Dear FPD Family and Friends, We are very proud of the excellent work being done throughout the school – in the classrooms and beyond. We are thankful for the amazing people and resources God has blessed FPD with. The faculty and staff count it a great privilege to work and serve the school family and to be part of our students’ lives as they learn and grow. The following pages provide a glimpse of the many opportunities through which the FPD family is making a difference for the glory of Christ.

A wonderful recognition of the God-honoring work happening in the classroom was the 2015 National Blue Ribbon designation for our Elementary School by the United States Department of Education. The high level of achievement demonstrated by our elementary students is a reflection of their diligence in an engaging and challenging sequence of study taught by our outstanding faculty. Beyond the academic successes of our students, nominated schools are evaluated on their overall programs, use of testing data, leadership, professional development, community involvement and other measures to insure the school is exemplary and a model school for others to emulate. A 2015 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL

for exemplary high performance

In September 2015, FPD announced the Elementary School was recognized for a second time by the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) as a National Blue Ribbon School for Exemplary High Performance. This prestigious honor is only awarded to fifty private schools each year and was the third National Blue Ribbon recognition for a division of FPD since 2003. Below is information about the award and what it means for FPD. What is the National Blue Ribbon Award?

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is a program of the US Department of Education and has honored America’s most successful public and private elementary, middle, and high schools since 1982. Since 2003, the program has recognized exemplary schools in two categories. (1) Schools where students achieve at very high levels and (2) schools that have shown substantial improvement with high poverty populations or have narrowed subgroup achievement gaps.

There was no set student achievement standard prior to 2003. According to the selection criteria, schools must be

Who nominates schools?

The state departments of education nominate public schools and the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) nominates private schools. Private schools who believe they meet the eligibility requirements must inform CAPE and submit all required documentation in order to be considered for nomination. The USDOE allows schools to be nominated again after 5 years. CAPE, however, gives priority to schools who have not received the award.

How does a school become eligible for consideration?

There are two categories of eligibility – (1) Exemplary High Performing and (2) Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing. In high performing schools, the category in which the FPD elementary was recognized, standardized test performance in each grade on mathematics and reading must place the school among the top 15% of schools nationally for private schools and in the state for public schools. Once a school is considered eligible, other criteria are considered to make final selections by the USDOE. What criteria does the USDOE use when considering nominees?

Once a school is considered eligible by CAPE, the USDOE evaluates: the school’s overall curriculum and learning standards; instructional methods and interventions; the school’s use of assessment results; how the school engages families and community; school climate and culture; professional development; how the school shares success with other schools; school leadership; financial and demographic data; and, in the case of repeat awardees, how the previous award has affected the school and how the school has assisted other schools.

What does this mean for FPD? “Not only does the National Blue Ribbon confirm that FPD provides an exceptional education, it also means that CAPE and the USDOE believe that the FPD Elementary is a school others can and should emulate,” said FPD Assistant Headmaster, Dr. Barry Shealy. “A recognized school must be able and willing to educate other schools on how they can have the same success.” Since FPD’s Middle School won the National Blue Ribbon in 2012, several schools have visited FPD’s campus to learn more about our Middle School advisory program, technology program, and overall school governance structure and administration. “Blue Ribbon schools serve as a resource for other schools, helping improve education across the country,” confirmed Dr. Shealy.

Is Elementary School

College Preparatory?

How starting early at a college preparatory school can make a difference in future college success.

- Dr. Barry Shealy, Assistant Headmaster Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar started by eating through an apple on Monday then two pears on Tuesday. He added a little more each day before having a tummy-unsettling junk food binge on Friday. He brought everything back together with a nice green Saturday leaf. The little caterpillar was then no longer little nor was he hungry just in time to (spoiler alert!) transform into a beautiful butterfly. This book is just one of many images that comes to mind when I think of education and child development. Any good school will have a plan to take a student where he or she is and help move the student forward along a continuum of knowledge, skills, and habits of mind. Ideally, this continuum will also lead toward a goal just as the butterfly is the end result for Carle’s caterpillar.

For a college preparatory school, clearly preparation for success in college is an essential goal. For FPD, pursuit of that goal begins with students as young as three years old. This continuum from egg to butterfly may stretch as long as fifteen years.

So thinking about what college preparation looks like in elementary, we have to start with the end in mind. What are the competencies students need to realize success as they move on to college?

Identifying those competencies and how they are developed allows us to design a continuous stream of experiences that begin with the youngest children and carry them to these end goals. National and state standards, research in child development, and expectations of colleges all go into this design.

Let us consider a few ideas that are especially important.

Literacy

Literacy may be the most obvious and important set of skills to develop. I heard Michael Lindsay, President of Gordon College in Massachusetts, tell a group of Christian school administrators that his school needed students to come prepared to read and make sense of complex text and to respond and express themselves well and persuasively in writing, speaking, and discussion. Most people will recognize the importance of having students “read-read-read” and policy-makers have sometimes set guidelines for the number of words to read or incentives to increase the number of books. It is important for students to be regular readers and to find books that interest them to help this happen. However, it is also important that students read books and other texts that are challenging for them, allowing them to grow in their ability. Students also need to learn to deal with texts that they read for purposes beyond pursuing their own interests and enjoyment.

In our college preparatory elementary program, we find out where students are in their development and support their growth as any

good school would. However, we also know they need to achieve a particular targeted reading level by high school to find success there and in college. They also must be comfortable and competent writing and speaking in a variety of contexts. Our curriculum and expectations are set to help students achieve and make continual progress along this trajectory by carefully selecting reading materials and levels, assigning writing and speaking practice, and establishing minimum benchmarks for each grade. Preparing students to read high school and college level literature and textbooks and have strong communication skills starts in early childhood.

Thinking and Investigation Skills

Basic skills and knowledge development are important in elementary school. A college preparatory elementary program must provide a strong foundation, but also go beyond these basic skills. At FPD, all students will at least complete mathematics study through the college algebra and trigonometry level with about 40% taking at least one college-level Calculus course and as many

studying statistics. These studies require a great degree of abstract reasoning. Beginning very early on, we can help students develop the foundation for more abstract reasoning by developing their conceptual understanding, number sense, and reasoning and problem solving skills. In 1998, we began a shift from a traditional operation-oriented math program to our current program. The benefits of this shift included a math test score rise by as much as 20 percentiles; accelerating our students’ entrance to Algebra I by about two years; and, as these elementary students moved through our middle and high school, we saw their participation in advanced science and mathematics studies greatly increase. Students traditionally encounter several conceptual roadblocks during their mathematical development (for example, decimals in fourth grade and Algebra in middle school). The foundation our students have today has eased those transitions greatly as well as prepared students for the mathematics required in the physical sciences.

A child is born a person, created in the image of God. While recognizing that the child’s reasoning ability develops over time, we want to be careful to not underestimate the intellect of the child. We expect students to ask questions and talk about what they read. We want students to expect to explain why. We ask them to investigate the world around them. While there is much science content knowledge that can be developed, a key part of early science education is coming to know what science is – making sense of our world through exploration. Then we also expect students to understand science from a responsibility and stewardship perspective. As students participate in nature study and in investigation in the science lab and outdoor science centers, they develop the attitudes and habits of mind for success in high school and college lab science.

