Growing Deeper in God’s Grace 2015 has been a year of growing deeper in our true understanding, and experience of, God’s lavish grace, here at Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church!

Highlights of 2015 include: • An Interim of shared Pastoral Responsibilities with Rev. Tyler VanHorn.

• Developing Healthier Finances (See Business Ministry report on page 19.)

• Providing leadership for Session & Deacons.

• Overseeing Pastoral Care.

• A variety of staff transitions.

• Deeper integration of Grace of Christ & Gracia de Cristo.

• Growing discipleship and outreach opportunities – essentially our mission of Glorifying God through equipping disciples to love and serve our neighbors.

• Continued leadership for our Presbytery’s Pastoral Ordination Team.

Delighting in a new, grace-filled marriage to Norm Shively! - After a year of loss and grief, the Lord provided this amazing gift. Thank you to all who so lovingly helped our wedding be a joyous, God-honoring celebration! Thank you for sharing in our joy, and for your continued prayers and support!

As we live fully into 2016, I know we will continue to see God’s grace and provision, guiding us as a congregation.

More than anything, may we all pursue Jesus, both individually and corporately. I saw on a friend’s wall, “The level of intimacy we have with God determines the level of impact we will make with our life.” It reminded me of Jesus’ words in John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

I am confident the Lord will guide the work of our Pastor Nominating Committee in providing the right person to lead our congregation into the next chapter of ministry and mission. Please keep this process in your prayers!

Gracia de Cristo Our Spanish speaking church has officially changed their name from Cristo Vive to Gracia de Cristo. Join us in the Sanctuary Sundays at 1:00 pm for worship!

— Alex Rule Adams Elementary School Gracia de Cristo members continue with hands-on support at Adams Elementary School through Bulldog Hugs, Family Movie Night, as well as Serving breakfast at monthly PTO meetings. Under the leadership of Rosalie Dubrau, 15 Volunteers participated in the reading program every week.

Worship in the Sanctuary On June 7, Gracia de Cristo began meeting in the Sanctuary which presented a more worshipful atmosphere. We are blessed to meet in the garden room for fellowship around the tables after the worship services. Various guest and members are taking advantage of the prayer room to pray for each other’s needs.

Hiking Trip In August, eight youth and three adults spent a day experiencing God’s creation by visiting Lake Tipsoo, the Grove of the Patriarchs, and the Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park. For most, this was a life changing experience being their first visit to this beautiful area which is so different from their daily experiences in the city.

ESL Classes ESL classes formerly held at Madison House moved to our church facilities with increased participation on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday mornings.

Connecting Ministries — Jocelyn Larsen

One of my favorite parts of Connecting Ministries is getting to connect with new people in our church family. I love reaching out to visitors, discovering where they’re at spiritually, and sharing the Good News with them however the Holy Spirit leads. Times have changed.

Most of our visitors now are unchurched seekers, people looking for hope and peace and God during hard times (rather than churched families looking for a place to plug-in). So this year we updated the snail mail letter we send to visitors, changing the tone from ‘formal, business-like’ to ‘personal, familial, warm.’ It ends with a simple invitation just to have coffee with me or a pastor.

I also send a personal, hand-written note to each and every visitor, just to say ‘thanks for worshipping, praying, singing, growing, loving alongside us on a Sunday morning.’ While these changes may seem small, we love how they communicate our vision and heart in a way that will connect more authentically with the people who receive them every week of the year.

I also love getting to know our New Covenant Partners personally and coming alongside each of them as they dive into our community and find their best fit as they minister among us. I have been especially encouraged at the willingness of some of them to move quickly from a ‘newbie’ to an ‘old-timer,’ helping me reach out to visitors and New-er Covenant Partners when my load gets too much for me!

My other favorite part of Connecting Ministries is to give spiritual, personal, and leadership support and development to lay-leaders who are already serving here.

This has been both the most challenging and the most rewarding part of my first year of Connecting Ministries in its newest rendition. The highlights for me were: • Quiet Service: a contemplative place & time set aside to give attention to God mid-week (Wednesdays 12noon – 12:40 in the sanctuary), especially for those of us with busy lives and busy jobs and busy kids!

Silence, a short teaching, directed & reflective prayer, and communion round out our brief, but meaningful time together.

• 5 Mondays: an ongoing summer conversation among 16 young women where we tackled a different pragmatic topic each week.

