Isn’t it hard to believe another Christmas has actually arrived?

People talk about something being “slow as Christmas” or “slower than Christmas” but in many ways Dec. 25 seems to arrive in a flash each year. One moment it’s jack-o’-lanterns; next minute it’s turkeys and pilgrims; and before

you can hardly blink your eyes, we’re decking the halls and trimming the tree and wrapping presents – and, the next second, unwrapping those selfsame presents.

“The holiday season” has been full of merriment in our community this year.

Certain sights and sounds are ingrained in the holiday season, from twinkling lights to carols piping over retailers’ sound systems. Amid the shelves of holiday wares and delicacies, fruitcake makes its annual appearance.

Fruitcake, sometimes referred to as plum cake or Christmas cake, can be prepared in various ways; however, a dense bundt-type cake dotted with dried, candied fruit and often soaked in rum or brandy has become the standard.

Loathed or loved, seldom anything in between, fruitcake is typically mocked as the ultimate regift, but just like Charlie Brown’s scant Christmas tree, which was initially mocked, it’s time to see fruitcake in a new light.

Regardless of its sometimes unfavorable reputation, fruitcake remains an unwavering holiday tradition. The website Serious Eats reports more than two million fruitcakes are sold each year.

Consider these fruitcake fun facts.

The texture of fruitcake can vary from cake-like to more of a sweet bread like brioche. Italians dig into panettone, Germans delight with stollen and Jamaicans serve black cake.

The first fruitcakes weren’t eaten. According to historians, fruitcakes were initially made by ancient Egyptians, who tucked the desserts into the tombs with their dead so a sweet treat could be enjoyed in the afterlife.

Fruitcake gained popularity as military rations, as everyone from Roman soldiers to Crusaders found fruitcake provided a diverse array of nutrients and an energy boost in warfare. Fruitcake also stores well, which can

be beneficial for military personnel in battle.

Fruitcake seemingly is indestructible. While it likely cannot last forever, Tastemade says if a fruitcake is kept in an airtight container and stored in a dark, cool place, it could be reheated years after being baked. Starch crystals and dried fruit in the cake will release stored water when warmed, rehydrating the cake.

Historical accounts indicate Romans were among the first people to eat fruitcake, which they might have enjoyed as early as 100 A.D. A version called “satura” was made by mixing stale bread with pine nuts, pomegranate seeds, raisins and then soaking

it in a barley mash and an alcoholic beverage brewed from honey.

Fruitcake became a popular dish to serve at British royals’ weddings.

Queen Victoria, Princess Diana and Prince William served fruitcake at their receptions.

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. has a fruitcake on display. It traveled into space on Apollo 11 in 1969, but was never eaten.

Seth Greenberg, who worked in his family’s New York City bakery, attests that fruitcake is delicious when made with the right ingredients.

The neon-colored, dry and overly sweet fruit that many bakers use is the problem with poor cakes. But proper ingredients like brandy, glace cherries, apricots, figs and dates can make for a delicious fruitcake.

The average fruitcake weighs between two and three pounds; however, the heaviest fruitcake on record, according to “The Guinness Book of World Records,” came in at 9,596 pounds. Despite the hefty weight of this cake, it’s only around 92 to 160 calories per serving.

Cultura Garden Club members celebrated their annual Christmas dinner at the home of Brenda and Troy Oliver. Decorated throughout with beautiful Christmas decorations, it was open for members to tour. Club members prepared a delicious dinner, enjoying it in the formal dining room.

Susan Pearson presented the program “Houseplants Help Fight Winter Blues,” encouraging beautifying your indoor spaces with plants to connect you to nature. Pearson said this can benefit your mood by providing anticipation for what life will be like when spring arrives.

Another benefit she shared is that plants can improve the quality of the air in your home. This was confirmed by a NASA

study that concluded plants help to improve the air quality by releasing oxygen and absorbing air toxins.

Being surrounded by plants creates a calm, welcoming environment as it relieves stress and symptoms of anxiety.

