A MESSAGE from the PRESIDENT

Dear Friends, A quality baccalaureate education is essential for success in today’s world and has become the most accessible conduit for opening doors into any number of professional endeavors after graduation. For most of our students, this involves working in the public, private, or non-profit sectors, or matriculating into graduate, medical or law programs.

This is especially true of Francis Marion. So many of our students are the first in their families to attend college. During their years at the university, they are presented with numerous opportunities to broaden their knowledge and pursue opportunities that their parents never envisioned.

Of course, all of this is made possible by the instruction and mentoring of one of the finest faculties in higher education, a faculty that has become uniquely adept at educating first generation college students.

It is also made possible by the generous support of donors such as you - our friends - who contribute to the FMU Education Foundation. Your gifts provide scholarship opportunities for deserving students, funding to enhance our academic facilities, and endowed support for our faculty.

Dear FMU Education Foundation Supporters, It is my privilege to serve my alma mater as Vice President for Institutional Advancement & Executive Director of the FMU Education Foundation.

Each and every day, I have the honor of hearing stories from so many of our current students and alumni who have been able to attend college at Francis Marion University due to the generous support from donors to the FMU Education Foundation. Having the opportunity to play a role in helping change the lives of our students is something I do not take lightly and is one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. You see, I was one of those students who received a scholarship from the Education Foundation, so I know first-hand how impactful your support is for our students.

You have made a Francis Marion University education possible for thousands of students for over fifty years. Your commitment to the university and our students is deeply appreciated and does not go unnoticed. Because of your support, our students are able to focus on their education because they know that the financial support they need to earn their degrees is provided for them through your generous donations.

FMU has an excellent reputation not only because of its academics, but also because of its supportive community. AREAS OF NEED Annual Scholarships – Annually funded scholarships provide an important source of funds for students with financial need. Donors make a year-by-year commitment to provide these scholarships in varying amounts.

Endowed Scholarships – Endowed Scholarships provide a permanent source of financial assistance to deserving students. Through the endowment process, scholarship funds continue to grow over the years, thereby assisting future students in perpetuity.

Annual Fund – Gifts to the FMU annual fund support student scholarships, instructional technology, library acquisitions, and faculty development.

Program Support – Gifts that support specific academic programs and student organizations or create funds to distinctively support students and faculty at Francis Marion University.

Swamp Fox Club – All money raised for the Swamp Fox Club benefits every sport at FMU. The support provides educational and athletic opportunities to worthy student athletes.

TYPES OF GIVING Pledges – You may pledge and pay your contribution over a number of months or years.

Securities – A gift of appreciated securities brings the donor greater tax savings than gifts of cash. You avoid paying capital gains on the increased value of the stock. You receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the stock when the gift is made.

Bequests by Will – The Education Foundation may be named as a beneficiary in wills to receive gifts of funds or property, or may be named as a residual beneficiary, or the donor’s will may set up a split-interest trust for the joint benefit of the Education Foundation and the donor’s family.

Matching Gifts – Many employers have corporate matching gift programs, allowing a donor’s gift to be matched by their employer.

Honorary and Memorial Gifts – A gift in memory or in honor of someone is a special way to recognize a person’s life and accomplishments.

Real Estate – A gift of real estate provides considerable savings in capital gains tax due upon the sale of appreciated property. At the same time, you receive a charitable deduction for the full market value of the property subject to the limitations described under the Securities section.

Life Insurance – The cash-surrendered value of a life insurance policy is immediately tax deductible.

By designating the Education Foundation as both the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, premiums are tax deductible to the donor.

Split-interest charitable trusts and annuities – A donor’s property of virtually any description may be used to establish a charitable trust or annuity. With a charitable lead trust, the FMU Education Foundation receives the income for a period selected by the donor, after which the trust corpus is returned to the donor and their family. With a charitable remainder trust, the donated asset could be sold without incurring capital gains tax and the donor would receive the trust’s income for their lifetime. Upon death, the assets would pass to the FMU Education Foundation.

DARLA MOORE & FMU A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP

The relationship between Lake City native and philanthropist Darla Moore and Francis Marion University has blossomed in recent years, bringing forth fruit that has created opportunities for the region and the state.

Moore has long put her philanthropic efforts toward the place where she grew up, and where she still calls home, but the contribution to Francis Marion points towards a longevity that cannot be overstated.

