Our record-setting capital campaign, exceeding $70 million, stands as a powerful testament to what happens when a community believes boldly in its mission. The new upper school building and Bracken Green are not just facilities; they are catalysts for curiosity, collaboration, and the kind of learning that shapes lives. Our students continue to bring our mission to life in remarkable ways. The school year got off to a rousing start with the lower school ice cream social, Meet in the Middle for middle school students, and the upper school retreat at Jonathan Creek, Kentucky. The first day of class was marked by excitement for the year ahead and abundant high-fives from Prince the Panther. Campus traditions resumed with activities including the Panther Walk. Lower school students tried out the new play structure.

Faith, service, community, and entrepreneurship are synonymous with an FRA education. The fall semester brought traditions including Service Saturday, See You at the Pole, and a celebration of Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Fourth grade entrepreneurs sold flowers and upper school entrepreneurial leadership students were matched with mentors who will help guide their projects throughout the year. Seniors took a trip to Plaza Mariachi, a Nashville cultural hub, during Hispanic Heritage Month.

With the theme of “Live from Music City,” Homecoming 2025 ratcheted up the school spirit for an entire week. Beloved traditions included seniors painting the hill and greeting the community at the School entrance, the pep rally, the parade, a Panther Walk honoring faculty, and delightful Nashville-themed costumes for spirit days.

The fall season brought opportunities to strengthen bonds inside and outside the FRA community. The All-Community Tailgate was a massive pride-building event, and the annual NFL Legends Combine gave more than 100 Middle Tennessee students a taste of combine-style drills and skill tests. FRAllege Gameday blended school spirit and broadcast training for students. FRAll Festival brought a carnival atmosphere to the Bracken Green. Panther Pals created connections between upper and middle school students, and their lower school peers. October’s Pre-K Field Day and November’s Pre-K Thanksgiving Feast yielded a bounty of smiles. In typical FRA fashion, the entire school got into the Christmas spirit with themed dress-up days.

ACADEMICS AI CERTIFICATION, NATIONAL MERIT, AP SCORES

FRA Awarded Certification for Responsible AI in Learning

Franklin Road Academy has earned the Responsible AI in Learning (RAIL) endorsement from the Middle States Association. The RAIL endorsement in AI literacy, safety, and ethics is a testament to FRA’s commitment to responsibly embracing AI in support of its educational mission. FRA is the first school in Tennessee and one of only 60 schools and school systems in the world to obtain this certification. RAIL is the world’s only comprehensive implementation framework for AI in K-12 schools and systems. This twoyear certification recognizes schools that have demonstrated leadership in navigating the opportunities and challenges of AI in education. It signifies that the school has completed a rigorous implementation process grounded in AI literacy, ethics, and institutional readiness. “We acknowledge that our students will operate in a world in which this technology exists, and it is our responsibility to prepare students to engage thoughtfully with these tools,” says Meaghan Williams, director of studies at FRA. “The RAIL certification emphasizes a mission-centered approach, which for us means ensuring equitable access, preventing bias, and promoting ethical use of AI in alignment with our values of integrity, purpose and compassion.” With guidance from the Middle States Association, FRA has created actionable documents and embedded AI into its broader strategic vision, earning a credential that reflects both readiness and responsibility in the age of AI. Through the RAIL program, the School has: • Gained institutional expertise in AI literacy, critical evaluation, and responsible implementation. • Developed mission-aligned policies to ensure safe, ethical, and effective use of AI tools. • Participated in ongoing professional development and collaborative peer learning. • Engaged in strategic planning to balance innovation with risk mitigation. • Aligned its practices with a recognized implementation framework for long-term success.

Five FRA Students Receive National Merit Recognition Five Franklin Road Academy seniors received recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program. Garrett Lee, Weston Marwill, and Kinsley Moulds have been named semifinalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are among the 16,000 highest scorers out of 1.3 million students who took the Preliminary SAT, which is also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Jack Davis and Emma Hale have been recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars. They are among the top 1% of more than 1.3 million students who took the Preliminary SAT in the fall of 2024. In the spring, Garrett, Weston, and Kinsley will have the opportunity to compete for nearly 7,000 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $25 million.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level. About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. The 2026 scholarship recipients will be announced in four nationwide news releases starting in April and concluding in July. The mission of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation is to recognize and honor academically talented students across the United States. The goals of its scholarship program are: to promote a wider and deeper respect for learning, to honor exceptionally talented individuals, and to encourage the pursuit of academic excellence at all levels of education.

Business Legends Share Leadership Wisdom at Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Showcase Those who attended a celebration of Franklin Road Academy’s new Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership in September were delighted by the impressive facilities and inspired by the wisdom of two Nashville business luminaries. Cal Turner Jr., the former CEO of Dollar General, and Joe Scarlett, the former president of Tractor Supply Company, joined FRA head of school Sean Casey for a conversation about leadership that drew on decades of hard-earned lessons and insights. Turner and Scarlett headlined the event, which featured remarks from Stacey Banks-Houston, FRA’s director of entrepreneurial leadership, and Adrienne Richardson, a former FRA parent who has served as a mentor to entrepreneurship students. The audience included entrepreneurship students, who showcased their business concepts to visitors earlier in the evening, and outside mentors, who have helped students hone and refine their pitches. With Nashville’s picturesque green hills visible from the presentation classroom’s soaring windows, Turner and Scarlett reflected on their values, victories, and setbacks in business.

