We know that planning for college is a major financial decision for students and families. That’s why our Financial Assistance Office is here to support you every step of the way, helping you explore scholarships, grants, and other forms of aid to make your education as affordable as possible.
TYPES OF AID
At FMU, we know your education is invaluable, and we work hard to ensure your tuition reflects that commitment to value, stability, and opportunity.
To determine what financial assistance is available to you, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.studentaid.gov. The FAFSA collects information that will be analyzed for use by FMU’s Financial Assistance Office to determine the type(s) of assistance you qualify for. It is highly recommended that you and your parent(s) apply for a FSA ID before completing your FAFSA. FMU’s FAFSA code is 009226.
Once the FAFSA is complete, the Office of Financial Assistance will put together a financial aid package for you consisting of one or more types of aid.
There are a number of different types of loans available to students. Two terms to be aware of are subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Subsidized loans are need-based, while unsubsidized loans are not. In addition, the subsidized loan does not begin accruing interest until six months after students stop attending college, while unsubsidized loans begin accruing interest as soon as the loan begins.
FEDERAL WORK STUDY
Work study is need-based and allows students to work oncampus to receive federally subsidized pay.
GRANTS
Federal and state grants are available to students. Grants include the Pell Grant and SC Need-Based Grant.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Francis Marion offers hundreds of scholarships to help defray the costs of tuition for our students. All accepted first-time freshmen for the fall semester will be considered for meritbased scholarships, though some scholarship programs have specific applications.
SCHOLARSHIPS
MCNAIR SCHOLARSHIP
The McNair Scholarship is named for former South Carolina Governor Robert E. McNair. McNair was instrumental in the founding of Francis Marion University over fifty years ago. This scholarship covers a student’s full tuition, housing, and meal plan and also offers funding for a study abroad experience. McNair Scholars are members of FMU Honors and possess a strong interest in public service and pursuing a public service career. The McNair Scholarship application packet, including required essays and letters of recommendation, is due by December 1.
DARLA MOORE SCHOLARSHIP
The Darla Moore Scholarship is funded by a $5 million gift from the Darla Moore Foundation. This scholarship fully covers tuition. To be eligible, students must be South Carolina residents enrolling in full-time undergraduate studies and demonstrate a financial need based on FAFSA. Recipients of the Darla Moore Scholarship must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
ACADEMIC DISTINCTION SCHOLARSHIP
All first-time freshmen who are SC residents and enroll in the fall semester are considered for Academic Distinction scholarships. These awards are given in rounds, so early application completion is strongly encouraged. Students who are in the top 40% in their class, have scored at least an 1100 on the SAT or a 22 on the ACT, and have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA will automatically be awarded a minimum of $1,000 in merit-based aid.

The FMU First Generation Fund was designed to assist FMU students who are the first in their family to attend college. Students should apply for the First Generation scholarship through the Admissions Scholarship Application.
STATE SCHOLARSHIPS
FMU enrolls over 1,200 students annually who benefit from South Carolina’s Palmetto Fellows, LIFE, and HOPE scholarships. Individual students can work with school counselors in their high schools to apply for the state grants.
DONOR-SUPPORTED SCHOLARSHIPS
FMU also offers over 150 named, specialty scholarships. These awarded scholarships are available to all students, though many have specialized qualifying criteria, such as a particular field of study or specific hometown or home county. The application for these scholarships is due March 31 and can be found on the Financial Assistance webpage at www.fmarion.edu/ financialassistance/scholarships.
ADMISSIONS SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATION
Students seeking First Generation funds, transfer scholarship funds, out-of-state waivers, or any other Admissions scholarship that does not require a separate application are encouraged to apply. Academic scholarships are competitive, with class rank, cumulative weighted GPA, and SAT/ACT test scores strongly considered. Need-based scholarship support is based on federal need as indicated from the FAFSA review. Students with strong academic profiles will be given preference for need-based scholarship support.
The first step in determining what types of financial assistance may be available to you is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at studentaid.gov FMU’s FAFSA code is 009226.