Becoming an Independent Learner

Recently, one of our graduates compared high school and college teachers. From his perspective, high school teachers presented and explained content and then made you do things to learn the content. He felt college professors, on the other hand, talked to you about some of the content and then left you on your own to learn. While this perspective might be a little extreme, it is the case that a college student is expected to do a great deal of learning independently. Having taught on the college level, I know that the general rule of thumb expectation does exist that a student spend at least 2 hours studying or working outside of class for every hour in class. The development of these independent learning skills needs to take place over time. From very early on, a college preparatory program will provide students opportunity to practice and move toward independence. These skills include goal-setting and self-direction, time and task management, self-monitoring and knowing when to ask for help, and reflection on tasks. Purposeful and age-appropriate homework tasks are an important part of this development.

Grit & Other Character Trait Development University of Pennsylvania professor Angela Lee Duckworth has been involved in research into the impact of non-cognitive character traits on achievement. Her particular area of interest is grit or resilience.

She notes that independent schools have always emphasized the importance of character education. One might think about character education as making the student a better person or better citizen, but Duckworth’s point is that there are character qualities that can

be developed that support a student’s achievement. Self-control, a positive response to adversity, having focus and self-direction, perseverance, and willingness to take risks are traits that a college preparatory school will give students opportunities to develop.

Students should have occasion to struggle and learn how to deal with that struggle. Active and hands-on learning activities, long-term projects, community service, extra-curricular activities, and field trips all can give students opportunities to get out of their comfort zone and take risks in a safe and supportive environment.

Developing Attitudes and Habits of Mind The most exciting part of being an educator for me is seeing students’ excitement after struggling with a challenging problem and using their knowledge and experience to reach a solution.

I have seen this happen in a wide variety of contexts, including math and science competition, team challenge activities with our fourth and sixth graders, teaching chess to young kids, student travel both in the US and abroad, the arts, and athletics. A college preparatory elementary program should help students develop a love for learning and growing through new experiences. Studying, struggling, and committing to and follow through on tasks should become a natural part of the students’ life. A strong elementary college preparatory program also offers a range of opportunities for students to explore their interests and special gifts and abilities.

At First Presbyterian Day School, we have defined our end goals for each student in our Profile of a Graduate – a lifelong learner, challenged by the gospel, equipped for wellness, self-aware and growing, engaged and persuasive, and sensitive to others. The advantage of a 3K-12 program is that we can direct all we do educationally from the earliest ages toward these goals. A strong academic foundation and the future trajectory for achievement is best accomplished over time. Starting students early gives them the greatest opportunity for success both now and in their future years at college. Recently, I visited with two college seniors who had attended FPD beginning in kindergarten or before. Both have been very successful at a selective college and are headed off to graduate school next year. A couple of once Very Hungry Caterpillars, now beautiful FPD butterflies, off to “change the world for God’s glory.”

Introducing...

Unplugged

On Friday, October 30, during activity period, FPD’s high school students and faculty closed their tablets, put away their phones, and connected with one another the “old fashioned” way – non-electronic games, activities, and simple conversation. Introducing FPD Unplugged!

“At FPD we embrace the use of technology and believe it’s use in our context is extremely helpful in preparing students with necessary skills for future success,” remarked High School Principal Matt Kitchell. “We also understand that our students’ lives are overflowing with responsibilities and anxiety, and their minds are actively engaged with technology for large portions of the day. Sometimes our students just need to ‘unplug’ from their studies, phones and tablets and engage in purposeful, active conversations and activities with their peers and teachers. FPD Unplugged is a break from the norm.”

Faculty members designed activities around a hobby or special interest. Students then signed-up for the activity in which they were interested. Options included yoga, card games, ‘jam session,’ cookie decorating, pumpkin decorating, nature walk, and Frisbee among others.

“The only rules,” noted Kitchell, “are that they cannot study or use any digital technology. They are simply asked to walk away from their normal routine and stresses of life, and enjoy their community of loving faculty and peers.”

Based on feedback from the first event, FPD hopes to offer FPD Unplugged at least once per month beginning in January.

HOMETOWN SERVICE FPD Students Spend a Weekend in Service to the Middle Georgia Community

Kara Johnson, Community Service Department Intern During FPD’s Fall Break, twenty-five high school students did not spend their time catching up on sleep, vacationing with family, or relaxing in the sun. Instead, they spent their long weekend serving in Macon during FPD’s annual InTown Service Trip.

What is the In-Town Service Trip?

The In-Town Service Trip is a three-day opportunity for students to serve homeless and impoverished people throughout the city of Macon. There is great purpose in serving in the community. It’s a matter of serving to be the hands and feet of Christ. On the trip, students learned what it is really like to live in the shoes of those less fortunate.

They got to know these people and show love as Christ loved us.

Monday proved there was no rest for the weary. Beginning at 6:00 a.m., the students spent time in fellowship with one another over breakfast before heading to Daybreak Ministries. There they served breakfast, listened to stories and shared the love of Christ.

The weekend wrapped up with service at Macon Outreach before the tired yet joyful students rested over a group lunch and recap meeting.

Starting at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, students and leaders met at FPD to pray about the weekend before heading to Camp Grace for their Fall Festival to kick off the trip. Sunday morning began even earlier. At the wee hour of 6:15 a.m., students started serving breakfast and attended Sunday School at Centenary United Methodist Church followed by a church service and lunch at Strong Tower Fellowship.

“We thought we were going to be the ones encouraging them, but they were the ones encouraging us,” recounted FPD senior Dontrez Johnson.

After lunch, it was time to pull out the paint brushes, hammers, and other tools as students spent the remainder of the day painting, building and repairing homes with Rebuilding Macon.

At first many students had been timid, knowing they had to embrace an unfamiliar culture and speak with those to whom they had never spoken. It took some time, but once students began to hear the life stories, perspectives changed. They realized that the need for love and laughter are universal and that hope and joy are contagious, especially when that joy comes from Christ.

“We didn’t just bond with the kids at Camp Grace or the homeless we served, but we also bonded with each other,” added senior Beck Muse.

Campus Life

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT Congratulations to the Varsity Math Team! The team finished 2nd out of 14 teams at the Luella High School Invitational Math Tournament.

Members for this contest were Lucas Liang, Emily Culpepper, Jacob Cardis, and David Zhang.

Congratulations to sixth graders Rivers Shackelford & Marty Myers! The students took home first and fifth place in the Bibb County Fire Safety Essay Contest.

Congratulations to FPD Math Teams! The math teams competed in a large Atlanta area tournament at Rockdale Magnet School on Saturday, October 31. The Middle School team finished 3rd, the JV team finished 4th, and David Zhang placed 12 out of 142 in individual scores. Pictured are members of the Middle School math team, Daniel Cardis, Owen Huggins, Riley Davis, and Ben Huggins.