In August 2021, FMU and The Darla Moore Foundation announced the creation of The Darla Moore Scholarship, a $5 million gift — $1 million a year for five years — made possible by the generosity of The Darla Moore Foundation. This scholarship will cover tuition and room and board for recipients each semester.

Fall 2022 marked the first semester where Darla Moore Scholars set foot on FMU’s campus. The impact has been nothing short of life changing.

“These scholarships are supporting students who possibly could not attend college otherwise,” said Dr. Fred Carter, President of Francis Marion University. “They have a deep impact among students who will be the first in their family to attend college, which represents a significant portion of our student body. What Darla has done is give these young men and women an opportunity to become authors of their own futures through the complete university experience.

This impact cannot be overstated, and I’m deeply appreciative to Darla for her generosity and friendship.”

Since its inception in 2010, The Darla Moore Foundation has had a significant impact on not only its founder’s hometown of Lake City, but the entire state of South Carolina.

RACHEL HODGES INTERNATIONAL FUND NEW FUND WILL ENHANCE STUDY ABROAD FOR FMU STUDENTS A unique, new educational fund was unveiled in the spring of 2021 that is already changing the world for some Francis Marion University students.

The Rachel Hodges International Travel Fund, created to honor former South Carolina First Lady Rachel Hodges’ commitment to education, was created in order to expand students’ horizons through international travel.

Along with her husband, former South Carolina Governor James H. “Jim” Hodges, the program supports FMU’s popular study abroad programs. Assisting select FMU students, the fund covers some of the expenses incurred while studying abroad, including the cost of travel.

The Rachel Hodges International Travel Fund gives preference to female, first-generation college students from the Pee Dee who might not otherwise experience international travel.

“Study abroad is an eye-opening experience that creates more confident and well-rounded students and citizens,” the Hodges

said in a jointly released statement in April 2021 with the announcement of the program. “Rachel was a first-generation college student who grew up in Hartsville, and we wanted to create an opportunity for young women from the Pee Dee to enjoy the experience of studying abroad. We are pleased to support the great work being done at Francis Marion, and happy for the young women who will benefit from this scholarship.”

The relationship between the Hodges, FMU and the Pee Dee runs deep. Rachel Hodges brought an American Red Cross leadership conference to the university several years ago. Governor Hodges is a long-time supporter of FMU and chair of the University’s McNair Committee, which oversees selection of recipients of the McNair Scholarship, FMU’s most prestigious academic award. Hodges also holds an honorary doctorate from FMU. Dr. Fred Carter, FMU’s president, lauded the generosity of his longtime friends and praised their commitment.

“Jim and Rachel Hodges are bringing an inspiring vision to life through the creation of this new fund, and at the same time, are enhancing a program that’s already a vital part of the FMU experience,” said Carter. “We’ve worked diligently during the past two decades to build a strong international program at FMU because it can make such a difference in the lives of our students. Travel is life changing.”

“Our faculty understands this dynamic, and our students and families understand it, too,” said Carter. “The only hurdle we’ve ever faced in this area is financial. And now, thanks to the generosity of the Hodges, that hurdle is lower than it was before.”

FMU has study-abroad exchange agreements with 12 different universities in six countries.

Additionally, groups of FMU students regularly make short-term trips abroad that include study and other enrichment activities.

FMU DISTINGUISHED ALUM CHARNISSE KELLY ASSURES QUALITY

FMU Alumni Advisory Board since 2018.

Each year, the FMU Alumni Association presents deserving graduates with Distinguished Alumni Awards. Kelly received the Professional Industry Award in Medical and Health Sciences in 2022.

When there is something wrong in a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant or a company that makes medical devices, there’s an expert who companies around the world turn to, and she just happens to be a graduate of Francis Marion University.

“I'm kind of like the fixer,” said FMU alum Charnisse Kelly. “When they call upon consultants, I'm one of the people that comes to help them.”

Kelly identifies the problem(s) and suggests solutions.

“I help rebuild their quality so they can regain their confidence,” she said. “And I help the FDA regain confidence in that particular company.”

The North Charleston native received a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in sociology and collateral in chemistry from FMU in 1996.

Kelly received a Master of Science in Quality Assurance from California State University in 2013. She owns and operates CL&D Pharma Consulting, LLC. She also created her own endowed scholarship and has been an active member of the

Kelly was seventeen when she arrived at FMU. She didn’t know anyone on campus, but she quickly made lasting friendships.