• The Enneagram classes: 15 of us began a journey of greater self-awareness (with the purpose of greater love for God and others!) using a spiritual temperament sorter that has been one of the most helpful tools for my personal life with God.

Family Ministries — Shan Trick

Parenting Class

In 2015 we offered two eight-week classes in the Spring and Fall where 71 men and women attended parenting classes.

This is a community outreach where 95% of the participants are coming from extreme cases of addictions, issues with Child Protective Services, teenage moms, recent divorce and other reasons that draw in parents who are desperate for help. Most of these people don’t have a church home and for some, it’s the first time they’ve been in a church building.

They are met right away by wonderful, loving, warm smiles we call table mentors ready to embrace them and share God’s love. Each class has five or six table captains who pray for and are in community with their table mates each week. Their main job is to pray for each participant at their table and help guide conversation by the certified parenting teacher Mary Pleger. At the end of class, each person receives a Jesus story book Bible and adult Bible.

Restored hope that we are in control of our money, not money over us.

As they say the “proof is in the pudding.” Here’s a prime example of that from a survey that was taken at the end of class. These results are calculated during the time participants are in the nine-week class.

Based on 30 people who took the survey: • Non-mortgage debt paid: $91,922.34 • Closed and cut up credit cards: 35 • People who substantially changed their giving: 5 • First time givers: 4 The next FPU class will be offered in January of 2017.

Marriage Ministry

Next class will begin February 3 at 6 pm in the David Ferry Lounge. All are welcome.

Financial Peace University

In 2015 we offered two nine-week classes in January and September. Around 150 people attended classes. This is also an outreach that is advertised in the community and beyond.

We’ve learned people want to get out of debt and learn how to follow biblical principles so they can be more generous with their money. Here’s a testimony from a class participant: 6

Barney and Shan Trick helped host an intense marriage class called Love After Marriage at Open Bible Christian Center in Yakima in September. There were 19 couples from Washington State, Montana, and Australia who attended this life changing workshop. Because of the incredible transformation couples experienced from this ministry, Barney and Shan received additional training in January through Nothing Hidden Ministries in Redding, CA. The purpose of the training will be to bring back wonderful curriculum and support to train up couples who have the heart to disciple other couples who are in crisis in their marriages or couples who have issues they need to work on. Also we will offer small group marriage classes later on this year. Our goal is to kick off couples training this spring.

We look forward to who God will bring to help in this ministry.

Senior Adult Ministries

Kaffee Klatsch SENIOR ADULT MINISTRIES has been active during the 2015 year by sponsoring monthly Kaffee Klatsch meetings and the Annual Veterans’ Dinner. While Kaffee Klatsch is often considered to be an opportunity for senior church participants, the Kaffee Klatsch gatherings have been designed to be informative as well as entertaining for anyone who would like to participate. Financially, this group does no fund raising nor does it cost the church anything more than the use of the facilities and coffee for the monthly meetings. In a cost saving effort, the SAM members provide refreshments from within the group.

The Annual Veterans’ Dinner featured a speaker, Charles Weedin, and a meal which was prepared by Evie’s Catering. Participants paid for their meals. Again, there was no cost to the church beyond the use of the facilities, printed programs (beautifully designed by Ericka) and the custodial help.

Senior Adult Ministries is designed to provide a monthly time of fellowship (September through May) for anyone who would like to attend. Programs vary greatly from health and safety concerns to light entertainment. Jon Waite has graciously provided an organ concert for the December meetings for the last few years. Efforts are consistently being made to include residents of Mabel Swan Manor.

Kaffee Klatsch: The Haywire Outfit Band is coming back! Yahoo!

It won’t be long before primroses start showing up in the shops. Their brilliant colors always brighten our world while the last bits of winter often continue to bring gray days. Buying a basket or two for your coffee table always adds a bit of zest to one’s world.

Another way to brighten your life is to come to the February Kaffee Klatsch. You’ll get a chance to hear...

The Haywire Outfit Band on February 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Room.

Derek Smith and his fellow musicians have planned a concert of Blue Grass Gospel music. Knowing how we love them, they’ve also included time for a sing-a-long. How much better can life get?

Some of you may have heard this group last year. If you did, you’ll remember a happy afternoon of toe tapping and smiles across the room. It was such a success that they are back by popular demand.