Research has proven plants are known to help people feel more relaxed, comfortable and soothed.

Brenda Oliver presented “What to do if Houseplants Have Yellow Leaves.” Oliver said this is a sign of overwatering.

You can correct this problem by letting the soil dry out or repotting the plant in dry soil.

When your whole plant turns yellow, it could be waterlogged, meaning roots can’t get enough oxygen. If the soil feels soggy, don’t water again until the top inch of soil dries out.

Six Cultura Garden Club members attended the Alabama State Every Light a Prayer for Peace, held at the State Capitol, and the Garden Clubs of

Alabama Reception at the Governor’s Mansion. This is the 77th year, and the theme of the ceremony, “Every Light a Prayer for Peace,” was started by the Garden Clubs of Alabama.

Attendees shared the Christmas tree was fortyfive feet tall, an Eastern Red Cedar adorned with 50,000 lights. The State of Alabama reported

it was the tallest tree it had ever displayed.

Governor Ivey counted down from 10 before she flipped the switch. Club members attended the Garden Clubs of Alabama reception and enjoyed taking in the beautiful Christmas decorations at the Governor’s Mansion.

The highlight of the evening was a “Dirty Santa” gift exchange.

By Staff Reports Tracie Clark of Red Bay, Ala., has qualified to seek election for Franklin County Commissioner for District 4.

I am proud and excited to announce my candidacy for Republican nomination for Franklin County Commissioner District 4.

I am a resident of Red Bay and have been actively involved in Franklin County. I believe that my experience and dedication to the county make me an ideal candidate for this position.

I am happily retired from the City of Red Bay as Revenue Officer after working 34 years. I am a graduate of Red Bay High School and Northwest

Junior College. I have also received certification from the University of Alabama continuing education classes as a certified municipal revenue officer. I am married to Jeff Clark who is the director of manufacturing at Tiffin Motorhomes.

I have two children, Trey Bolding (Olivia) and Britan Crow (David). I also have one grandchild, Chloe Crow, who is two years old.

I am presently a member of the Franklin County Chamber Board of Directors, Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association, the Red Bay Tree Commission, Red Bay Civitan’s Club (secretary), Red Bay Garden Club (vice president), Red Bay Christmas Parade Committee, Bay Tree Council of Performing Arts patrons and the Franklin County Seekers of the Past. I am the past chairman of Red Bay Founders Fest and a past board member for

North Alabama Mountain Lakes. I was also the past treasurer of the Red Bay Tip Off Club and the past secretary of the Red Bay Lions Club, as well as a member of the Franklin County Bicentennial Board.

If I am elected as your Franklin County Commissioner for District 4, I will work hard to ensure that the county’s needs are met and that our voices are heard. I will be accessible to all members of this great county and will work hard for you.

The A l ab a m a High School Athletic Association has released the new classifications for the 2024-2026 school years. Every two years, the AHSAA reclassifies schools based on the number of students each school has in grades 9-11.

Belgreen basketball teams continue season with wins

By Bart Moss For the FCT BELGREEN BOYS Braycen Johnson had a hot week shooting, putting up big numbers helping the Bulldogs to two wins over Phillips and Smithville.

Johnson scored 32 points against Smithville (MS) on Friday in a 56-45 win.

B e l g re e n led Smithville 23-14 at the end of the first quarter and 39-30 at halftime.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 51-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Johnson made six three-pointers and scored 14 points in the first quarter.

Will King followed Johnson, scoring nine points, Landon Cox five points, Jonathan Mendoza four points, Ely Mitchell three points and Aaron Rubido three points.

Against Phillips, Belgreen led 19-14 at the

end of the first quarter, but Phillips came back to take a 28-27 lead at halftime.

Belgreen reclaimed the lead at the end of the third quarter 46-34. The Bulldogs dominated the fourth quarter outscoring Phillips 21-2 to seal the win.

Johnson and King led Belgreen with 18 points each, with Alex Guidry following with 16 points and Mendoza with 11 points. Gabe Estrada added four points.