Congratulations to the High School Robotics Team! On Saturday, December 5, the team competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Qualifier at Kennesaw State University and was selected to advance to the State Tournament in February.

FPD Sixth Grader Sheldon Paine Wins Men’s 9-12 Overall Champion in the 2015 Georgia Bicycling Series Although he has been riding bikes since he was four years old, FPD sixth grader Sheldon Paine just began riding competitively this year and what a great year it has been! This past summer, Sheldon won the 2015 Men’s 9-12 Overall Champion in the Georgia Championship Series.

“At first I couldn’t believe I won the title my first year of racing,” said Sheldon. “I couldn’t have done it without all of the support from The Bike Store, my coaches and my parents. It is a true blessing from the Lord to be able to compete in this sport. It takes dedication and hard work, but it paid off.”

Since January 2015, Sheldon has logged over 3000 training miles. He is overseen by two coaches Derek Reeves, who works at The Bike Store in Warner Robins (Sheldon’s sponsors) and Christian Parrett, who raced on the US Juniors National Team, and is now a Pro Rider racing all over the world.

To win the Overall Champion award, Sheldon competed in a multitude of races throughout Georgia. In road races, Sheldon never finished in less than 4th place. In time trials, he holds the State Championship Title for 11- to 12-year-old racers.

While criteriums are Sheldon’s least favorite, he always finished in the top ten. Criteriums often have 50 plus riders and can be extremely dangerous, with riders hitting high speeds and taking 90 degree turns at 25 miles per hour.

The season finished at the end of August and his next race is not until the first weekend in February. In the meantime, Sheldon continues with his training to keep up his level of fitness and be ready for his next big event. Congratulations, Sheldon!

FPD Signs Sister School Agreement with Xiehe School in China On October 21, FPD signed a sister school agreement with the Guangzhou Xiehe School in Guangzhou, China.

The agreement officially opened the doorway for the exchange of ideas and information between the two schools. The goals of a sister school agreement are to promote international and cultural understanding, develop collaborative learning experiences, and provide opportunities for contact and interaction between the school communities.

Technology at both schools will allow students to exchange ideas, convey information, and, as a result, gain a stronger appreciation for different cultures and communities. For more immersive learning opportunities, First Presbyterian Day School and the Xiehe School will introduce international student and faculty exchange trips to the respective countries for up to ten students and six teachers from each school annually. The trips will include ten days of visits to the classrooms, interaction with students and faculty, visits to cultural sites and events, and community service.

“This sister school agreement is another way FPD is preparing our students to change the world for God’s glory,” said Dr. Barry Shealy, FPD Assistant Headmaster.

“The perspectives and understanding they can gain through international experience prepares them to be global citizens, stewards, and influencers. We look forward to the many opportunities for our students and faculty through this sister school agreement with the Xiehe School.”

The Xiehe School is a top tier public school in China, established over 100 years ago by Presbyterian Missionaries. The Xiehe School already has connections with the Macon community as eight current students at Wesleyan College are graduates of their program. FPD would like to thank Wesleyan College for first introducing Dr. Shealy to the Xiehe School and visiting their campus with him in 2013. Delegates of the Xiehe School made a visit to FPD’s campus in March 2015.

The sister school agreement corresponds with FPD’s growing international student program that now hosts 13 students from China, Japan and Vietnam on FPD’s campus.

Both the sister school agreement and international student program are part of the many ways FPD is preparing students to understand and impact the world.

Introducing the Jones Family International Residence Members of the Charles H. Jones family have always been loyal supporters of FPD. When they heard more space was needed for FPD’s growing International Program, they stepped in to help. Improvements and additions were needed to FPD’s International Residence in order to house more students. Through a gift from the Charles H. Jones Family Foundation, FPD was able to add three new bedrooms and bathrooms, an updated porch, a downstairs living area, and a new laundry room. On September 18, the International Residence on campus officially became the Jones Family International Residence. The renovated home was open for a special tour and dedication prior to the Friday night football game. With the additions, the Jones Family International Residence can now comfortably house up to ten international students, a host family, and a resident assistant.

Dick Frame Track Complex Gets New Surface The surface of the track at the Dick Frame Track Complex is better than ever thanks to a brand new polyurethane surface completed in December 2015. The new material provides a “tighter” surface that also yields a softer cushion on impact for the student-athletes as they train.

“We’re excited about our new track surface,” comments Greg Moore, FPD Athletic Director. “It will provide the absolute highest standard of facility excellence for our track athletes as they train.”

The track complex was dedicated in 2014 to honor long-time coach Dick Frame. “This surface – the entire facility really – will hopefully demonstrate our desire to provide our students with the absolute best,” continued Moore, “just as Dick Frame has always done as their mentor.

Hopefully, God can use our facility, just as He has used Dick Frame, to impact students for a very long time.”

Athletics

Fall Sports Recap In the Area-2 Tournament, the Lady Vikings placed third overall to earn the no. 3 seed from Area-1 in the State Tournament. Lundy Lader led FPD with 120 kills while Caitlin Farr finished first on the squad with 76 aces. Kirsten Beach totaled 65 blocks to pace FPD’s defensive attack while Morgan Mullis notched 244 digs.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the season came from senior Abigail Pierce. Pierce came back from ACL surgery in just sixth months and closed out her final campaign as a Lady Viking with 116 kills, 46 aces, 29 digs, five blocks and one assist.

SOFTBALL (24-8) (7-3 Reg. 7-A)

The FPD varsity softball team completed another impressive season, taking third at the GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament for a third consecutive year.

FPD advanced to Columbus, Georgia for the Elite Eight after winning its first round playoff series in two games over Excel Christian 5-1 and 7-1 at the FPD Softball Complex. In the Elite Eight on October 29, the Lady Vikings knocked off Tattnall Square Academy in the first game 7-1 followed by a 6-0 victory over Brookstone to secure a spot in the Final Four.

Along with Lader’s triple digit kill numbers, Mackenzie Johnson totaled 113 kills as well. She finished second on the team in assists (75) and digs (103). Macon Telegraph All-Middle Georgia 1st Team honors went to Johnson, while All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mention nominations went to Pierce, Beach, Mullis, and Bailey Ruble.

The future is bright for the Lady Vikings as Pierce is the lone senior FPD will lose to graduation.

On October 30, FPD faced the tough task of taking on back-to-back state champ ELCA and fell 4-1 late, forcing an elimination game on October 31 against Stratford Academy.

FPD’s season would end in on that Saturday morning against the Eaglettes, dropping a 4-1 contest.

Jill Rogers had one of the best seasons in FPD fast pitch history. The senior finished the year hitting .574, good for second all time in program history behind Fran Johnson (2010), who hit .590. Macon Telegraph All-Middle Georgia First Team recognitions went to Peyton Worsham and Rogers, while Allie Parkerson and Karsen Ochs received All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mentions. Rogers, Worsham, Parkerson, Ochs and Carli Sutton were named to the All-Region 7-A First Team while Caylee Ann Sutton, Emily Rutledge, Lizzie Reed and Ochs picked up All-Region Second Team honors.