Scarlett spent nearly three decades in leadership roles with Tractor Supply Company, including president and chairman. He said selecting smart and capable people is essential to the success of any chief executive. “You need to have some first-class people working for you and around you,” Scarlett said. “As I like to say, surround yourself with stars, you’re going to be a star. Surround yourself with turkeys and you’re going to get sliced up for Thanksgiving.” After college, Turner served for three years as an officer in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career at Dollar General, a business that was started by his father, Cal Turner Sr. Turner served as CEO for 37 years, and during his tenure, the number of Dollar General stores increased from 150, with annual sales of $40 million, to more than 6,000, with sales in excess of $6 billion. “If you develop a reputation for being a good listener, everyone will try to make what he or she says worth your while, and will present it in a meaningful way, and you will bond with each other,” Turner said.

Turner said his Christian faith was his North Star during his career, and it helped give him clarity when he was challenged as a leader. “When you have a tough decision, when you are in a real trauma, which you most likely will encounter, define to yourself who you are, and your primary value that motivates you,” Turner said. “I think everyone should know what is the one value that you won’t compromise because life plays out not in black versus white, but gray versus gray.” In 1982, Scarlett was instrumental in returning Tractor Supply Company to profitability. In 1994, he led the successful effort to take the company public. Tractor Supply Company was honored by Forbes as one of the “Best Managed Companies in America” and Scarlett was recognized as Ernst & Young’s Southeast Entrepreneur of the Year. He said a hallmark of any healthy large organization is that employees feel that they have agency. “As CEO, I made very few decisions,” Scarlett said. “I’m not kidding about that. I knew what was going on, but most decisions were made by key people. I made high-level personnel decisions and I made high-level strategic decisions, but for the most part, most of the decision-making was pushed down the ladder. Our philosophy throughout the organization was you empowered people to do that.” When Casey asked both men what advice they would give to their 15-year-old selves, Scarlett said to be more patient, while Turner said not to take himself so seriously. The new Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership will unquestionably serve as a launching pad for the dreams of future FRA students. Based on the advice they received from two Nashville business legends, current students may already have a head start.

FRA Expands AP Course Access, Sets School Record For Pass Rate In the course of one year, Franklin Road Academy increased the number of students taking Advanced Placement exams by 50 and set a school record with an overall pass rate of 89%. That means 89% of FRA students who took an AP exam in spring 2025 scored a 3, 4, or 5. The overall Tennessee statewide pass rate is 66%. AP courses allow students the opportunity to tackle college-level work while still in high school and earn college credit and placement. Students are responding to a larger number of AP course offerings, according to school administrators. Since 2020, FRA has added nine AP courses for a total of 29—ranging from computer science and calculus to psychology and world history. More students are not just sitting for the tests; however, they are excelling. Ninety-five-percent of FRA students passed at least one AP test, according to data released last summer by the College Board. “If a student wants to take an AP class, we support them,” says Betsey Bachert, director of college counseling and assistant head of the upper school. “Our teachers take pride in their pass rates, but not at the expense of gatekeeping.” Ultra-selective colleges expect applicants to take a rigorous academic courseload, including AP classes, Bachert says. Many other institutions give college credit for AP courses, which can save families money and accelerate a student’s path to graduation. AP course enrollment is also an accurate predictor of success in higher education. “If a student takes at least one AP course in high school, the chances that they will graduate from college in four years is significantly higher,” Bachert says. In the past five years, FRA has doubled the number of students taking AP courses to 264. In 2025, along with fewer students earning 1s and 2s on the tests, 59% earned 4s or 5s—that’s the highest percentage in school history. “It’s a joy to see our students show up on test day with confidence, ready to showcase all they’ve learned,” Bachert says. “They have complete trust that they’ve been well-prepared and really want to make their teachers proud.”

COMMITMENT TO SERVICE Turner Fellows Gain Real-World Experience, Contribute to Local Nonprofits

Sponsored by the Cal Turner Family Foundation, the Turner Fellows program empowers rising seniors to turn compassion into meaningful action. Selected through a competitive process, fellows exemplify integrity, balance, and a strong commitment to service. Each fellow partners with a Nashville nonprofit for a six-week paid internship, gaining real-world experience while making a lasting impact. Fellows are also eligible for a Turner Scholarship to the college of their choice, and each partner organization receives a financial gift in their honor. Since the inception of the program in 2003, more than 200 FRA students have participated. Franklin Road Academy unveiled its new 32,000-squarefoot upper school building and Bracken Green during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in August. The $29.5 million project transforms the student experience by creating a hub of academic innovation, as well as a town square gathering space for the entire school community. The two-story upper school building features state-of-the-art English, history, and entrepreneurial leadership classrooms, a cutting-edge digital media and broadcast studio, and common areas for studying, gathering and events. The 38,000-square-foot Bracken Green, which doubles the size of the previous quad, is a central locale for middle school and upper school students during the day and a venue for schoolwide community events, including graduation. “This is an incredibly exciting chapter in the history of our school,” said FRA head of school Sean Casey. “These new spaces will help inspire academic excellence, invite creativity and discovery, and encourage collaboration and innovation. This represents a significant investment in our students and our faculty. We are so grateful to our supporters who made this ambitious project a reality.”

The new spaces, including the Panther Den and Bradshaw Commons, will foster collaboration by providing areas where students gather for study sessions and group meetings. The new Counseling Center, located in the heart of the new upper school building, underscores the importance of student emotional health and wellness. The new building is also connected to the middle school and the Weicker Center for Student Life, seamlessly integrating the existing structures and allowing for students to easily move throughout the facilities.