After graduation, many of her biology classmates went to work for the central hub at Labcorp in Burlington, North Carolina and that was something Kelly considered - but she ended up back in the Charleston area where she worked in customer service for Hill-Rom, a hospital bed manufacturer.

She spent nine years with the American Red Cross, first transporting blood to hospitals.

She then transferred to the American Red Cross’s National Testing Lab in Charlotte. “That’s where my career started,” she said.

Kelly created the endowed scholarship in 2019. “I wanted to give back,” she said. “I was at a point where I had the opportunity to financially give back, so FMU is where I started, and it helped with my career and was just a natural place to give.”

Kelly treasures the Distinguished Alumni Award that she received in March 2022. “That was extraordinary,” she said. “I was shocked. It was unexpected, because it just goes to show that you never know who's watching you, and they feel that you're worthy.”

Kelly started her one-person company five years ago and traveled extensively before the pandemic. Now she does most of her work remotely and really enjoys it.

She started as a lab technician and eventually worked in quality assurance. Then it was on to Atlanta to work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as a contractor through Lockheed Martin.

FMU DEDICATES SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF LONGTIME BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEMBER FRANK ELMORE

Trustees. As a member of the Board, Elmore played a key role in Francis Marion’s growth over the next twenty years.

After graduating from FMU, Frank went on to the University of South Carolina School of Law where he met his wife, Lee. The couple married in 1976.

A new scholarship in memory of Frank Elmore was recently dedicated. Elmore was a longserving board member and alumnus of Francis Marion who passed away in December 2021.

Elmore graduated from FMU in 1973 and was a member of the school’s Board of Trustees for twenty years. The Frank Elmore Scholarship began awarding $2,500 scholarships to thirty-two students in fall 2022.

“Frank Elmore was a champion for Francis Marion University and he truly loved this institution,” said Dr. Fred Carter, president of FMU. “The entire university community feels his loss deeply, but Frank’s passion for educating the men and women of South Carolina will endure with every student who benefits from the scholarship bearing his name.”

Frank’s relationship with FMU has its roots at the institution’s start in 1970. An active member of the campus community as a student, Elmore served as president of the student body. Nearly thirty years after graduating, he was appointed to the Board of

We genuinely appreciate the University recognizing Frank in such a meaningful fashion,” Elmore said of the scholarship.

“I just can’t tell you how much this means to the entire Elmore family.”

A first-generation college graduate, Frank deeply valued the education he received at FMU. He credited the university with creating the foundation for the life and career he dreamed of. Lee said her husband never forgot the role Francis Marion played in his life and always sought to give back to the institution.

“One of the most admirable things about Frank was that he knew what was important and he always showed up for it,” Lee said. “He understood the importance of the education he had at Francis Marion and wanted to help in any way he could. He drove down (from Greenville) for every meeting and every graduation. He was just that dedicated.”

According to Lee, helping students achieve the same educational foundation that was integral to Frank’s life and career

is a fitting way to honor Frank’s legacy at FMU. “To know how much the university thought of Frank and how important he was to the school is an honor we can all be proud of,” she said. “Hopefully, somebody that really had to work hard to get to FMU will have a little extra help because of Frank’s memory.”

“I've done some other [philanthropic] things. I decided, in talking with the girls, that we certainly needed to honor my first husband and their father, Howard,” Ms. Baskin said. “We decided the most appropriate would be a scholarship fund at FMU within the School of Business, as his professional interest had been in that field.”

A native of Florence, F. Howard DeBerry, businessman and realtor, developed several residential areas of the city.

As a civic leader, he served on numerous local endeavors including the committee which identified a land tract for the establishment of the USCFlorence campus which became today’s Francis Marion University.

That feat became a reality in 1960 when 100 acres of farmland in Mars Bluff were donated for the school. Today, the School of Business at FMU will continue to grow in this developer’s name, thanks to a generous donation from his wife, Kathleen, and their children.

Kathleen Lazar Baskin, now 104 years young, recently established the F. Howard DeBerry Business Endowed Scholarship. With the assistance of their three daughters: Kathleen Brungard of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Jacquelyn Odell of Chapin, S.C., and Maria Clayton of Springfield, VA, $100,000 was pledged to the FMU Education Foundation to provide annual support for students majoring in business

After Howard DeBerry’s sudden death in 1965, Kathleen carried on the residential development business they had built together.