VOLLEYBALL (27-19) (8-3 Area-2)

The Lady Vikings finished their best year in program history to date in the four years since becoming an official varsity sport.

Head coach Sarah Futo led the Lady Vikings to their most wins in program history.

FPD also advanced to the first round of the GHSA Class-A State Tournament, falling to Savannah Christian in three sets on October 15.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

The Lady Vikings picked up a fourth place finish at the GHSA Class-A Area-1 Meet on October 29, resulting in a sixth straight appearance in the GHSA Class-A Private State Meet. FPD would finish 15th at the State Meet on November 7.

FPD finished in the Top-10 in seven of 10 meets in 2015. They finished seventh at the Wesleyan Invitational, third at the Stratford Invite, sixth at the FPD/WRHS Invitational, fourth at the Strong Rock Invitational, fourth at the Mount de Sales Cavalier Clash, sixth at the Last Chance Meet at Carrolton High School and fourth at the Area-1 Meet.

Senior McKenzie Peterson and freshman Mary Jayne Bonfim earned All-Area Honors by finishing in the Top-10 at the Area-1 Meet on October 29. Peterson placed eighth at 22:36 while Bonfim crossed the finish line in ninth place at 22:46. Peterson and Bonfim also picked up spots on the Macon Telegraph’s Girls All-Middle Georgia Cross Country Team as Honorable Mentions.

FOOTBALL (6-5) (4-2 Reg. 7)

The FPD varsity football team experienced plenty of ups and downs throughout the 2015 season, but pulled together midway through the year to win their final four regular season games over Tattnall Square, Wilkinson County, Twiggs County and Hancock Central. Those four wins were good enough for a final Class-A Private Power Rating of number 16 and a fifth straight berth in the GHSA Class-A State Tournament. FPD would fall at Prince Avenue, the no. 1 ranked team in the tournament, 41-7 in Bogart, Georgia on November 20.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

The FPD varsity boys cross country captured their sixth straight Area-1 Championship at the Georgia Industrial Children’s Home on October 29.

The Area finish was good for a spot in the GHSA Class-A Private State Meet on November 7 where the Vikings placed twelfth. Altogether, the Vikings finished in the Top-10 in seven of 10 meets throughout the 2015 season.

FPD finished eighth at the Wesleyan Invite on August 29, second at the Stratford Invite on September 15, fifth at the FPD/WRHS Invitational on September 22, fourth at the Strong Rock Invite on October 3, second at the Mount de Sales Cavalier Clash on October 15, eighth at the Last Chance Meet in Carrolton, Georgia on October 24 and first at the Class-A Private Area-1 Meet on October 29.

Will McCormick, Thomas McBride, Daniel Weaver, E. J. Tobler, Torrian Bradley-McSwain, Dontrez Johnson were selected for the All-Region 7-A team. All-Middle Georgia Honorable Mentions went to McCormick, Weaver, Bradley-McSwain, Brad Powell and Thomas McBride. Weaver was also named to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class-A First Team as a Punter, and Reggie Gantt participated in the All-American Offense/Defense All-Star Game. Other awards included the Academic Award given to McCormick; Kaiser “Heart of the Viking” Award given to Tobler; Scout Soldiers Award given to Ryan Jones, Jordan McCallum, Seth Wilson, Blaine Kizer, Josh Raines, Will Ware, Blake Jones, Dillian Rosado, Christian Tinkey, Rob Cunningham, and Jarred Brooks. A special award, the Austin Childers Attitude Award, was given to Dontrez Johnson and presented by Austin’s parents, Chris and Ashley Childrers at the Football Banquet.

Senior Will Martin earned All-Area honors by finishing third at the Area1 Meet with a time of 18:22. Sophomore Dylan Bridges was also named All-Area by claiming fourth at Area with a time of 18:59.

Martin and Bridges also picked up spots on the Macon Telegraph’s Boys All-Middle Georgia Cross Country Team as Honorable Mentions.

On Target With FPD’s New Shooting Sports Team In the fall of 2015, FPD introduced a new Shooting Sports Team coached by John Mark Smith. Most recently, the squad placed third overall in its general division at the GISA State Shotgun Meet after Thanksgiving.

FPD’s top four shooters were Judson Williams, Austin Hartley, Chet Thompson and Ben Kennedy.

The sport allows a new avenue for students in middle school all the way through high school. At last count, the shooting team roster held 21 spots with seven eighth-graders, six freshmen, six juniors and three seniors.

“We understand that this is a process in terms of creating a new team and a new outlet for students,” Smith noted. “This first year really flew by. It was fast paced for everyone as we were trying to get organized and compete at a high level.”

The Vikings participated in a total of six events competing in Skeet, Sporting Clays, and Trap.

“I’m definitely proud of our guys for the work they put in this first season and for our seniors - Christian Holcomb, Jack Renfroe and Jacob Mullis - for the legacy they leave behind in starting a

new program,” commented Smith, “Hopefully that’s a memory that they can be proud of the rest of their lives.”

Even though the Vikings will graduate three seniors, the talent is still immense. As FPD’s newest team, the Viking Shooting Sports Team is definitely on target.

“We just want to keep getting better at our craft,” Smith said.

“That requires work from our guys. They know that and I believe in them.”

Achieving the

“CHILL BUMP FACTOR” FPD’s Award-Winning Marching Band performs to inspire.

The FPD Marching Band won two prestigious awards this year, but for FPD Band Director, Jonathan Baker, that is not what matters. For Mr. Baker, it’s all about the “chill bump factor.”

“I want our musicians to go beyond the ink on white paper,” said Mr. Baker. “I want them to capture the emotion. It’s a matter of playing notes versus making music.”

FPD’s band program has achieved the “chill bump factor” under Mr. Baker’s direction for the past 9 years. Beginning in fifth grade, students are introduced to band, select their instrument of choice, and steadily progress in their abilities.

However, what is central to the program is Mr. Baker’s confidence that the students can go beyond the basics and learn the finesse of music. He has introduced Grade Level 6 literature, the highest level in music competition, to his high school ensemble and placed high at competitions. Usually a school of FPD’s size does not take on music of this caliber, but that does not deter Mr. Baker.

“I’ve had some band directors at competitions tell me that I am not ‘playing the game,’” recalls Mr. Baker. “That if I would just come down a level or two on difficulty then we could win more awards. But that’s not what we are about. I want the students to be challenged; I want them to learn the artistry of music, not just the fundamentals.”

The 2015 Spirit of the Viking Marching Band definitely achieved a new level of artistry this past fall. Since Mr. Baker started at FPD in 2007, he has seen the FPD Marching Band grow from 27 students to 63 students in both middle school and high school.

This year’s performance was a patriotic show that brought a tear to many an eye during the football game half-time shows. It was entitled Letters from a Prisoner of War by composer Randall Standridge and incorporated a heartfelt story of military service set to beautiful music and choreography.