Franklin Road Academy has created a road map for its next five years with the release of its 2030 strategic vision. The vision builds upon a decade of transformational growth, innovation, and mission clarity that has sparked an extraordinary sense of pride and investment among FRA’s stakeholders. The Academy has firmly positioned itself as a premier educational institution among independent schools in the region. FRA’s Approach to Innovation Builds Through Grade Levels By Adam Norris

The one constant about the process of innovating is that it never looks the same. It starts and stops and moves in different directions. It prompts questions and reveals new problems. It is neither linear, nor predictable. Scenes inside Franklin Road Academy’s three innovation labs offer glimpses of that process. Lower school students experimenting with coding for the first time. Middle school students designing and slicing a 3D print. Upper school students refining a robot. While innovation is expected in those areas, it is not restricted to them. “At FRA, innovation is more than a skill; it’s a mindset,” says Shannon Murphy, the K-12 department chair of computer science and innovation. “It’s the way we think, teach, and learn. It’s how we empower students to take risks, follow their passions, and imagine what’s next. Every day, our students learn to design, lead, and create a future they can envision.” In the lower school, students participate in weekly STEM and innovation classes starting in pre-K4. FRA first launched its lower school STEM lab more than two decades ago. Since that time, it has evolved with the introduction of new technologies and innovative approaches, allowing students to learn the basics of coding and other skills. Lower school also has an innovation lab, which is a space that is used for creation and lessons in entrepreneurship. “My goal is to help students become not just problem solvers, but problem finders—curious, resourceful thinkers who can imagine new possibilities and bring them to life,” says Angelica Marsh, lower school coordinator of math and innovation. “Whether they’re coding a game, building a prototype, or pitching a business idea, our students learn to connect technical skills with real-world impact.” Lower school students experiment with graphic design, broadcasting, and the basics of starting a business. Marsh leads a unit on video game-making for fourth graders. As digital natives, she says, lower school students are fast learners. “Our elementary students are incredibly tech-savvy,” Marsh says. “They can usually figure out a new application simply by diving in and experimenting.” Middle school students begin building foundational skills in a daily fifth-grade course called Digital Discoveries, as they develop digital literacy, 3D printing knowledge, and design capabilities. In grades 6-8, they take classes in digital design, computer coding, and Artificial Intelligence. All middle school students have their own laptop and Canva Pro account, which allows them to learn the basics of graphic design and digital content creation. “Middle school is such an important time to spark curiosity,” says Kelly Klingbeil, who teaches middle school technology and is a middle school robotics coach. “Giving students a chance to explore different technologies helps them see that innovation isn’t just for ‘tech experts’ — it’s for anyone who wants to solve problems and think creatively. These experiences help them build confidence, learn to collaborate, and realize they can use technology as a tool to bring their ideas to life.”

Middle school students have access to 3D printers, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, and a sticker printer, so they can produce what they design. With classroom sets of robots, students practice coding and executing robotics challenges such as navigating a maze, retrieving an object, or measuring distance. Klingbeil says the tools are important, but they don’t tell FRA’s full innovation story. “It’s not just about the space or the equipment,” Klingbeil says. “The School really encourages teachers to try new things and bring fresh ideas into the classroom, which keeps our students excited about learning and eager to create.” In the upper school, coursework continues to evolve to meet the readiness of students who have come from this intentional middle school foundation. Students now have access to AP Computer Science and engineering offerings, as well as a thriving digital media center. This facility was conceived in response to

student curiosity, teacher passion, and school-wide support. What began as a small creative outlet has evolved into a hub for design, storytelling, and production that reflects the innovation happening across campus. Matthew Bounds is in his first year at FRA. He previously spearheaded the creation of the AP Computer Science program at St. John’s School in Houston. At FRA, he teaches and writes curriculum for upper school computer science and innovation courses, coaches an upper school robotics team, and reviews and improves computer science and innovation curriculum for PK-12. “As educators we often talk about preparing students for the future and how the fundamentals are important, since we don’t know what new innovations will come next,” Bounds says. “Two of the most important skills are critical thinking and problemsolving. Lofty Ambitions Alumnus Cullen Douglass Creates a Magical Collection of Luxury Tree Houses on the Cumberland Plateau By Adam Norris One of the byproducts of the global pandemic was it pushed people outdoors. Franklin Road Academy alumnus Cullen Douglass ’83 felt the urge as well. He had always loved the mountains, while his wife, Kristen, preferred the beach. But when she told him that she was interested in some affordable tiny homes that had been recently built in Grundy County, Tennessee, he saw an opportunity to find the woodland retreat he had coveted. Douglass wasn’t crazy about the design of the tiny homes, so he kept searching for property on the Cumberland Plateau. He landed on Beersheba Springs, TN. Population 400. About 90 minutes southeast of Nashville. He bought five acres. Although he had worked as a financial planner in Nashville for more than three decades, he also had a degree in building construction from Auburn University’s School of Architecture. Serving as the general contractor, he worked with an architect and put together a team to build his family a vacation home, fulfilling a long-term goal to be a developer. The end result was a property known as Top of the Rock, a four-bedroom house perched nearly 2,000feet above sea level with soaring windows and spectacular views of the valley below.

called Cumberland Plateau is a dramatic A-frame. The Lookout has an incredible view and a hot tub built into the deck. Videos of the Stone Door have made it a viral sensation on social media. “It was a passion project,” Douglass says. “I mean, it wasn’t monetary. It was just, I love it up here, and I love hanging out with my friends. And so, if I get more houses for my friends and it doesn’t bankrupt me, let’s try this.” As a 1983 alumnus of FRA, Douglass graduated from the School when it was still a fledgling institution. He says he most appreciates that FRA did not try to categorize him or put him in a box. He wanted to be a cheerleader at a time when there were no male cheerleaders at high schools in Nashville. He says the administration had no objection, so he and some friends joined the cheerleading team and had a blast. “The school has a nurturing environment that builds platforms for kids for where they are and who they are,” Douglass says. “I think it’s in the DNA of the school. It’s always been there. That’s been my experience.”