“I worked with him,” she said.

“I was his wife, the mother of his children, his secretary, his treasurer, his partner, and so when he passed away, I just continued on with the business.”

In 1967, Kathleen married Ed Baskin and moved to Bishopville, S.C., while managing her real estate interests in Florence. In 2009, she returned to Florence, residing at The Manor and focusing on her philanthropic interests.

Among a long list of philanthropic efforts, Ms. Baskin established “Rick’s House” on the grounds of The Manor. It provides roundthe-clock care for four men with special needs. Rick (Frederick Howard DeBerry, Jr.) was her eldest child, a son with special needs, who died at the age of 31.

Due to her life’s work in real estate development, Ms. Baskin has been privileged to have a front row seat to history and events that very well could have changed the landscape of both Francis Marion University and the

NEW FMU SCHOLARSHIP CREATED IN HONOR OF FLORENCE DEVELOPER City of Florence. She remembers that the search committee on which Howard DeBerry served initially looked at land on the southwest side of Florence near South Cashua Road for the USCFlorence campus. Today, the campus sits on land generously donated by the families of Walter G. and J.W. Wallace.

According to Ms. Baskin, the area where FMU resides became the best place for the institution.

Its current location aside, she said the impact FMU has had on the Pee Dee cannot be underestimated.

“It's one of the best things that’s happened around this area,” she said. “Look at all these people.

They had no chance of getting an advanced education in this whole Pee Dee area. Just think of all the people that have graduated from college because of FMU.” She loves the reasonable tuition, the growth of the campus and programs, and the university’s mission to educate firstgeneration college students.

And now, she, along with her daughters, is thankful to play a part in the education of students studying in FMU’s School of Business through this endowment in memory of her late husband.

“I’m very proud of it,” she said.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP CREATED IN MEMORY OF CROSHAW’S LEGACY Dr. Lynn Croshaw had plans to be a medical doctor, but a Rotary Club Fellowship in 1963 turned Croshaw’s focus to education.

After graduating from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, Croshaw received a fellowship to study at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. At Makerere University, Croshaw decided he wanted to be an educator instead of a doctor, his wife Audrey Croshaw said.

“He really wanted to become an M.D., but life has many twists and turns as we know,” said Audrey.

“He spent a year of his life in Africa after he graduated with his degree from Bates College. He spent a year living amongst the people, learning the language, and going to school there. It was quite an experience for him.”

When he returned to the United States, he went to the University of Maryland, College Park, and earned his doctorate. While working on his doctorate, he taught classes at the University of Maryland.

His next step brought him and his wife to Florence, S.C., where he became a professor in the biology department at Francis Marion in 1970, the year Francis Marion, then College, was founded. At the time, the campus consisted of two buildings.

Croshaw would go on to teach anatomy, genetics, embryology, and neurology at the university until his retirement as professor emeritus in 2004.

The Croshaws had three children, Dr. Randal Lee Croshaw, Kevin John Croshaw, and Deborah Bledsoe.

Lynn Croshaw died on May 25, 2016.

PROFESSOR Audrey Croshaw said she wanted to do something to help others get an education after the death of her husband. The Dr. Lynn M. Croshaw Endowed Scholarship was established through the Francis Marion University Education Foundation in December 2019.

“It was something that had been in my heart for a while,” she said. “He loved to help people … and he loved teaching. I just thought that was the best way we could do something.”

The scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior student pursuing a degree in biology and planning to teach at the high school or college level. Preference is given to biology majors seeking a doctorate.

Croshaw would not have been able to pursue a college education without receiving scholarships, Audrey Croshaw said.

Lynn Croshaw was born in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, in 1940. He was raised by his grandparents – John Phillip and Elizabeth Croshaw – from the age of 5.

“There wasn’t a lot of money for people to do things,” she said.

“His grandparents were farmers.

His whole life, his granddad raised tomatoes for Campbell Soup Co.” Scholarships and a Rotary Fellowship brought Dr. Lynn Croshaw to education, Florence, and Francis Marion University.

The Croshaws watched the university grow from just two buildings in 1970 into what it is today. Now, they will also help others pursue a biology degree at Francis Marion through the Dr. Lynn M. Croshaw Endowed Scholarship in memory of Croshaw’s legacy.

five are participating in spring 2023.

