Life's Ordinary Moments: Where Discipleship Takes Root

Inher great book, Liturgy of the Ordinary, Tish Harrison Warren shares that Alfred Hitchcock once quipped that movies are “life with the dull bits cut out.” We flock to stories filled with action, romance, witty dialogue, and inspirational music—but no one wants to watch someone brushing their teeth or waiting in traffic. Yet, if we’re honest, most of our lives are filled with these “dull bits.” Ordinary routines. Quiet conversations. Daily tasks.

What if those moments weren’t dull at all?

What if the ordinary parts of our lives—work, rest, meals, chores, errands, school, parenting, grocery shopping, even brushing our teeth—were all part of the beautiful and sacred rhythm of life God designed for us? What if they are the very ground where discipleship takes root and God’s kingdom takes shape?

This fall at First Presbyterian Church, we’re embracing a new theme: “Along the Way: The Discipleship of the Ordinary.”

Kicking off on Sunday, August 17, we will launch a new season of Sunday School, Children’s Ministry, Youth and Adult Bible Studies, and Mission with a celebration of what it means to follow Jesus in our everyday lives. As we welcome one another back from the rhythms of summer, we will also begin exploring how God meets us not only in the sanctuary, but in the seemingly small moments of daily life.

Jesus’ Great Commission in Matthew 28:19–20 says, “Go therefore and make disciples…”

But the grammar of the original language also allows it to be read: “As you go…” As you go to work, as you raise your children, as you go to school, as you cook, clean, and care for others—make disciples.

This is a call not just to do something but to become someone: a disciple whose every step, even the ordinary ones, is shaped by Christ. Discipleship isn’t only about mission trips and Sunday worship—it’s about how we live in the 165 hours of the week we aren’t in church.

We believe three theological truths ground this vision:

1. Creation: God called the world “good”— ordinary life was designed with dignity and purpose.

2. Incarnation: In Jesus, God took on ordinary flesh and redeemed the mundane with divine meaning.

3. Restoration: The Holy Spirit empowers us to participate in God's work of renewal—making all things new, even the most ordinary.

This fall, we will explore how to follow Jesus in everyday places:

• In our workplaces and schools

• In our homes and neighborhoods

• In our eating, spending, and resting

• In our care for our bodies, our creation, and one another

As author Scot McKnight reminds us, “A life in service to others is not heroic. Rather, it is ordinary people helping ordinary people who happen to be in their path as they travel through life.”

Let’s make this Kickoff Sunday an occasion to celebrate the extraordinary beauty of ordinary discipleship. Invite your friends and neighbors. Come ready to reconnect, recommit, and rejoice in what God will do “along the way.”

We are so excited for what’s ahead.

See you on August 17!

Oaxaca Journey Embracing Faith and Fellowship

Our recent mission trip to Oaxaca was an incredible journey of growth, connection, and service, marked by moments of God’s faithfulness and overwhelming hospitality. From our first adventurous day of travel, we sensed that this trip would be a meaningful experience, full of shared meals and fellowship.

The adventure began as we gathered over meals in San Antonio and Mexico City, bonding while navigating the logistical challenges at the airports. United in our mission, we found reassurance in each other’s company as we settled in Oaxaca, ready to immerse ourselves in the local culture.

Day two was a rich tapestry of learning and engagement. We commenced with a devotional from Matthew 6 and continued to Amor Y Proclamación Church (IPAP), where Pastor Josias Luna and the elders welcomed us

graciously. The AMO ministry program, a daily source of inspiration for their community, provided a glimpse into their structured approach to nurturing faith through education.

Our afternoon was spent serving the Xoxo church plant, where we provided meals and distributed event flyers for an outreach day. It was a beautiful expression of God's word in action, united as new friends hosted us with warm meals and rich fellowship. The community has a contagious zeal for the Lord, and deep joy for learning from one another as

they are compelled to live out the Word in faith.

Day three brought new encounters and shared testimonies during Xoxo’s outreach event. We were partners with IPAP’s young adult leadership as the community was invited to experience God’s love for them through the offering of medical services, haircuts, food and fun together. A touching moment arose when we prayed and collected donations for a family facing health challenges and witnessed their invitation into community. The outreach sparked new Bible study groups, a testament to the event's impact.

Worship at IPAP on day four was extraordinary. We experienced a mosaic of faith through songs sung in different languages, embodying the unity of the Church. Members of our team were invited to participate in various areas of leadership in worship, from singing to teaching.

