Dr. John Patterson FPD’S NE W HEAD OF SCHOOL

In December 2019, the Board of Trustees of First Presbyterian Day School announced the hiring of Dr. John Patterson as FPD’s new Head of School. Dr. Patterson was the first choice of the Head of School Search Committee, among approximately 200 candidates, and was unanimously elected by the Board of Trustees at its October meeting. Dr. Patterson will officially assume the Head of School role following the completion of the 2019-2020 school year.

Dr. Patterson is currently in his tenth year as Head of School at Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) in Lynchburg, Virginia.

With an enrollment of nearly 2,000 students, LCA is the largest private school in Virginia and a flagship school of Christian private education in the Southeast. A native of Springfield, Illinois, he is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he was a Dean’s List student and leader on the basketball team. He served our country on active duty in Kuwait/Iraq during Operation Desert Fox and holds a

Master’s in Administration and Leadership and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

FPD Board Chair Danny Smith commented, “Dr. Patterson’s strong faith and Christian leadership have led LCA to unprecedented growth, success, and achievement. He brings a unique blend of strong leadership experience from West Point, service to our country as an Army Officer, and a full range of corporate and educational experience to FPD. In addition to a decade of experience in his role as a Head of School, his educational experience includes teaching, coaching, development, admissions and marketing. He and his wife, Cindy, a first grade teacher at LCA, share a strong commitment to Christian education. We believe John Patterson is the right person to lead FPD to its very best days. He is a strong and passionate advocate for Christian education on a national level.

What impresses you most about FPD?

No question about it…the people! As I initially engaged with Chairman Danny Smith, Mr. Dwight Jones, and the FPD search committee, I was astounded by their humility, energy, and love for FPD. Furthermore, as I connected with the school board in the interview process, I was thoroughly impressed by the depth of their questions and again, their devotion to FPD. My interaction with the leadership of TEAM FPD has also been very impressive. And certainly, the students at FPD. I cannot wait to get to know each of them. FPD is a flagship Christian school in the Southeast region and is well respected nationally for its Christ-centered community, exceptional reputation, well-rounded curriculum, and excellence in all areas. I am honored to be part of Viking Nation.

Why do you believe a Christ-centered education is so important?

A Christian worldview (based on the narrative of Creation – Fall – Redemption) is the only chance young people have to navigate the current culture that bombards students daily with mixed messages on what brings true happiness. A Christ-centered education teaches young people to find true joy in Christ and have an “othersfocused” servant mindset. Humble, Christ-like leadership is the only way to change the world, and this is our mission at FPD.

How would you describe your leadership style?

Servant. I seek to follow Jesus’s example as He served those around Him. I also enjoy the visionary component of leadership and excel at empowering others to execute with excellence.

Why should parents be excited about choosing FPD as their family’s school home?

While FPD will maintain its academic excellence coupled with its well-rounded extracurricular opportunities in fine arts, STEM, and athletics, we will also place a strong emphasis on organizational health and school culture. FPD is currently viewed as an example in Christian education, and a focus on organizational health and school culture must be a focal point for any successful organization. To further cast this vision, we will focus on creating a culture that is so engaging and contagious that prospective families will no longer wonder, “Should we go there?” Instead, they will say, “How can we go anywhere else?” Students will look forward to coming to school because of the mission-oriented, servant mentors who intertwine Christian worldview with a passion for their content.

Ultimately, FPD will continue to build young champions for Christ who are equipped to change the world.

What are you most looking forward to as part of the FPD family?

Just being part of Viking Nation! I look forward to listening and learning from students, families, and team FPD members regarding what is great about FPD and what we need to do to improve. This enjoyable and transparent dialogue will teach me a great deal and give me the unique perspective needed to effectively lead FPD. I look forward to attending the many things FPD students are part of, from the theatre performances and band concerts to the athletic events and tailgates. I am honored to be part of the FPD Family.

Taking Technology to the

Next Level A look at how FPD teachers use technology for classroom engagement.