Belg reen lost to Cherokee 53-49.

Cherokee raced out to a 20-10 first quarter lead, but Belgreen clawed back to cut the Indians’ lead to 26-20 at halftime.

Cherokee outscored Belgreen 16-5 in the third quarter to expand their lead to 42-25 and held off a Belgreen comeback in the fourth quarter.

Johnson led Belgreen with 26 points, including 17 of the Bulldogs’ 24 fourth quarter points.

King went 7 for 10 from

the free throw line and scored 17 points.

Mendoza added four points and Mitchell two points.

Belgreen raced out to a 16-3 first quarter lead and had effectively put the game away at the halfway mark, leading 34-8.

Following Green, Lilliana Willingham, Makenna Fisher and MacKinley Hogan scored eight points each.

Lily Green added five points, Carson Hovater four points and Morgan Lauderdale three points.

Bryn Scott, Jacqueline Alban and Isabella Tate scored two points each.

Belgreen got two other blowout wins last week, beating Cherokee 66-28 and Carbon Hill 74-37.

In the Cherokee game, Belgreen led 33-16 at halftime.

Lilliana Willingham and Carson Hovater led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 17 points respectively.

Bryn Scott and Dacota Green scored nine points each, Jacqueline Alban four points, Makenna Fisher three points, MacKinley Hogan three points, and Laura Seale two points.

Against Carbon Hill, Belgreen led 40-18 at the end of the first half and 58-29 at the end of the third quarter.

Makenna Fisher led Belgreen with 16 points.

Lilliana Willingham and Carson Hovater scored 10 points each. Alayana Tate added nine points, MacKinley Hogan eight points, Dacota Green eight points, Lily Green seven points and Isabella Tate six points.

The Phil Campbell Bobcats picked up a pair of area wins last week beating Colbert Heights 46-33 and Colbert County 42-33.

Against Colbert Heights, the Bobcats held a slim 8-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Hannah Welborn scored eight of Phil Campbell’s 13 second quarter points as the Bobcats took a 21-17 halftime lead.

Phil Campbell gave themselves some room to breathe in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 19-9. Macy Hardy scored eight of the Bobcats 19 points in the third quarter. The Bobcats held onto to the lead in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Welborn led Phil Campbell with 18 points.

Hardy and Leela Baker followed with 10 points each. Mia Ambrosio and Sidda Rogers added four points each.

Phil Campbell’s game with Colbert County ended with the Bobcats winning 42-33.

Colbert County led Phil Campbell 5-4 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bobcats took a 13-9 lead into the halftime locker room. As in the Colbert Heights game, the Bobcats came out of halftime hot, outscoring the Indians 19-6 to take a 32-15 lead.

Hardy led Phil Campbell with 18 points, followed by Welborn with 17 points and Baker with 10 points. Ambrosio added two points.

Belgreen High School athlete signs with softball scholarship

By Bart Moss For the FCT Belgreen’s Hannah Borden signed a softball scholarship with Bevill St ate C om mu n it y College recently.

Borden, a third baseman and pitcher for the Bulldogs, had 46 hits last year, knocked in 39 batters and stole 16 bases.

“I am excited to f inally complete a goal of mine to have the opportunity to play softball in college,” said Borden. “I am excited and ready for my senior season at

Belgreen.”

Belgreen softball coach Sander Tverberg said he believes Borden’s work ethic and knowledge of the game will help her succeed at the junior college level.

“I am extremely proud of Hannah and her enthusiasm to play at the next level,” said Tverberg. “She is a very hard worker, she is dedicated to the game and has persevered throughout her life. She is a true competitor and will be successful in whatever she takes on.”

Florence 70, Russellville 61 Florence visited Russellville Dec. 12 and the 7A Falcons overcame a 35-31 halftime deficit to get the win. RHS was again without Copeland who missed her second consecutive game.

for Russellville. Jemma Moore and Laila Hill added seven each. Eighthgrader Sadie Odom saw her first varsity action and had six points. Alexia Groce finished with five and Aleah Bonman scored two points.