“It started as just a personal home,” Douglass says. “And then friends and clients were going up there and said, ‘this place rocks.’ So, I got this crazy idea to buy five more acres from my neighbor and build tree houses and A-frames.”

Douglass’ perspective on FRA is as both a student and parent. He and his wife have a daughter and two sons, both of whom graduated from FRA. Curry Douglass ’22 is a senior at Colorado State University and Harrison Douglass ’22 is a senior at Brown University. Both had very different interests in high school, and both had exceptional experiences at FRA, Douglass says.

In 2022, he built three more houses. In 2024, Douglass bought the whole valley, all 650 acres of it. In 2025, he built three more. Now known as the Tree Lofts, there are a total of seven luxury short-term rental properties on offer, each with its own name and unique characteristics. The one

With families looking for a change of scenery away from crowds, short-term rental properties ballooned in popularity during the pandemic. In various forms, they now dot dense urban neighborhoods and rural vistas across the country. But Douglass believes what he has built has enduring appeal.

“To me, I don’t think anybody’s done it anywhere in Tennessee like we have, and rarely anybody’s done it in the nation, in terms of the quality of the architecture. You just got to see it.” What visitors to the Rock House will see is a contemporary property that has been built into the side of a bluff, with an exposed 30-foot-tall rock face visible inside of the house. It is a staggering union of natural beauty and modern engineering. As far as Douglass knows, it is without precedent. Douglass splits his time between his Integrum Wealth office in Midtown Nashville and the Tree Lofts in Beersheba Springs. He plans to take a year off from expanding the Tree Lofts any further, but he foresees both additional demand and supply in the future. He’s contemplating adding three more short-term rentals, with the long-range potential of a total of 15 properties. “There are 10 million people within three hours of Beersheba Springs, including Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Birmingham, and Huntsville,” Douglass says. “So, we just have to find seven to 10 groups of people on a weekly basis that want that experience to make it work.”

Although many guests come from the Southeast U.S., the Tree Lofts have had visitors from as far away as Iceland and Ireland. A couple from Bermuda recently got married at the Tree Lofts. Douglass says three objectives guide the Tree Lofts project: help people get off the grid, help people connect with their friends and family, and help the Beersheba Springs community through employment opportunities. The architecture on display at the Tree Lofts is magnificent, but Douglass does not lose sight of the main attraction— the Grundy County scenery. He says, regardless of any future expansion, he wants to be responsible to the land. “What do we own anyways, right?” Douglass says. “We’re just leasing this. It’s not ours. It’s God’s, right? RESILIENCE: THE ART OF BOUNCING BACK By Allison Hammat, Director of Counseling

At our Counseling Coffee in November, we had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Dave Verhaagen, a nationally recognized psychologist and author, who shared powerful insights on raising resilient kids. His message was clear: resilience isn’t just a trait—it’s a skill, and it’s more critical than ever. Resilience is the art of bouncing back from hard things, and hard things are necessary. When parents step in too quickly to fix problems or shield their kids from failure, we rob them of the chance to learn, adapt, and grow. As Dr. Verhaagen noted, many young adults today feel inadequate to manage life because they were never given the space to fail and recover. So how do we help our children build resilience? Dr. Verhaagen offered a framework summarized in the acronym G.O.A.T.S: GROWTH-MINDED: Embrace effort and improvement over a fixed mindset. The best performers combine natural ability with a belief that hard work leads to growth. 40

OTHER-CENTERED: Foster empathy and genuine connection. People who focus on others live longer, adjust better, and find life more meaningful.

Peer Mentorship Program: FOSTERING LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND A FOUNDATION FOR SUPPORT

By Kendall Rogers, Interim Director of Diversity, Community, and Inclusion Franklin Road Academy is excited to pilot a new peer mentorship initiative involving middle and upper school students. We hope all students can be their best self, embrace their God-given gifts, and have an enriching experience. As outlined in our new strategic vision, we also intend to increase opportunities for student leadership that build perseverance, character, and resilience. This new program will pair middle school students one-on-one with an upper school mentor. Our goal is to help students foster new leadership skills and build a strong foundation of support that will empower them to thrive—both this year and in the years ahead. The program will also offer an additional leadership pathway for our upper school students who are passionate about engaging with younger students and supporting their experience. Through these meaningful partnerships, upper school mentors offer encouragement, guidance, and inspiration to their middle school peers. Students meet twice a month during lunch blocks and explore the topics of faith, effective leadership, and successfully navigating the academic and extracurricular rigor of FRA. We believe that when students have a mentor with whom they can connect, it jumpstarts their ability to navigate challenges and serve as a leader among their peers. The program is beginning with 26 students, 13 from both the middle and upper school divisions, who were chosen in collaboration with the leadership from each division. We hope to expand this initiative in the future and formalize a larger mentorship program. More participation across all divisions will help our students develop skills to succeed and serve as effective leaders at FRA and beyond.