Some of us may remember overhead projectors as being a novelty in classroom instruction. The clear pages placed on the illuminated box allowed the teacher to quickly convey solutions to math problems or answers to questions. With a flip of the switch, we could see a giant graph on the wall and the teacher would use dryerase pens to shade in areas and work through math problems. The overhead projector was the springboard for today’s latest classroom connectivity. The need was known – teachers needed dynamic tools to engage students. They needed to be able to highlight, correct, and work problems in real time to give students a more in-depth understanding.

In 2013, FPD was one of the first schools in the country to launch a 1-to-1 initiative, equipping each student in fifth through twelfth grade with their own personal tablet computer. These were combined with Smart Boards for a revolutionary way of classroom connectivity. Students and teachers could share, collaborate, and organize information digitally.

This was just the beginning. In order to stay at the forefront, FPD now replaces student tablets and other classroom technology every three years through a lease program.

With the start of the 2019-2020 school year, FPD welcomed its largest classroom technology enhancement since the beginning of the 1-to-1 initiative six years prior. Every teacher and each student in fifth through twelfth grade received a powerful new tablet

computer, a Dell 5290. In addition, each classroom was equipped with an Interactive Flat Panel, which replace the Smart Boards and allow for higher resolution imagery and further classroom engagement.

However, the key to all of these tools and resources is how teachers and students use them.

The SAMR Model1 provides a useful framework for evaluating technological use in education. Each level of the SAMR Model provides an increased value for technology use. The lowest level is substitution, in which technology acts as a basic substitute for nontechnological alternatives. An example of this would be reading a passage from a book on a screen instead of paper. The second level is augmentation; technology acts as a substitute with some enhancements. An example would be reading a passage from a book that also includes an audio or video file.

The third and fourth levels are modification and redefinition. FPD teachers focus their classroom lessons on these two levels. These are the sweet spot of FPD curriculum.

Modification is an actual change to the design of the lesson or its learning outcome based on the use of technology. Redefinition is

the last stage and includes redefining a lesson in a way that would not be possible without technology.

“Anytime we talk about technology in the classroom, I think you must consider, is it transforming learning and instruction, or did it just change the format of delivery with a ‘book behind glass’ type of instruction?” says Lyn Brumbelow, FPD Lower & Middle School Technology Instructor. “At FPD, we focus on the former. We want students to take ownership of their learning, and using technology makes that possible. The initiative allows teachers to move toward a learning-centered classroom instead of teacher-centered, giving more opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of skills by creating digital artifacts such as videos, presentations, podcasts, etc.”

To equip students to operate in a technology-based world, the modification and redefinition levels of the SAMR model are key.

Students must use technology as a tool for production, not just consumption.

Coach Rennie Atkinson teaches AP European History and has seen a dramatic change in the use of the tablets and technology over the years. “The biggest thing is that students better understand the tablet is a tool they can use [for their studies],” he says. “Each year, they are learning more and more about all the ways they can use them.”

In Coach Atkinson’s class, students develop Prezi presentations and enhance them with Screencast-o-matic videos. Then they connect their tablets to the Interactive Flat Panel for dynamic group presentations that enhance software skills, creative thinking skills, and public speaking abilities.

In Tami Tesch-Jerles’s AP Physics, a class that easily lends itself to enhanced technology use, students have access to the latest software that allows them to take their studies much further.

“Sensors [on our lab tools] communicate with our screens via an interface called Labquest,” she notes. “Then we can take live data and transform it directly into tables and graphs, and manipulate variables to foster understanding of scientific relationships. Moreover, the tablet allows each of the students in a particular lab group access to the graphing software, which makes the work shareable and mobile.”

While those of us who attended school in the ‘80s and ‘90s were fascinated by the idea of video calls, that is common place now. Skype is used in some of our Spanish classes to call students at Casa Hogar in Mexico. Likewise, coding was a novel concept that seemed reserved

for tech gurus. Now, FPD lower school students are learning the foundations for coding by programming robots to play songs, move in patterns, and avoid obstacles. Our middle school and high school robotics teams have a robust understanding of coding concepts, with the high school robotics team attending the World Robotics Championship in Houston, Texas, last year.

All of these concepts lay a foundation for the technology students will encounter in the future. FPD’s Profile of a Graduate states, among other characteristics, that FPD graduates will be “engaged and persuasive.” This means that graduates will be “able to winsomely participate in the public marketplace of ideas as a listener and communicator.” With a public marketplace increasingly permeated with technological concepts, students need to understand these concepts greater than ever before so they are able to confidently operate in that market.

