Stronger By Design: Building a Community

T

he Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) continues to stand as a pillar of support and advocacy for Canada’s franchising industry. This report offers an opportunity to reflect on how we have supported these goals in the past year.

Throughout 2025, our collective efforts have fostered growth, innovation, and resilience—and none of this would have been possible without the dedicated commitment and hard work of the CFA’s staff and the hundreds of CFA member volunteers.

In the past two years as Chair of the CFA’s Board of Directors, I have seen this growth and resilience firsthand. It has been an honour to serve in this position, and I’m grateful for the experience, particularly the opportunities I’ve had to connect with other CFA members. As I move into my role as Past Chair, I am reflecting on the achievements of the past two years. This Accomplishments Report is a testament to all the CFA has done to help its members grow, develop professionally, and increase awareness of franchising in Canada and around the world.

A key accomplishment directly tied to our goals has been the expansion of our educational programming, including the launch of new education workshops, evening education series, and the soon-to-be-launched micro-credential courses, which will provide valuable tools to our members. Our community is made up of franchise professionals committed to the pursuit of excellence, and the growth of our educational programs is evidence of that commitment. 2025 saw a total of 400 hours of education provided by the CFA! The Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) program (see more on page 18) has also continued to grow—in fact, this year I’m proud to be counting myself among the CFE program graduates.

Finally, we’ve also seen more ways for brands to increase their profile through the CFA’s advertising products and Public Relations (PR) efforts. And through initiatives like World Franchise Day, Franchisee Appreciation Month, and Franchise Awareness month, we’ve worked to raise the profile of franchising as a whole. We’ve continued to up our audience making 5.1 million impressions on social media in 2025!

In addition to those valuable pillars, in my time as Board Chair, it has also been important to me that our community be representative of franchising. In 2025, this community expanded, as the CFA welcomed nearly 100 new member brands this year. There is no greater power than the power of people coming together. That’s a foundational idea central to franchising, and the proof of that idea exists throughout our community. I’ve had the immense honour of seeing it firsthand, over and over and over again, in my role as Chair. Every milestone we’ve hit, every accomplishment we’ve achieved, has not been the result of one individual effort. It has resulted from the power of our community and the efforts of all of you.

We are truly stronger together, and I’m stronger having had the opportunity to experience the power of our community.

It has truly been an honour to serve this community as Chair, and I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made together. I’m so pleased with what we’ve accomplished, and I’m excited for the future we have made possible for the CFA.

We’ve also continued to play the important role of advocating on behalf of our industry. Through joint letter submissions and consultations on major legislation including the federal budget, Ontario’s Arthur Wishart Act, the CanadaUnited States-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA), and Saskatchewan’s new franchise legislation, the CFA has helped ensure franchising in Canada stays strong—and gets stronger.

A Future Filled with Opportunity

I

learned about the power of franchising when I signed my first franchise agreement at the age of 20. Ever since then, franchising has been my education. Franchising taught me how to run a business successfully, but it also taught me about the importance of teamwork, and being part of something bigger than myself. In short, about community.

The CFA also continued its advocacy work in 2025, advancing and protecting the franchise business model in Canada. This led to high-level meetings with government officials as well as campaigns to raise awareness of franchising in the general population, through efforts like Franchise Awareness Month and Small Business Month.

Community is one of the pillars of the CFA’s strategic plan, and one you’ll see reflected in the pages of this report. When we look back on the CFA’s work over the past year, it becomes clear how strong of a community we are.

In promoting franchising and CFA member brands through its brand awareness initiatives, the CFA also generated a total of 254 million impressions through both digital and traditional media outlets. Through these various channels, this year the CFA generated more than 657,560 leads for member brands.

We celebrated 113 of our members winning a combined 138 CFA Awards in 2025. We saw double-digit increases in registration for flagship events such as Franchise Law Day, Franchising Meets the Money, and the Golf for Advocacy Tournament. And of course, we marked the first-ever World Franchise Day on June 11 and showed off our community to the world, garnering more than 1 million social media impressions and nearly 22 million traditional media impressions.

It is exciting to reflect on what we accomplished together in 2025, and as I move into the Chair role in 2026, I hope to continue to support this work. When all our members work together—franchisors, franchisees, private equity, suppliers, and more—we collectively benefit and “Grow Together”.

This could not have been done without a smart strategic plan and a deep commitment to the execution of that plan.

As I step into the Chair role on the CFA’s Board of Directors for the 2025/2026 term, I want to uphold that commitment, and encourage all of our CFA members, staff, and volunteers to keep pushing forward—to be bold, think bigger, and to position the Canadian franchise community as the best in the world.

