Kicking off Frameline48 on Juneteenth, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero spotlights a brave and controversial artist at the intersection of Blackness and queerness as he comes into his power and finds his voice — while shaping the current cultural narrative. It also introduces one of the major currents running through the Frameline48 program: celebrating queer creators and artists, past and present. PARTNERS

Part confessional, part concert film, part backstage exposé, Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero catches the musical superstar as he embarks on his very first tour — which culminates in San Francisco — after breaking Billboard records with his debut single, “Old Town Road.” Unapologetically queer and proudly Black, Lil Nas X navigates uncharted territory as a recording artist and cultural figure, offering him the freedom to build his own dreams but without the security of following anyone’s footsteps.

EPISODICS

This trio of film treasures are primed, pumped, and ready to be introduced to new audiences in the best way possible: in a crowded theatre surrounded by fellow queers.

Each of the evenings in our hotly-anticipated sequel to last year's inaugural X-rated program at the Roxie offers an erotic time capsule of San Francisco at its queerest and horniest.

Get ready to scream, queen! Frameline Fangs is all queer, all fear, and back for its 6th year! Fangs showcases a fresh crop of LGBTQ+ horror from the twisted minds of today’s spookiest filmmakers.

Catch two of the finest LGBTQ+ episodic series (shown in full) at the Fest. One concerns a Black gay thirtysomething in Brooklyn; the other about a stuntwoman’s steamy affair with her leading lady.

PALACE NIGHTS

Rooted in historic and iconic venues, Frameline48 is a celebration of the beauty and diversity of The Bay Area. The Festival weekends take place at illustrious San Francisco Palaces: the Palace of Fine Arts and the Herbst Memorial Theatre. Both of these venues offer unique San Francisco experiences that connect us with the artistry of our storied city. Frameline48 will also explore traditional and non-traditional film spaces, including our longest-running venue partner, the Roxie Theater, serving as our Frameline48 hub. We’re returning to the New Parkway Theater in Oakland and The Vogue Theater in SF and will be hosting special screenings at the KQED Live screening room and the legendary Stud bar, recently reopened in its brand-new space on Folsom Street. Come discover the beauty of the Bay during Pride month with us!

Young Hearts

Anthony Schatteman

thu JUN 27 6pm

Brian J. Smith

Devoted partners Pat and Angie have shared a life, a love, and their Hong Kong apartment for decades—until Pat’s family starts to intervene—in this moving portrait of an older queer couple navigating society’s lingering biases. Writer/director Ray Yeung’s new feature won the 2024 Teddy Award.

Duino

fri JUN 21 6:30pm

sun JUN 23

Juan Pablo Di Pace & Andrés P. Estrada 8:30pm

Beautifully filmed in the Belgian countryside, this exceptional feature film debut from Anthony Schatteman is a refreshing tale of first love. When a cool new city boy moves in next door, 14-year-old Elias finds his feelings of friendship going much deeper than he knows what to do with.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story Sun JUN23 Michael Mabbott & Lucah Rosenberg-Lee

All Shall Be Well

Ray Yeung

6pm

Recipient of this year’s Out in the Silence Award, this affecting portrait reconstructs the fascinating life and immense talent of transgender singer Jackie Shane. The film investigates why the soul singer disappeared from the spotlight just as she was at the precipice of fame and success.

When Matías attended an international school on Italy’s Adriatic Coast, he fell passionately into the world (if not always the arms) of his eclectic classmates, most memorably a live-wire Swedish rebel-prince. Now decades later, as a filmmaker, he is trying to recapture the world — and love — he lost.

High Tide

Marco Calvani

fri JUN 28 8:30pm

For his first feature, Marco Calvani places his reallife partner, Marco Pigossi, at the heart of this sexy, bittersweet film about a Brazilian man in Provincetown making a living through the harsh gig economy following an unexpected break-up. Marisa Tomei and James Bland also star.

SAT

29 Lena Waithe Conversation JUN 8:30pm

This gorgeous and emotionally charged film goes behind the scenes of the infamous Fire Island Pines, a gay fantasyland on the East Coast, to uncover real life pleasures and simmering conflict. This doc combines breathtaking visions of natural beauty with the day-to-day drama of the island regulars.

Frameline is honored to present Lena Waithe with the Variety Creative Conscience Award, celebrating Waithe's career as a writer and producer, along with her work to champion the Black and queer communities. Join us for a conversation with Lena Waithe and Variety’s Jazz Tangcay at the Herbst Theatre.

I Don't Understand You

Linda Perry: Let it Die Here

SAT JUN 22 6pm

Brian Crano & David Craig

Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells are effortlessly funny as a married couple who jet-set off to Italy for their anniversary. Eagerly awaiting news on an adoption, the couple’s baby anxieties become the least of their problems when their getaway starts to spiral comically and wildly out of control.

In the Summers

Alessandra Lacorazza

thu JUN 20 6pm

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic competition at Sundance, this delicately powerful ode to fractured fatherhood and sibling solidarity follows two sisters over the course of the most formative years of their lives, with their adoring but tempestuous father.

Don Hardy

fri JUN 28 6:30pm

With cameos by Dolly Parton, Christina Aguilera, and Brandi Carlile, this portrait of Linda Perry (best known as the frontwoman for 4 Non Blondes) celebrates her as one of pop music's most influential forces. Afterwards, join us at Oasis for a live performance from Perry at our Pride Kickoff party.

My Old Ass Megan Park

fri JUN 21 8:45pm

After taking mushrooms on a camping trip, 18-year-old Elliott (Maisy Stella) crosses paths with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza), who delivers the ominous instruction: “Don’t fall in love.” This funny and unexpectedly moving film explores a queer youth’s discovery of her own bisexuality.

The Queen of My Dreams SAT JUN 22 Fawzia Mirza

8:30pm

Queer Muslim grad student Azra returns to her native Pakistan after her father unexpectedly dies in Fawzia Mirza’s feature debut. Though distance and ideology have driven Azra and her mother apart, they forge a new connection at the busy intersection of East and West, past and present.

The World According to Allee Willis thu JUN 27 Alexis Spraic

8:30pm

This fun, illuminating doc is a love letter to the late songwriter Allee Willis (who co-wrote Earth, Wind & Fire’s "September") from those who loved her, including Cyndi Lauper, Paul Reubens, Patti LaBelle, Lily Tomlin, the Pet Shop Boys, and Willis’ longtime partner Prudence Fenton.

Sally!

Deborah Craig

WED JUN 26 6pm

wed JUN 26 8:30pm

Sally Gearheart was a radical lesbian feminist (and something of a sapphic Casanova) in San Francisco whose trailblazing vision was the spark for movements with far-reaching impacts. This doc cements her legacy while illuminating both the personal and the political in Sally’s impactful life.