Mark your calendar for this delightful event. Everyone is welcome. There’s no charge other than a kind word for the person sitting next to you. As always, it helps us do a better job of planning for refreshments if you sign up at the Connection Center. However, if you forget to do that, please come and join us anyway. We’re pretty sure you’ll leave carrying a bit of sunshine in your heart as well as finding that your spirits have been greatly lifted.

Women’s Ministries — Shan Trick

Women’s Ministry 2015

March Spring Retreat: Our incredible speaker, Wendy Backlund and her team from Redding, CA., shared a powerful message about our beliefs and being transformed by the renewing of our mind towards Christ Jesus. There were about 100 women who participated in the daylong event.

The local worship band Avory began Friday night with a concert and opened Saturday morning in worship and praise to our King.

Workshops included: Identity: to truly know ourselves, we must first truly know Him, and then know that we are truly known by Him. Beliefs: In this workshop we had some teaching on listening prayer to learn how to recognize when God is speaking to us. Declarations: Ten basic declarations foundational to the building of your faith, increase expectancy of God’s goodness; and, thus, will increase the manifestation of that goodness in your life.

Community Outreach: Women’s Ministry Team supported LOVE INC. through volunteering during the summer.

Bible Studies: which included “Me, Myself, and Lies,” by Jennifer Rothschild and “Fashioned to Reign,” by Kris Vallotton.

Community Events: Our Women’s Ministry Team has learned that there is a real need and hunger for women to be in community with each other while sharing and learning more about Jesus. As a result, we hosted a catered luncheon in October where 130 ladies from the community attended.

Our speaker, Robin Biddlecomb spoke to us about Fierce Love, an exchange, not just of His love for us but how we are to reciprocate that love, not just to Jesus but to each other.

Student Ministries — Kelsey Schmidt

Looking Back at 2015 This year has been full of transition for our youth.

Beloved youth director, Jeff Murray, moved on to a new job in September. The students still refer to him often, we talk about how much we all miss him, and we feel his absence. Change is always hard, especially when it means someone we loved leaving their post.

But in the midst of transition and difficulty, our group continues to amaze me. The students still come each week and listen and wrestle and grow and learn to love each other well. I still hear them say that they feel youth group is a safe place and that it’s like a family. It is a joy and an immense honor to walk alongside them during this time, to share life, to hang out and laugh, to play ping pong, to cry together, and to figure out the Jesus way with them.

We’ve continued Wednesday night youth group, which includes a shared meal, game time, and learning about who Jesus is, what He’s doing in the world around us, and how we can be a part of it. We’ve shaken up Sundays a bit by asking our youth to join us in our 9:30 worship service and spend 30 minutes afterwards discussing what they heard, praying for one another, and refueling for the week ahead. We’ve also continued some of our favorite traditions and events, like our fall retreats, ugly Christmas sweater party, and of course, lots of dodgeball. We plan to participate in 30 Hour Famine again in February and to embark on a high school mission trip this spring. Youth ministry is an area that is constantly changing, as students graduate and leaders move on, but God is faithful in every season and we continue to see Him work in and through us as we love one another.

Children’s Ministry — Susie Woodin

• Support the family in their responsibility for the spiritual development and growth of their child.

• Develop, nurture, teach, and guide children to become disciples for Christ.

Palm Sunday, Tell Me the Story: KidZone presented the amazing story of God’s plan for our lives through Jesus Christ...the best story ever!

Everest VBS: Six Super Summer Sundays dedicated to learning to conquer challenges through God’s mighty power! The entire congregation embarked on this mountain adventure discovering God’s promises and power… touching lives, changing hearts and drawing us closer to Christ.

Child-Sized Christmas Service: A Night like No Other – KidZone kicked off the Christmas holiday with this popular service. It was a great blessing to celebrate that special night of Jesus’ birth with our kids leading in worship.

Sunday Morning KidZone – Welcome aboard… this fall we set sail on a grand adventure in KidZone with Deep Blue Kids - a program with exciting stories, science experiments, arts, crafts, animated videos, and games – all combined into a faith experience that helps children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today!

Mission and Outreach: Yakima Fire Department, Operation Christmas Child, Salvation Army Angel Tree, and Compassion International are just a few of the projects we have participated in for over 20 years.

Early Learning Zone Coordinator: Monnie Miller

Our ELZ staff continue to provide the highest quality of love and care for children ages birth through Kindergarten. Many of the programs within our church would not be possible without this wonderful ministry. In addition, the ELZ staff serves our entire community through a variety of service projects.