Education is the foundation for our future success. One of the keys to investing in education is investing in the CFE, or Certified Franchise Executive program. As the provider of CFE certification in Canada, the CFA is well-positioned to educate those in our industry on why franchise education matters, and spread this gold standard of franchise professional development across the country. As this report shows, we are well on our way—in 2025, the CFA offered 5,750 CFE credits across its many high-quality educational events.

Investing in Our Community

A

n annual report is an important document. It offers a chance to stop and reflect on activities of the past year, to see what we accomplished and to recognize the changes, the big swings, and the triumphs we sometimes miss in the day to day. It’s also a chance to look forward. Where do we want to grow? What challenges and opportunities await in the next year?

While we can never know exactly what the future will hold, we do know that it looks bright for franchising.

Recent research shows that Canadians today are eager to go into business for themselves, and that they are looking to franchising to do so. According to Reshift Media’s annual search trend report, interest in franchising has spiked, with Google Trends showing a 110 per cent year over year increase in search terms for franchise opportunities.

Meanwhile, our annual Franchise Forecast report, produced in partnership with the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis (CANCEA) shows that franchising is not slowing down.

Last year, our Franchise Forecast report estimated that the franchise industry in Canada would be worth $133.3 billion by the end of the year. In reality, our industry exceeded this goal, contributing $143.3 billion to the country’s GDP by 2026. And the outlook for 2027 is bright, with the industry forecasted to grow to nearly $150 billion.

The time is ripe for franchising. But it’s not a coincidence. As members of the CFA community know, franchising is a business model built for resilience and shared success. Franchising is made—by design—for strength and growth.

This past year, the CFA, as always, worked to support this growth, to protect and strengthen the franchise industry in Canada.

Much of that work was supported by the generous volunteer work done by our members. In 2025, more than 450 volunteers participated in committees, contributed content to our publications and podcasts, worked at our events, and otherwise gave their time and energy as ambassadors of what our organization stands for. We offer heartfelt thanks to these franchise champions for their efforts this year! The full list of volunteers is recognized on page 36.

hosted a whopping 71 educational events this year (a 40 per cent increase over 2024), featuring more than 400 speakers who shared their knowledge with CFA members.

On the advocacy front, Franchise Awareness Day on May 29 broke a record for most ministerial meetings, with 14 meetings with Ontario ministers, including the Premier. We also contributed a record 17 submissions and letters to government on topics of great importance to our industry.

The CFA’s reach continues to grow, as our brand awareness efforts have made great strides in 2025. Our social media presence grew to more than 27,450 followers, a 12 per cent increase over 2024. Our social impressions grew by an impressive 68 per cent, totalling more than 5.1 million impressions! We also continued our PR efforts, resulting in more than 247.9 million media impressions.

In 2025, we launched our Look for the Logo campaign, which emphasizes the importance for prospective franchisees of choosing a CFA member brand on their franchising journey. As a CFA member, you’ve shown your commitment to excellence and to ethical franchising by signing on to the CFA’s Code of Ethics. Display your CFA member logo proudly, on your website, advertising materials, and tradeshow booths.

Finally, another highlight of 2025 was the first-ever World Franchise Day (WFD), which took place in June. This worldwide day of recognition and celebration began as an idea that grew into reality through the hard work of CFA staff, Reshift Media, the World Franchise Day CFA subcommittee, and the World Franchise Council sub-committee, as well as everyone who participated. Read more in this report about how the first WFD made an impact, and what you can do to celebrate the second World Franchise Day on June 10, 2026!

As we look to the year ahead, it’s important to remember the CFA’s role as a member organization. Everything we do is in support of our members, and your membership is an investment in the development and growth of you personally and your brand. To all of you who continue to strive for success in this industry, we look forward to Growing Together this year and beyond.

Our education initiatives continued strong in 2025. Weekly Learn & Grow webinars drew more than 2,000 attendees eager to strengthen their business through learning. The Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) program also reached new heights, with 5,750 credits offered last year, a more than 26 per cent increase over 2024. This year, we introduced a Franchise Development Day, a brand-new workshop event held in Ontario and British Columbia, designed to help franchisors grow—faster, smarter, and more strategically. Executive Summary: Recent Accomplishments The Canadian Franchise Association (CFA) has spent the past year continuing to fulfill its purpose of helping everyday Canadians realize the dream of building their own business through the power of franchising. In 2025, each step taken sought to amplify the power and understanding of Canada’s franchise industry by strengthening and advocating on its behalf, growing the CFA member community, and connecting Canadians with franchise opportunities.

