WHY DOES YOUR TEACHER EAT WITH TAX COLLECTORS AND SINNERS?” That was just one of the many questions Jesus received throughout His ministry. Do you know who you’re with right now? Do you know what they’ve done?

People constantly questioned His actions, His motives, and His words. Why? Because they

were upside down. His way looked different from the world’s way. His teachings and actions seemed out of the ordinary—outrageous, even. They were counter-cultural, backward by

society’s standards. Jesus flipped the social structures and expectations of His day on their head, and in doing so, revealed a new way to live: the Upside Down Life.

Throughout this year, we explored what that meant by looking at the life and message of

Jesus—how He didn’t just teach differently but lived differently, and how He invites us to do the same. During Spiritual Emphasis Week, we dove deeper into this theme with our guest

speaker, Pastor Chris Sherrod. Chris is the uncle of FRA’s own Becky Knight and serves as the Marriage and Family Director at Watermark Community Church in Dallas, Texas. He has spent his life ministering to students, adults, and families as a pastor, teacher, youth leader, and

camp director, and he came to help us reflect on the upside-down teachings of Jesus through three of His parables.

When we recognize the holiness of God, we see both our desperate need for His grace and the depth of His love.

In the Upside Down Life, our value doesn’t come from performance or comparison but from the unshakable truth of who God is and how deeply He loves us.

In Luke 15:11–32, the Parable of the Prodigal Son, Chris taught how both brothers misunderstood their father’s love. The younger believed he was too far gone to be loved. The older believed he had earned it. But the father runs toward the repentant son and invites both into relationship—not because of what they’ve done, but because of who they are. Tim Keller beautifully summarizes it:

A MISSION TRIP THAT CHANGED THE GAME

BY ANNA PARDOE, Communications Coordinator Interim Week offers students the opportunity to explore learning beyond the classroom walls — and this year, the varsity boys soccer team took that mission to heart, and to Honduras.

What began as a simple idea, combining service with sport, grew into something much more powerful. Head Coach Ryan McDonald and Assistant Coach Shelton Wicks led a group of soccer players to Honduras in partnership with Hearts2Honduras, a nonprofit that has been changing lives since its founding in 2010.

Shelton Wicks, who co-founded the organization alongside his mother, explained how it all began. “It wasn’t even supposed to be a nonprofit,” he shared. “We helped a friend go serve abroad, and when we came back from that first trip to an orphanage, we realized the kids needed help staying in school. That’s when it started growing — people wanted to get involved, to help, and eventually, it just took off.”

This year’s trip saw the team serve in orphanages, distribute food at hospitals, and train and compete with local club and professional soccer teams — all in a single week. But soccer was never the point; it was a bridge.

“The guys played in tournaments on small fenced-in courts with concrete walls. It was fast, intense, and eye-opening,” Coach Ryan McDonald said. “But after long days of service, they still had the energy to play, to connect. It was beautiful.”

The group also spent time serving meals they had prepared themselves — over 100 traditional Honduran baleadas — at a local hospital. One moment stood out to Wicks: “Justice, one of our players, looked at me when we walked in and said, ‘I don’t know how we’re going to do this… we don’t have enough for everyone.’

And I had to tell him, ‘Yeah, man, sometimes that’s just how it is. You do your best.’ That was a big moment for him.”

Some are doing their classes on their phones. Imagine what a laptop could do for their educational journey.”

D.W. Gregory’s powerful and poignant play Radium Girls resonates

deeply with contemporary concerns about corporate responsibility, worker safety, media grandstanding, and the enduring fight for justice.

Radium Girls transports us to the early 20th century—a time of rapid industrial growth and scientific discovery. The seemingly miraculous glow of radium, a newly discovered element, fueled a booming

industry, particularly in the production of luminous watch dials and

even so-called health supplements. However, the women employed

to paint these dials—the “radium girls”—were unknowingly exposed to a deadly poison.

Gregory’s script incorporates a dynamic blend of realism and

theatricality. Its fast-paced, episodic structure shifts seamlessly

between scenes of domestic life, corporate offices, and courtroom

drama. This format allows the audience to experience the unfolding

tragedy from multiple angles and underscores the systemic nature of the injustice.

Our students embraced this challenging material with maturity, creativity, and heart. From emotionally charged performances

to impactful technical work behind the scenes, this production

showcased the depth of talent and commitment within our upper

school community. The success of Radium Girls was not only seen

in the standing ovations and sold-out shows, but in the meaningful conversations it sparked about history, ethics, and advocacy.

It has been a privilege to watch our students bring this important story to life—and to do so with such conviction and care.

SARAH JACKSON-ZANOTTI I will never forget the first time I saw Mary Poppins: The Broadway Musical with my family in Cleveland, Ohio. The music and original movie were already beloved in our home, but the stage production brought a whole new kind of magic. I was on the edge of my seat the entire show—and yes, Mary Poppins flew —but the most unforgettable part was experiencing it with my grandmother by my side. I was in 8th grade, and that night remains one of my most treasured memories. It also sparked an artistic fire in me that still burns today. Naturally, this was a show I always dreamed of working on, and I’m incredibly thankful to Ms. Clark, Dr. Cindy Thornton, FOTA, and our amazing students for helping bring that dream to life.

There are so many lessons woven into this joyful and familiar musical. In “Feed the Birds,” we learn to see beyond appearances.

“Precision and Order” challenges us to reevaluate what truly matters in life. And in “Spoonful of Sugar,” Mary teaches us how to meet life’s challenges with grace and kindness. These moments, and so many more, became springboards for meaningful reflection throughout our rehearsal process.