The students spend about 45 hours a semester performing their field research on weekends at Southern 8ths, Knowles said.

“The research projects are mentored by faculty members, but the students go up to his property, do a field study and present on it at the end of the semester,” Knowles said.

During the small-mammal study, Francis Marion University students learned field inventory techniques, including safety, data collection, handling and release. The students stayed overnight on the property, setting traps at dusk to capture rodents – mice, voles and rats – at night when they are most active.

The number of students going out and doing field research has declined, Knowles said.

“A lot of students don’t want to do much outside anymore,” he said.

The small-mammal study and a water-quality study will encourage students to go out in the field to conduct their research.

The FMU students set out humane live traps at night. When an animal is found, the students determine the species, place it in a clear bag to be weighed, measure, identify by gender and photograph it. The animal is released unharmed where it was found.

“On Sunday morning, we were able to catch another Eastern Harvest Mouse that we were able to measure and collect data from,” Tiller said. On his third weekend of trapping at Southern 8ths, Tiller said he watched a red-bellied woodpecker land on an old light pole.“It was a really cool experience to see such a beautiful bird that close and see all the details of its marking features,” Tiller wrote in a diary on the Carolina Wildlands Foundation website.

Turley said Tiller now is working part time at the Southern 8ths Farm and continuing to do field research.

Francis Marion University wants to expand its projects, Knowles said.

The university’s Freshwater Ecology Center could help train students to collect water samples and test water quality.

“I know there is some interest in the department here to get some water quality sampling – get a grant from him to do that on his property,” Knowles said. Turley said he has talked to Freshwater Ecology Center Director Dr. Jeffrey Steinmetz about the water quality research project.

The students would go to Southern 8ths Farm and test the water quality of Thompson Creek and its tributaries, Knowles said.

Turley came to South Carolina from Connecticut in 2007. He initially purchased some acreage in Cheraw and later purchased additional acreage in Chesterfield, S.C., ultimately growing the land of mixed hardwoods, pines, planted pines, creek frontage and ponds into what it is today. Turley grew up in the Philadelphia area, which also is part of the Piedmont ecoregion. The land in Chesterfield, S.C., reminded him of his youth.

“The more I started to enjoy nature, I realized there are not a lot of young people getting into the business. If you look at most of the naturalists

and scientists out there, they are baby boomers. They are older,” Turley said.

He established Southern 8ths Farm as a biological research station for universities and colleges in the region.

Francis Marion University President Dr. Fred Carter also talked with Turley.

“At Francis Marion, we continually look for ways to give our students experiential learning opportunities.

In fact, that's something that separates us from many other institutions," said Carter. "The generosity of Brad to give us access to an incredible place like Southern 8ths Farm allows our students to have real experience in field biology."

The Carolina Wildlands Foundation has collaborated with four universities – Francis Marion University, Winthrop University, Wingate University and Newberry College – on field research projects.

BUILDING BLOCKS

A COMING WAVE OF CONSTRUCTION WILL POSITION THE UNIVERSITY FOR YEARS TO COME. Over the past decade, Francis Marion University has added quite a few new buildings – the Carter Center, the Leatherman Medical Complex, the Honors Center, University Place, and the Freshwater Ecology Lab and Conference Center – but the building has only just begun as the university has recently embarked on the largest construction campaign in its 53-year history. All in all, over $80 million in new construction projects and renovations will transform the main campus over the coming years.

“It’s time,” says FMU President Fred Carter. “We have a beautiful campus, and we’ve been fortunate over the last two decades that our legislative delegation has worked diligently to acquire construction and renovation funding for us. We’ve also benefited from the generosity of other public and non-profit entities in developing programs, building new additions to the campus, and maintaining our infrastructure. Now we’re ready to take a major step and invest another $80-90M in capital construction over the next five years.”

All of the planned projects will be completed without incurring any major debt, something the university is particularly proud of. Only the $5 million renovation of the Smith University Center’s student activity and athletic space will be financed, and it will fall under the regime of an existing athletic bond. The upshot is that FMU will once again expand its physical facility without passing on indebtedness to future generations of Patriots.