In 2025 that meant working with our CFA community to adapt to the current economic landscape in Canada and to prepare for the next changes that will shape the future of franchising. The CFA’s strategic plan, encompassing the pillars of community, education, advocacy, and brand awareness, is being applied at every level of the organization to help us better serve our members and the industry as a whole.

In reading this report, you’re invited to join the CFA in celebrating the “firsts,” the records broken, the goals exceeded, and the work done in the last year. The key developments and accomplishments in 2025 centred around growing our community of members, delivering learning opportunities, advocating on issues that impact franchising, and bringing more Canadians into the franchising fold. Below you’ll see an overview of the ways in which our key pillars inspired us to further our impacts this year.

Community (Membership & Networking) The CFA is always striving to grow our membership and create opportunities for our members to connect. This past year, we provided our members with new programs and benefits, set up opportunities for them to share experiences and learn from one another, and developed strategic partnerships to help address the needs of CFA community members.

CFA FIRSTS

Created opportunities to connect. In-person networking events provided CFA members the opportunity to meet and connect with one another. Five Meet & Greet events were held across the country in Ontario, British Columbia, and Atlantic Canada, allowing more than 325 registrants to meet face to face in both formal and casual settings. The annual CFA Golf for Advocacy Tournament was another smashing success, selling out tickets with more than 144 members gathering at the Royal Ontario Golf Club in Milton, Ontario. The CFA also brought together franchise system founders, presidents, and CEOs in the closed-door setting of the CEO Circle; they discussed pertinent issues and forged deeper connections among Canadian franchisors.

Celebrated the launch of the FIRST-ever World Franchise Day on June 11, 2025, at the CFA office and online

Celebrated franchise excellence. 2025 CFA awards program winners were celebrated at the Recognition Awards Luncheon and Awards Gala, held at CFA National Convention in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and highlighted in our CFA publications.

FIRST launch of revamped strategies for new member onboarding and ongoing member engagement within the CFA’s Membership team

Welcomed new members. The CFA Member Onboarding committee educated new members about the CFA and its offerings through monthly onboarding webinars. While welcoming 50 new franchise brands and 49 new support service/supplier members to our community in 2025, the CFA membership team fielded inquiries from 462 contacts interested in membership.

Enhanced digital member experience. First launched in 2023, the CFA improved integration of the CFA Community App with events software to share agendas, speaker profiles, session content, and more. The app has been downloaded by more than 1,133 members since its inception. Franchise Voice and Members Only Area content has also been shared to the app for easy access.

Deepened strategic partnerships. In 2025 the CFA continued its work with the World Franchise Council, collaborating with franchise associations from across the world to shape the community of franchising on a global stage. This work saw the launch of the first annual World Franchise Day, celebrated internationally in 65 countries on the second Wednesday of June.

The CFA also formed a new partnership with Elite Franchise Canada, becoming the Official Awards Supporter of the EF100 Awards, and deepened ongoing strategic partnerships with the International Franchise Association (IFA), MVF Global, Global Franchise magazine, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) and the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) as well.

Told the stories of our members. The CFA profiled and promoted our member brands this year through the Franchise Canada Chats podcast (hosting a record number of 15 episodes), online videos, exclusive web content, Franchise Canada magazine features, and marketing campaigns.

From franchisee success stories to promoting member brand opportunities, we ensured our members’ voices were heard.

Education The CFA is committed to providing our members with the tools and information they need for franchise success. To maximize franchising knowledge and prepare for what the future will bring in the franchise industry, educational products, resources, and events provide our members with everything from expert insights to facilitated peer-to-peer support and opportunities to share best practices.

Enhanced the scope of our in-person events. The CFA introduced Franchise Development Day (FDD), a one-day learning and networking event held in Toronto and Vancouver, geared towards franchise system growth. Other in-person events with educational programming: the CFA National Convention, Marketing & Operations Day, Franchise Law Day, and Franchising Meets the Money, all saw an increase in registration from 2024, allowing more members to gather and connect through educational sessions.

CFA FIRSTS Launched FIRST Franchise Development Day events in Toronto and Vancouver Expanded Fran-Guard to the East Coast and Pacific Coast for the FIRST time

Increased our digital education offerings. Our Learn & Grow webinar series intensified its offerings and reach with 45 sessions (a 73 per cent increase from 2024), 69 speakers, and 2,000+ registrations. Helped business owners consider franchising. The Franchise Your Business (FYB) seminars continued in 2025 with 78 registrations across four events. These seminars produced 20+ hours of content, educating small business owners on what it takes to turn a thriving business into a successful franchise system.

Partnered with higher education. Strengthening the talent pipeline for future franchise professionals, the CFA increased its partnership with Humber College, supporting the microcredential Foundations of Franchising course, and delivered franchising workshops to Durham College students.