Russellville 48, Belgreen 42 Russellville went to Belgreen Dec. 15 and got the win over the Lady Bulldogs in a close battle.

RHS improved to 5-5 on the season with the victory over their rivals from Franklin County.

scored 16 in her return to action. Avery Watts and Jemma Moore had six points apiece, Desiree Medina scored two and Laila Hill added one.

BOYS Jasper 69, Russellville 50 The Vikings handed the RHS boys their first loss of the season on Dec. 11. Jasper led 38-22 at the half and 53-29 after three quarters.

EJ King led Russellville with 15 points, and Amir Williams followed closely with 14. Rylan Pratt scored six, Malachi Duncan had five, KJ Murray four, Gavin Hyde

three, Mike Young two and Jah Williams scored one.

Florence 71, Russellville 66 Russellville fell for the second-straight night as the Falcons overcame a 12-point deficit heading into the game’s final quarter to get the road win.

EJ King again led RHS in scoring, this time with 20 points. Amir Williams and Bralynn Vincent had 11 each, and they were followed by Malachi Duncan with nine. Mike Young and Jah Williams added five apiece, Gavin Hyde scored three and KJ Murray had two points.

Austin 73, Russellville 52 The Golden Tigers went to Austin High School in Decatur on Dec. 15 to open the two-day Pepsi Classic.

RHS dropped their thirdstraight contest as the 7A Austin team continued their hot start to the season.

Russellville 74, Tanner 60 RHS got back on the winning track with a victory over 2A Tanner to finish play in the Pepsi Classic at Austin High.

The Golden Tigers stayed sharp throughout the contest and improved to 4-3 on the season with the win.

Franklin County Schools junior basketball teams continue season

By Bart Moss For the FCT Red Bay and Belgreen were the only two schools to field a B-junior girls team in the Franklin County Tournament. By default, the two teams were in the finals. Red Bay beat Belgreen 31-20 to capture the trophy.

Red Bay led Belgreen 4-3 at the end of the first quarter. Belgreen took a 10-8 lead at halftime. Red Bay recaptured the lead by the end of the third quarter 19-18; however, foul trouble sent two of Belgreen’s guards to the bench, and Red Bay took advantage, pulling away for the win.

Kaitlyn Lindley led Red Bay with 10 points. She was followed by Kameron Kuykendall with eight points, Makayla Jackson

with five points, Maddie Blackburn with four points and Libby Thorne with four points.

Alexia Gault led Belgreen with 10 points.

She was followed by Kiera Smith and Charley Hogan with three points each.

Anna Clair King added two points.

The East Franklin A-junior girls won their fourth straight junior high Franklin County championship Saturday night, beating Tharptown 52-22.

Kylee Santiago led the way for the Rebels with 19 points, 14 coming in the first half.

East Franklin led the Wildcats 10-6 at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Tharptown 14-4 in the second quarter to take a 24-10 halftime lead.

The Rebels were firmly in control coming out of the locker room and put the game away in the third quarter, taking a 37-18 lead.

Bailey Jewell followed Santiago with 17 points and Layla Baker with 10 points. Chaley Bullington, Emily Walker and Paige Denton scored two points each.

Angeleah Smith led Tharptown with 11 points.

East Franklin punched their ticket to the finals by beating the Vina Red Devils 41-29.

The Rebels led the Red Devils 24-6 at halftime.

Layla Baker led East Franklin with 20 points.

Marissa Lamar led Vina with six points.

Tharptown got to the finals by beating Phil Campbell 28-16.

The Wildcats led the

Bobcats 20-10 at halftime.

Carly Cason led Tharptown with 16 points.

Lily Steward led Phil Campbell with eight points.

The Belgreen defense was the star of the show as the Bulldogs shut down the hot shooting Red Bay Tigers to win the B-junior boys Franklin County championship 41-26.