“It has always been our goal to acquire construction funding outside the institution so that student tuition is not encumbered by these costs,” says Carter. “I think that we’ve been successful in accomplishing this over the years. That’s why our tuition remains one of the most affordable in South Carolina. New, contemporary buildings, with little debt, and the lowest tuition in the state. You know, that’s a formula that works for us, and more importantly, for our students and parents.”

THE PROJECTS School of Education and School of Business The largest of the new building projects is the 60,000-square foot

School of Education and School of Business building. This building is currently under construction and will be located beside the threefingered lake, across from the Lee Nursing Building. This new facility will house FMU’s oldest professional schools and include classrooms, an auditorium, office space, and gathering spaces. The building is expected to be completed and open for classes in the 2024-2025 academic year. It is funded by an appropriation from the State of South Carolina.

C. Edward Floyd Medical Consortium Building The C. Edward Floyd Medical Consortium Building will be added to FMU’s campus in downtown Florence. This space will be operated by FMU as part of the university’s role in the new Pee Dee Medical and Health Science Educational Consortium, an academic partnership between FMU, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina that was formed in 2020 with the purpose of expanding and establishing medical education and graduate health science

programs in the Pee Dee Region.

The facility will house academic facilities and office space to support undergraduate medical education (third- and fourth-year medical from MUSC and USC-School of Medicine), and other graduate health science programs under development. The building – FMU’s sixth major structure in downtown Florence – will be built at the site of the old Circle Park School on Cheves Street. The $21 million project is expected to be complete in Summer 2025, and is supported by the State of South Carolina, the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation, and the City of Florence. It’s named for Dr. C. Edward “Eddie” Floyd, a wellknown cardiologist in Florence and long-time friend of FMU. Engineering Workshop A $1 million Engineering Workshop will also be built on campus to provide space for technical and applied learning for FMU’s growing Department of Engineering and its Industrial and Mechanical Engineering programs. Industrialscale machinery will be housed in the building which will be built in the center of campus, sharing the parking lot for the Stanton Center for Technology.

Forestry and Environmental Sciences Building The final new building planned at this time is the Forestry and Environmental Sciences Building expected to open in 2025. This building will play a key part of the university’s array of innovative new programs in the environmental sciences. This $18 million facility will

include classrooms, offices, and an auditorium to support FMU’s new degree programs in environmental science and forestry. It will be built on the west side of Francis Marion Drive, just south of the Griffin Athletic Complex, near the existing South Carolina Department ofs Natural Resources office. A newly created lake will be built beside the structure.

RENOVATIONS Outside of the four new buildings, FMU is also initiating a series of projects that will renew and refresh core facilities across campus. Over $8 million has been assigned to major revitalization work at the Smith University Center, the Rogers Library, the McNair Science Building, the Leatherman Science Facility and Founders Hall; and more than $9 million is slated for upgrades to infrastructure.

The University Center, the largest and one of the busiest buildings on campus, will be dramatically renovated and refreshed, just as it turns 50 this year. The Smith Center is home to the FMU Athletic Department and serves as headquarters for student life at FMU. The university bookstore and the university health office are also located there. The $5 million renovation will be complete in fall 2023.

The McNair Science Building and the Leatherman Science Facility will receive new roofs and renovated restrooms. The first floor of the Rogers Library will get a new floor and new furnishings and other

enhancements. Similar work will take place at Founders Hall. Even while that work is taking place, the university is seeking an additional $9 million for a more comprehensive renovation of the building that houses the majority of FMU classes and faculty offices.

Renovation of FMU’s Village Apartments will continue while the university completes plans for a major overhaul of its student housing.

Work will also begin on FMU’s $9 million plan to refurbish campus parking lots and surface roads and to upgrade critical infrastructure across campus. Numerous projects are already approved and funded and will be completed by 2024. The university is still in the process of obtaining additional approvals and funding, but plenty is in the pipeline.

The work will unfold continuously, and comprehensively, transforming the FMU campus into a thoroughly modern layout that not only meets the needs of students today, but also for years to come.

“It’s great that so much will be done so quickly, creating new facilities for students that are in school right now,” says trustee Robert E. Lee (’87), chair of FMU’s Board of Trustees. “But the best part of these plans is the way they set up the university for the future. FMU is going to be in great shape for years to come.”

ROB AND SHANNON ARDIS PAY IT FORWARD WITH ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP Rob and Shannon Ardis’ lives were forever altered when they received scholarships to Francis Marion University.