Children’s Ministries Staff: Regretfully, we said goodbye

to Michele Lenderman after 12 years of faithful service. With her departure, we are blessed with the addition of Melissa Gray to the Children’s Ministries staff. We look forward to her expanded role within this department over the coming months.

OUR CUBBIE’S CLASSROOM NEEDS YOUR HELP! We are in need of 4-6 parents who would be willing to commit to serving in the Cubbies classroom on a regular basis (at least one time per month) through the remainder of this school year.

Please prayerfully consider being part of this classroom. There is no greater gift that you can share with a child than the gift of Jesus. We need your help now in building the faith of our next generation of believers.

Board of Directors: Our volunteer advisory Board of Directors support this program and help make important decisions regarding staffing and programming. For the 2014-15 school year our board members were: June Lally, Andrea McCoy, Toni Thompson, Jennifer Perrault, Katrine Schraan, and Susie Woodin. For the 201516 school year our board members are: June Lally, Andrea McCoy, Katrine Schraan, Jennifer Perrault, Toni Thompson, Mary Sundquist, Kerri Sevigny, Cindy Shively, and Susie Woodin.

We finished up our 2014-15 school year with four classes: Two Pre-Kindergarten classes, one Four-Year-Old Class, and one Three-Year-Old Class. We also offered chapel time, music and P.E. We also continued with our after school enrichment “Kid’s Club.” With the 2015-16 school year in progress we have five classes: One Pre-Kindergarten class, two Four-Year-Old classes, and two Three-Year-Old classes. We also include a chapel time, music and P.E. This new school year we introduced a 5th day option for our Pre-Kindergarten class focusing on science. We have a parent who comes in on Fridays, Dr. Amy Ballance, who leads these children in experiments showing them God’s wonderful creation.

Children who are a part of this program begin their education journey with a strong foundation for learning throughout their life. They are well equipped to begin kindergarten. We receive numerous reports back from school districts stating that the children who have come to them from our preschool are far ahead of any other students entering kindergarten. Here at Grace of Christ Preschool we help children to develop awareness and confidence in God’s love and power, to encourage a positive self-image, to develop confidence in abilities, to encourage the ability to function as a member of a larger group, to encourage the ability to resolve conflicts in a positive manner, and to develop positive attitudes towards learning.

Coffee Stand: Higher Grounds is a strong part of our

program with Becky Gruenberg as our primary barista greeting and welcoming everyone each weekday morning.

Volunteers play a crucial part of the success including John Benson, Jana Alderman, and Katelyn Alderman on Sunday mornings. The proceeds from Higher Grounds goes toward our scholarship fund.

Mission Project: For the spring field trip, we visited a local

fire department. The children brought water and snacks as a donation. We also joined the congregation with Samaritan’s Purse by donating shoeboxes at Christmas time.

Scholarships: This is huge. I consider our ability to offer

scholarships to the families who would be unable to attend our preschool without this assistance, a tremendous accomplishment and blessing with long term effects on this community. Your faithfulness to this program is commendable and thank you for helping us meet this challenge. The families who receive these scholarships are required to volunteer time back to the program.

Ghormley Meadow Christian Camp

2015 BLESSINGS! As we begin 2016, we are still basking in the glow of a wonderful year of ministry in 2015. To say that God blessed our ministry in 2015 would be a huge understatement.

We had the privilege of serving 27 new groups and our overall retreat ministry numbers finished 19% up from 2014. Our summer camp ministry saw exactly 900 campers (not including Outreach Camp, which had 100 campers) come through the Meadow, and over 100 youth professed a new faith in Christ as a result of their time at Ghormley. Praise God for this!

In addition to being able to serve so many people, God blessed us with a great group of summer staff, from as far away as Knoxville, TN. I recall sitting with Shelby (from Tennessee) on her first night at camp, as she wept at realizing the reality of spending summer thousands of miles away from home. To see her overcome those fears and turn into one of our best counselors, is a testament to God’s grace at work in the lives of each of our staff whom God calls to serve at camp. God also brought about full-time staff change, as Matt Gooch and his wife Kelsie departed Ghormley to return to the Spokane area. God brought us Stephanie Lewis, along with her two kids, Celeste and Radan, to fill Matt’s position of Guest Services Director, and it has been amazing to see God work through Stephanie in her short time at Ghormley.

She is extremely talented and passionate about serving our guests well, and I am excited to see her ministry continue.