Topped more than 2,000 registration for weekly Learn & Grow webinars for the FIRST time

Continued the growth of our CFE program. The “Canadianized” version of the Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) program, licensed from the International Franchise Association, has reached more than 230 active participants and celebrated the achievements of 80+ graduates since launching in 2021. The CFA also expanded the delivery of the Fran-Guard program from two to four sessions held across Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax.

Offered educational events after hours. The Evening Education Series continued its afterhours CFE-accredited programming with five workshops reaching nearly 100 participants.

Advocacy The CFA continues to empower the franchise industry by advocating to the provincial and federal governments for policies that protect and strengthen franchising in Canada. The economic impact of franchising cannot be understated, and the CFA’s programs, contributions, and recommendations ensure that those holding power across the country recognize its value.

Held key meetings with government representatives across Canada. The CFA hosted its 2025 Franchise Awareness Day in May, meeting with 19 Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and senior staff to lobby on behalf of the franchise community. World Franchise Day in June allowed the CFA and its members to engage with 21 elected officials, including the Premier of Ontario.

Contributed joint letters to educate and advise government decision-makers. Through joint letter campaigns with other industry associations, the CFA communicated with government officials on issues with the potential to impact the franchising industry. This includes urging the Government of Ontario to strategize investment in the post-secondary sector and calling on the Federal Minister of Jobs & Families to amend the Canada Labour Code.

Secured unprecedented ministerial engagement at Franchise Law Day. For the first time, the CFA welcomed the Hon. Stephen Crawford, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery, as a keynote speaker at the 2025 Franchise Law Day. This marked a significant milestone given the Minister’s direct responsibility for the Arthur Wishart Act and franchise disclosure legislation in Ontario.

Strengthened engagement at the highest level of Ontario government. In 2025, the CFA achieved a major first by meeting with a sitting Premier, the Hon. Doug Ford, reinforcing the Association’s standing as the voice of franchising. Premier Ford also supported the launch of the inaugural World Franchise Day by sharing a video message, amplifying national visibility for the sector.

Advanced advocacy for modernized franchise disclosure legislation. Senior leaders from across the franchise community, including the CFA’s Past Chair, First Vice Chair, LLAC Chair, and Policy Chair, met directly with Minister Crawford to advocate for updates to Ontario’s franchise disclosure framework, reinforcing the CFA’s leadership role in shaping policy that supports a fair and modern franchising environment.

Strengthened CFA’s government relations capacity. In 2025, the CFA reconstituted the Government Relations Committee to ensure stronger, more diverse representation by region, industry sector, and franchise size, enhancing the Association’s ability to effectively advocate on behalf of members nationwide.

Launched the CFA Policy Committee to deepen member engagement in advocacy. The newly established committee empowers members to play a direct role in policy development, submissions, and advocacy letters, significantly strengthening the CFA’s influence with government decision makers.

Delivered a first of its kind ministerial tour during Franchisee Appreciation Month. For the first time, the CFA organized an on-the-ground tour for Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business, spotlighting franchised small businesses and creating a direct opportunity for the Minister to engage with franchisees, hear their experiences firsthand, and better understand the real-world impact of franchising on local communities.

Was recognized as an industry leader during Small Business Month. The CFA was invited to the Toronto Stock Exchange to help celebrate the conclusion of Small Business Month alongside Ontario’s Associate Minister of Small Business, underscoring the Association’s leadership role and visibility as a trusted voice for franchised small businesses.

CFA FIRSTS FIRST year that the CFA team and members met with 14 Ministers of Provincial Cabinet during Franchise Awareness Day—including the Premier of Ontario Successfully advocated for amendments to Saskatchewan’s FIRST franchise legislation Made an impact on elected officials during the FIRST World Franchise Day, engaging more than 20 government representatives for visits as part of the celebration FIRST time meeting with a sitting Premier to advocate on behalf of the franchise industry.

Acting as a voice for CFA members across Canada, the CFA consulted on the re-negotiation of the CanadaUnited States-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA) emphasizing the potential impacts and consequences on franchised business owners and calling for relevant protections.

Shared the success stories of everyday Canadians through franchising. During Franchise Awareness Month in June, the CFA emphasized our members’ economic contributions and impacts in Canadian communities. Franchise Awareness Month shared information about and celebrated the benefits of the franchise sector, resulting in almost 100,000 social media impressions.

Kept CFA members in the know. The CFA sent out 51 advocacy updates to members in 2025, keeping them up to date on current affairs, legal developments, and political and economic news, while sharing other relevant resources with our engaged audience of franchisors.