- Jonathan Baker, Band Director “Our band members were a little skeptical that a patriotic - Jonathan Baker, FPD Band Director show would not be original enough,” remembers Mr. Baker, “but after they heard some of the pieces and began practice, they saw it was much more than they anticipated. Soon they were adding in their own extra flashes and the result was something truly amazing.”

It was not only amazing, it was award-winning. The FPD Marching Band took home a first place finish at the Class A Wolverine Classic Marching Invitational and a first place finish at the Class A Golden River Marching Invitational.

These awards were a much-appreciated bonus for the band members who begin practice each year in the hot August sun.

During a two week intensive summer camp, the musicians and the band auxiliaries practice for over eighty hours, learning new music, practicing choreography, and making sure everything is in sync. After school starts, they continue practicing Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and before home games on Friday to fine tune and improve.

“I am extremely proud of what our program has become over the past six years,” comments Drum Major Carine Cerny (‘16).

“In 2010, we marched thirty members and attended one competition. Now, in 2015, I see a strong band of sixty-three who won first in our class at two competitions. The past two years, our band has not only succeeded musically in competition, but has been able to promote FPD through our God-given love for music.”

“In this fast paced world we live in, band is different,” comments Mr. Baker. “Those who stick to it learn tremendous amounts of determination and perseverance. I am very proud of our band.

We have some amazing musicians who work very hard and have achieved some amazing results.”

As the FPD band program continues to grow, one can only look forward to many more determined, talented young musicians and performances that achieve the “chill bump factor.”

At the GHSA Class-A Area-1 Private One-Act Competition on Saturday, October 24, FPD’s performance of “937” ended up in a rare tie for first place. The judges had to go to the third tiebreaker to decide the competition which left FPD as the runner-up. Megan Huggins won Best Actress for her performance as “Elise” in the play 937 while Cullen Cummings took home an All-Star Cast award for his role of “Max Lowe.”

Band

The FPD Marching Band took home a first place finish at the Class A Wolverine Classic Marching Invitational and a first place finish at the Class A Golden River Marching Invitational.

Spring Literary Competition

Several FPD students competed in various categories at the GHSA Class-A State Literary Competition on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Faith Marie Engle (‘15) finished T-1 in Girls Extemporaneous Speaking while Jacob Cardis (‘16) took fourth place in Boys Extemporaneous Speaking.

In the music events, FPD also had a strong showing. FPD’s Girls Trio of Sumner Carlton, Mary Bennet Rose (‘18) and Julia Peavy (‘15) placed third overall and Mary Elizabeth Neisler (‘15) took third in Girls Solo.

The 2016 Region Literary Competition will be March 5 and the State Meet will be March 12.

Susan Ginn and Carla Windham Hills, both of the class of ’75, enjoy a fun trip to Sedona, Arizona with their daughters.

Robert Lunsford’s youngest son, Brent, is a senior at Mercer University, majoring in BioChemical Engineering. His son had the opportunity to spend time in Korea and India this past summer, helping to teach students English, robotics, and other subjects. “I have seen [my son] grow into a fine young man, who also loves to give back to his community,” Lunsford comments. “It’s not too bad getting old when you see that all of your children and grandchildren have done well and will be just fine.”

Dr. Bobbie-Ann SchoffstallThames is married to Dr. Will Thames. They adopted two teenagers from Crimea four years ago. Schoffstall-Thames is the Director of the Hand Therapy & Industrial Rehab Department for PT Solutions in Montgomery, Alabama. She received a post professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy in Administration & Practice Management from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, a Master of Education from Auburn University Montgomery, a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from The Medical College of Georgia, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Mercer University. She and her husband live in the Lake Martin area of Central Alabama.

1977 Bo Bobinski continues to enjoy his new career at Woodward Academy in Atlanta. He and his wife spent Thanksgiving in Colorado visiting their son who is stationed at Peterson AFB. Bobinski says, “I took the opportunity to do a little hiking to include the trek up the Pike’s Peak incline Thanksgiving morning when temps were in the low single digits!”

Lauren Geddings Halvorsen’s oldest daughter, Lindsey, graduated from Kennesaw State University with a degree in Psychology in May 2015.

Maribeth Watwood is dean of the Graduate College at Northern Arizona University (NAU). She accepted the position last January and is loving the new appointment. Maribeth and her husband, Stefan Sommer, are getting used to their “empty nest” as their youngest son, Robin, is now a freshman at NAU. Older son, Linden, is a junior at the University of Arizona.

Their daughter, Rowan, and her husband, Andrew, are expecting Watwood’s first grandchild in February.

Chip Greene is starting his twentyfifth year as owner of Greene & Associates, a commercial plumbing, heating, and air conditioning contractor. He and his wife Susie live in Bolingbroke, Georgia with their 16-year-old son, Jimmy. Their daughter, Ashton, is 23 years old and is living in Smyrna, Georgia, just outside Atlanta. Greene was recently installed as national president of the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors National Association.

Roxanne Uptagrafft Oppy was married to McLain (Mac) Oppy on December 27, 2014. At the wedding, Roxanne was given away by her children, Hayden and Constance Sermons. Robert Ivey’s book, Letters to my Daughter, is being published by Blue Lyra Review on February 15, 2016. It will be featured in Volume 1 of the Delphi Series of books.

Mack Loyd and Katie Mathews (‘99) Loyd currently live in Macon with their son, Hale. After graduating from UGA with a master’s degree in clinical social work, Katie works as a counselor at Georgia Cancer Specialists, affiliated with Northside Hospital of Atlanta. Mack obtained a degree in computer science, then followed in the footsteps of generations before him performing welding inspection on natural gas lines throughout the state of Georgia.

Caroline Seymour ‘03 Grebert and her husband, Lionel, joyously announce the birth of their son, Caden Atticus. Caden arrived on October 6, 2015, weighing 7 pounds and measuring 20 inches long. The Greberts reside in The Woodlands, Texas.

Rockin’ Her Way to

Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 Jessica Walden (‘96) remembers a distinct day in fifth grade when she sat embarrassed at her desk while her father, music producer Alan Walden, spoke at career day. “He looked like Willie Nelson at the time,” recalls Walden, “long hair, beard, and often wore a raw hide headband! I used to be so embarrassed at how different he looked from other fathers.”

However, this quickly changed when her father finished his presentation by giving out 45 LPs to everyone who heard him speak. Her embarrassment turned to inspiration.

In 2011, Walden followed her father’s love for music and started a music heritage tour company, Rock Candy Tours, with her husband Jamie Weatherford (’93). The tours focus on Macon’s rich music history, tracing the footsteps of legends who came out of Macon while also showcasing the downtown area.

“My husband and I started our business in direct response to the closure of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame,” says Walden.

“Our reasoning was to set out and prove that Macon’s music history doesn’t have to live within an institution’s walls. It’s on our street corners. It’s on our sidewalks. And if our walls could talk, they would sing.”

