MOBIUS STRIP pavilion
professor. chengde wu . fall 2017 collaboration. pedro barron . daniel wang Project Description: Create a pavilion that would be used by the students of Langford and A&M. The design of the pavilion will integrate function, form, mathematics, a concept, and digital fabrication methods. For our design purpose, we wanted to improve the quality of space in front of Langford A with our pavillion. We based our design from the concept of mobius strip. The meaning behind the mobius strip design is to blur the line that separates the status hierarchy in our society. The math behind the main shape that goes around our mobius strip design is the root square curve. Our pavillion concept was to combine an organic curvilinear shape with the mobius strip to contrast the buildings around it. In our design process, we used grasshopper to create the rail and shape of our mobius strip and rhino to render the final model.

SUBTRACTION-BEND complex
professor. alec borges . spring 2018 Project Description: Used two architectural concepts to design models that represents those concepts. Then I merge the ideas of the two models to create one design. This projects deals with the notions of subtraction and bend. The bend is formulated through the overall mass of the object. By using a technique of layers, the overall mass is able to bend. Through the idea of subtraction I was able to start to understand ideas of circulation for both interior and exterior spaces. I also established a set site for the building in order to understand the urban planning of architecture.

The models on the left show the progression of the project. Each one is a proto-model that goes with the architectural concept that the overall project is based on. The diagrams at the bottom show the progression in order to create the cite model that the project would be placed on. In order to bridge urbanization and architecture.

Original floor plan of case study house
INDEXICALITY analog model | drawings
professor. gabriel esquivel . fall 2018 Project Description: The original organization of the Case Study House 13 by Richard Neutra is organized around an exterior and interior void. Through a series of operation the new organization of the plan is based on an irregular figure and a figural edge condition that penetrates the plan. The irregular figure acts as a radial point and extends line throughout the plan. Using the diagrams as a 2-dimensiol representation and transgressing into a 3-dimensioal representation as a model. Using the same operation that took place in the diagrams and implanting them into the 3-dimensioal model. And creating shifts along the regulating lines which highlights the figure that runs and penetrates the model. Then using different material as skin on the model in order to represent solid and void and different shift with different identities.
Second Iteration: Irregularity figure
First iteration: Translating based on the radial point
Final Iteration: Translatwing based on the irregular figure

SECTIONAL OBJECT hi-fi | lo-fi
professor. gabriel esquivel . fall 2018 Project Description: Digital sectional object is formulated by using ideas of splitting and booleans by Gordon Matta Clark. He uses these architectural operations in order to expose hidden identities of physical structures criticizing the social hierarchy in society. From there introducing hi-fi elements of architecture such as poche and figure from Middleton Park by Edwin Lutyens to a lo-fi suburban house in order to activate the sectional cut. By merging the two ideologies of these two composers it highlights the importance of hi-fi elements in architecture and transgresses physical operations into digital operations.

professor. gabriel esquivel . fall 2018 My project began by using ideas and objects from my previous two projects. Project one being my indexicality model which is based from Richard Neutra’s Case study house 13. Project Two: Which is a digital sectional object that is formulated by using the ideas of splitting and Booleans by Gordon Matta Clark and introducing hi-fi elements of architecture such as poche, and figure from Middleton Park by Edwin Lutyens to a lo-fi suburban house in order to active the sectional cut. The post digital operation of the sweep manipulates figure digitally and creates a figural edge. Which translates 2 dimensional poche into a 3-dimensional object. These objects begin and end in different ontologies. Which create a combination of objects that become interconnected with a sweep that act as an external digital joint. And due to the nature of the sweep the figure is in a state of constant motion, the object only becomes static through the plans and section which reveal the cross-section curve is derived from poche elements from Middleton Park and my sectional object. All while the sweeps activate the sections and the plans This digital operation of the sweep only exists in a digital realm. And I use the sweep as a vital aspect to my overall project. This creates the digital reality that my project conveys. Which goes into the idea of a digital reality and using that to get a new agency in architecture. By showing the notion that architecture can possibly be articulated through a simple digital operation. The overall notion of the sweep forces the issue of transmission of authorship from the user to the software due to the software’s restriction in generating the sweep itself. Only leaving the manipulation of direction, scale, and the cross-section curve to the user. And by having the authorship fluctuate between the two this creates a direct

REHABILITATION CENTER digital objects professor. gabriel esquivel . joris putteneers spring 2019 | collaboration. anna cook ben hergert. luis rubio. courtney ward Project Description: a prison that holds AI, both physical (robots) and non-physical (data, viruses, glitches) and human prisoners and privileges rehabilitation and reintegration over punishment. This incorporates the ideas of Foucault in which the establishment is not focused on the modern thought of incarceration being centered around locking away members of society but through the goal of beginning their rehabilitation into society. This is contextualized in a future where surveillance has advanced to the point of accurate predictive capacities by AI, but also raises issues of privacy, as seen in the concept of 1984’s “thought police.” This project will also investigate hierarchy and corruption within this hypothetical prison system and how it is reflected in the formal realization. In order to rehabilitate the subjects within the prison, we will use smooth and hard surface modeling to shape an experience that is emphasized by the distortion of scales and the augmentation of reality. Reyner Banham’s premise of architecture having a responsibility to society allows for exploration of new spaces that are generated to further the assimilation and reintegration of prisoners into society