ARTS GREASE, AP DRAWING, CHRISTMAS PERFORMANCES

WHERE THE 1950S MEET THE 1970S AND NOSTALGIA TAKES CENTER STAGE By Ross Bolen, Director of Theatre Audiences come to Grease thinking they are stepping into the 1950s. And they are—but only partially. What makes Grease fascinating is it’s a musical set in the ’50s; it’s also a distinctly 1970s interpretation of the ’50s, filtered through a lens of longing, rebellion, reflection, and stylized Americana. The first audiences of the ’70s and ’80s were parents and kids watching the parents’ high school days filtered through a modern lens. By the late ’90s and early 2000s, it was parents and kids watching a pop culture icon of their parents’ day that looked like the high school of the grandparents. It’s nostalgia layered on nostalgia. The ’50s we see in Grease are not historically accurate; it’s a pop-culture remix, like Happy Days, American Graffiti, and even Sha Na Na—all of which helped shape a specific 1970s retro aesthetic. Yes, it’s sock hops, poodle skirts and leather jackets, but with a modern wink and twist. One mark of its 1970s revisioning is a piece of delicious irony. For a show set in a decade remembered for a lack of strong female characters, Grease gives us a surprisingly diverse array. Sandy, Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty, and Jan are not just accessories to the boys’ stories. They’re navigating identity, ambition, and friendship in ways that feel surprisingly modern. Grease brings the 1950s into vivid technicolor, as only the 1970s could.

DRAWING ON CREATIVITY

AP STUDENTS CREATE ORIGINAL AND THOUGHTFUL PORTFOLIOS By Dr. Cindy Thornton, Director of Arts AP Drawing course is a year-long class in which students create 15 high-quality artworks to submit to the AP Board in May. Throughout the year, students are expected to demonstrate strong technical skills, creativity, thoughtful investigation, and intentional mark-making. Their portfolio should present a clear, unified story across all 15 pieces, supported by meaningful process notes. At the start of the course, we spend two weeks researching examples of strong, average, and weak AP portfolios to build a shared understanding of expectations. Students then explore areas of personal interest and generate 20 potential artwork ideas connected to their chosen theme. From there, students take ownership of their work, selecting the materials and formats that best support their vision. Approximately every two weeks, students complete a new piece of work. On each due date, the class participates in a group critique, providing constructive feedback to help one another strengthen their work and maintain a clear connection to their themes. Due to our trusting and supportive studio environment, students feel comfortable offering and receiving thoughtful, honest insight—an essential part of their artistic growth. In July, students will receive their final score from the AP Board, which will determine whether they have earned college credit.

BOLEN RECEIVES OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD Director of Theatre Ross Bolen received an outstanding teacher award from the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts in September. He was nominated by FRA junior Ava Dinkel, who participated in the program. Bolen was selected by the students, faculty, and staff of the Governor’s School for the Arts for a special commendation as one of Tennessee’s outstanding educators. GSFTA provides high quality arts education for gifted and talented high school students in the state of Tennessee. The pre-professional summer curriculum includes individual and group instruction designed to help each rising 11th and 12th grade student explore and develop talents in music, ballet, theatre, filmmaking, or visual art during a three-week summer intensive program.

FRA Junior Walker Webb Captures Individual State Golf Title

Franklin Road Academy junior Walker Webb turned in a historic final round performance to capture the 2025 Division II-A individual state golf title in October in Sevierville, TN. It was FRA’s first boys golf individual state championship in more than three decades.

Webb delivered a nearly flawless performance when it mattered most. He carded a bogey-free first round of 69 (-3) and was tied for the lead heading into the second day of play. His only bogey of the day was on the second hole and his final round of 65 gave him a 4-shot victory.

The FRA boys team also finished state runner-up for the third consecutive year.

Webb’s victory marks FRA’s first individual boys state title since Haymes Snedeker in 1993.

Webb claimed the state title with a scorching final round of 65 (-7), which tied an FRA boys school record. It was the lowest score across all divisions at this year’s state championships. His round of 65 is the 4th lowest score in TSSAA state championship round history.

As a team, the Panthers finished 7 shots off the pace set by first-time state champion First Baptist. In addition to Webb, FRA’s team featured Miguel de Gracia, Alex Cook, Jaime de Gracia, and Greyson Brasfield.

Two Senior Volleyball Players Reach Career Milestones In the course of one week, two standout Franklin Road Academy volleyball players eclipsed record-breaking milestones. Senior Savannah Sullivan became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 career digs and senior Ren Spencer became the program’s first player with 1,000 career assists.

Sullivan is a libero and defensive specialist who played varsity for the past five seasons. She crossed the 1,000-dig mark on September 4 in the Panthers’ 3-1 victory against Battle Ground Academy. Sullivan also played varsity as an eighth grader, but since there we no officially recorded statistics at that time, it’s likely she actually reached 1,000 digs sooner in her career. “This benchmark sets a new standard and establishes a legacy for future players to pursue; the bar has been set,” said head varsity volleyball coach Lisa Schaad. “Savannah’s impact extends beyond these statistics. She has significantly helped to shape the defensive culture of this program, proving defense wins matches.” Spencer is a setter who picked up her 1,000th assist on September 11 during the Panthers’ win against Brentwood Academy. She played varsity volleyball for four years and served as floor captain for the past two years.