While FPD’s latest tablets and advanced Interactive Flat Panels may seem fascinating because of their capabilities, it is really the resulting engagement that makes them remarkable. Students may not remember their FPD tablets or the Interactive Flat Panels on the wall. What they will remember is creating their first website, talking to peers across the world via live video, or programming their first robot. These moments are made possible by technology, but they are made memorable by the people.

This continuous goal of equipping teachers and students with the best technology is fueled by the understanding that today’s classroom studies are preparing students to interact with technology that has not yet even been invented.

Teachers are equipping students for careers that engage technological advances not currently in consideration.

Top 5 Benefits of FPD’s 1-to-1 Technology Initiative 1. Access to Content - Students have access to online learning resources that amplify their lessons. These include online journals, e-texts, and streaming video from educational networks such at The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, and Screenvue.

2. Critically Engaged Learning - Technology improves instruction by allowing for lesson discussion rather than basic dictation. Interactive media, educational software application, and classroom connection allow teachers to collaborate with students.

3. Meaningful & Creative Expression - The tablets provide both standard productivity tools as well as those for developing oral, visual, collaborative, and multimedia composition skills using both keyboard and stylus.

4. Connection to the Teacher - Digital notebooks in the classroom are shared. Teachers can review the notes, homework, and quizzes of their students and provide feedback in a timely manner. Teachers also have access to classroom tablet monitoring capabilities to better oversee the classroom.

5. 21st Century Skills and Issues - Students gain vital technology skills as well as critical thinking abilities to operate in a digital world. Our digital society introduces students to new issues. By introducing technology in a classroom setting, we are able to address those issues in an educational manner and prepare students to approach them with a biblical worldview.

New Name for FPD’s Community Service Program FPD’s community service program is a unique, integral part of the FPD educational experience. Service at FPD moves beyond volunteering time. FPD students serve distressed population groups and develop solutions to community issues. They assist with projects that make life-changing differences and organize programs that have long-lasting impacts. They transform their communities.

While creating and assisting with these service opportunities, students often realize they are experiencing their own transformation, one of their heart and mind. For that reason, members of FPD’s Project Lead decided at a recent retreat to rename FPD’s community service program “TRANSFORM.” While FPD students are required to give 120 hours of service in

the community during their high school years, they often give more as they experience the joy and the transformation that comes from helping others.

“As we go into our community and beyond, we expect to help transform others’ lives and our community by serving,” said Holly Scott, FPD’s Director of Community Service. “However, what we often find is that our lives are transformed. We are ministered to as much as we minister.”

This love for service begins in FPD’s youngest grades. Students have opportunities from the earliest ages to serve others in Macon and beyond. Our lower school students pack bags for Backpack Ministry, serve at Loaves & Fishes, and visit local nursing homes, among other opportunities. In middle school,

FORM students experience service learning with projects related to the curriculum. On Middle School Community Service Day, students, faculty, and parents assist at different ministries in Macon.

These early exposures develop a foundation for service. Students do not see Community Service as a requirement to be met for graduation. Instead, it is an opportunity to use their God-given gifts to help others.

“Community Service at FPD has transformed me in a way I never thought possible,” notes FPD senior Anna Massey. “People older than me helped influence me to be the person I am today.

“Students recognize that each person encountered when they serve is created in God’s image and has unique gifts that they can share,” concludes Mrs. Scott. “As we set out to fulfill our school’s mission to change the world for God’s glory, the service we do transforms our hearts to be more and more like Jesus who created us and who did not come to be served but to serve. Our hope is that everyone is transformed, and the transformation is ultimately a transformation of the heart through Jesus.”

New Entry to FPD’s Cross Country Trail Thanks to Annual Fund gifts, the FPD Peake Cross Country Trail has a stunning new entry. The arch marking the start and finish to the Peake Cross Country Trail provides a beautiful welcome to the course, as well as a backdrop for runners finishing their race.