Brand Awareness Part of the CFA’s mission is to educate the general public about the benefits of franchising and connect prospective franchisees with the many opportunities available. In 2025 we continued this work through Franchise Canada magazine and our award-winning e-newsletter, our nationally recognized podcast, and our widely followed social media accounts. These mediums connected the CFA with our readers to inform, educate, and forge connections between the general public and the franchising community.

Brand awareness also extends to increasing the industry’s understanding of the value of CFA membership, aiding our pursuit to grow out membership and promote the Association on national and international levels. Through magazine and website content, social media, tradeshows, podcast episodes, videos, and public relations efforts, we continued to promote franchising and raise awareness of the industry’s opportunities for Canadians to realize their dream of business ownership.

Promoted franchising to those seeking self-employment opportunities. Through Franchise Canada content, social media, public relations (PR) work, and educational seminars, the CFA educated our audience about the franchise business model, highlighting its strength and resilience.

Shared franchisee success stories. We highlighted the stories of Canadian franchisees who are continuing to find success in the pages of Franchise Canada magazine. Our exclusive web content, social media platforms, the Franchise Canada Chats podcast, and Franchise Canada TV videos also allowed us to reach new and diverse audiences.

Generated visibility for our CFA members. Through all our brand awareness properties, we provided 657,565 leads to our CFA members. Our publications, online presence, and awareness initiatives highlighted CFA member brands to a public eager for entrepreneurship.

Grew our general public audience. We reached an audience of more than 4.9 million prospective franchisees through our brand awareness program, a 500 per cent increase from 2024. Accomplishments in Detail Community (Membership & Networking) Community is the cornerstone of the CFA, and what makes the CFA’s work possible. Every year, the Association continues to develop and maintain this community through membership acquisition and programming that helps our members forge relationships, learn from one another, and grow together.

This past year, the CFA helped foster these relationships by hosting in-person networking events like Meet & Greets, the annual Golf For Advocacy tournament, the CEO Circle, and coming together to celebrate World Franchise Day. We hosted our largest gathering of members for the 2025 CFA National Convention in Niagara Falls, continued our international work with the World Franchise Council, and established new strategic partnerships that will keep strengthening the franchising community in Canada.

Meet & Greet Events Several Meet & Greet events held over 2025 offered members the chance to build connections while learning from experts on timely topics in franchising. Held in both casual and formal settings, these networking events offered attendees the chance to share their recent experiences and future goals, from challenges facing their industry to opportunities on the horizon, all while celebrating the successes of fellow CFA members.

CEO Circle On November 13, executives of CFA franchise system members came together in a closeddoor setting to discuss critical issues facing their businesses, gain valuable insight into the future of franchising, and forge stronger relationships with franchisor leaders from across Canada.

Taking place at Louix Louis restaurant at the St. Regis Toronto, the event hosted founders, presidents, and CEOs who networked with other industry executives and learned about trending topics in franchising, including legal, economic, and government relations updates from industry experts. The event also featured keynote fireside chats with David Druker, CFE, of The UPS Store Canada, Mark Cunningham of Smoke’s Poutinerie, and Jim Treliving of Boston Pizza International Inc.

CFA Golf for Advocacy Tournament The sun was bright on June 24, 2025, and more than 144 CFA members braved the heat to join the annual Golf for Advocacy Tournament at Royal Ontario Golf Club, with 170 registrants joining for a post-tourney dinner. In fact, the event sold out, with a 37.5 per cent increase in registration over 2024! The day of fun on the fairway was made possible by 32 generous sponsors, including presenting sponsor Smoke’s Poutinerie and Hole-in-One sponsor Insuranceland Inc., who offered a whopping $50,000 prize.

Exclusive to CFA franchisor members and industry suppliers, the annual tournament is designed to help franchise leaders make business connections and enjoy friendly competition, all while supporting the CFA’s advocacy work. Turn to page 19 to find out more about the CFA’s advocacy initiatives.

Members Only Area and CFA Community App Since launching the CFA Community App in 2023, we’ve been able to enhance member experience, with information on CFA events, educational content, and more, right in members’ pockets!

Improved integration with events software has allowed the CFA to share event agendas, speaker profiles, session content, and more through the app for our many member-focused events, including in-app messaging and a scavenger hunt administered through the app at the 2025 Convention. Since its launch, the app has been downloaded by more than 1,133 CFA members on both iOS and Android devices!

The app also contains content from our Franchise Voice brand, available in the Members Only Area of CFA.ca. Follow along to see the latest news impacting the franchise industry, updates on franchise legislation, best practices from legal experts, and insights from other members just like you.

Accomplishments in Detail Education Educating members on the franchise industry remains one of the CFA’s core strategic pillars, and in the past year the CFA has significantly expanded both the volume and reach of education opportunities available to members and the broader business community.