FACULTY HIGHLIGHT The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association presented Franklin Road Academy director of athletics Kris Palmerton with the 2025-26 A.F. Bridges Award for the Athletic Director of the Year for Athletic District 5 in November. Athletic District 5 includes 75 public and private schools in seven middle Tennessee counties. The award, named in honor of the TSSAA’s first executive secretary, is given to schools and individuals in Tennessee in recognition of the ideals of ethics and integrity in the teaching and promotion of citizenship and sportsmanship. FRA Celebrates Excellence Across Four Decades with 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony Franklin Road Academy celebrated generational excellence across four different decades in October with the 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The Academy honored swimmer Alice Irvin Wilder ’82, tennis player Courtney Collins ’98, basketball player Rob Marberry ’14, and the 2005 State Champion Wrestling Team. The 2025 class is the 5th group to be inducted in FRA’s Hall of Fame. “Being a great athlete or a team, or for that matter, being a great artist or a great student, or just about being a great anything, doesn’t happen by accident,” said FRA head of school Sean Casey. “It requires having a vision for what might be possible and a willingness to work for that vision when average people are unwilling to do the same. And that is what we have here with our inductees today.” Alice Irvin Wilder is widely recognized as one of FRA’s first elite athletes. She competed in two National Swimming Championships and five National Junior Olympics. She was the first swimmer to represent FRA at the high school state championships, where she won the state title in the 500-yard freestyle her junior year and the 200- and 500-yard freestyle her senior year. She earned a scholarship to Auburn University.

During her acceptance remarks, Irvin Wilder recounted how her grueling training schedule, with sessions every morning and evening, made her something of an athletic oddity in the early 1980s. In an era before school uniforms at FRA, Irvin Wilder said many of her fellow classmates showed up to class in neat, coordinated outfits with styled hair and makeup. “I, on the other hand, would show up just before the first bell, after finishing my first practice for the day,” Irvin Wilder said. “I pulled clothes out of a gym bag. My hair was still wet, and while they wore a whiff of perfume, I smelled like chlorine. And I had goggle circles around my eyes until midday. While my classmates accepted my unique lifestyle, the faculty went above and beyond to ensure I was always supported in my educational journey. I was encouraged to follow my passion, while balancing it with my desire to excel in the classroom.” Rob Marberry was a two-time district MVP who earned the Division II-A Mr. Basketball Award. As a senior he led the Panthers to a 26-9 season and a trip to the state championship game. He concluded his time at FRA with more than 1,500 points and 850 rebounds. He went on to star at Lipscomb University and play professionally in Estonia, Denmark, and Germany.

“I can stand here all day and tell great stories of all the memories that I have in this gym,” Marberry said. “We had buzzer beater wins, blowout losses, tears of joy, miserable postgame meetings— tears of joy right now. What I remember the most is the great friendships through my time here. I had amazing teammates around me.” Courtney Collins qualified for the individual state tournament every year of her high school career at FRA. She also elevated the overall quality of the program, leading the girls tennis team to the state playoffs in both 1995 and 1997. She played collegiately at Samford University, where she contributed as a freshman and helped propel the team to the NCAA Tournament. During the ceremony, she was introduced by former longtime teacher and football and track coach David Tucker, who also led FRA’s chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “Coach Tucker had the biggest influence in my life, and you never even really coached me in anything,” Collins said. “But it was the art class. It was competition. It was FCA. It was God. It was just leading by example, and so many people at FRA led by example.” The 2005 wrestling team remains the only one in FRA history to win the state championship. The squad sent a record-breaking 10 individuals to represent FRA in the state tournament. Members of the team said their dominance was not achieved in a single season. Many of the wrestlers started in middle school at FRA and the Panthers built momentum and cohesion through high school, culminating with the state title. “It was really tight,” said coach Marc Taylor about the state finals. “It was amazing, but by the last two or three matches, the energy on the bench was you couldn’t stop them. And we knew we were going to win then, and then it happened.” The Athletic Hall of Fame class of 2025 featured a dominant swimmer from the 1980s, a standout tennis player from the 1990s, a state championship wrestling team from the 2000s, and a dominant basketball player from the 2010s. They played different sports and compiled distinct achievements, but their common legacy is defined by excellence and uplifting a school community. “I can leave you with one thought today as a result of my reflection, I hope you’ll remember this,” Irvin Wilder said. “While specific actions and words may eventually fade from our memory, the feeling of being supported, and the belief that our dreams are achievable, can lead to the deepest and most lasting impressions of all.”

Erin Nash ’21 After completing an internship with Schneider Electric in Franklin, TN, Erin has taken a full-time role with the company as a part of the Leadership Development Program.

Dr. Hunter Jackson ’10 recently matched for a fellowship in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. Hunter will complete his pediatric residency at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C. before relocating to Atlanta this summer. He completed medical school in 2022 at the University of South Carolina College of Medicine in Greenville and earned a master’s degree in biology/biochemistry from Georgetown University in 2015.

Mark Austin ’18 was awarded the North American Law Summit Akerman Student Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually to student leaders who have demonstrated a strong commitment to entertainment, sports, and intellectual property law, along with excellence in their legal studies. C.J. Fayne ’17 has started his own business, Rockne Group. His company will focus on investing in small and medium size business growth through strategic technology and analytics. The company will be based in Nashville.

Currey Douglass ’22 completed his summer internship with the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute in August 2025. Over 10 weeks, he contributed to the research across Colorado’s Front Range.