Today Rock Candy Tours has grown from a fun side project to a well-known cultural attraction for Macon. With the help of two additional tour guides, Walden and Weatherford offer two regular tours per week – a “Free Birds and Night Owls” tour on Friday evenings and a “Rock n’ Roll Stroll” on Saturday morning along with private tours for groups.

Her work with Rock Candy Tours was accompanied by an additional position as Director of Communications with Macon’s College Hill Corridor where she coordinated branding initiatives and promotion of the organization’s inspiring revitalization work in Downtown Macon. Together, these roles caught the attention of Georgia Trend magazine who presented her with a prestigious spot in their 2015 selection of Georgia’s “40 under 40.”

The award was quite an honor for Walden and 2016 holds even more possibilities. The grant that funded the College Hill Corridor work is coming to a close and while the organization’s work will continue, Walden is transitioning to a new role with a non-profit out of Washington, D.C. called EveryoneOn. The focus of her work will be on digital inclusion and access to home Internet for the under-served in the Macon community.

And, as icing on the cake, the state of Georgia just named 2016 the Year of Georgia Music with a heavy focus on music tourism.

That’s music to the ears for Walden and Weatherford’s Rock Candy Tours. The couple hopes Rock Candy Tours can serve as a statewide leader and point of reference.

Reflecting on her career that has been fueled by passion, Walden offers this advice to current FPD students, “Find that unique talent and make that the driving force of your life. Start looking for that love and don’t just try to make a career out of it. Make it a means to do something right.”

2004 Kris Hattaway Vaughn became executive director of GeorgiaForward, a statewide nonprofit working as a catalyst to unite Georgia through partnerships and collaborations in August 2015. Kris is no stranger to GeorgiaForward having been a member of the inaugural class of their leadership action program, Young Gamechangers, and having been on loan to lead the second year of the program. Kris remains involved in the Middle Georgia community with the Junior League of Macon, Macon Rotary Club and the Ocmulgee Land Trust. She and her husband Ben are active members of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church.

Alex Thigpin and Suzanne Seymour (‘07) Thigpin were married on May 10, 2014. They live in Macon, Georgia. Alex is the owner/agent of Alex Thigpin State Farm located in Middle Georgia.

He has positioned himself as one of the top new agents company wide. Suzanne is a registered nurse at Vein Specialists of the South.

Holly Long Fister and her husband, Captain Thomas Fister (USAF), welcomed Lyla Joy into the world on April 22, 2015. She weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces and hasn’t stopped smiling since.

2007

Chandler Lee married Brittney Pickard on October 10, 2015 at Morgan View Farms in Bolingbroke, Georgia.

Caroline Wicker Jackson and husband, Kelly, welcomed their first child, Nora Lynn Jackson, in March 2015.

Laurel Martin Dominy married her best friend, Brad Dominy, on November 7, 2015. They took a honeymoon cruise the following week to Cozumel, Mexico, and Georgetown, Grand Cayman.

Tim Hall is in the process of making his second film. Named “Born River Bye,” it is a story about “personal growth” as two main characters return home over a long weekend.

Daniel Slocumb married Suzanne Intorcia on October 17, 2015 at Vineville Methodist Church in Macon, Georgia. The reception was at the Armory Ballroom.

Alie Viviani is now a Family Nurse Practitioner working at the CVS Minute Clinic in Savannah, Georgia.

She finished up school with a master’s degree in nursing last year from South University in Savannah, Georgia.

Viviani comments, “I love helping people. The Christian education and people from FPD taught me how to love everyone and care for everyone with an open heart.”

Zach Jones married Kensington Shimandle on November 28, 2015.

Blake Lewis married Hannah Pollett on June 6, 2015 at Wind Clan Farm in Juliette, Georgia. Hannah currently works as a ParaPro in the Oconee Primary School, while Blake continues to work as the After School Director at Colham Ferry Elementary School.

The couple continues to pursue their respective degrees in Education and reside in Athens, Georgia.

Weathers Veazey and her father, Bob Veazey attended the first 2016 Presidential Debate in Cleveland, Ohio as the guests of the Republican National Committee. A third year Law Student at Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law, Ms. Veazey was selected for the Republican Leadership Initiative.

She has served as Secretary of the Cumberland Republicans, was twice elected as Chairman of the College Republicans and statewide as Vice-Chair of the Alabama Federation of College Republicans.

Amy Gainey was married December 12, 2015 to Matthew Spinks.

Suzanne Jared Foxworth married Ashley Hand on June 13, 2015, at the Stover House in Braselton, Georgia. They are residing in Louisville, Kentucky, where Jared is a student at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Anna Katherine Wright and Michael Ross were married in October at a ceremony in Franklin, Tennessee.

Anna Katherine works in the corporate office of Tractor Supply as a Recruiting Coordinator; Michael is completing his final year as a law student at Vanderbilt University.

Devin Lavender and Marissa McCranie were engaged on November 8, 2015. Marissa graduated in December with a Bachelors Degree in Human Development and Family Science from UGA. Devin is entering his final year of Pharmacy School at UGA. The couple plans to marry in July 2016.

Tyler Lewis graduated from Georgia College in Milledgeville in May 2015 with a BS in Psychology.

He has completed several missionary trips abroad. He will spend the next twelve months in Seoul, Korea as a teacher of the English language. Upon his return to the US, he intends to complete his master’s degree in psychology.

Grace Tinkey runs for Adams State in Colorado and her Cross Country team won the NCAA Div II National Cross Country Championship on November 21 in Joplin, Missouri. Tinkey also made All American and All Regional and All Conference this year. Tinkey is a graphic design student with a photography emphasis.

Airplanes, Affleck, and Africa How FPD Alumnus Scott Terry’s Global Flight Relief brings aid to Eastern Africa.

For Scott Terry (‘81), flying an airplane is not just a means of transportation, it’s a means of finding a solution.

After ten years as a US Naval Aviator, Terry joined the aeronautics industry, working for both Flight International, Inc. and Bombardier Aerospace before starting his own company, Tempus Jets. January 2016 marks Tempus Jet’s ninth anniversary; it is now one of the world’s leading aviation service providers specializing in Aircraft Sales and Leasing, Flight Operations, and Engineering Services But Terry isn’t just making an impact in the aviation industry, he is also bringing hope to millions through a non-profit he founded named Global Flight Relief. Global Flight Relief is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to “provide humanitarian relief and emergency response through the application of aviation assets.”

During his years in the aviation industry and serving in the Navy, Terry witnessed firsthand the atrocities on communities during political unrest and cross border conflicts as well as the devastating effects of natural disasters, especially famines resulting in human migration. Now he is honored to be able to help provide relief.

“I always said that if I ever had the resources that I would establish some sort of disaster response or emergency action air fleet,” remembers Terry. “Once I determined that I could invest in this sort of idea, I needed a project to convince me to pull the trigger.”

Fortunately, the timing was coincidental with the establishment of the Eastern Congo Initiative by actor and director, Ben Affleck.