But what surprised me most—and touched me deepest—was the way this story highlights the heart of family. As Winifred says, “We will have what really matters—the children and each other.” It’s a story about facing challenges together and growing stronger as a result.

That’s what made it the perfect story for FRA, because this place truly is a FRAmily. It’s a community that supports, uplifts, and grows together.

The students brought such heart, energy, and dedication to this production, and it showed in every performance. From powerful solos to carefully choreographed chimney sweeps, their hard work and joy lit up the stage. The success of Mary Poppins Jr. was not only measured in applause, but in the memories made, the lessons learned, and the pride we all felt watching our middle schoolers shine.

THE ART OF DUALITY AND DEVOTION Todd Greene, a 1987 graduate of Franklin Road Academy, has built an artistic career that defies simple categorization. A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (BFA, 1992), Greene is a painter, illustrator, sculptor, and mixed media artist whose work explores the complexities of paradox, spirituality, and the human condition. From his home base in Nashville, he creates pieces that invite reflection and dialogue—often blending classical technique with contemporary concept.

Greene’s creative range is impressive. His portfolio includes works in acrylic, oil, sculpture, and unique constructions that blur the boundaries between disciplines. His commitment to thoughtful expression has earned him national recognition, including features in Time magazine and a place in the permanent collection of the Tennessee State Museum, which holds seven of his pieces.

Throughout his career, Greene has exhibited extensively in both solo and group settings, bringing his vision to audiences across the country. He has also contributed to the artistic community as an educator, teaching drawing and painting at Watkins College of Art & Design and Ravenwood High School, nurturing the next generation of creatives.

Despite his professional success, Greene’s connection to FRA remains strong. His wife, Rusti Meng (FRA Class of 1988), shares the school legacy, and their son, Mills, is now forging his own path as a current FRA freshman involved in both baseball and the arts. For Greene, it’s a full-circle moment—blending past, present, and future in a way that echoes the very themes his artwork often explores.

For alumnus Eric Diggs, those seeds took root early—growing into a bold vision that would ultimately reshape how young Christians gather and connect.

Building a Christian Entertainment Empire in the heart of Nashville When Eric Diggs first stepped onto the Franklin Road Academy campus as a sixth grader, no one could have predicted the entrepreneurial path that would unfold before him. Today, as the CEO of The Cove Nashville—a rapidly growing Christian entertainment company— Eric is revolutionizing how young Christians connect, socialize, and experience their faith.

Eric's time at FRA was marked by remarkable balance and achievement across multiple domains. Spiritually, he took on leadership roles as FCA President and served as a chaplain during his high school years. Academically, he thrived in the Math, Science, and Literature programs, taking advantage of numerous AP courses that would later enable him to graduate a semester early from Cornell University. Athletically, Eric focused primarily on football and track, though he also played basketball briefly and joined the choir in his senior year, participating in the school's Cocoa and Carols tradition. Athletic Director, Kris Palmerton said, "Discipline builds champions—on the field, in the classroom, and in life. Eric Diggs proves that greatness comes from showing up, working harder, and never settling."

The relationships Eric built at FRA proved invaluable to his development. He formed strong connections with several teachers and coaches, including Coach David Tucker, Coach Adrian Frederick, Upper School Head Jay Salato, and Mr. Clif Kaiser. His circle of friends—Watson Tansil, Matthew Dalton, Lance Wilhoite, Drake and Tymon Mitchell, and his late friend Brogan Wilson—made his FRA experience particularly memorable.

The academic rigor at FRA prepared Eric exceptionally well for Cornell University, where he pursued a degree in Finance while balancing the demands of being a collegiate athlete. The AP credits he earned at FRA allowed him to graduate a semester early, demonstrating the strength of his academic foundation.

Years after Eric had graduated high school, Joe Maxwell—his former host parent and member of the FRA Board—reached out to Eric's father with a special connection in mind. Maxwell introduced Eric to Chris Black, the current CEO and President of Thread Bank, where Maxwell serves as Chairman of the Board. Black, also a Cornell alumnus, offered Eric an internship that eventually led to a full-time position following the completion of his football career.

The concept for The Cove Nashville—a Christian entertainment company specializing in content creation, Christian music, and non-alcoholic live events for Gen Z and young millennials—officially took root in July 2023. However, the underlying motivation had been building within Eric for years.

As her love for French was blossoming, Alex discovered another passion at FRA— jazz guitar. Introduced to the instrument by band director Bob Chandler, she quickly demonstrated a natural ability for music.

FRA's rigorous academic environment prepared Alex for her collegiate journey.

She was able to test out of foreign language requirements in college (though she still enrolled in French classes) and placed into junior-level calculus, thanks to her math teacher Ed Zaborowski. This advanced standing gave her flexibility to choose classes that aligned with her interests, with many core requirements already fulfilled.

Before college, Brito participated in a Vanderbilt summer program that further sparked her interest in language and neuroscience. While at the University of Tennessee, she combined French and neuroscience for her honors degree. This fascination led her to neurolinguistics research with Professor Harriet Bowden, using EEG to study brain activity while processing languages like Latin, Spanish, and eventually French for her thesis. As president of the French Honor Society, Brito recruited students to participate in her EEG study on language acquisition differences.

Following a clinical trials internship at Duke, Brito entered Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for graduate school.

Despite her clear interest in neurology, she remained open to learning everything she could during rotations and in class to explore what else might capture her interest.

He helped throughout campus daily, set up for game days, and even coached a middle school basketball team. He is now heading to Purdue University this summer to work in the Purdue Club, which deals with fundraising and development.