Building on a strong schedule of live events and flagship programming, the CFA continued to deliver meaningful learning through major conferences and sector-specific events, while also expanding accessible, high-frequency education through our digital offerings. Weekly Learn & Grow virtual sessions remained a key driver of member value and professional development, growing to over 45 sessions covering topics including franchise operations, finance, legal updates, marketing, and leadership.

The CFA also grew its structured CFE-accredited workshop programming, expanding the Evening Education Series to offer five sessions over the year, supporting ongoing professional development in a format designed to be accessible to working professionals. In addition, the CFA introduced a new half-day workshop format and launched Franchise Development Day (FDD), delivered in both Toronto and Vancouver, providing members with a targeted peer-driven learning experience focused on growth and franchise development.

Beyond member education, the CFA expanded its role in building franchising awareness and understanding across broader audiences. This included delivering webinars introducing the fundamentals of franchising which featured CFA member brands and franchise organizations, providing workshops to Durham College students, and working in partnership with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce to promote Franchise Your Business webinars supporting entrepreneurship and business growth.

CFA National Convention The CFA National Convention, which brings together the entire CFA community and the most elite franchise minds from across the industry, continued to expand in 2025 with high-quality educational offerings.

The industry gathered in Niagara Falls for the three-day conference, themed “Stronger Together,” and showed that strength through a myriad of learning and networking opportunities. In plenary addresses, roundtable sessions, concurrent sessions, and peer networking opportunities, members delved into topics including lead nurturing, effective scaling, legal updates, marketing for franchise brands, and many more. Attendees also learned from keynote addresses by AI expert Ford Saeks, the family behind Osmow’s Shawarma, and CFL star Michael “Pinball” Clemons.

Expand Your Brand Into Canada The CFA's educational program to inform franchisors about everything they need to know when expanding internationally continued strong in 2025, with six online webinar sessions featuring experts from a range of industries, from legal and finance to government and franchise consulting. These helpful sessions showcased the strength of Canada's franchising industry and connected franchisors with best practices and expert knowledge. In 2026, the CFA will be expanding this program with sessions for Canadian franchisors looking to expand internationally.

Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) Certification Program The Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) Program continued to build momentum and reach new milestones, now exceeding 230 active participants and over 80 graduates, demonstrating continued demand for structured, accredited professional development within Canada’s franchise community.

The program’s core component, the Canadian version of the Fran-Guard program, also expanded regionally, with in-person workshops held in Toronto, Vancouver, and Halifax, in addition to the eLearning course offering, further strengthening access to foundational franchise education nationwide and supporting consistency in franchise compliance and operational excellence across markets.

The CFE Program continues to be an exciting, attractive opportunity for upskilling in the Canadian franchise industry.

Accomplishments in Detail Advocacy The CFA’s Advocacy team is the first line of defence in protecting and advancing franchising in Canada. It monitors government regulations, programs, and announcements and engages with elected officials from coast to coast to coast to ensure they are informed about the benefits of franchising.

This work continued in 2025, as the advocacy team worked tirelessly to ensure decision makers at all levels of government understand the franchise business model and the important role it plays in supporting the country’s economy and the livelihoods of the nearly two million Canadians who are employed by franchised businesses.

Through both in-person and virtual meetings with government representatives, the CFA continues to emphasize our value within the halls of power across Canada. We held the fifth annual Franchise Awareness Day on May 28, a unique opportunity for members of the franchise community to connect directly with Ministers, MPPs, and senior government staff to discuss issues that matter most to franchised small businesses—and to advocate for policy changes that will help our industry grow and thrive.

CFA members held 19 meetings with elected officials and senior staff at Queens Park, 14 of which were with ministers, including the Premier of Ontario and Ontario’s Minister of Finance. These conversations were purpose-driven, focusing on how franchising creates jobs, drives local investment, and provides aspiring entrepreneurs with pathways to business ownership.

Throughout the year, the CFA and its members engaged with the federal and provincial governments through pre-budget consultations, opposition to proposed capital gains inclusion rate changes, joint letters addressing CUSMA trade negotiations, and more. The CFA also continued its work with the Government of Saskatchewan; the Saskatchewan Franchises Act goes into effect in 2026.

KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS Joint Letters Over the course of 2025, the CFA worked with other industry associations to send joint letters on behalf of the business community in Canada. Through these letters, the CFA urged the Government of Ontario to prioritize strategic investment in the post-secondary sector as a cornerstone of its broader economic development strategy, and called on the Federal Minister of Jobs and Families to amend the Canada Labour Code to prevent the causes of prolonged strikes that shut down British Columbia ports in 2023 and 2024 from happening again.