Throughout the course, runners will also appreciate encouraging quotes and Bible verses on recently installed hand-painted signs. The finishing touch of a restroom and pavilion will be completed this spring, just in time for the fall 2020 season.

Frankenstein Trial in the Classroom To wrap-up their study of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, students in Mr. Andrew Katzer’s AP Literature class hosted a mock-courtroom trial of Victor Frankenstein. Students played the roles of lawyers and characters within the book. The assignment required students to focus on the function of characters in a work of literature, including details and motivations of each character, and to write analytically. Students also enhanced their presentation and public speaking skills. These are some of the major skills covered in Mr. Katzer’s AP Literature class; incorporating them into the trial gave students a unique perspective on the relevance of these skills.

Eric Litwin Visits FPD Lower School FPD was honored to host Eric Litwin on Tuesday, November 5. Mr. Litwin is a #1 New York Times Best Selling, award-winning author who brings early literacy and music together. He is the original author of the Pete the Cat series as well as the author of The Nuts and Groovy Joe. FPD’s Media Center was full of smiles and laughter as Mr. Litwin read funny stories and sang silly, interactive songs for FPD’s 3K -5th graders.

7th Grade Takes STEAM Tour of Mercedes-Benz Stadium FPD seventh graders enjoyed a behind-the-scenes STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) tour of Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Students learned about the stadium’s LEED Platinum Certification, their partnership with SCAD, the architectural elements, and advanced technology.

20 Years of FPD at Rock Eagle FPD’s sixth grade students celebrated 20 years of field trips to Rock Eagle in Eatonton, Georgia. The class field trip is a favorite among students, with upperclassmen often citing Rock Eagle as one of their favorite experiences.

At Rock Eagle’s sprawling campus, students participated in canoeing, hiking, lake assessment, herpetology, raptor study, and teamwork challenges. They capped off each evening with a group campfire complete with snacks and funny stories.

When asked what she hopes students take away from the trip, FPD sixth grade science teacher Nancy Massey quickly proclaims, “Confidence, wonder, and an appreciation for the intricacy of nature. They learn how every organism has an important role, even snakes!”

The three-day trip involves a lot of hands-on study. Students get messy and muddy as they use all of their senses to engage with what they are learning.

“Rock Eagle provides a safe and supportive opportunity for trying something new,” notes Mrs. Massey. “Students leave their parents behind, give their electronics a break, and set out to discover God’s gift of the natural world! Fueled by middle school energy and curiosity, the students thrive on Rock Eagle’s massive campus! New friendships blossom, and new talents and gifts are discovered.”

AP Literature Hosts Character-Themed “Food Truck Festival”

The FPD Media Center got a little tastier as Dr. Kristy Alvarez’s AP Literature class hosted a “Food Truck Festival” based off Alice Walker’s book The Color Purple. Students wrapped up their study of the novel by making dishes inspired by a character or a theme of the book. Working together in groups, they created dishes like spicy chili based off the character Sofia, or “Sing Me the Blues” lemonade based off the character Shug. Students then presented and shared their dishes with faculty and other students.

“I hope that students gained a deeper understanding of the major themes of the book including family, friendship, redemption, overcoming obstacles, and finding God’s work in unexpected places and events,” noted Dr. Alvarez. “Additionally, I hope that students were able to connect with the characters in a deep and meaningful way by learning to have empathy for people who may seem different from them on the outside, but with whom they share many of the same hopes and dreams.”

The courts include two Futsal courts, three dedicated Pickleball courts, four Quick-Start tennis courts, and two tennis courts that can also be converted to four Pickleball courts. They represent the only dedicated Pickleball and Futsal courts in Macon, Georgia.

She has been on staff with the Vikings for 25 years and has coached basketball, track, and soccer. Coach Spear previously served as an assistant softball coach and coached the 2019 team through a rebuilding season into the season playoffs. This year’s First Team All-Region players were Allison Hammack and Abbey Surles. Second Team All-Region players were Avery Stroud, Cardin Weaver, and Olivia Parker. The Lady Vikings graduate five seniors: Allison Hammock, Gracie Slade, Cassie Sutton, Abbey Surles, and Cardin Weaver.

4-Peat State Champions FPD’s Shooting Sports team finished the 2019 season by claiming their fourth back-to-back State Title!