We also added a new staff position this fall as we hired Cheryl Massingill for the position of Retreat Services Assistant.

Cheryl assists in the Guest Services department alongside Stephanie, helping with duties like hosting and providing a higher level of service to our guests. Cheryl also serves in the Foodservice area, which gives Matt Noteboom much needed support in the kitchen.

Over Christmas weekend, we had the privilege of hosting the Sali family, who are a missionary family home on furlough from Mexico. They thanked us for our generosity in hosting them, saying “it is no small gift what you offer to families like us”. I resonate with that statement, because it reminds me in a very personal way that the ministry of Ghormley MATTERS. Whether it’s a large new retreat group, a summer staffer far from home, an Outreach camper being loved on, or a small missionary family get together, God is using the ministry of Ghormley to touch the lives of thousands of people. In His grace, He uses the humble efforts of our staff, which is no small thing to those we minister to.

Ghormley was able to finish 2015 $60,000 in the positive, which is a huge blessing to be able to put money away for “rainy days” in the future, as well as invest in improving what we offer those we serve. As we begin 2016, we’re looking forward to another year of God’s work here at Ghormley.

Ryan will work as a medical doctor at the hospital in Luma de Luz for at least four months, perhaps longer.

Worship Ministry Team 2015 Worship Ministry Team Year End Report The Worship Ministry Team’s responsibilities include nearly everything that happens on Sundays in and around our larger services. The work of the staff and volunteers that make worship a success on Sundays cannot be thanked enough. So… if you have been involved in anything from decorating the sanctuary, to helping out in the connection center, in the balcony of the tech booth, involved with music or giving a testimony up front - THANK YOU! We appreciate your work and help in making Sundays a welcoming and worshipful place for everybody.

Temple Choir 2015 saw the choir become even stronger in the Lord.

They are a close-knit group who care fiercely for one another. Through prayer and sharing, the choir walks together through the fun things as well as the difficult things. Rehearsals are filled with fellowship, worship, and the Word as well as music.

The New Year will see a change in leadership for our beloved choir. They will be learning to function under a new director with new ideas and different ways of doing things. May the Lord bless them as they continue on the path of discipleship that He has set for them. We trust You, Lord, to provide faithfully for their every need as they seek to glorify and follow You!

The Contemporary Worship Team continues to have a great group of consistent volunteers who love to worship God with their gifts. We have even had a couple more folks join our team this year. Each person works hard to see that what we do is set a tone of worship through music, not a performance of songs. Senior Retirement Living Facilities Worship Services For many years, ministering to our neighbors has been a goal of approximately ten Grace of Christ members.

As a rotating team, a speaker and a piano accompanist conduct a thirty to forty-minute worship service at the Ponderosa Retirement facility and then immediately afterwards proceed to Orchard Park to lead those gathered there. Unable to leave their place of residence for church prompts the seniors to be very grateful for the opportunity our folks give to them. The joy of Christian fellowship blesses all participants.

Worship Ministry Team Baby Celebration/ New Covenant Partner Committee The purpose of our committee is to host and celebrate families with infants, children and young adults, and welcome them to our church family. We reach out to families regularly attending, as well as those celebrating Child Dedication or Baptism. Recently we have made a very exciting transition in our ministry to include celebrating New Covenant Partners as well.

January we celebrated the dedication of Bennet Dalan and Abigail Miller.

May 10 we celebrated the sacrament of Baptism for Carson Knautz, Emily Knautz, Ryan Lopez, Drew Lopez, Hannah Trammell, Claire Trammel, Benjamin Trammell, Magnus Quevedo and Avery Van Horn. Charlie Barritt was dedicated.

August 9, Charleigh Robel , Brian Buchanan and Harold Brown were baptized.

November 8 we celebrated the baptism of Spencer Olson, Emily Gabbard, Levi Gabbard, Erin Meloy and Aunicka Strother.

New Covenant Partners: Aaron and Quinn Dalan, Angie and Erin Meloy, Ed and Linda Murrah, Norm Shively, Lynne Collins, Richard Milhorn, Pamella Milhorn, Barbara Manka, Carrell Manka, Alicia Stephens, Matthew Quevedo, Crystal Lopez and Karen Worden.

We have a faithful group of quilters who work diligently to make the beautiful quilts each infant receives at these celebrations. Our youth and adults also receive a gift to remember this special occasion. We feel truly blessed that God has led each of us to minister to these families and New Covenant Partners.