CUSMA Renegotiation In November 2025, the CFA provided federal consultation on the re-negotiation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA). Acting as a voice for CFA members across Canada, the CFA provided feedback on the Agreement’s renegotiation, emphasizing concerns about the potential consequences of a prolonged trade dispute for franchised small business. The CFA called for a balanced approach to tariffs and low-value trade thresholds, which will help protect Canadian jobs, consumer choice, and local investment across the country.

Franchise Awareness Month In June 2025, the CFA highlighted member franchisees in our Franchise Awareness Month campaign. Emphasizing franchisees’ roles as local small business owners, we focused on their community and economic contributions. Throughout the month, we drove this key messaging about franchising via social media and the CFA’s weekly email campaigns.

Franchise Awareness Month helped to raise awareness among all Canadians about the franchise industry, by sharing success stories about franchisees, celebrating the philanthropy that franchisees provide to their communities, educating the public about various franchise sectors, and more.

Franchise Awareness Day in Ontario

What’s on the Agenda for 2026

Franchise Awareness Day 2025 took place on May 28 at Queen’s Park in Toronto, Ontario. The CFA met with 19 Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and senior staff to raise awareness of the franchise business model and the importance of the franchisee-franchisor relationship, and to lobby for the franchise business community. Some of the issues the CFA brought to the attention of these elected officials included clarification surrounding common/joint employer, the changing workforce, and the regulatory burdens on small business.

As ever, the CFA continues to defend and advance the franchise business model across Canada. In 2026, this includes meeting with officials in the federal government during Franchise Awareness Day, taking place April 14, 2025, at Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Accomplishments in Detail Brand Awareness Another key pillar of the CFA’s strategic plan is Brand Awareness. It is the CFA’s goal to continually increase public awareness, not only of CFA member brands, but of the franchise business model in general.

In 2025, the CFA continued this brand awareness mission, helping our members emphasize their standing in Canada’s business landscape, and further ingratiating them in the minds of Canadian entrepreneurs as stable, lucrative opportunities. A key component of this has been the Look for the Logo campaign, officially launched in April 2025, which helps build trust and awareness in the general public of the CFA’s role as the voice of Canadian franchising, and of every CFA member brand as a franchise system committed to ethical franchising.

The CFA also produced a range of valuable resources, content, and tools under the Franchise Canada banner in 2025, to help prospective franchisees find the right franchise opportunity for them and successfully launch their franchise business. Franchise Canada products continued to play a key role in increasing awareness of franchising and CFA member brands to prospective franchisees, making a total of 6.2 million digital impressions. The Franchise Canada Shows in Toronto and Vancouver brought our member brands face to face with the next class of educated, engaged franchisees. And their passion for content extends to the digital realm as well. Videos on the CFA’s YouTube channel received more thank 9.8K views, with viewers watching 333 hours of content in 2025. In addition, our primary newsletter, Franchise Canada E-News, was received over 456,950 times, and was honoured with a National Magazine Award: B2B. We shared the stories of our member brands and connected our audience with franchise opportunities, through dedicated E-Blasts, Franchise Canada E-News, and social media, reaching more than 70,000 subscribers.

Through social media, the CFA’s digital presence grew in 2025, leading to a 12 per cent increase in followers and a 68 per cent increase in impressions. Campaigns for Franchise Awareness Month, Small Business Month, Franchisee Appreciation Month, and the Franchise Canada Show enhanced our digital presence by positively reflecting the value and success of local franchisees across Canada. Our public relations (PR) efforts focused on increasing awareness about the franchise business model and the role it plays in local communities, resulting in more than 247.9 million positive media impressions.

Soft-launched in 2024, the Look for the Logo campaign was fully launched at the CFA National Convention in April 2025. Aimed at a general public and prospective franchisee audience, the campaign highlights the advantages of choosing a CFA member when investigating franchise opportunities, educating Canadian entrepreneurs on what CFA membership means.

When you see a CFA member logo, you’re seeing the sign of a brand that has signed on to the CFA’s Code of Ethics, and showcased a commitment to ethical business practices and excellence in franchising. All CFA members should make sure to prominently display their logo on all websites, advertising, print materials, and tradeshow booths, to state this commitment loud and proud.

LookforaFranchise.ca Throughout 2025, the CFA continued to elevate LookForaFranchise.ca—our official online franchise directory—to enhance the user experience and visibility for advertising brands on the website. With listings for each CFA member, a direct link that captures interested leads, and the ability to search by brand, industry, investment level, and more, LookForaFranchise.ca continues to grow and serve as a valuable brand awareness tool for CFA members. In 2025, the site generated an average of 23,000 unique page views per month—that’s a lot of potential franchisees!