In the GISA State Championship, FPD’s team went up against 11 other teams, 178 shooters total, in their division to prove their shooting prowess once more.

The top three shooters’ scores make up the team score, and FPD won by 5 targets (out of 900). The top three were Dallas Ward, Tate Skipper, and Bryce Daniel.

“Our student-athletes put in a lot of practice and it paid off,” said head coach John Mark Smith. “They worked hard all year long, before and during the season.”

The team is poised to continue their success with a strong group of rising student-athletes and a middle school team that won their state title as well.

Student-Athlete Spotlight: Luke Dasher ‘20 Luke Dasher is ranked the number one golfer in the state of Georgia for the class of 2020. That in itself is an amazing accomplishment, but Luke has much more to be proud of. He is three-time All-Area, three-time All-State, and is one of only three golfers from Macon to win the Georgia Junior State Championship.

Luke also qualified last year to play in the High School World Championship, which included the top 150 players in the world.

Over the past three varsity golf seasons, Luke led the Vikings to a state championship, state runner-up, and a top 5 finish. He has also been instrumental in the FPD golf team being ranked as one of the top 50 out of over 32,000 teams in the National High School Golf Association.

Luke says he likes golf so much because it’s an “unbeatable sport.” Quoting golf legend Arnold Palmer, he notes, “‘Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is, without a doubt, the greatest game mankind has ever invented.’ This quote is the perfect way to describe golf and is exactly why I play it.”

with Georgia Southern University on November 15. The Statesboro-based university started recruiting him early, but Luke wanted to explore his options.

He visited several other schools in the SEC. In a “save the best for last” moment, Luke visited GSU last. He immediately knew he could see himself there.“I chose Georgia Southern mainly because of the guys on the team and the coach,” said Luke. “They’ve been extremely nice and welcoming to me. I’ve gotten to know most of them well through playing in tournaments. Ever since I met head coach Carter Collins, I could see myself playing for him. He knows how to run an amazing program, and he has the proof after taking them to the NCAA championship last year.”

Luke knows there will be highs and lows during his golf career, but he is ready. “I know I will be able to learn from all of these experiences, which will help me build character and make me a better player,” he notes.

FPD Golf Coach, Joe Childs, follows that up with a bright outlook for Luke. “Luke has a chance to not only leave FPD as its most distinguished golfer, but potentially the most distinguished high school golfer to play in Macon and even at the state level. He’s just that good,” proclaims Coach Childs.

Meet FPD’s New Elementary Music Teacher

Brayden Hutcheson Brayden Hutcheson’s classroom is noisy - always noisy! And that’s just the way he likes it. Hutcheson started at FPD this year after graduating from Mercer University with a degree in music education, but his love for music extends much further back. Now, this Perry native is thrilled to be in the classroom teaching music to FPD’s lower school students. The students love Mr. Hutcheson and his funny antics, peaceful presence, and extensive repertoire of musical talent.

We sat down with Brayden for a little Q&A about his love for music and why it’s an important part of elementary education.

What was the first instrument you ever played?

The first instrument I ever played was piano when I was six.

Does musical talent run in your family?

Yes! My dad was a music major in college, and a band director as I grew up. My mom is also a musician. Both were in the Redcoat Band at UGA. My brother is a music producer and audio engineer in Nashville, Tennessee. I was drawn to music because of how prevalent it was in my house. I was lucky enough to grow up with a piano in my house, and no matter who was home, there was always music being played.

What are some of your earliest memories playing instruments?

I remember playing piano growing up when I took lessons. That would probably be my first memory of playing an instrument. I never had the patience or attention span to sit and practice one instrument for very long. I was always moving around playing as many different instruments as I could find. My joy has always come from learning something new.

A specific memory I have is one of the first pop songs I learned on piano was “That’s the Way it Is” by Céline Dion. That song has become a longrunning joke between my brother and me due to how many times I played it growing up.

What instruments do you play now?

Piano, saxophone, trumpet, guitar, drums, flute, trombone, ukulele, and recorder! As a music education major, we take classes to learn how to play a multitude of instruments. While I can “make a noise” on just about every instrument, this list is what I would consider myself proficient in.