Particularly impactful was a moment when the church sang a worship song first in Spanish, and then in English, together. It was a wonderful moment of experiencing a look ahead to the promise of Revelation, when all tribes, tongues, and nations will come together in worship. The preaching and teaching that morning were also very impactful as we considered the joy and freedom we gain in the reordering of our hearts due to the abundant and merciful love of Christ.

Our fifth day brought focus to the compassionate community work at Fundación Cristo por su Mundo and Esther Suarez's ministry in Tlacolula. Touring the children's home and school filled us with awe. Gratitude flowed as we witnessed a providential moment unfold. Teachers at the first school had

been trying to find access to the AMO program to utilize with the children living and attending school on their campus. What a joy when they discovered that members of our team are leaders of AMO Mexico, and could connect them. They were overjoyed for this connection and eager to begin to utilize the curriculum quickly! We were deeply touched by the time we were able to spend with children and teachers of both schools, recognizing the cost they incur as they joyfully and sacrificially give of themselves and their gifts for God’s glory.

On our final full day, we reflected deeply on Colossians while visiting Mount Alban and sharing fellowship at Pastor Josias’ home. The historical ruins provided a backdrop for contemplation and prayers for the communities we had connected with, as we overlooked them from the mountain. At Pastor Josias’ home, we were served with a delicious home-cooked meal, and personalized gifts from our hosts were a wonderful

outpouring of their radical generosity and hospitality. Our team left that evening with hearts full, and overwhelming gratitude for the deepening relationships that are being built with our brothers and sisters in Oaxaca.

Eddie Chapa beautifully reflected on the profound love, unity, and joy we discovered among the people of Oaxaca. Their unwavering faith amidst adversity inspired us to reconsider our values and the Gospel’s call.

As we return home, we invite you to continue praying for God's Kingdom to flourish through the work initiated on this trip. May our stories encourage others to explore how they are called to serve. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the opportunity to sow seeds of faith and fellowship across borders and grow in Christ's love.

Gracias, Señor Jesús.

Our time in the Yucatan was filled with laughter, service, and spiritual growth, guided by Micah 6:8: “To seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.”

Our journey began with a warm welcome and hearty breakfast, setting the tone for a week of meaningful service and joyful fellowship. On the first day, we dove into serving by painting the ceilings and walls of YPM’s university. It was wonderful to know that the team was serving on this campus where the local Maya people are invited to gain access to advanced education as a means for transformation and strengthening their communities. After a lot of laughs, sweat, and spilled paint, we finished our first day and began working on VBS prep.

Exploring the local culture was as enriching as our work. Attending a bilingual service at All Peoples Church in Puerto Morelos, we experienced the unifying power of worship across languages. The service was powerful as we were reminded of the power of always being rooted in Christ.

For three days, we painted not just the university, but also the YPM water plant, a crucial source of clean water for locals. We discovered the profound impact of our labor as we heard about the new ways “Living Water” is shared with those coming to access clean water for their families. What a way to share the gospel

message! Each stroke of paint was a step in our journey of love and mercy.

During the week, evenings came alive with Vacation Bible School (VBS), where we bonded with local children and their families. The storytelling and games transcended language barriers, creating connections as we enacted parables like the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. Despite one rainy evening, the outreach showed us the power of compassion and shared joy in Christ.

As our journey drew to a close, gratitude filled the air. The final VBS night was a highlight, with laughter resonating through games and spontaneous hairstyling sessions—a sweet, albeit humorous, bonding moment. Together, we sang

“Mi Dios es Tan Grande,” affirming the greatness of God amidst simple joys.

Reflecting on the week, we realized our understanding of justice and mercy had deepened. We also recognized that we saw and experienced so much delight in the Lord as we reflected on how much the trip was filled with uncontainable joy and laughter. Our hosts, Wilian, Erly, Claudio, and Adrian, enriched our journey, embodying Christ’s love and selflessness. Through them, God’s stewardship and providence became palpable.

Returning with joyful hearts and unforgettable memories, we now carry with us a story of transformation. We experienced firsthand that God’s love knows no borders, and His mercies are new every morning. As we resume life at home, we do so with newfound boldness to share our journey, inspire others, and continue seeking justice and mercy in all we do.

We are deeply grateful for your continued prayers and support. May we all be inspired by these experiences and commit ourselves to serving our communities with the same spirit of love and humility. Join us in praying that our laughter, joy, and testimonies resonate beyond this mission trip, echoing God’s endless grace and favor.

Vaya con Dios!