In Memory: Lara (Duncan) Mathes ’94 approached her education with dedication and wholehearted commitment. Following graduation, she pursued a master’s degree in urban and environmental planning and went on to shape community spaces throughout Athens-Clarke County and the University of Georgia. Yet her greatest joy and devotion were reserved for her family; caring for them and nurturing those bonds remained at the heart of everything she did.

Linda G. Arnold (former board member) As an FRA parent, Linda Arnold did whatever was needed to get done. She helped in the office when staff were out sick. She made the tablecloths for the banquet tables. She drove FRA buses. She organized and oversaw the Spaghetti Suppers, even commandeering a box truck to personally pick up the meal when it could not be delivered on time. Always upbeat, she never missed an opportunity to help FRA grow and improve. She served as a board member in the 1980s and was a parent to three alumni and one legacy. 63

FRA FUND The FRA Fund is a vital expression of the generosity and shared purpose that defines Franklin Road Academy. Support of the FRA Fund during the 2024–2025 fiscal year continues to directly strengthen the student experience and uphold the high standard of excellence for which FRA is known. During the summer of 2025, the Annual Fund was rebranded the FRA Fund, to more clearly articulate the fund’s comprehensive impact on the entire school. LEO Events Honors FRA Alumna Amy Manzanares With Tribute Gift Amy Manzanares ’95 was a passionate executive, volunteer, FRA alumna, and, above all else, mother. “Amy was a deeply devoted and endlessly energetic mom,” says friend and colleague Cindy Brewer. “She parented with the same intention, attentiveness, and heart that she brought to every aspect of her life.” Manzanares honed those traits at FRA, where she built lifelong friendships, was inspired by expert teachers, and received an exceptional education, propelling her to Southern Methodist University upon graduation. She worked for large event marketing and destination management firms before joining LEO Events, a global events company headquartered in Nashville, in 2012. Manzanares became a cornerstone of the agency’s growth and culture, ascending to senior vice president of account management. “Amy was a remarkable force in our lives and our business: thoughtful, sharp, competitive, generous, and just a little bit magic,” Brewer says. When Manzanares’ husband, Demian, passed away in 2018, she became the sole provider and caregiver to the couple’s two sons. “When Demian died, it was the lifetime of friendships Amy had built, largely via this community at FRA, that rose up to love and support her and the boys,” says friend Florence Chassaignac ’95. “These women, some of whom didn’t even know one another all that well, came together in an instant to be the firm foundation that Amy, Jake and Preston needed. This community of love constructed over 20 years knew how to respond because Amy had been showing us since the day we met her.” Amy Manzanares died unexpectedly from an illness on May 8, 2025 at the age of 48. Her employer, LEO Events, chose to make a tribute gift to FRA in her honor. The gift supports the Coach David Tucker Fund for Student Life, which enhances an FRA upper school student’s experience in the area of the arts, athletics, experiential learning, or spiritual life. Students with demonstrated financial need can apply each year for the funds. “As we look back on the people in Amy’s life, the vast majority of her friends were connected to FRA or LEO,” Chassaignac says. “So, the idea that LEO would invest in FRA on behalf of Amy seems like the most logical and fitting connection, tying these two organizations, for which she cared so deeply, together in her memory.” If you have a loved one who has been impacted by FRA, establishing a memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor that person while supporting the work of FRA’s mission. Abbie and Jason Giompoletti have a broad perspective on Franklin Road Academy. As parents of a current fourth grader, sixth grader, and ninth grader, they have sons in lower school, middle school, and upper school. While that makes morning drop-off and afternoon pickup a bit more complicated, the Giompolettis say they love that they are connected to all three divisions. “I think the community for us just gets better all the time, because every time we volunteer, every time we show up at a tailgate, every time we host something for the school, for kids or parents, we get to know more people,” Abbie Giomopletti says. “So, we are getting to know lower schoolers, middle schoolers, high schoolers, faculty, and staff. And I feel like we’re just kind of plugged into all fronts. The more that we do and the more that we put in here, the more that we get back.” The Giompolettis have been members of the FRA community for five years. They say their family has benefited from a number of recent improvements to campus. In the last two years, their sons have been able to take advantage of the new lower school turf field, the lower school playground, the new upper school building, and the Bracken Green. “There is kind of a sense of momentum around FRA right now, and it feels like we’re just getting bigger and better all the time; it’s a fun time to be a part of that,” Abbie Giompoletti says. The Giompolettis say their children spend a lot of time on campus between classes and extracurricular activities. They want to make sure that when their sons are not at home, they are in the presence of a caring community. They say their children are thriving, which is why they choose to invest in FRA.

“I think that’s a big part of why it’s important to us to support the school,” Jason Giompoletti says. “It’s where we spend a lot of our time, and where we spend a lot of our energy, so it just makes sense, that we should also continue to invest in the school. And I think we’ve gotten a lot in return for that as well.” FRA promotes participation in the FRA Fund among parents, employees, alumni and supporters. High levels of participation indicate widespread belief in the School’s mission. “Something that was powerful for me when I learned that 100% of the faculty and staff give to the FRA Fund,” Abbie Giompoletti says. “Some of them have children here, but some of them don’t, and they’re invested in the FRA Fund and the School. They’re the ones that are like the hands and feet here, carrying out the mission and the spirit of FRA. And if they’re fully invested in this community, how could we not be as parents? So that was something that was really powerful for me to learn.”

ENDOWMENTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, & AWARDS GENERAL ENDOWMENT FUND

Gifts made to the General Endowment help to sustain Franklin Road Academy for future generations and serve as a base for building a strong endowment. FRA began receiving gifts to this particular fund in 1992. These monies are governed by the FRA Board of Trustees.