What’s your favorite instrument?

My favorite instrument is the piano. Whenever I am stressed, I find that the most relaxing thing for me to do is to just sit and play piano.

FPD’s Spirit of the Vikings Marching Band Takes Home Top Honors at Fall Competitions The Spirit of the Vikings Marching Band and Vanguard attended the Armuchee Invitational Marching Contest in Rome and the Blue Ridge Marching Invitational. In Rome, they took home a Superior Rating in Festival Performance and 2nd Place in Class A Competition. Drum Major Owen Huggins also received a Superior Rating and 1st Place in Class A Drum Major. At the Blue Ridge Marching Invitational, they were honored to receive an overall Excellent Award.

High-Flying Fun The FPD band auxiliaries, which consist of the color guard and majorettes, travelled with coach Lydia Gray and assistant coach Emily Gibbs to the Circus School in Atlanta in July to train for this year’s halftime show, “The Greatest Showman.”

Training sessions were led by experts at the school in various areas, including team acrobatics and aerial silks. The team was able to demonstrate many of these skills during FPD’s halftime show using a portable aerial silks rig specially designed and constructed for the show.

FPD’s One-Act Cast & Crew Take Home Top Awards at ACSI One-Act Competition FPD’s One-Act performers presented The Secret of Madame Defarge at the ASCI One-Act Competition on November 16.

The cast and crew received awards for Best Ensemble, Best Set, Best Tech, and tied for Best in Show.

Individual awards went to Tyler Perkins, All-Star Cast; Reagan Simmons, Best Supporting Actress; Daniel Cardis, Best Supporting Actor; and Ryann Perkins, Honorable Mention Best Actress.

“What the beautiful glass awards don’t show,” said FPD Fine Arts Director, Dr. Andrew Strickland, “is what a great job our cast and crew did all weekend long. They were highly supportive of other groups. They were friendly and connected with others. They threw themselves into the workshops. They helped each other through difficult circumstances. They were incredibly respectful to the judges and other directors. In short, they were the reflection of Christ that we all want our students to demonstrate. They made me endlessly proud.”

I am very thankful for that,” he says. “One thing I always say is, ‘Without struggle, there is no progress.’ I have struggled, and now I am seeing the fruits of my labor.”

This time 50 years ago, FPD was in the midst of its very first school year. There was enthusiasm amongst peers and teachers – like there is now.

There was excitement about school events and activities – like there is now. There was anticipation for a new spring semester – like there is now.

And in that very first year of FPD’s existence – there were a couple of fundamental beliefs that guided those inaugural steps – the new school in north Macon would build a strong, Christ-centered, college-preparatory reputation, and it would build that standing in our community on the two pillars of faith and family.

We are celebrating 50 years of faith and family this year. The school has changed in countless ways over the years, and the people have even changed from those formative years to today, but the main thing is still to keep the Main Thing the Main Thing. We are grateful that FPD has done that and trust you see that faith and family are alive and well in this beautiful place.

A lot goes into educating and equipping a child. Tuition dollars provide much of the basic resources required to hold those high standards in our classrooms, on our fields, courts, and stages. It is our Annual Fund, however, that pushes the bar higher – providing additional funding that enhances the efforts of our teachers, coaches, fine arts directors, and club advisors.

Thank you to everyone who stands behind that mission and supports it with gifts to the FPD Annual Fund. Every gift of every amount is appreciated. We pray that God will bless you and your family and will continue to bless First Presbyterian Day School.

STATEMENT OF GIVING 2018 - 2019 Annual Fund The FPD Annual Fund consists of two kinds of gifts - restricted and unrestricted. Restricted gifts may be designated for various academic, athletic, fine arts, facilities, or miscellaneous categories. Unrestricted gifts go toward the greatest need. The funds work like a checking account in that any gifts not spent in a given year roll over to the next year. Many times, restricted funds are encumbered for ongoing projects. The total number of donors to the 2018-2019 FPD Annual Fund was 591.

Donors who make gifts totaling $1,000 or more annually, including matching gifts, are automatically qualified to become members of the Day School Society, FPD’s annual giving club, and are recognized at a special reception and dinner each year. Donors who wish to remain anonymous may choose to opt out of membership. Donors who make lifetime gifts totaling $100,000 or more are considered Life Members of the Day School Society.