Both grew up in rural Georgetown County and graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1994 at the top of their class–Shannon as Valedictorian and Rob as Salutatorian.

Shannon had a career plan laid out from her junior year of high school: graduate with a biology degree and pursue a graduate degree in physical therapy.

Rob’s path was not so straightforward. Knowing he did not have the means to pay tuition,

Rob applied for scholarships and looked into any program he could find that would allow him to get a degree. As enrollment time drew near, Rob thought his best option was an ROTC scholarship program that required four years of military service after graduation.

As fate would have it, in the last few months before college, Rob was awarded a full scholarship to Francis Marion University.

“I did a lot of worrying and praying,” Rob said. “And when I got the letter from Francis Marion, I realized I could go there without paying for tuition. So I said, ‘sign me up!’ It was awesome to have that opportunity.”

Rob and Shannon both arrived on campus in the fall of 1994 as first-generation college students.

Shannon stayed the course with her biology degree, while Rob took some time to weigh out all his options. After sampling various STEM majors, he eventually settled on double majoring in math and physics.

After graduating from Francis Marion in 1998, Rob went on to get an electrical engineering degree from the University of Tennessee.

Shannon continued down her planned path and obtained her graduate degree in physical therapy from East Carolina University.

After many years of hard work, Rob

is now the President and CEO of Santee Electric Cooperative, and Shannon practices physical therapy at Three Rivers Therapy Associates in Florence.

The Ardises hope that the scholarship will be the difference between attending and not attending college for the students that receive it.

The Ardises live in Florence and have two children, Cade and Ava, who have both expressed interest in engineering.

“I would like to see the scholarship help students who would not have the opportunity to go if not for the scholarship,” Rob said. “That’s how I think about Francis Marion. If not for this university, what would I be doing?”

Looking back on their journey together, Rob credits Francis Marion with getting him where he is in life today. The scholarship Rob received to Francis Marion put him on a path that led him not only to his successful career, but also to his family.

“I have no idea where I would have ended up if it had not been for Francis Marion,” Rob said. “That scholarship letter shaped my life.

Between that letter and meeting Shannon, those two things ended up making me who I am.”

It was that sentiment that led the Ardises to give back to Francis Marion University. Driven by the gratitude they both feel for the opportunities afforded them by Francis Marion, they chose to set up an endowed scholarship fund for first-generation students in the same majors they had.

In addition to Francis Marion’s affordability, the Ardises are also appreciative of the specialized attention and instruction they received.

“Francis Marion is an amazing place,” Rob said. “I had such a personal relationship with my professors. Because of the size of Francis Marion, you get so much one-on-one attention. I know it’s a cliché, but you’re not just a number.

It really feels that way here.”

The Rob & Shannon Ardis STEM Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to first-generation students who major in biology, math, physics or engineering, as well as meet financial need requirements. The legacy of this scholarship is to honor the Ardis’ spirit of pride in

Francis Marion and gratitude for all the success that resulted from their university experience.

FOUNDATION

The Francis Marion University Education Foundation was organized in 1974 to provide a means for soliciting and accepting substantial gifts of money or property in order to build an endowment fund that would promote the educational purpose and welfare of Francis Marion University.

Since then, the Foundation has enabled the University to meet a number of diverse needs, with a primary focus on scholarship support for students. Thousands of FMU graduates have benefited from this effort. The Foundation also assists faculty members with funds for professional development, and it sponsors various cultural events and lecture series.

The FMU Education Foundation is governed by a 35member volunteer board of directors with additional honorary and ex-officio directors, including the president of the university and other key administrators. Through its board and committee structure, the Foundation

gives friends and alumni a personal involvement in the fundraising and asset management program.

The Foundation is an independent, non-profit organization. Under IRS guidelines, the Education Foundation is classified as a private foundation operated for the benefit of a state university as defined in the IRS code of 1986 section 170 (B) 1 (A) (iv). Contributions to the University through the Education Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundation exists solely to raise, receive, and manage private gifts for the advancement and benefit of the University. It does not receive public funds such as state or federal grants.

Gifts to the Foundation fall into two categories: restricted and unrestricted. Restricted gifts can be directed to a certain scholarship, program, department, etc. while unrestricted gifts are used for University priorities, programs, and services not supported by state funds or other sources.