Connection Center The mission of Grace of Christ is to reach those “unconnected” and is an avenue for all members to find their niche by getting connected in areas where they are most comfortable, feel gifted or feel led.

Linda Burnam continues to greet visitors and our congregation with a smile at our Connection Center and assist them with information and directions. Signup sheets for church events are also available there.

There are three time periods when this service (at the Connection Center) is offered: 7:45-9:15, 9:45-10:45, and 10:45-12:15 each Sunday. Volunteers commit to this service in a variety of ways ranging from signing up as a substitute to committing to a one-time slot from one to several times a year. If you have an interest in this ministry of our church, please speak with Linda or a volunteer at the Connection Center.

- Linda Burnam Sanctuary Guild The Sanctuary Guild is a small group of members who decorate the sanctuary seasonally. At Easter the congregation provides lilies which are arranged on the stairs and railings. They add a classic beauty to the sanctuary. A simple display of wheat sheaths and lighted pillar candles were arranged at the communion table for our stewardship campaign. Pumpkins, squash and gourds were then added to the display to celebrate harvest and Thanksgiving.

In December, we joined the Mary McLean Guild to decorate the church for Christmas. The advent wreath and crèche were set-up at the communion table. Large lighted wreaths, garlands and poinsettias were added to the steps and stair railings.

It is a joy for this committee to bless our church with these simple acts of beauty.

Fellowship Ministry Team & Adult Education 2015 Fellowship Ministry Team Year End Report The function of the Fellowship Ministry Team is to provide opportunities for the body of Grace of Christ to spend time in each other’s company, share life together and to help support each other emotionally, physically and spiritually. We also practice hospitality, in hope that everyone feels welcome in our church. Fellowship activities in 2015 included: • An Ash Wednesday Soup and Bread Dinner • Ordination Celebration for Tyler Van Horn • A Congregation Stewardship Dinner for the Congregation in October • Serving Cookies and Coffee during Sunday Fellowship Time

Adult Education “GOING DEEPER CLASS” REPORT FOR 2015 The class continues to meet in the Adult Ed. Room. The class stresses continuous studies with expository teaching.

We began 2015 with Jeff Steere doing a study on all of the Lord’s parables. Jeff finished the class in May, and since than Ron Sanders has been doing a study on Revelation, which is ongoing and presently in chapter 16.

Our next study is planned to be the Book of Romans, which will begin when the Revelation study is completed. The plan is that Romans will be team-taught by Garey Rolstad, John Strang and Ron Sanders.

The class is open to anyone who brings their Bible and wants to dig into the Scriptures.

David Ferry Lounge each Sunday, rain or shine. The class is open to everyone and still maintains its small group atmosphere with a weekly agenda including hymn singing, prayer time, announcements and the weekly Bible study lesson. MOPS

(MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS) The exceptional MOPPETS program offers children time with several Christ-loving volunteers who have been busy attending children from infant stage on up to children in our Homeschool room. MOPPETS is divided into five groups by age and ability, and at least two or more volunteers are in attendance for each group. Every child is offered a snack and an opportunity to participate in an age-appropriate activity.

This year’s MOPS theme is “A Fierce Flourishing.” MOPS has its Emily DeKorte own Finance and Registration team: Danielle Woodcock and Amber Rodriguez, a Speaker Coordinator: Sabin Hogue, Prayer, Care and Fun: Sarah Myers, MOPPETS Coordinator: Jennifer Suhm, Hospitality Coordinator: Melissa Fleck, nine Discussion Group Leaders: Megan Nelson, Jennifer Berger, Shannon Carlson, Autumn Creach, Erika Doré, Cortney Hardy, Hannah Halverson, Trisha Swanson, and Melissa Wiegand, and six Mentor Moms: Caroline Sundquist, Wendy Guske, Monica Cottle, Sharon Kearby, Maureen Cross, and Darlene Smith. Though my second year in service, this is my first, and perhaps last, year as Coordinator as I am expecting triplets this winter.

MOPS is more of an ecumenical ministry in that many of its volunteers are found serving other churches than Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church. Different denominations are also represented, but all Leadership Team volunteers have signed a Leadership Team Covenant which assures a relationship with Jesus Christ as their Lord and a commitment to serving sacrificially from a Biblical model.