Under a Georgia state law established in 2008, taxpayers are able to re-direct a portion of their state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance. FPD has partnered with the GOAL Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law. This program allows FPD to provide needbased financial assistance to eligible students. Letter from Charlie Parrish Chief Financial Officer

As FPD celebrates its fiftieth year of educating and equipping students to change the world for God’s glory, I can’t help but reflect on the countless ways that God has worked to create, sustain, and rule over His work at FPD. From the motion made at First Presbyterian Church to establish the school to the vibrant community pillar that FPD is today, the long-standing work of God’s fingers has been obvious and amazing.

During that span, over 3000 FPD graduates have walked across the stage to receive their FPD diplomas, propelling them to the next step of their journey to defend the faith and change the world for Christ.

Having seen my own two children walk the graduation stage this past May, the value of the school’s mission suddenly became more real and personal.

How blessed were my kids to have been plucked out of an orphanage in northwest Russia, and brought into a family who loves the Lord; a church where the gospel is preached and taught; and a special school where the faculty loved and invested in them, consistently challenged them academically, celebrated with them in their successes, walked with them when they stumbled, and steered them toward Christ all along the way. There was

no better investment for our children than that. To the remarkable faculty and staff at FPD, the words ‘thank you’ are simply insufficient.

God’s rich blessings on FPD continue for the next generation of graduates.

For the twenty-fourth consecutive year, the school’s operating fund was strong enough to provide for the building of reserves. Stability indicators include an endowment fund which has grown to $4.6M, net assets of $13M, and a reserve fund balance of $1.2M. All of these combine to position FPD among the most financially stable independent schools in Georgia. Spending priorities remain in place for twenty-first century learning initiatives, faculty development, student life, facility maintenance, and academic programs. The most mission-critical investment is the one made in FPD faculty and staff.

Sixty-five cents of every tuition dollar goes to fund salaries and benefits for the committed teachers and staff, whose passion for Christ-centered teaching equips FPD students to be world changers.

Thank you for your sacrificial commitment toward the pursuit of the special mission at FPD. The forward momentum that God has provided is nothing short of remarkable! Since there is still much to do, we remain faithful that He will use your investment to change the world for His glory.

Lifelong Memories

Hugh Comer ‘79

FPDS had many wonderful teachers during my years there, and I have great memories of all of them. However, one person who significantly shaped my spiritual life was Mark Heard. I believe Mark taught Bible for only one year at FPDS, and I think it was our ninth grade year, which would have been ’75 – ’76. What I remember is that Mark often came to class with his guitar and sometimes sang songs for us instead of giving a lesson! I followed Mark’s music career and was struck by his commitment to Jesus and belief that his Christian faith was relevant in every area of life. God used this in a powerful way to encourage me to seek to follow Jesus wherever he led me in life.

Sanford Jones McAllister ’76 I graduated from FPDS in 1976. This was the second graduating class, and I think we only had about 60 students in my class. My classmates and I put on the very first “Junior/Senior” (probably now called prom) at FPDS. The dance was held in the gym, which we decorated ourselves.

Many teachers there had a lasting impression on me – Mrs. Gibson, Colonel Jones, Mrs. Middlebrooks, Coach Mac, and Mrs. Meyers (who taught typing – now called keyboarding, truly one of the most useful classes I ever took!). I am fortunate to have made wonderful friends at FPDS – many I still regularly see and stay in touch with. This is one of the biggest blessings of attending school there.

I am impressed with how the school has expanded but has stayed true to the mission on which it was founded. It is a jewel for Middle Georgia students.

Kalo Oglesby ‘12 There are many [memories], but one that will stand the test of time while I trek the journey of my professional career is one from the faculty at the time I attended – Love is what you do, not what you say. In the climate we live in today, I think it is worthy to note that differences make the world a better place, but consistency in how you treat people makes it a better place to live. I have no doubt that the love I was shown, had nothing to do with me specifically – this was the FPD way. I see it emphatically developing, ever so quickly, by way of the make-up of the student body that reflects all walks of life.