Affleck founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 to combat the humanitarian crisis in the Congo. He partnered with Terry’s Global Flight Relief to provide logistics support for ECI initiatives in Congo and Rwanda. These operations soon grew to include the transport of medical supplies and personnel to the region

using both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters throughout East Africa. In 2012, Global Flight Relief acquired a Lockheed L–1011 — also known as ‘The Flying Hospital’ — which features four operating rooms, 16 pre- and post-op beds, a pharmacy, and more.

The Endeavor Awards were established by Angel Flight West, a Volunteer Pilot Organization, and honor volunteer pilots and organizations that coordinate their gifts of flight to serve those in need.

Terry remains humble about the award. “As I mentioned during my acceptance speech in LA,” comments Terry, “I’m just the guy who happens to have access to the resources to make things happen. It’s really the people who are executing the plan that need to be recognized.”

With that same level of humility, Terry offers this to current FPD students, “I’m not one to dole out advice, but I’d probably say if you have an idea and you think it’s a good one, go after it. If it’s hard work, that’s probably an indication you are on the right track.”

It is easy to imagine there are millions of people who are grateful that Terry went after his idea.

Homecoming It was great to see so many of our alumni at FPD’s 2015 Homecoming. The Friday evening dinner at the Wilson-Anderson Family Pavilion was filled with cheer and warm wishes. The Saturday Day School Dash and Legacy Lunch were both wonderful ways to catch up with our alumni and highlight the many ways FPD’s campus has grown.

It is encouraging to see and hear of the positive things FPD’s alumni are doing in their own communities and to meet their spouses and children. FPD’s alumni are changing the world for God’s glory and Homecoming is always a special time to see God’s plan in action.

Homecoming Awards

Distinguished Alumni Award - Cpl. Adam Michie (‘00)

The Distinguished Alumni Award goes to an alumnus/alumna who has made an outstanding contribution through his/her vocation or who otherwise deserves to be recognized for outstanding achievement in some field or endeavor – an individual who has “changed the world for God’s glory.”

Cpl. Adam Michie (’00) has been with the Macon Bibb county fire department for 12 years. On February 11, 2015, Cpl. Michie responded to a call that forever changed his life. In the midst of battling the blaze, a floor collapse trapped Cpl. Michie’s friend and co-worker, Lt. Randy Parker. Tragically, Lt. Parker lost his life. Cpl. Michie and several others were injured during the rescue efforts.

Throughout those harrowing moments, he remained intent on doing everything he could to save his friend. His determination to save his friend has now turned into a determination to bring honor to his legacy. He feels God has called him to be an encourager to his fellow firefighters, to help them understand why they are still on earth and Lt. Parker is in heaven. He hopes that, through this tragedy, others will come to Christ. Cpl. Michie is married to fellow FPD alum, Jessie Michie (’00). They have been married for 14 years and have three daughters, Carolina, Haylee, and Jessa.

Service Award - Mr. Frank Carl Amerson III

The FPD Service Award goes to an individual who has shown continued service and support to First Presbyterian Day School. This award is presented on an annual basis, if candidates are deemed worthy.

Carl Amerson and his wife, Janice, have been steadfast supporters of FPD for many years. They are the parents of one daughter, Traci Johnson, and three sons, Cameron Dennard, Frank Carl Amerson IV, and FPD alum Chandler Amerson (’05). Mr. Amerson currently serves on FPD’s Board of Visitors and has supported the Golf Tournament and GOAL Program through the years. He and Janice are members of the Day School Society and grandparents to FPD 11th grader Morgan Mullis and alumnus Bradley Mullis (‘14). They have two other grandchildren, Carson Dennard and Kamryn Dennard. His company, Amerson Construction Company, has been an integral part of the huge growth of the FPD campus and has provided their expertise in building the Middlebrooks Athletic Center, the Girardeau Field House, the Clark Fine Arts Center, the High School Building, and the Jones Family International Residence among others. FPD is pleased to award Mr. Amerson with this year’s FPD Service Award.

Homecoming Court Queen’s Court - Griffin Sappe, Addison Arnold Freshman Representative - Haley Harden Sophomore Representative - Porter Bolles Junior Representative - Caroline Brittain Senior Candidates - Anna Roddenberry, Summer Sanders, Molly Smith, Brynna Wilson Homecoming Queen - Miss Sydney Reese. Sydney is the daughter of Dr. Brian Reese and Rosalind Reese. Sydney has been a member of the basketball and tennis teams, a class officer for four years, and a varsity cheerleader for two years. She is a Student Ambassador, member of National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Project Lead, National Society of High School Scholars, and the US Senate Youth Program. Sydney attends Beulahland Bible Church. The Bible verse she selected for Homecoming was Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

FPD Family

Four Decades of Vikings

Members of the Wilson family have been a part of the FPD history since 1975 - whether serving as board member, faculty members, or attending school as students. The patriarch and matriarch of the family, Dr. Larry and Mrs. Rinda Wilson would have it no other way.

When it was time to enroll their oldest son David in PreKindergarten, Dr. and Mrs. Wilson both agreed that there was no question as to which school David and their other children would attend. Due to its Christian foundation, First Presbyterian Day School was the only logical choice they saw.

“The heart of their day was at school,” recalled Rinda, speaking of her children. “It was too important of a time span to not reinforce what was taught at home.”

Dr. Larry and Rinda wanted to make sure their children heard God’s word while at school. “I wanted them to have a solid foundation,” comments Rinda. “By the time they got to college, I knew it would be a real challenge spiritually. I wanted to give them as much support as I could while they were in school.”

All three of Dr. Larry and Rinda’s children attended FPD. David graduated in ‘89, followed by Chris in ’93, and Summer in ‘97.

Adding to their FPD connections, each Wilson child married an FPD alum and all of their school-age grandchildren now attend FPD. David married Alexis Powell (’90). They have three children, twins Brynna and Josh (12th), and Law (7th). Chris Wilson married Hope James (’94). They have two children Maddie James (2nd) and Lola Grace (6th). Summer married Brian Corrigan (’97). They now have three children, Wilson

(3rd), Ty (4K), and baby Hallie Blair Corrigan, and are expecting a third son in April.

“I am thankful my parents chose FPD for my education for many reasons,” comments David Wilson. “Most importantly is the Christian based education I received prepared me for life in a very secular world. Now as a parent of FPD students, I realize the academic environment is second to none. With [FPD’s] blue ribbons and tablets, what school locally or even regionally provides a better value? Answer: None.”

In 2013, Dr. Larry and Rinda paired with longtime friends Sharon and Jet Anderson to help fund the Wilson-Anderson Family Pavilion, a beautiful covered pavilion that now serves as a gathering place for family and friends at FPD’s George S. Johnson Stadium. The space aptly commemorates the long legacy of family and friendship the Wilsons have at FPD. While their immediate family is large, their extended FPD family is even larger. Their hope for the pavilion is that it provides a welcoming space for others to feel the love they have felt at FPD for so many years.