MOPS was able to send four repeat Leadership Team members to Indianapolis, Indiana for the annual conference MOMcon to see and glean from several big name Christian leaders. Airfare and registration were paid for out of the MOPS budget which gets most of its revenue from dues, two annual bake sales, and our annual auction in April.

MOPS gathers twice a month. Our speakers, who fill a half hour of our two hour meetings, are encouraged to help us Embrace Rest, Notice Goodness, and Celebrate Lavishly, three topics MOPS International has associated with this year’s theme. The other hour and a half is spent in fellowship over a delicious meal, discussion, and prayer. As a special monthly event, MOPS offers Creative Moments, where women can come and work on any project they wish with child care provided from the Child Care’s Early Learning Zone at Grace of Christ.

The annual Christmas Tea was well-attended and marked the advent of the Christmas season’s wonderful activities for all busy moms and families. We welcome 2016 with a commitment to enabling MOPS moms to flourish in their unique role as mother.

Our meetings end on May 13, 2016 when we host an Appreciation Luncheon for our fabulous volunteers. Our Mission Statement is “MOPS International encourages and equips moms of young children to realize their potential as mothers, women, and leaders in relationship with Jesus and in partnership with the local church.” We thank Grace of Christ for partnering with us to become better moms, making a better world.

(Saved, Healed, and Delivered)

The Sozo Ministry 2016 Report

Sozo ministry is a unique inner healing ministry aimed to get to the root of things hindering a person’s personal connection with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. With a healed connection, they can walk in the destiny to which they have been called.

Sozo is the Greek word translated “saved, healed, and delivered.” For example, in Matthew 9:22 it means healing, “But Jesus turning and seeing her said, ‘Daughter, take courage, your faith has made you well’ [Sozo], and at once the woman was made well [Sozo].”

A Sozo session is a time for the Sozo team to sit down with a person and with the help of the Holy Spirit walk them through the process of freedom and wholeness. It is not a counseling session but a time of interacting with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit for wholeness and pursuing of one’s destiny.

Our team consists of 16 members. Five team members are from this church. They are Julie Grove the director, Eric Gustafson, Kathy Myers, Robin Stuber, and Sharon Trick.

The other members represent seven different churches in the Yakima Valley.

Since the Sozo Ministry began in 2011 we have done 309 Sozos and put in 2940+ volunteer hours. Sozo Ministry is not supported financially by Grace of Christ. Our expenses are paid from donations received from those we minister to.

We enjoy partnering with other ministries and currently partner with Love Inc., The Healing Rooms, and the Women’s New Life Program at the Union Gospel Mission. In Isaiah 61 the Bible teaches us that when people are set free and healed they will be called oaks of righteousness, and make a positive impact on those around them and their DID YOU KNOW? Sozo Ministry began at the Bethel Church in Redding California in 1997. There are teams on the Sozo Network from 36 states in the U. S. and 17 other countries. The Sozo Ministry began in Yakima in June of 2011 and we were asked to be on the Sozo Network in 2013.

cities. Transformed people transform cities, and because we all want to see our communities transformed we are part of the Faith and Families Team. This is a group of ministry leaders, Christians working in family oriented agencies, and Christians from our community who are seeking to find out how we can better impact our community if we work together. Faith and Family is part of the Transform Yakima Together Network.

After our clients finish their session we have them fill out an experience form. There is a section where they can fill out a testimony of breakthrough. They give written permission for us to use their testimonies. These are a few testimonies from 2015: • I received breakthrough and freedom from fear, anxiety, and confusion that had been plaguing me. I felt Jesus make me “complete,” something that I have never felt before.

• I asked for forgiveness and gave forgiveness. I saw a new and loving version of God. I broke through in hatred, fear, and shame that had me in bondage releasing me to a new way of life.

• I have gained a valuable tool I can use in prayer in order to continue to build a stronger relationship with God. • I believe God wanted me to rest in His presence. He wanted me to have an experience of His love and peace.

We are also doing a Sozo training for those who want to be on the Sozo Team starting in late February or March. It will be on Thursday evenings and run approximately seven weeks.

Foundation and Business Ministry Team GRACE OF CHRIST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH FOUNDATION The grace of Christ Presbyterian Church Foundation has continued to provide assistance through the funding for religious education opportunities for members and staff and for the improvement of physical buildings and grounds.

