Recreations Investing in Solar Energy to Power the Future By: Stephanie Bersani, Superintendent of Finance and Technology

The Park District of Franklin Park is taking a major step toward sustainability with solar panel installations at the Community Center, Franklin Park Ice Arena, and the Centre at North Park. The $1.3 million project is supported by more than $1 million in tax credits and rebates, including a $500,000 federal tax credit, $159,299 from ComEd inverter rebates, and $554,057 in Illinois Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). These incentives reduce the financial burden and ensure a strong return on investment. By purchasing the solar panels outright instead of entering a Power Purchase Agreement, the Park District will save $76,000 in the first year alone and an estimated $1.9 million over the next 20 years. Once installed, the panels will significantly reduce energy use: • • •

A total of 1,080 Q Peak Duo XL-G11S panels and 13 inverters will be installed, with General Energy Corporation overseeing construction. Beyond the savings, this project will provide opportunities for community education, inspiring residents—especially youth—to learn more about renewable energy and sustainability. The Park District is proud to lead the way in building a greener community while making the most of every tax dollar.