“As Christian parents, it is important for us to pass the torch,” states Rinda, “Culture says, ‘Believe in yourself.’ ‘You can do anything.’ ‘All you need is love.’ Culture removes God from the center. We have to give our children something to come back to. We have to remind them that God is at the center.”

Letter from the 2015-2016 Chairman

As the School year opened this fall, I realized that Lucia and I had reached a significant point in our lives. For the first time in 19 years, we did not have a child enrolled at FPD. For the first time there was not someone to pick up or drop off, a performance to go see, a game or a team to go cheer for or teachers to visit. Thanks to the dedication and support of FPD’s outstanding, and award winning, faculty and staff, our family has been blessed by all of these experiences.

In those 19 years, I watched the school grow physically, adding the Clark Fine Arts building, the MAC, the new high school, the Fine Arts addition, the updated football stadium and track, The Jones Family International House and many other wonderful improvements over the years. I have also seen the faculty grow in size. Their level of expertise in their chosen field is only out matched by their love for their Lord and Savior. I have watched the student body grow and change, becoming more diverse in the process. I have watched the small school that I left in 1981 become something that looks like a small college campus today.

Many of our out of town alumni return and walk around in wonder at what God has done for FPD. Despite not having someone at FPD, I am still committed to FPD’s mission and vision. As an alumna and as an alumni parent, I have seen the value and worth that FPD has given to my children and to me. We received a quality education from Christian men and women who I know prayed for our success. I will always be grateful for the wonderful foundation that FPD has given each of my children and to me.

The 2015-2016 Board of Trustees is likewise committed to the mission and vision of the School. This Board recently finished a master plan for the campus and is working on some new and significant projects for the School. In the coming months we will tell you more about the master plan and about the exciting new projects, projects which are directly related to our master plan. We have been blessed by God’s grace and favor over the years. We have grown significantly. We see a bright future. We continue to strive to make FPD the best Christian education in the country while always seeking to do God’s will and give Him the glory.

The Board and I want to thank all of you who have made this possible through your giving and support this past school year.

2014-2015 Annual Report

The FPD Annual Fund is the avenue through which our families and friends are able to enrich the educational experiences of the students at FPD. This fund allows us to enhance resources and opportunities beyond the basic educational costs covered by tuition. Gifts to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund were used for several substantial improvements to the FPD campus and educational experience. Completed projects include the reinstallment of the FPD Educational Gardens, lockers for the band room, improved tables and stools for the Elementary Art Room, a renovated lobby for the Kindergarten Building, new Smart Boards for all elementary classrooms, and many other projects.

Dr. Richards was the pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1956-1972. He and several visionaries had a dream to open a Christ-centered college preparatory school. The John E. Richards Society was established to glorify God and to honor Richards’ role in the founding of FPD. The John E. Richards Society provides financial resources to FPD through planned giving. Making a planned gift is a simple way to ensure that the vision of FPD will continue not only today but also for generations to come.

The Society

There are six ways to join: • Prepare a will with a bequest, remainder trust, gift annuity, lead trust and/or retained life estate plan.

• Leave a gift to FPD in your will.

• Consider using assets such as stocks, bonds, investments other than cash for your charitable gift. Such gifts may provide additional tax advantages.

• Name FPD as the beneficiary of your individual retirement account or pension plan.

• Name FPD as the beneficiary of a new or existing life insurance policy.

• Remember deceased loved ones with endowed memorial gifts to FPD.

2014-2015 Annual Report

Under a Georgia state law established in 2008, taxpayers are able to re-direct a portion of their state income tax payment to provide need-based tuition assistance. FPD has partnered with the GOAL Scholarship Program to help facilitate the provisions of the law. This program allows FPD to provide need-based financial assistance to eligible students. The Investing in Our Future Campaign began in 2010 with the goal of raising $4,000,000 for much-needed improvements on campus including expansion of the weight room, the two-story addition to the Clark Fine Arts Center, the athletic practice field adjacent to the football stadium, the George Peake and Ann Peake Cross Country Trail, the Dick Frame Track Complex renovation, and improvements to the George S. Johnson Stadium and Austin Childers Field including the Wilson-Anderson Family Pavilion.

Statement of Giving 2014-2015 Annual Fund The FPD Annual Fund consists of three kinds of gifts - restricted, unrestricted, and gifts in kind. The following charts show the breakdown of the last fiscal year in type of gift as well as by program/category. Gifts may be designated for academics, athletics, fine art, facilities or miscellaneous or “other” categories. The charts reflect how restricted gifts were designated and how unstricted gifts were expensed. The funds work like a checking account in that any gifts not spent in a given year roll over to the next year. Many times, restricted funds are encumbered for ongoing projects. The total number of donors to the Annual Fund was 765.

Letter from the CFO

Charlie Parrish One of my favorite Old Testament accounts is the introduction of Rebekah in Genesis 24. When Abraham’s entourage arrived in Rebekah’s home town, Abraham’s servant asked Rebekah for a drink of water from the pitcher she was carrying. Rebekah dutifully responded and then, without hesitation, voluntarily went beyond what was asked of her, and took on the laborious task of quenching the thirst of all ten of their camels.

What a daunting task for one person! Ten camels can consume up to 300 gallons of water at a time. Using her single pitcher, Rebekah would have made up to 60 trips to the well, carrying back a 40-50 lb. jug full of water with each trip. Rebekah saw a need and was generous and determined enough to fulfill it.

Rebekah’s story compares to our story, as a faithful givers to FPD’s mission to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory.

Such a mission is, at minimum, a lofty one. Some may even give way to explaining how such a mission is impossible.

If Rebekah’s story teaches us anything, it is that God can do big, difficult and expensive things through us, despite the size of the task or the weaknesses that we claim, when we are Kingdom minded and when we respond to His calling.

There are several key areas in which FPD remains committed, so that the mission is sustained. We are committed to retaining and attracting the most qualified Christian educators available. To accomplish this, we seek to be as aggressive as possible with salaries and benefits, which claims 60% of the operating budget. We remain committed to the enhancement of academic programs that have a lasting impact on our students. In the past five years, spending has increased 63% toward classroom resources and teaching tools that are essential to a Christ-centered, college preparatory education. We remain committed to assisting families with tuition, where there is a demonstrated and legitimate financial need. In 2014-15, 33% of our enrolled eligible students (grades 1-12) received some level of assistance from this worthy program. We remain committed to building long term financial strength, so that our kindergarten students can be assured of the same Christ-centered, college preparatory education that our recent graduates enjoyed. For nearly twenty consecutive years, the operating fund performance has been strong enough to provide for the building of reserves, adding $126,325 in 2014-15.

God continues to bless FPD abundantly with near capacity enrollment, faithful giving support and a strengthening financial foundation. The forward momentum that God has provided toward achieving this goal is nothing short of remarkable! How wonderful is it that God is using us for such a mighty purpose! Thank you for your sacrificial commitment toward this effort. Let’s move forward faithfully, committed to the mission and inspired by what God can do through us for His kingdom.