The Tigers scored 50 in the first half the previous day against an East Franklin team and defeated a Tharptown team as well. Belgreen, however, was intent on stopping the Tigers in the championship game. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to single digits all four quarters of the game.

Belgreen led Red Bay 10-8 at the end of the first quarter, but the Tigers clambered back in the

second quarter to tie the game 14-14 at halftime.

The Bulldogs dominated the third quarter with Belgreen outscoring Red Bay 14-3 to take a 28-17 lead into the final period of play. The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers the rest of the way to get the win.

Offensively, it was Andrew Enriquez who led the way for Belgreen scoring 16 points, followed

by Colton Ashton with 12 points. Rush Berryman added nine points and Miguel Cordoba four points.

Aaron Morrow led Red Bay with nine points, followed by Davo Colburn with seven points. Karsyn Powell and Carson Lindley scored three points each.

Chaston Poores and Jayden Pearson added two points each.

Belgreen had no problem earning a bid to the finals, beating Phil Campbell 48-20.

The Bulldogs dominated the first quarter of play, racing out to a 21-2 lead and extending the lead to 33-11 at halftime.

Belgreen had three players in double figures.

Rush Berryman led the way with 15 points. Colton Ashton and Andrew Enriquez scored 11 points each.

Cross Bell led Phil Campbell with eight points.

The Tigers led the Wildcats 23-13 at the end of the first quarter and 38-19 at halftime, effectively putting the game away.

Conner Vincent led Tharptown with 15 points.

Red Bay opened the tournament on fire, outscoring the East Franklin Rebels 50-9 in the first half and going on to win 60-30.

Clayton Lindley led Red Bay with 14 points, followed by Davo Colburn with 12 points.

Tiffin Bullington led East Franklin with 11 points.

After a slow start, the Phil Campbell Bobcats dominated the Vina Red Devils 43-21.

The Bobcats led the Red Devils 6-3 at the end of the first quarter but dominated the second quarter to take a 27-11 halftime lead.

Phil Campbell extended their lead to 35-13 at the end of the third quarter.

Max Robinson had the hot hand for Phil Campbell, draining five first half three pointers and leading the Bobcats with 19 points.

STATE OF ALABAMA COUNTY OF FRANKLIN NOTICE is hereby given that a bill substantially as follows will be introduced in the 2024 Regular Session of the Legislature of Alabama and application for its passage and enactment will be made: R4LCYY-1 12/05/2023 THR (L)THR 2023-2444 DRAFT DOCUMENT: NOT OFFICIAL LEGISLATION A BILL TO BE ENTITLED AN ACT Relating to Franklin County; to provide for the annual expense allowance and salary and other benefits for the coroner; and to further authorize the Franklin County Commission to appropriate and expend funds for the operation of the office of the coroner.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA: Section 1. (a) The Coroner of Franklin County shall receive an expense allowance in the amount of nine thousand seven hundred dollars ($9,700) per annum, which shall be in addition to all other expense allowances, compensation, or salary provided by law. The expense allowance shall be paid in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the county. (b) Effective beginning the next term of office, the expense allowance provided for in subsection (a) shall be void, and the Coroner of Franklin County shall receive an annual salary of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) to be paid in equal monthly installments from the general fund of the county. The salary in this subsection shall be the total compensation paid to the coroner, subject to the adjustments provided in subsection (c). (c) In addition to the salary provided in subsection (b), the salary of the coroner shall be increased by any uniform increases in compensation granted equally to all county employees by the Franklin County Commission. In addition, the coroner may participate in the county health insurance plan and any retirement plan provided to county employees under the same terms as county employees. (d) The Franklin County Commission may appropriate

2213), as amended by Act 90461, 1990 Regular Session (Acts 1990, p. 653); Act 491, 1971 Regular Session (Acts 1971, p.1205); and Act 446, 1973 Regular Session (Acts 1973, p. 636) are repealed.

Section 3. This act shall become effective on June 1, 2024.