Franchise Canada magazine & Franchise Canada Online Published six times per year, Franchise Canada magazine is a publication of the CFA, sharing the success stories, news, and in-depth profiles of our members to an audience of engaged prospective franchisees. In 2025, Franchise Canada continued to share valuable educational content and entertaining editorial on topics like the trends shaping our industry, diversity in franchising, brand categories on the rise, and franchising resiliency.

Each issue of Franchise Canada magazine is published on FranchiseCanada.Online and promoted to the CFA’s 27,000-plus social media followers. New issues and digital features are also promoted through Franchise Canada E-News. This year, focused attention to our E-News subscriber list resulted in growth of more than 34 per cent, and the industry took notice: our E-News was awarded Gold in the 2025 National Magazine Awards: B2B for Best Editorial Newsletter!

Digital flipbooks of Franchise Canada are available on Issuu, where we saw an 18 per cent increase in readership over 2024. Media Relations

In 2025, Franchise Canada Chats continued its mission of introducing the world to experts and local franchise owners in the Canadian franchise industry. Hosted by Renée Boudakian, Season 9 of Franchise Canada Chats dug deep into the dayto-day experience of franchisees, with 15 episodes featuring in-depth interviews with franchisees who shared their successes, challenges, and stories of brand support. Franchise Canada Chats was recognized as a finalist for Best Podcast at the 2025 National Magazine Awards: B2B, showcasing the excellence of our podcast among the wider industry of business-to-business media and services. Look out for season 10 of Franchise Canada Chats in Fall 2026!

In 2025, the CFA continued to express itself as the leading voice of Canada’s franchise industry, by focusing on promoting the benefits of franchising to the general public. The CFA generated 247.9 million positive media impressions through 487 media stories during its 2025 fiscal year.

6,838 Plays 430 Hours of listening Franchise Canada TV As we provide our audience with more ways to interact with and learn from our range of excellent member brands, throughout 2025 we captured valuable conversations with CFA members on video. From podcast clips to videos showcasing the importance of Franchisee Appreciation to celebrations for Canada Day and Pride, we grew our YouTube presence.

In 2025, Franchise Canada TV (FCTV) generated 131,160 impressions, a 74 per cent increase over 2024. Viewers watched FCTV for a total of 333.2 hours, with videos collecting nearly 10,000 views.

Franchise Canada Shows The CFA brought its Franchise Canada Show back to Toronto and Vancouver for another successful year of connecting franchise brands with people looking for opportunities in person. Across three shows, prospective small business owners had the opportunity to speak with 119 exhibitors and attend 54 educational sessions. The Ask the Expert roundtables also introduced future franchisees to established leaders in the space, allowing them to glean information on topics including financing for franchisees, navigating the path toward franchise ownership, and what to consider when evaluating franchises. By facilitating these roundtables, our members demonstrate their leadership among the wider franchise community by sharing their expertise with the public.

These impressive impressions were driven by the promotion of the CFA Awards Programs and its winners and promotion of World Franchise Day—stories that were picked up in local media outlets across the country. Participation in media stories educating the general public about the franchise business model, and expressing franchising as an opportunity for new Canadians, as well as the contributions of franchisees to their local communities drove additional success through the campaigns.

2026 ACCOMPLISHMENTS REPORT / World Franchise Day

In February 2025, the World Franchise Council (WFC)—a global organization of franchise associations—officially declared the second Wednesday in June annually as World Franchise Day. This global initiative recognizes the contributions of franchisees as small business owners in their communities, and the major economic impact that franchising has locally, nationally, and worldwide.

The initiative began CFA President and CEO Sherry McNeil, and then the CFA team, which brought the concept to WFC meetings in November 2024. The CFA team worked collaboratively with Reshift Media and key stakeholders at the CFA and WFC to establish the event, including creating a launch plan and marketing assets to ensure coordinated celebrations throughout the world for the first-ever World Franchise Day in June 2025.

And what a day that was! June 11, 2025, saw franchisees, franchisors, support services/suppliers, and government officials from across the world celebrating the wonders of franchising.

At the CFA offices, members and CFA staff convened to honour the occasion—cake included. Along with our members, we welcomed MPP Deepak Anand and members of the World Franchise Day Canadian Sub-Committee to celebrate in style.

Our online celebration also saw members from across the country gather to connect, play trivia, and share their highlights of the day.

CFA Volunteer Recognition Program The CFA provides a full range of programs and services to help our members grow through the support of the franchise community. These include advocacy, education and training, industry information and best practice articles, networking, and lead generation.

None of these programs and services would be possible without the help of our volunteers!