WILLIAM L. CAMPBELL FACULTY ENDOWMENT FUND

This endowment fund was established in 1992 in honor of Dr. Campbell, who served as headmaster from 1981-1992. Each year, it honors an outstanding faculty member who creates an atmosphere where each child is comfortable to create, to learn, and to thrive. The 202425 award was presented to Cassie (Bates) Gatlin.

HALE HARRIS SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT FUND

This endowment fund was established in 1993 by loyal friends of Hale Harris. He was a member of the Board of Trustees and served as headmaster and head of the upper school. Each year, scholarships are awarded to outstanding upper school students with financial needs.

INGRAM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

This endowment fund was started by the Ingram family for the Ingram Scholarship. The scholarship is intended for a lower school minority student. Once awarded, the scholarship remains with the student until he or she graduates from Franklin Road Academy.

FRIENDS OF THE ARTS ENDOWMENT This fund was established by a generous donor to support and enhance the fine and performing arts programs at FRA.

MARGARET W. WADE ASSISTANCE FUND This fund was established in 1994 to honor Dr. Margaret W. Wade and is used to assist students in the lower school during times of family financial need.

MCKINNEY FAMILY ENDOWMENT FUND FOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING The McKinney Family Endowment Fund for Experiential Learning was created in 2020 to provide financial support annually for an FRA student to participate in a school-sponsored academic or mission trip experience.

LETTER OF JAMES ENDOWMENT FUND FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Created in 2021, the Letter of James Endowment Fund for Professional Development is used to provide the FRA upper school academic faculty opportunities to engage in professional development during the school year and/or during the summer months. The 2024-25 award was presented to Jennifer Archie.

NEWMAN FAMILY ENDOWMENT FOR PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT

The Newman Family Endowment for Professional Advancement of Franklin Road Academy was established by Elizabeth and David Newman to provide grants to assist a current FRA faculty member seeking an advanced degree. The 2024-25 award was presented to Angelica Marsh.

THE TURNER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

These fellowships, established in 2002 by The Cal Turner Jr. Family Foundation, allow rising seniors to serve in a six-week partnership with Nashville nonprofit organizations in order to experience a variety of service opportunities. This program sponsors students committed to making a difference in the lives of others. The 2024 Turner Fellowships were awarded to Constance Cooper, Parker Finnegan, Jin Holloway, MJ Jones, Nicholas Kouchoukos, Kylie LeAnna, Olivia Lown, Aubrey Spencer, Amory Taylor, Elliott Ybarra, Ean Zachariah, and Ruby Zullo.

COACH DAVID TUCKER FUND FOR STUDENT LIFE

David Tucker served the students of FRA as a mentor, coach, and advisor. He made an indelible impact on middle and upper school students as an art teacher and football, cross country, and track and field coach. His Christian faith permeated everything he did, and he was a spiritual role model and mentor for generations of students. As such, this permanent named endowment fund to honor his legacy is used annually to support and enhance an FRA upper school student’s experience in the area of the arts, athletics, experiential learning, and spiritual life.

CAROLE PIERATT AWARD FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

This award was established to honor Carole Pieratt for her dedication, love, and vision of the performing arts at Franklin Road Academy. This scholarship is awarded to a senior for artistic accomplishments, creativity, commitment, discipline, and leadership in the performing arts for the four years of his/her high school career. The 2024-25 award was presented to Claire Perrine.

WILLIAM B. AND GRETCHEN AKIN FACULTY AWARD

Mr. William B. Akin established this award through gifts given by friends and family in memory of Gretchen Grimes Akin. This award is given at upper school awards day to recognize an upper school employee who makes a difference in the lives of FRA students; gives of himself/ herself through time, talent, teaching and tutoring; and encourages and motivates. The 2024-25 award was presented to Dr. Stacey Banks-Houston.

BILLY L. BRADSHAW SR. SCHOLARSHIP

This fund was established through gifts given by friends and designated by the Bradshaw Family toward a scholarship awarded at upper school awards day to a senior who shows respect for school, country and heritage; a love of learning; strong leadership qualities; and a kindness and thoughtfulness toward others. The 2024-25 award was presented to Ean Zachariah.

PEGGY SHACKLEFORD READING AWARD This award was established in 2006 to honor Peggy Shackleford upon her retirement. Each year, recipients receive a copy of Mrs. Shackleford’s favorite book, Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” The 2024-25 award was presented to Rowan Brennan.

TROY GENTRY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

The mission of The Troy Gentry Foundation is to continue Troy’s personal beliefs: Love God, Love Others. Our goal is to strive to continue his work by providing financial support to organizations that fund cancer research, assist military families, help families in need, and provide music education through scholarships to future generations. The 2024-25 award was presented to Dylan Anderson and Conner Burchwell.

PAIGE DRAGON AWARD

The Paige Dragon Spirit Award is given annually to a lower school student in recognition of persistent determination and an optimistic attitude in striving toward personal and academic goals. This award was established in memory of Paige Dragon, who attended FRA from 1986 until 1989. The 2024-25 award was presented to Fletcher Faulkner.

NEHA DADLANI AWARD

The Neha Dadlani Award was established in 2006 by classmates and family in her memory. The award is given each year to a seventh-grade student who most exemplifies Neha’s sweet and caring spirit, enthusiastic love of life, and unforgettable dedication to excellence. The 2024-25 award was presented to Jackson Menser.