I want to take time to acknowledge the board members for the work they do to utilize the foundation to move the work of the church forward. They are Ann Aldous, Jim Bigelow, Alan Cottle, Rhonda Dolsen, Linda Drumhiller, Rich Millet, Mike Taylor and Pastor Cindy Shively. A special thanks to John Benson, who just completed his second three-year term and is stepping down. David Thorner has been elected to a three-year term to fill out the board. Without the extra efforts by Tammy Nunley, of the church staff, our efforts would be much more difficult.

One of the primary goals of the foundation board this year is to prepare and distribute a revised information packet to inform congregational members of the opportunities to contribute toward the growth of the foundation. We want to reacquaint the congregation with the opportunities that are the possible tax advantages with an investment in the foundation. These investments will provide added resources to help support the requests for future education and physical plant needs of the church. BUSINESS MINISTRY TEAM 2015 ANNUAL REPORT During 2015 BMT continued to guide the finances of GCPC toward a goal of matching monthly revenues with expenses, to avoid having a large deficit at year-end that historically needed to be closed. In 2015 we achieved that objective.

GCPC still encouraged year-end giving, and those funds are being used to fund part of the 2016 budget.

BMT contracted with Moss Adams, the local accounting firm, to review our financial operating procedures. They call this a SCORE report (Systems, Control, and Operations Risk Evaluation) and gave GCPC and Tammy Nunley very high marks in their report. Historically, GCPC does this analysis every other year.

Camp Ghormley had a successful year and continues their financial turnaround. Pre-School continues to welcome children into their ministry and are doing well.

Other highlights in 2015 include: Personnel became its own Ministry Team, detaching from BMT, and BMT authorized the final loan payment back to the Foundation, which was taken out in 2009. – Mark Baldwin

Clerk Report and Elders

Over the last year at Grace of Christ Presbyterian Church, we have seen an abundance of transition. I am amazed watching our Session and the members of this church continually step up to all the challenges that we have encountered; we have been a church that says “yes.” Truly, God is present in our church, working through our Body. Here are a few highlights of the past year: • Following Pastor Jack’s move to Florida, a Transition Team was formed to support Pastors Cindy and Tyler in leading the church through a planned interim year, in which we would listen to God regarding His vision for our church leadership.

• Our Youth Director, Jeff Murray stepped down after several faithful years of service. Kelsey Schmidt, who had previously served as assistant to the Youth Director, felt the call to step out in faith and serve in this position of Director.

• Pastor Gustavo Carvajal was called to the Parker Heights congregation. Alex Rule, previously serving as assistant to Pastor Gus, stepped in to lead the congregation of Gracia de Cristo. Alex has been surrounded with support from his congregation and our Session.

• The congregation of Cristo Vive, and your Session, moved to acknowledge Gracia de Cristo as fully a part of our church body by adopting the name Grace of Christ/Gracia de Cristo.

They will also be able to move forward into 2016 with no funding support from the PCUSA. • Choir Director Lyndi Peacock moved to Arizona, to follow her husband, who accepted a new teaching position there.

A search committee identified and hired Roz Strang to assume the position of Choir Director.

• A Church Mission Study was completed by the congregation to 1) inform us where we are as a church body and 2) to point us in the direction of our future vision. Following completion of the Study, the Transition Team prayerfully recommended to Session the formation of a Pastor Nominating Committee to begin the search for a Senior Pastor. This recommendation was approved and a slate of candidates will be brought before the congregation for approval in February 2016.

• We have opened our doors to 7-10 homeless each evening during these winter months. The men come as our guests to share a meal and fellowship before they transition to Central Lutheran Church, where they then spend the night.

• We have begun a yearlong leadership training for those interested in becoming part of the leadership of Grace. The nominating committee recommends potential Elder candidates to the leadership class. Others in leadership recommend individuals who will potentially serve on ministry committees.

The season of LENT begins on Ash Wednesday,

February 10, which is 40 days before Easter (not including Sundays). This is a time of preparation for Easter through repentance and contemplation of the necessity of the cross in our forgiveness. His birth at Christmas ultimately leads to the cross and His suffering.

This service vividly portrays the significance of the cross of Christ in our forgiveness as worshipers symbolically nail their sins to the cross. The slips of paper are burned in silence as first names are read aloud. Worshipers are invited to come forward once again to receive the sign of the cross with the ashes. Join us for this most poignant and personal worship experience.

Join us at 5:30 pm in the Gym for a simple soup and bread supper.

Childcare will be available during the service. We will

gather in the Sanctuary at 6:00 pm for Prayer and a

Special 6:30 pm Service.
